Thanks for your help at Castle Grayskull earlier MK 'She-Ra' Scouser. :)

"Castle Grayskull".

I've heard that as a nickname for both Old Trafford and Ibrox.

Genuine question about the standard of footy these days. Does everything just seem tactically over complicated for the sake of it and just rather boring to watch these days? Too much possession based passing for the sake of passing in my opinion.

I don't seem to be finding matches as entertaining as I used to (albeit there are exceptions of course) .

 1

13 May 2024 14:11:50
The game has changed a lot. Teams are not willing to commit to swashbuckling football anymore due to being scared to death of being counterattacked or overloaded.

Part of that is down to the new wave of coaches trying to copy Pep and/ or De Zerbi.

We're the press-baiting era now.

Anyone remember the Arsenal fans and their ‘ one nil to the Arsenal ‘ chant? I think football is better now than it was 20 years ago,

 0

13 May 2024 15:50:10
Modern football is dreadfully dull. I don't think there are as many talented individuals are there were 20+ years ago, everything now is system based.

{Ed014's Note - maybe you need to change teams mate 😂

13 May 2024 08:19:19
Ed’s anyone of the loanees coming back that you are excited about and think could be a useful player next season for us?

 1

{Ed001's Note - Beck.}

 5

13 May 2024 09:14:08
Would you sell tsimikas then Ed

And who else in the current squad do you thing could be sold?

 1

{Ed001's Note - I would yes. I have no idea who could be sold as we have a completely new team in charge, they might have all new ideas.}

 5

13 May 2024 10:54:56
Any idea how he’s done at Dunndee eds1?

 0

{Ed001's Note - from what I have been told, he is their standout player.}

 3

13 May 2024 11:25:25
Beck made team of the season in Scotland. Best left back in their league this season by all accounts, so well worth a shout, given the success of Bradley.

 2

13 May 2024 12:14:27
Surely Nat Phillips is moved on this year.

 2

13 May 2024 11:38:17
Jaros - having a good half season at Sturm Graz by all acocounts. About to win the league there. Could be a good replaecment for Kellerher as 2nd choice if he leaves.
Davies - dropped out of the Crewe team after failing to impress. Probably time to move him on.
Ramsay - get rid. Barely played again due to injury.
Van den Berg - had a great season at Mainz. I saw him described as one of the top 10 defenders in the Bundesliga on another forum. Could come back to replace Matip as a squad option perhaps.
Williams - not good enough. Let him go to progress his career.
Koumetio - not good enough. Let him go to progress his career.
Phillips - doing well at Preston. Should good a good move in the summer.
Beck - Not seen much of him but he's started over 80% of Dundee's games and according to Ed001 has had a good season. Possible Tsimikas replacement
Chambers - another who will be after Tsimikas's position in the squad. Had a great half season with Wigan playing CB, LB and LM. Decent utility player who might fancy his chances in pre season.
Morton - had a good season with Hull City but I think he'll struggle to get back in our squad with Bajcetic and Clark both just being better and younger players. Time to move on I reckon.
Balagizi - done nothing at either Wigan or Kilmarnock. End of the line for him I suspect. Will have to drop down to League 1 or below.
Corness - done well by all accounts in Switzerland but bit like Morton, I don't see where he fits in with better and younger midfielders in his way.
Carvalho - might get a chance in pre season. He's recently said he wants to come back to Liverpool. Scored some screamers too. Might find a way back under Slot.

 2

{Ed001's Note - I forgot about VDB! He has looked very good out on loan in the Bundesliga. Injuries are the issue with him.}

 2

13 May 2024 13:31:04
I've read a lot of good things about Sepp VDB recently, my only concern is that he's playing in a pretty poor team so probably easy to standout however didn't we buy Robbo from a relegated team so what do I know? I think we should bring him back as a Matip replacement to see if he can cut it over here, will free up some cash for improvement elsewhere. Same for Beck too, sell Tsimikas.

 1

13 May 2024 13:36:16
Is there an option for Mainz to by VDB as part of his loan contract? I don't remember where I heard it, may have been when he went out on loan. If so, are we required to accept that bid, or is it just they get first, unrivaled option?

 0

{Ed002's Note - Nat Phillips (CB) Time to move on come the summer.
Sepp van den Berg (CB) He likely won't get a chance as a starter at Liverpool and will probably be sold in the summer to raise funds - could be a mistake by the club. There is no option to buy for Mainz but they will have a a first pick option if he were to be sold. Will need to speak to the club and see what other options he has.}

 0

13 May 2024 14:31:30
In fairness to VdB Ed, he’s not had any time out for injury this season, statistically he is the best u23 currently plying his trade in Europe according to Whoscored and he’s in good company in that bracket. He’s strong in the air, decent with the ball at his feet (doesn’t treat it like an unpinned hand grenade), he’s brave, likes a tackle and is rapid for a big lad. Only downside is he looks like a member of the Weasley family. No reason why he shouldn’t be given a chance.

 0

{Ed001's Note - I like him, but he has had a couple of big injuries and that is always something to be wary of. I would defo keep him personally. He offers a lot of flexibility in play as well, due to being able to play full-back, right of a back 3 or right of a back four. That would have made him ideal for the tactics we employed this season, with the right-sided centre-back pretty much having to swap between those 3 positions as the game goes on.}

Hidden Gem Players Manchester United Could Sign

13 May 2024 07:39:01
{Ed's Note - Shappy has posted a new article entitled, Hidden Gem Players Manchester United Could Sign

 0

13 May 2024 07:49:26
I like United’s current transfer policy which appears to be that where we’re strongly linked to a quite frankly horrendously bad player, United step in and say “hold my beer, lads”, then bring them in. Like they did with Mason Mount and Amrabat. That’s a fantastic policy and do keep it up.

 8

13 May 2024 08:15:51
I heard that Klopp was looking at suits like the one Ten Hag was wearing yesterday, too.
Klopp's indecison cost United again.

 1

13 May 2024 09:03:01
Someone ought to tell ten Hag that being a bald bloke wearing a roll neck is not the best fashion statement to make, Rigsby. (see ‘Kojak’s Rollneck’ in the urban dictionary for reference) .

 2

13 May 2024 09:28:14
What you need is 3 or 4 of your top targets, not 10 bargain basement signings. Welbeck wasn't good enough for you before he had Grandkids. Depth isn't a problem for a team without any European football.

 1

13 May 2024 09:44:05
I wouldn't call Mount a "horrendously bad player" though. He was Cheslea's Captain and player of the season two seasons in a row before his transfer to Utd. He had a tough time this season with injuries but, he is a hard worker and has good technical abilities so I think he would still be decent for them in the long run.

Amrabat on the other hand is a poor buy and had his stock boosted by a good World Cup. Sadly, he is only a loan signing for them, so they don't need to worry about thinking of how to get him out.

 1

13 May 2024 09:55:02
ManU's other problem is too many transfers with the wrong attitude. Milner might not have been a world beater but his attitude was world class. Can you imagine how long some of the manu players wouldve lasted in their first training session with Keane.

 0

13 May 2024 10:00:39
I've just been reading about one of Danny Welbeck's grandchildren being a bomb disposal officer.
His name is Stan.

 6

13 May 2024 11:20:19
I would call Mount a horrendously bad player. Never a centre midfielder in a million years. Too lightweight, too brainless and too indisciplined. Too slow to be a winger and not intelligent enough to be a number 10. United have thrown £60m down the toilet. He’ll be at Everton in two years time, sorry ed025, I know you boys have it hard enough at the moment.

That said, Mount’s lack of ability did get us two cup final wins against Chelsea.

 0

{Ed025's Note - knowing us VV we will probably take him and Maguire in a swap deal for Branthwaite mate..

 1

13 May 2024 12:14:48
Mount was a bad signing to be fair because he'd just had his worst season of his career and hip surgery. He was a good attacking midfielder though when fit and on form. In 21/ 22 season he got 13 goals and 16 assists aged 23 which is not too shabby. The worry for him will be that it's hard to recover from a drop off as severe as what he's had. Just ask Dele Alli and Ross Barkley.

If he can bounce back quickly though and return to his form of 2 years ago then he'll feel like a new signing to them next season and he's definitely not "horrendous". That's just hyperbole.

 0

13 May 2024 14:28:53
Sir Jim should be looking at the state of the ground, as well. I see the Waterfall was in full flow yesterday and I'm not talking about the pre match music by the Roses.
Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal and even Everton have been getting their houses in order recently and I believe Old Trafford is in need of some major work.

 0

13 May 2024 15:06:19
If Man Utd bought half of the players listed for the amounts suggested, that would be north of 200 million.

 0

12 May 2024 19:21:13
Next season will be all about Harvey Elliot, surely. This lad can play. He will break into the England team as well. My favourite player without a doubt.

 9

12 May 2024 20:56:55
Struggles to start for us, Where does he start for England?

 5

12 May 2024 20:58:08
Where do you think he'll play next season for Liverpool and England, Nicol?
There is a place for him at Liverpool but he's not at the level that to take us to or above City and Arsenal standards. Maybe if we strengthen the team Elliott could play a part in improving us but I don't think he'd be improving City or Arsenal.

 3

12 May 2024 21:20:00
If we play 4-2-3-1 then I suppose he could play ahead of the double pivot as a 10? Not sure he's fast enough to play on the wing or defensive minded enough at this stage of his development to play in a double pivot. Be interesting to see. He's got a lot of ability and he's a hard worker.

 2

12 May 2024 22:03:30
Agree to a large extent with Nicol.
Slot likes technical players who can move the ball quickly and break the lines with quick 1-2s. Elliott will fit right in.

 5

12 May 2024 22:16:34
He’s still yet to show me he’s anything but a natural number 10 playing out of position.

 0

12 May 2024 22:29:25
Elliots 21 and excellent. He'll keep improving ans become top drawer.

 7

12 May 2024 22:52:03
You can work on speed and power. Just have a look at a similar case in Orkun Kokcu and the specialised training program Arne Slot put him on because he knew the technical ability was there. However, the pace and power was to play as an 8 was lacking. Kokcu actually went onto have his best season and Feyenoord ended up winning the league. Which incidentally earned him a move to Benfica. So if Slot fancies Elliott as a 10 he will give him the best tools to effectively play that position.

One thing I have gathered is Arne Slot is well known for his tactical ability and Pep Guardiola like obsession for studying the opposition as well as improving his players. Also he likes playing either academy players or young players who are signed. Another thing is he is know for is training players into positions they weren't originally known for, and to great success mind. So don’t be surprised if we see that at Liverpool.

Now I’m not saying we will be winning multiple trophies right out the gate as patience is required. But the more I read about Arne Slot, the more I understand why Edwards chose him to be Klopp’s successor.

 7

12 May 2024 23:32:57
If Harvey develops and plays as a 10, is he taking Bellighams place in the England line-up?

 0

13 May 2024 02:20:31
Think Harvey is more than quick enough to play on the wing. We very rarely have space in games to be in a straight sprint and I wouldn't describe him as slow.

harvey is quick of mind and agile. That is all he needs for the wing in our team.

 2

13 May 2024 06:48:33
As long as Southgate is England manager Elliott could play anywhere, maybe in a back 3.

 4

13 May 2024 07:37:50
Apparently Southgate is a fan of Elliot’s. When asked about him he was quoted as saying “Elliot is currently his 115th choice right back”

Which in theory means he’s still got a shot at going to this euros.

 2

13 May 2024 07:39:34
Elliott is not quick and he's not talking Bellingham's place in the England team. Bellingham is younger than Elliott, too.
Slot could improve Harvey Elliott, make him quicker and stronger but it's highly unlikely that next season will be all about him. I think some of you are looking at him through rose tinted specs because he didn't feature as much as others in the poor run at the back end of our season.

 3

13 May 2024 09:03:29
Rigsby, Im one of Harvey's biggest fans even when many on here were getting impatient with him and wanted rid. He is a very good play and his technical ability on the ball, his vision and quickness over 5 yards are really good.

However like you, I think there is some recency bias going on with his performances of late and how people are assessing things. Has he had very good to great games for us this year? Of course BUT let's not overdo things here.

IMO, The kid is ripe for an elevation in his game and Slot is very interesting with the ways he improves players like @Alonso said with Ozcan and what he reportedly did to improve Santhiago Gimenez by changing his running style completely. I look forward to the work Slot can do with ALL our players, not just Harvey.

 3

13 May 2024 09:46:19
I don't think it will be all about Elliott but I do think it could be the year he really takes off and becomes a regular starter for Liverpool. He's been around so long people take it for granted how young he is.

I've always likened him to Juan Mata as a player and Mata's career really took off around this age (20/ 21). For players so small in stature who also lack pace, it is their technique and their intelligence that they rely on to succeed, which are attributes that take a little longer to hone.

Bellingham never had to worry about that because he's big, strong and a powerful runner so it's an unfair comparison. Kane didn't hit top level until 22 because he lacked pace and was always off balance so he had to learn how to find a yard to set himself and get a shot away. All players career trajectories are different. Never say never though. At 21 years old when Kane was behind Sturridge, Rooney, Ings, Austin and Welbeck who'd have predicted he'd break the record for most England goals ever?

Elliott's got good vision, an explosive shot with very little back lift and exceptional work rate. I think we could see him go get 10 goals and 10 assists in the league next season quite easily. He can certainly break into the England squad, but breaking into the first XI when he's up against the likes of Bellingham, Foden, Saka and Palmer will be tough.

 4

13 May 2024 09:48:38
I think Elliott is having an overall decent season with us. Always trying and never giving up are the two things that we can expect from him without fail, and that is what endears him to us. Definitely rose-tinted but I want him to succeed with us and have a good career purely because of that. He has improved from last season to this season, not only in stats but in overall performance, so I won't be surprised if he continues on this trajectory into next season as well.

 0

13 May 2024 10:41:17
Ed01, if we play with a 10, which I guess we could with. 4 - 2 - 3 - 1 do you think that Carvalho might find a place in the squad? Do you think he could be good enough or not and would his attitude towards Klopp be too much of a risk in terms of his character?

 0

{Ed001's Note - not because of his attitude towards Klopp, but because of his attitude in general. He threw his toys out of the pram rather than working harder. I would want to have a seriously long chat with him before I considered him.}

 1

13 May 2024 14:52:49
Fair comment Ed01 - hopefully he matures as a person and comes to appreciate what’s required in terms of attitude. To be fair from the little I have heard he seems to be putting the effort in at Hull.

 0

12 May 2024 15:32:54
Ed001 mate, what's your thoughts on Jones?
Is he good enough to be a regular starter.
It seems every time he gets a good run of games he's then out with a lengthy injury.
It will be interesting to see do we look to cash in on him this summer with the likes of Bajetic, Elliot, Endo, Mac, Szobo, Gravenberch not likely to be moving and with possibly new additions.

 1

{Ed001's Note - it doesn't matter if he is good enough if he can't stay fit.}

 5

12 May 2024 16:40:26
I can't see us getting much money for Jones but I'd let him go.
He's an inferior version of Adam Lallana. Has too many touches on the ball and slows things down without creating anything.

 7

12 May 2024 17:59:22
Agree with you, Rigsby. Some folk on here used to say he was as good as Phil Foden. Never saw it myself.

 3

12 May 2024 18:57:48
It's easy to say that about Jones in hindsight but I'm going to say Harvey Elliott will leave us frustrated, too.
He's flavour of the month at the minute and I'd keep him but only because of his versatility. He can cover the front wide positions and midfield but that's it for me. He'll be a cover player.
He's not quick enough for a forward or strong enough for midfield. I can't ever see him being a player that we can't leave out.
I hope I'm wrong but I'll say it now and not two years down the line when I suspect we'll still be waiting for him to nail down a regular starting spot.
Gravenberch is the same. I'd get shut this summer and bring in someone that at least looks they could do job when called upon.

 2

12 May 2024 21:45:19
Curtis Jones was in midfield for our best performances this season. Injuries are the real concern for Curtis.

 2

{Ed025's Note - i personally think hes on a par with Tom Davies FPF..

 0

12 May 2024 20:49:13
I agree with you about Elliott, too. I can't ever see him nailing down a position, but, like you, I hope we keep him. Again, I hope he proves me wrong. And, Rigsby, you must qualify for the second most miserable git on here, because I totally agree about Gravenberch. As the saying is, if he's the answer I'm not sure what the question was. As you say, get shut.

 1

12 May 2024 23:49:48
Grav hasn’t been here a year yet. Been out with an injury and struggled with physicality/ pace of prem. give the lad a chance .

 2

13 May 2024 03:22:32
Rigsby nailed it w both his comments. Jones is like Gakpo in thinking he can counter faster with the ball at his feet than he can by passing it.

 0

13 May 2024 06:49:14
The best ability is availability so Curtis is struggling.

 2

13 May 2024 07:46:33
John, why do you think he's struggled with the pace and physicality of the PL? He didn't do much in the Europa or the Bundesliga either.
If he'd shown glimpses of ability then I'd be more patient with him but from what I've seen we'll just be hoping that there's a player that can hack the PL.

 0

13 May 2024 08:13:01
Ed 25, only Tom Davies?
Not at least the world class Andre Gomez?
Then I did say Origi was the equivalent of Grame Sharp, almost Dixie Dean. Just missing out by a whisker.

 0

{Ed025's Note - we all compare our players with somebody else sg and in the end its just about opinions, i once compared Nunez to coco the clown so sometimes im not far out mate.. :)

 1

13 May 2024 10:10:45
Coco was a good pro to be fair Ed025.

 0

{Ed025's Note - he really was Ron, maybe if Darwin hit the goalie with a custard pie just before he shoots his XG would go through the roof mate:)

 0

13 May 2024 10:43:53
Who s Tom Davies?

 0

{Ed025's Note -exactly mate.... ex- Everton midfielder now plying his trade from the bench for Sheffield united WDW.. :)

 0

13 May 2024 11:41:45
Ed25, it is you who keeps comparing your players to our and NOT the other way around. Personally, I have NEVER been accused of comparing any of our players to ANY Everton player let alone the hapless Tom Davies (does he still have a career, at this pint), nor would I ever do such a thing. Just saying.

 0

{Ed025's Note - there is nothing wrong with comparisons Oli, its just a gauge of the ability of the player mate, its not set in stone its just an opinion and a nicer way to judge a player rather than labeling them crap or dross i think..

 0

12 May 2024 10:41:27
Hello ed1 hope u keeping well. What u make of young danns? I impressed what I seen of him, although that hasn't been an awful lot, looks like a goalscorer. I v surprised he wasn't used last month r so as he looked to me that he exactly type of player we needed at the time, somebody to stick ball in net. our forwards at the time looked like they had the wait of the world on them, somebody like danns, fresh and young with no baggage would've been well worth a go imo.
I know he suffered concussion against forest which ruled him out for a while.

 3

{Ed001's Note - I am also surprised he was not given more opportunities, he looks a genuine goalsniffer with a decent link up play too. I really like the look of him, even though on first glance he seems a bit awkward and gangly. It does look like he is still growing into his body, so I wouldn't want him to be starting every week, but he looks ready for more time than he is getting. Especially with Jota out, we really lack someone who can actually be relied upon to score.}

 21

12 May 2024 10:57:35
Was crying out for him to come on vs United in that final 10 minutes.

 5

12 May 2024 11:02:19
Danns is a very good, young propect with the extremely little i've seen of him. The goals he has scored for the senior and U21 games are quite tasty in terms of his composure in front of goal. See his goals vs Southhmpton and his goal vs Utd with the U21's with an audacious back heel. He is definitely one to watch out for next season.

 3

12 May 2024 11:36:26
Thanks for response. Reminds me a bit of Harry kane when he 1st broke into spurs team as a youngster.

 2

12 May 2024 11:56:52
This is one thing I hope the new manager picks up on - the youngsters, id be prioritizing them from the off especially him, Bradley and quansah. Give them their chances or we'll lose them because all three are that good, they could go pretty much anywhere in this league right now so I hope they keep here and get their chances.

 6

12 May 2024 13:06:06
Bradley and Quansah have been starting. They and Danns wouldn't be going to City and Arsenal and starting.
I'm pretty sure about that.

 3

12 May 2024 13:11:44
Salah the youngsters have really stepped up this season.

Was said the other day that the two seasons Klopp has used the kids the most are the 2 seasons we have been in the Europa.

Next season in the CL we will likely have to go full strength every game. That leaves the Fa and League cup but that’s all based on the draws.

Over recent seasons we seem to get drawn against Premier league opposition quite a bit whilst City get drawn at home to the dog and duck local pub team.

 2

12 May 2024 13:54:51
Out of interest, does anyone know if slot uses youngsters? or is he more of a veteran type coach?
I'm surprised now that we've got nothing to play for we haven't seen some of the youngsters more, especially with some of the dips in form.

 0

12 May 2024 15:10:01
Slot has a very good record in working with young players. Infact, he has never signed anyone over the age of 24 while at Feyenoord if I remember correctly. However, that is something you expect with managers in the Dutch league, so it would be interesting to see if he tweaks the approach now given that he has considerably more money and pull now. At the same time, I believe his use of youth must have been an important factor while hiring him.

 1

12 May 2024 16:16:48
Koumas looks like a player too, more of a Beardsley type player but can certainly score. Needs more first team play.

 1

12 May 2024 17:13:39
Beardsley was a top player. Him, Barnes and Aldridge were brilliant for us. What a summer that was for us signing those three after selling Ian Rush.
I'd be thrilled if Koumas turns out half as good as Beardsley.

 2

12 May 2024 17:52:18
Edd001 i think klopp now has regrets on team selection. His comment of regret on not playing elliot more was very surprising because we've all been wondering WHY. He never gave a reason why but i think ultimately loyalty to other players plus the way we were playing cost us. Even young bradley getting injured, the comment klopp made comparing him to trent i thought was wrong. I don't think he's got it right with the younger players who were actually getting us through the tough period. He disregarded them once the "stars" returned and those same stars let us down.

 2

12 May 2024 19:03:43
If we'd played Elliott more I reckon we finish third and having won the Carabao Cup.
It wouldn't change our League position or have kept us in the Europa.
This is not a slight against because I like him but he's not a player that would have changed the course of our season.
Not yet anyway.

 1

12 May 2024 19:18:59
He looks like a member of Bone thugz and harmony as well as a good footballer. Fingers crossed he will get a chance to impress in pre season along with others. Hoping Bajcetic can stay injury free he needs minutes on the pitch that’s for sure. Exciting times ahead out with the old in with the new.

 0

13 May 2024 01:08:53
Mizer, I wouldn't read too much into what Klopp said, about not playing Elliott more. If I recall correctly, said the same thing about Minamino as well the season we won the Carling Cup.

 2

{Ed001's Note - and he was right about Minamino - he should have played him more.}

 2

13 May 2024 04:12:31
And I agree with that Ed, Minamino should have played more. Just pointing out that there is precedence to Klopp saying that he should have played xxx player more often, so it is not all that surprising that he is saying so again. It is more surprising that he has not learnt from it though, choosing instead to be "loyal" to players who are under-performing.

Dracred, took the words right out of my mouth cos Klopp did openly say that about Mino and at the time, I was screaming for Klopp to play him more. Mino got a raw deal from Klopp and had he played him more, he could have done more. That's on Klopp. Loyalty will ALWAYS be one of his blind spots, IMO.
