Genuine question - are there any HG DMs in the Prem that would suit us?
We've been linked with players like Wharton and Scott, but they are 8s, and we have a lot of them.
Aside from our own Nyoni, is there anyone we could buy that would improve that no 6 position and is HG?
30 Oct 2026 19:41:08
Neither of Wharton or Scott are defensive midfielders. And for what it's worth I reckon Nyoni is going to be better than Wharton as he's more mobile, more alert to danger and better defensively.
30 Oct 2026 20:01:38
Anderson be brilliant for us.
30 Oct 2026 21:04:23
The Roy Keane at Forest was nothing like the Roy Keane in his later seasons at UTD. Hate the way we just put MF's, especially young MF's in a certain box and think they can't get a grip on being able to play a different way.
30 Oct 2026 21:30:44
All depends on their natural abilities though Florian, by your reckoning, we should have no problem converting Wirtz into a DM, he's only 22, but the truth is you're either the type of player who relishes getting stuck in or you're not.
{Ed025's Note - Wirtz a DM??, you might as well get Julien Clary..
30 Oct 2026 22:07:54
Vik, great response to get likes, but I clearly discounted Wharton and Scott as 8s, and I think everyone pretty much agrees with them. Hence me asking of other HG players who play as DMs.
30 Oct 2026 22:09:46
Billy, is he the French Julian Clary? Maybe they were separated at birth like Rooney and Shrek, or Grealish and Keira Knightley?
{Ed025's Note - very possibly Zed.. :)
30 Oct 2026 22:22:05
Stuck in Chewy? in this league these days? Were hardly looking for a Souness or McMahon are we. Jesus the same Anderson that people act like is made of granite was throwing himself to the floor like a fairy a coupla weeks back.
31 Oct 2026 01:04:17
Don't get me started, that's a whole different tin of beans, this lot these days make Robbie Savage look like Norman Hunter.
30 Oct 2026 23:48:13
Anderson might have acted like a massive fairy when he got tackled Florian, but he still dog walked our powder puff midfield, again.
31 Oct 2026 02:08:05
Anderson dog walked our midfield? I don't think you even watch the games.
31 Oct 2026 05:37:07
I find it strange when people argue two players 'aren't DM's' when they are listed as DM's all over the internet, they play as the deeper midfielder (indeed, one did so for our current manager, the other was very close to joining Liverpool to play that role under our previous manager), they both have significant defensive contributions per 90, and either one, if brought in, would be brought in to play the deeper, more defensive midfield role.
30 Oct 2026 23:01:35
Ed25 - it's that time again .
Hmmmmmmm.
31 Oct 2026 07:14:17
Did anyone actually answer Zeds question?
31 Oct 2026 08:46:58
Yes they did "Who".
Elliott Anderson.
31 Oct 2026 08:48:54
Missed the boat on Sangare before he went to Brentford.
31 Oct 2026 09:11:51
I don't think Sangare would count as HG though.
31 Oct 2026 09:21:25
Who knows, Anderson may be viable depending on the punishment City recieve. he'd thrive under the lights at Anfield.
31 Oct 2026 09:35:01
I'd say Anderson played a part in getting the best midfielder sent off that day Victor. Thats about all he did. That best midfielder was one of our powder puff lot by the way.
30 Oct 2026 16:29:04
Maybe an old rumour, but hey-ho here goes:
Andril Fedchenko scout at Flamengo currently, will join Liverpool Football Club in January 2027, specialising in South America football, he takes over from Neil Mckee?
30 Oct 2026 16:39:10
I don't think this is a rumour I think it's happening/ happened.
30 Oct 2026 16:51:30
My go to region on football manager.
30 Oct 2026 15:34:53
Some talk of Araujo joining permanently as early as January, if a reduced fee can be agreed to, and Barca always needs the money. I wouldn't be against it, frankly. However, I would much rather the club focus on a DM as a first priority to solidify our midfield. Araujo is not going anywhere anyway, until next summer (if the loan is not taken up).
30 Oct 2026 16:15:29
All day everyday. He's been fantastic and is a great option at RB.
{Ed666's Note - he’s a limited RB although he’s having a purple patch currently..let’s see what his abilities are at CB for a few months before we spunk a tonne of money on just warrior spirit
30 Oct 2026 17:34:46
Well I would rather spunk money on some warrior mentality, physicality and desire than the money we are spunking on players going through the motions and taking their wages.
He is already rubbing off on some of the other players. Nyoni is throwing himself in to tackles and some of the others.
We need some fire in the team! Also can cover two positions.
30 Oct 2026 17:21:34
Ed666, I think we had this same convo on a previous thread. I get where you are coming from, but I would be more than happy to spend up to the £47m (obvs less if possible) even if he were a crap CB. We have spent as much as £47m on current FBs (and Cheaty have spent a lot more over the years) and if AI thinks that a more defensive focused RB fits how he wants to set the team up (making a back 3 for fast breaks when the LB is playing up the wing) then I'm all for it.
He did look composed on Wednesday playing at CB, and that was enough for me. His attitude and his timing in the tackle is just amazing.
{Ed666's Note - I have no qualms about ronnnies abilities I just want to see if he can sustain the form before I would sounk the money
30 Oct 2026 17:24:21
I tend to agree, Ed666. I like him but it would have to be a really good deal to convince me.
I have seen people make the argument that we need an experienced centre-back to lead the back-line if Van Dijk leaves but I don't think Araujo speaks English so I personally don't think that would work.
I personally would rather sign an out-and-out right-back, extend Van Dijk for one more year and give the game-time to Jacquet, Leoni and Ndukwe. Maybe then go for a truly transformative centre-back like Vuksovic depending on how all the young centre-backs develop.
{Ed666's Note - I would be shocked if he’s not having English lessons right now to assimilate into the club and new cultural surroundings
30 Oct 2026 18:46:53
Do we have to pay more if he rubs himself off on other players?
30 Oct 2026 19:20:53
He will be in front of h. r if he's rubbing himself on other players.
30 Oct 2026 21:50:18
This is where cold business has to rule, unless Barca are willing to take a large lump out of the fee why would we rush to pay it? We've got the deal already - why rush to bring it forward? A lot could happen in 7/8 months, ruptured acls, chronic anxiety or a collapse in form.
If Barca want to shift that liability onto us then they need to pay (via reducing the fee). Let's not forget they are the club that took Luis from us for silly money and got one of our players to strike.
30 Oct 2026 22:07:46
Ronald is doing well but is there any sense in doing the deal earlier, a lot can happen in 6 months, as others have said he could get a massive injury, drop off on form, or another younger player could emerge as a target.
No complaints about him so far he has been immense but unless an early deal saves us millions then let's just wait and see!
30 Oct 2026 22:33:55
When you buy a used car, do you tell the dealers that you'll only pay the full amount after using it for 6 months, in case of an accident, or in case you and your family stop loving the car, or in case it breaks down on the highway? It's a terrible analogy, but I hope you get the point. It sounds like what we're doing here with regards to Ronald Araujo, and I personally find it baffling.
Every team needs fighters. If I think about all the money we've flushed down the toilet and the amount we've lost on good players leaving on a free the last few years, I don't think the amount we're talking about is too much to pay for "warrior spirit." Did you see our team last season? Forget about whether we came out first or fifth. How "dead" was the vibe? Boy, it was dead everywhere, from the pitch to AXA to the Kop; everything was flat! Dead! Some of us even stopped watching altogether; just watching highlights and replays.
The psychology of having an absolute fighter having a renaissance in your team; how much are you willing to pay for that when you have young kids (players) coming through, like Nyoni and Rio and Jacquet, seeing and watching that everyday? I don't think you can put a price tag on that. You can see the reaction of the fans to him everyday; you can see that this fight is infecting the whole stadium and the whole team, and you're sitting comfortably and asking for more time to see how he does. How will he do?
Players lose form; players get injured and anything can happen. But in Araujo, this is not like getting a 22-year old South American who has potential but ultimately dreaming of playing for Barca or Madrid. This is actually the reverse. He's already been there and done that. He was the freaking Captain of Barca, guys; won them things. We got a discount due to a cruel twist of fate, and we're screwing around waiting to see how he develops. We should be thanking the gods for this opportunity and sorting this out ASAP.
Honestly, in Ronald Araujo, we're so lucky to have a Day 1 leader who can naturally command the respect of all the players especially as Virgil ages, and we're second-guessing that? I don'tcare if he speaks English or Chinese! It's a very young team; we've lost Robbo and Mo; we lost Millie and Hendo before that. [Just look at what Hendo is doing for Chelsea this late in his day!] Everybody knows how laid back Virgil is as a captain, even though he commands the respect of the team. How can you muck around with this gift-wrapped delivery right in our hands? You're willing to plunge hundreds of millions on players who may yet come good, but you turn around and second-guess and hesitate to spill much less than half of that on a true warrior who's just been reborn and fresh out of the fire and rising from the ashes like a phoenix???
30 Oct 2026 19:44:20
I suspect he is, Ed666. But there are language lessons and language lessons, aren't there? I've learnt three other languages besides English and you have to go all in to get anywhere.
Bale was supposedly having language lessons at Madrid and never got anywhere after nearly a decade. Kane can't speak German after over three years and he is supposedly having lessons. Diaz and Nunez never really got very far with their English.
I don't know all of their personal circumstances so I'm not making this point for the purpose of condemning them. I am just not putting my hat on Araujo's English being good enough to be the leader in the defence by next year.
{Ed666's Note - like I said mate it’s not his English I’m worried about it’s his form. If he plays CB enough this season and plays well then signing him is a no brainer irrespective of his anglais.
30 Oct 2026 22:16:21
Fair enough Ed666, and given the concerns we had on the boards when he joined regarding his fitness, then I think it is worth seeing if his body can last out a full PL season.
I don't think we need to see too much of him at CB though, as, given him proving his fitness through more of the season, then I would be more than happy to spunk the money based solely on his RB showings.
{Ed666's Note - mate there’s better right backs out there for 45 million plus
30 Oct 2026 11:33:44
I'd have no issue with Trent coming on loan in January.
The fans can vent their frustration or welcome him back which ever side of the fence they are on. If Iraola then fancies him great try get a permanent deal done, if not then back to Madrid he goes.
From a footballing point of view I would much rather have TAA as an option than Frimpong. Maybe Xabi could take him to Chelsea.
30 Oct 2026 11:53:52
I'd say a loan would be the worst option. If he were ever to return he would need time to a) rehabilitate his relationship with the fans and b) improve his physical conditioning to be able to play Iraola's demanding brand of football. There's no window for either of those in a 6-month loan deal.
We are building a new team and you can feel something brewing again. Let's not make a signing, loan or not, that will distract from that.
Time to move on.
30 Oct 2026 11:58:22
Why are you bringing this subject up, nobody is interested in this and I think most of us have had enough of it, please move on to something of interest please!!
30 Oct 2026 11:58:46
I really like the balance with Araujo at right-back and I'd feel confident in our solidity going into any game. Can't say the same for Trent. The defence is looking as settled as it has been for years and the last thing we want to be doing in the business end of the season is shoehorning players in and experimenting.
From a purely footballing point of view. I don't want him.
30 Oct 2026 12:52:17
Just an opinion so don't crucify me as I may be wrong - given our present perceived challenges in midfield I get the impression that Andoni's present tactics are defenders who can defend first and attack second - if that's correct I don't see a world where Trent is the answer - we are not the team that had 3 wild dogs hunting down possession in midfield and 3 red arrows giving defenders sleepless nights - Trent was incredible in that team - that team no longer exists.
Team has moved on, clubs moved on, managers moved on, tactics have moved on, the games moved on and more importantly TRENTS MOVED ON.
Build a bridge and get over it.
30 Oct 2026 12:52:30
For me a lot would rest on who was paying the insane wages that he was offered to screw over his childhood club.
30 Oct 2026 13:20:00
Calm down and just scroll past it Darren.
30 Oct 2026 12:31:13
Why would we want an injury prone way past his best defensively incompetent right back? And particularly one who feels that the club isn't good enough for him and his delusional belief he's good enough to win the Balon D'or.
The cretin made his choice and he can enjoy the consequences of those choices. We can't go throwing a £300k salary at someone who is barely good enough to sit on the bench.
{Ed666's Note - I can see your point mate. But if he was available relatively cheap and would drastically reduce his wages I’d take him back. I know it’s a contentious subject for most fans but he’s still an incredible player that can unlock a defense in a heartbeat
30 Oct 2026 14:01:48
I'd take him on loan. Would only consider buying him if he absolutely positively smashed it out of the park until May though. If he did that who knows? Dont think it will happen though. Gonna be strange watching Trent play for another Prem team as that's the most likely outcome.
30 Oct 2026 14:05:34
You're all forgetting he'd only be 3rd choice here too. Though ramsey may have something to say about that.
30 Oct 2026 14:19:57
VV, I have to say i love every part of what you just posted, good on you pal.
Never a truer word said on here.
30 Oct 2026 14:28:59
Think many would have had Trent back had he left on the right note - if you look how others have left on free transfers Bobby, Millie, Robbo etc they announced well in advance they were leaving & in those cases they left because the club chose not to renew. By all accounts Trent had made the decision to go to Madrid for a long time, so if he'd have come out and said "I want to try something new etc" most would have been upset but most would understand - he left under a cloud & I think moving to Madrid was a poor choice simply because they are such a volatile club. Would he have chosen Madrid if he knew Jose was manager .perhaps not because I don't think he's a Jose type player like he would be for say Alonso or Jurgen.
Would I have him back, I'm not sure. He's not great at defending but when he had Gini, Hendo & Fabinho in midfield he was covered when he went walkabout - now we don't have that midfield shield so first & foremost I want our fullbacks to be able to be a good defender primarily and anything else is a bonus - look at Ronald - at RB he's still getting forward, not as effectively as maybe Trent would but he's been solid at the back which has helped us enormously without Frimpongs weaknesses there.
30 Oct 2026 14:56:41
Have some b****y standards, damn it. "He's still good at football, pal" - I don't care. That little swine sold out his boyhood club in order to prance around Madrid and appease the second worst club in football.
30 Oct 2026 14:00:58
He's finished at the top level, Ed666, absolutely rinsed. My 14 year old springer spaniel has more pace, athleticism & mobility than him. There's absolutely no good footballing reason to waste a transfer fee or salary on him and anyone saying otherwise is saying it for sentimental reasons and nothing more. He would immediately weaken our starting 11 because he is so woeful defensively.
{Ed666's Note - you know what I like about you Victor is you tell it how you see it. At times I may not agree with you but I respect the fact you don’t sit on the fence.
30 Oct 2026 14:46:03
Ed666 - Do you see a world where Trent is willing to take a big hit on his salary and Madrid doing anyone any favours on a fee?
I have no idea tbf but both seem unlikely - not sure what length of contract Trent signed but I'd guess it's still got at least 2/3 years to run? The fact he let his contract run down with us tends me to think he's on big money he's unlikely to get anywhere else? He'd be leaving a fair few million on the table if he left and he's got a contract that guarantees it.
I'm aware he's not fancied by Jose but Madrid will likely sack him if he doesn't win a quadruple this season so does Trent eat a giant portion of humble pie and give up on his dream or does he sit it out, keep banking the Euro's and pray Jose gets the bullet?
Would be a major ego check if he walked out with his tail between his legs halfway through his first season - when he's got a contract that will probably outlast the managers?
{Ed666's Note - there’s no chance he comes back to Liverpool mate like you said he’s not gonna leave millions on the table.
30 Oct 2026 16:17:54
Edd666 he's not the same player atall. We should not be spending a penny saving that lads career he derailed on his own. Or a penny to the richest club in the world that will continue to do try and do a trent on us numerous times over regarding contracts.
I wish this page would play on repeat his Madrid press conference. Not the Spanish speech on the knees to the president. His press conference laughing around Liverpool and when he learnt Spanish.
{Ed666's Note - Come on Ron the fella was seduced by Real Madrid and generational wealth. Not many would have said no. I’m not pining for him to come back and we probably don’t even need him but if I had to choose between Bradley and Trent there’s only one winner.
30 Oct 2026 16:56:41
What Vik said.
{Ed666's Note - I’m clearly a romantic and a sentimentalist…I’d still have Sadio playing in the left instead of Gakpo..To be fair I’d prefer John Barnes on the left over Gakpo
30 Oct 2026 17:00:17
Edd666 this wealth talk is redundant if we're referring to salaries. Liverpool were alledegly offering him 350k a week which was more than Madrid. If you're talking about the sign on fee, it was a lot less when Madrid paid their buttons for him.
Edd666 one winner for who? It's time the discussion came to the fore of why multiple managers now don't rate him.
Tuchel, alonso and now mourinho. They're fully aware he can pass the odd great ball but he sat on their benches.
You're reminiscing about a younger trent that no longer exists. This is what I'm talking about. This opinion is not formed on the now 28 year old trent who can't get about the pitch and is still defensively weak.
{Ed666's Note - Ok he was a very naughty boy but we forgive our own unless he a dick like Konchelsky. I hear you Ron and I respect your opinion but to say Trent wouldn’t do well in this current team is a bit of a stretch in my opinion.
30 Oct 2026 17:39:20
Leave him there. Get the lad from Benfica.
30 Oct 2026 18:12:18
Edd666 he's not our own. It was accepted by the fans he can do what he wants, it's "his career"and"players have no loyalty". So he's not "our own". Trent doesn't play for Liverpool to be that. No 12 had a great Liverpool career. I hope it remains in the past.
Remember, he's not coming to help us. He wants the club to revive his career. He clearly doesn't fancy learning another language and isn't moving to another Spanish club.
This Chelsea move people's speaking about. He picks up as many injuries as James now and will be James second choice. We don't need him. He needs us and I hope that if andoni is asked, andoni is shown his real Madrid performances because that will put a stop to all this nonsense.
{Ed666's Note - he speaks wonderful Spanish mate he was taking lessons while he was at Liverpool. I respect your sentiments but I can’t castigate or malign him because I would have done the same in his position.
30 Oct 2026 19:43:52
Oh my, look at that, another day and another post about Trent Alexander Arnold, how can the new day possibly get any better?
30 Oct 2026 19:49:02
I genuinely didn't fancy Araujo when we signed him, but his work ethic, passion, willingness to get stuck in, his infectious enthusiasm, leadership and his ability (he's technically decent and he can actually defend) have won me over, that's what I want to see in a Liverpool player.
Not some big time Charlie in Prada dungarees who farts higher than his own bum hole. Arnold can go to Chelsea. That's his level.
30 Oct 2026 21:53:55
100% with VV on this. We can get a much better and hungrier RB for a fraction of the cost and who can actually defend.
30 Oct 2026 21:10:40
Edd666 so you're a miverpoo.
30 Oct 2026 21:11:49
Edd666 do you're a Liverpool fan and you would have ran down your contract at 26 to play for Madrid? 😂😂 I wouldn't be in the trenches with you lot! 😂😂.
{Ed666's Note - he’s not breaking the law mate. He’s just working the system. Who am I to judge him in his ethics when he’s done nothing wrong. The fella does a tonne for charity and I’m ok with his character. Like Ed’s 002 used to say players are transient employees it’s just not that serious mate
31 Oct 2026 02:19:28
Ron Funk is Harry right? The same person who jumped ship to support City before we won the lot with Klopp is now lecturing us about being Liverpool fans.
31 Oct 2026 08:28:58
The day has only just begun too WDW.
Plenty of time for this to snowball.
30 Oct 2026 11:19:35
Hi Diddly Ho,
Various European teams have been approached to see any possible destinations for Harvey Elliott.
Presumably some English clubs will have been approached too, but I've only heard of the ones on the continent.
Reading between the lines, maybe Valencia are trying to cut the deal short? Could also just be looking ahead to next season, but thought I'd pass it on.
Diddly out.
30 Oct 2026 11:34:29
Cheers Neddy, I think Elliott probably needs to lol for an ambitious team in the championship and rebuild his reputation.
30 Oct 2026 11:37:45
By all accounts his loan is not going well. 6 games 0 starts 0 goals or assists and 1 red card in 152 mins of football.
30 Oct 2026 11:41:10
Gotta feel for the lad. That year at Villa was hugely damaging for his career. And then the coach that brought him to Valencia left shortly after his arrival.
Ideally he would stick it out at Valencia for the season and make it work rather than move again.
30 Oct 2026 11:52:01
The Sporting director and manager that signed him are gone at Valencia he'll be coming back in January.
30 Oct 2026 12:34:18
It was Elliott's choice to come back to training unfit and over weight. Reality is that he's not good enough to be a starter at a top class club and he's struggling for minutes in a team at the bottom of the Spanish league, he doesn't have the physicality or mentality unfortunately.
He should have been sold after the u21 tournament when his value was at its highest.
{Ed666's Note - I agree he’s not of a high standard anymore that injury he suffered against Leeds really messed up his career. He seems like a great kid I hope he can capture some form back.
30 Oct 2026 13:08:19
Probably cruel to say, but I don't feel the least bit sorry for Elliott. The guy has access to the best professionals, both sportsman and medical alike, as well as experts in numerous different fields to ensure he is primed and ready. Opportunities many people could only dream of.
The bare minimum that should be expected, of a professional footballer, is to be in shape and, instead of that, Elliott came back noticeably - and I do mean noticeably - overweight. Last year of his contract at Liverpool and he didn't put in the work to fight for his place, or to put himself on the market to attract the interest of decent teams.
Valencia have openly talked about how shocked they were to see Elliott in the shape he was in when he arrived. That is on him. He let himself go and he is feeling the consequences of that now.
Hopefully rebuilds his career, but that is a long climb, and Elliott has already shown what happens during a setback.
30 Oct 2026 14:02:51
Yeh it's been reported today Valencia will be looking to cut the loan deal short alright.
30 Oct 2026 14:07:33
Think he'd be better off in Germany.
30 Oct 2026 17:01:24
I read somewhere that he's had a falling out with the manager too, lines up. I agree scouse John, I think he'd be better suited to the Bundesliga, it gives him more options and a better chance of getting back on track, if things didn't work out in the Championship where would he go then?
{Ed666's Note - I think a move back to Fulham might be a good idea?
30 Oct 2026 09:53:19
Aleksey Batrakov is under serious consideration.
30 Oct 2026 11:39:00
I think we need some new scouts.
Doesn't look like anything special in Turkey, doesn't play in a position we're weak in and would take up a non-HG slot.
Unless we're selling a lot of better non-HG players to accommodate him then it looks unlikely to me.
30 Oct 2026 12:35:35
A lightweight attacking midfielder with no real
end product, exactly what we need.
30 Oct 2026 13:42:14
Untelated but who is your prime realistic target for the double pivot signing VV? Do you fancy Camara?
30 Oct 2026 14:22:53
We routinely get this type of media hype undoubtedly created by agents. Or just the media itself for lack of subjects to cover.
We have Wirtz, followed by two aspirants to the AM job in Szoboszlai and Mac Allister. Why would we look at a 4th?
Sounds like another Mikkel Damsgaard. The cat's whiskers during the World Cup, and then silence ever since.
30 Oct 2026 14:48:55
If we recruit a player in that position, they will be young and ideally have an opportunity to qualify as HG - Gilberto Mora, in other words.
30 Oct 2026 16:23:15
We're already signing someone young who will have an opportunity to qualify as HG - Samuel Martínez turns 18 in April and then will join us in the summer. Bayern and Arsenal were also interested in him.
30 Oct 2026 17:01:59
Tidy little player but do we need another lightweight AM?
30 Oct 2026 19:49:56
With due respect to those who watch Turkish football on a regular basis, you can learn an awful lot about a player with an extensive 2 or 3 minute extensive review on YT can't you. Let's hope the club scouting system can afford the bus dare toavtuslly watch the lad play.
29 Oct 2026 19:35:16
L. Camara linked via a few media outlets for Jan - 55 million euros.
29 Oct 2026 20:44:17
Alexis is not signing, he's posturing.
29 Oct 2026 21:26:09
Posturing for what purpose?

He wants to play in Spain, which is more like home, culturally speaking.
It would also be gentler on his body, which has a lot of miles on the clock.
He said he felt left out that he didn't get a new contract when the others did, but he will have plenty of options when the time comes.
Athleti would be my bet.
30 Oct 2026 00:47:23
I hope at least we get some money for him and he's not gone on a free.
30 Oct 2026 02:44:42
I was told he was unhappy last season and looking for a move to Spain FSW.
He is trying hard right now for a new contract but he was dire last season, and easily replaceable for me, sell for £60-70m and buy Sadiki is something I would love the club to do.
30 Oct 2026 04:16:59
It's a shame he wasn't posturing last year.
It seems that he plays an awful lot better when he's posturing. Perhaps he has adopted the football equivalent of method acting used by Robert De Niro and the like?
30 Oct 2026 05:21:27
The trouble is, WDW, is that even though he himself is playing better than last he was last season, Liverpool aren't that much better in midfield with him in the team. He has good technique in attack and a spectacular goal in him, but he simply isn't a good enough central midfielder overall and that's all there is to it.
He still loses nearly every duel he contests, is out the game once the opponent is goal side, and play acts even when Liverpool are being countered and the ref is ignoring him. The result is that Jacquet and VVD have too much defending to do, and we can't control games like we need to.
30 Oct 2026 07:04:52
I wish Grav and Szob were posturing as Macca is playing way better than those 2 this season.
30 Oct 2026 07:27:51
Dom is a good defensive number 10 or even a right-back in my eyes. Grav has had half a great season and the odd good game since joining the club, while Alexis seems to follow a good season with a poor one.
Andoni has his own ideas about what he wants from his midfield, and I suspect he'll gradually replace all three members of the title-winning midfield.
Personally, I think we looked much more solid with Dom playing as a 10, particularly in Premier League games. However, if Andoni intends to continue playing with a midfield two, I suspect he'll be looking for a different profile of player.
30 Oct 2026 07:28:41
I like the 'switched on' Macca who isn't bad when he's actually trying. I don't think he is the solution going forward but alongside Trey I think 5hey are our best bet as the '2'. I'm not sold on Gravenberch, who seems to me to be unconvincing in the role and I think Dom doesn't really fit. You could argue that Grav and Dom could play in Wirtz's position but he FW is a better player in the attacking role than the other two put together.
Posturing or not Macca is playing well in the role especially when paired with Nyoni, but I'd swap him in a heartbeat for Sadiki from what I've seen.
30 Oct 2026 09:25:45
Would definitely like to see more of Macca and Nyoni in a two to see how their partnership develops.
So far they have played 269 mins together and signs have been promising.
29 Oct 2026 14:51:41
Hi all,
Trent and his team are sounding out, through media intermediaries, the possibility of returning to Liverpool.
This is not an option on our side.
29 Oct 2026 15:05:30
Good he is yesterdays news.
29 Oct 2026 15:12:51
He learnt well from Owen. He just need to sign for Newcastle and the Manc to complete the circle now. You made your bed, lie in it.
29 Oct 2026 15:18:53
Better to let that ship sail. It would cause too much disruption. If he gets his place back, then Araujo has to be moved back to CB. He didn't come to us to be backup RB.
And if Araujo moves to CB then that disrupts that entire Jacquet, Leoni, VVD, Gomez, Ndukwe thing. Too much of a hassle. Maybe some improvement in offense, maybe not, but at what cost?
29 Oct 2026 15:51:19
Trent and his team can sound out anyone they want - only thing that matters is what Andoni and the club want - if they think he will improve the starting 11 and it's at the right price then maybe, who knows.
I imagine he's on silly wages though and can't see us wanting to get anywhere near them, can't see Madrid giving him away for buttons either 🤷♂️
No doubting he was a class player for us for a few years before he started thinking he was Pirlo and convinced the waistcoat he was a midfield starter for England. However If that's what AI thinks the team needs then fair play but I don't see it myself.
29 Oct 2026 15:55:30
He gave his entire youth and adult life to Liverpool. Won everything. Then he wanted a change - as most of us do. Certainly I would have. Wanted to test himself somewhere else, experience something outside the confines of a city where he was worshipped by many.
I understand that for some, him leaving felt like betrayal. But back in the real world. I applauded him. Sure it would have been nice to get £100m for him. But he had given heart and soul for so long. He deserved to go after whatever challenge he could.
For all those that now speak ill of him - are you still working for the very first company you started working for? Or are you still with your very first boy/girlfriend?
We forget in all our adulation of our heroes that they just as human as each of us. And at the same time, these pages are full of attacking a great player the moment he does something not to our liking.
I actually think it's pathetic. Why not say - yes for sure he's a great player but wouldn't suit out system anymore? It's way better than belting out vitriol. Which is so easy sat behind a keyboard.
{Ed025's Note - hard to disagree with that Duffer, good post mate..
29 Oct 2026 16:06:24
I can only agree Duffer.
Would he, like any other player we buy improve our squad..Yes!
That is what we want at the club. The Club is bigger than all of us. YNWA.
29 Oct 2026 16:10:12
It's not that he left, Duffer, that angers a lot of people. It's how he left.
If he was up front and honest about his intentions to leave as soon as he knew it was a foregone conclusion then I think fans would've been far more accepting of it. It's not like he was some martyr putting body and soul on the line for the club for nothing. Like other players, he was rewarded handsomely with a lovely wage slip during his time here. On his way out the door, he leveraged the fans love for him through the media to get himself in a comfy position in Madrid.
29 Oct 2026 16:14:25
Duffer you have no idea why he moved, same as the rest of us - unless you know him personally off course?
I agree with your statement regarding being at the club since he was a kid etc, but I guarantee you if he'd started out in Tranmere's academy instead of ours he'd have been out of their sharpish - Trent did very well out of being at Liverpool under Klopp and Liverpool done well by having him as a player - but you paint it like he sacrificed something by being at the club.
I have zero idea why he moved, or any interest - as you say he can make his own decisions like the rest of us can. I'm not having we should all think he's worthy of eternal adulation though, for me he turned into a living version of his ego and stopped being the humble kid that got him where he is - hopefully this experience might bring some of that humbleness back (I doubt it personally tho)
29 Oct 2026 16:16:15
i always thought that he could have been a half decent winger, but for
mane and salah obviously being much better.
i totally agree with you about the haters on here, just look at the crap young bradley gets, a fine rb, unfortunately got a massive injury, now everyone hates the lad and calls him injury prone and not good enough.
to be honest its a bit shameful the way people talk about our players.
29 Oct 2026 16:24:29
What Victor said - fully agree pal.
I think his mind was made up when Slot subbed him off early in the season when he was practically popping up on the left wing.
He was a great world class full back, bang average inverted one, and championship level midfielder.
Slot wanted a full back, Trent wanted a free role - I called him leaving during the game, and I wasn't gutted, I'm not saying he was a bad fullback far from it, but if the manager wants you to do a job you don't want to do - you become Manchester United and nobody wants to see that, not even United fans haha.
29 Oct 2026 16:49:41
Difficult situation because it feels like this is cutting your nose off to spite your face in many ways. A player who is probably much better than any of our current full backs overall (possibly harsh on Araujo who hasn't put a foot wrong), despite the fanfare regarding his defensive capabilities more than competent enough and better then probably 99% of available options. That said the way he left, his effort level particularly in that United game at Anfield and age got to be factored in.
Real shame it ever came to this as his 'dream' Madrid move has probably stopped him becoming the full time captain of his boyhood club and treated as a legend which his time at the club he should be having won the lot.
29 Oct 2026 16:56:16
Just got wind of similar information surprisingly.
Diddly out.
29 Oct 2026 17:10:31
TAA would cause the same dressing room disruption as Rashford returning to man utd, Andoni would not have him, even if TAA paid his own transfer fee, that would entail LFC literally crawling back for him on their hands and knees, this club is too big for crawling back for any player past and present.
He made his bed, let him "LIE" on it.
YNWA Andoni.
29 Oct 2026 17:11:01
@Alex - just my opinion pal
Trent is without doubt one of the best passers of a ball I've seen, that includes set pieces, corners etc.
If that's what you want from a full back then he's world class, my view is what does the manager want though - Southgate didn't fancy him, Tuchel doesn't, Jose doesn't etc 🤷♂️ for me that's only one of 2 things: his ability to do what they want and need, or his attitude and willingness to do it?
For me Trent is deadly when he has time and space on the ball as his right foot is like the Elder Wand - put him under pressure, close him down, put one over the top and turn him etc then the thing that makes him great is nullified and he's just a defender and that's where he stops being world class.
I loved Trent still do but that doesn't get away from what any team needs or manager wants from their fullback. If a team sets up to give their full back time and space to hurt the opposition and wants a set piece master then Trent's your boy - if you want a pure defender who can get up and down and will be disciplined there's better options imo.
29 Oct 2026 17:14:32
I don't really care how he left, I just don't think he's good enough anymore to improve the first team and I don't think he would work as a right back or a midfielder in the 4231 that we're playing now.
29 Oct 2026 17:15:54
I agree with Horse that the crucial opinion is the managers. I don't think he will fit the managers plans but I'm happy with whatever Iraola thinks.
Rushie was the exception but by and large you should never go back. It never really works out. Even someone as good as Ronaldo couldn't make a success of coming back.
For that reason alone I'm against the idea but happy to go with the managers choice.
29 Oct 2026 17:19:17
Trent's mind was made up to leave when he started to learn Spanish.
29 Oct 2026 17:25:46
Crazy Horse, I do agree with regards to only ever Klopp has 100% been on board with him and there has always been rumours on his attitude but you'd like to think he'd come back with a point to prove and goes back to does he improve on Bradley, Frimpong etc that's 100% a yes.
As touched on by others, it rarely works out well when players go back so probably best to steer clear.
29 Oct 2026 17:31:28
Won't happen. And I don't think it should.
29 Oct 2026 17:51:11
I am going to give my two penneth here.
I thank Trent for helping us to win all of those trophies.
I have no issue with him leaving or the way he left.
I don't really want him back but if he came back I would cheer him on.
29 Oct 2026 18:04:47
He would get games as a rotation player, who wouldn't want that passing range Vs certain set ups?
City, Chelsea or Arsenal would be my guess though.
29 Oct 2026 18:25:51
Aruajo is our RB and CB, and he is really good but also his leaderrship qualities of being a captain are seen in games.
Jacquet is a future captain, which you can see by example,
Trent coming back doesn't improve the squad it will just move us back 2 years.
29 Oct 2026 19:15:11
I Wonder if he's learning Scouse?
29 Oct 2026 19:37:52
He ran his contract down to earn the massive contract and to appease Madrid. Doing that as a scouser is why so many are angry, disappointed and even disgusted.
29 Oct 2026 19:40:41
Who cares what he wants? He didn't care that the fans wanted him to stay. Zero Fuchs given on his behalf back then, let him go to spurs bright lights big city play in white but probably better off in Germany. So it's a big fat no from me.
29 Oct 2026 19:48:14
@Alex - agree prime Trent probably improves us over Bradley & Frimpong even if it's just him generally not being injured as much as they seem to be.
My question is: let's say the club decide they want a new right back, would they just limit themselves to looking at Trent - for the transfer fee and wages are there better options - in the same way you're thinking is Trent still better than we've got, do you think he's better than any alternatives we could go after?
29 Oct 2026 19:49:36
Depends on the package, fee, wages etc
Free up to 10 million no problem.
Wages he was on before he left, no problem.
Big apology - a must.
Let us not pretend he does not have a skill set we could easily utilise.
29 Oct 2026 20:59:10
The alternatives out there is what brings me back to probably favouring Trent coming back. Palestra was one mentioned in pre season and being at the game last night he offered nothing when he came on and played left back, Gusto was rumoured in the summer and again he was terrible last night. Read from Feyenoord obviously is talented but coming off a big knee injury in a much weaker league, Kayode at Brentford in a back 3/5 so how much does that cover his weaknesses as it did with Frimpong.
I suspect there are plenty of options out there that I haven't realised as potential options, my few year sabbatical from football manager has really begun to show!
29 Oct 2026 21:07:02
Would love to have him back.
29 Oct 2026 21:23:51
Evening.
Two questions on this, rather than forcing my view down everyone's throat.
1. Are we a better team since he left?
2. Would he make us a better team?
I think we all know the answers. Football is a simple game.
29 Oct 2026 21:31:40
@Shughes, yesterday's news you say? Why are we talking about him today and, no doubt tomorrow?
29 Oct 2026 22:52:46
He ain't winning the ballon do'r as the third choice Liverpool right back.
29 Oct 2026 23:01:49
Completely agree with Duffer. Nobody knows when he decided to leave, when did he tell the club, what said during negotiations, what promises were made or not etc etc unless anyone knows Trent personally or one of the staff negotiating. I would have him back, why, because he gave us something that we now miss. However if the manager says No that's it.
29 Oct 2026 23:33:03
For those old enough to remember, macmanaman was castigated for announcing he was going at the start of his last season.
Like I said previously you're damned if you do or don't. Just because players are local doesn't mean they have to shackle themselves to the club ad infinitum. It's a relatively short career so let's have some perspective please and leave the lad alone.
29 Oct 2026 23:35:09
Top of the range virtue signalling there Duffer.
Arnold Rat can do one. He could have stayed and been a club legend, but he clearly decided going to Madrid means more. He's injury prone and absolutely rinsed. Don't want that cretin or his equally cretinous brothers anywhere near the club.
He's 29 next October, he's not going to get better or improve his defensive performances and his fitness is just going to get worse as well. He can join Tranmere or Everton for all I care, though I'd expect even they have standards.
30 Oct 2026 04:20:59
Can't wait for the next exciting daily episode of 'Trent, love him or hate him', coming to your choice of social media tomorrow.
30 Oct 2026 04:26:43
For the right money (fee and contract), the right motivation on his end then I would pursue him for sure.
In the high likelihood that he doesn't return then I hope he is just left be. doesn't sound like he's wanted by a bunch of fans anyways.
30 Oct 2026 05:23:33
I will be over the moon to see Trent sign a contract for any other club except Liverpool.
30 Oct 2026 08:24:05
Some good responses on both sides there.
But the jilted ones stick out like a sore thumb.
30 Oct 2026 08:38:19
Depends on his wages, what the manager wants from his RB - and the his attitude / willingness to do what the manager wants.
If all those things align, have to say Trent is a better option than either Frimpong or Bradley.
Also depends on whether the club have deals lined up for younger RB's (like Kayode or Banjaqui). But there's not that many good RB's around atm.
30 Oct 2026 09:00:32
Trent was fantastic for us and noone can dispute that but that was under Klopp, we have moved on and i don't think he fits in the team anymore. but if AI wants him then we will just get behind the team and manager as always.
30 Oct 2026 09:23:14
I'm in the "moving on" camp. An excellent ex-Liverpool player who left for pastures new.
I don't particularly bear any grudges, just a firm believer in "Never go back".
All things must pass. He moved on, so must we.
30 Oct 2026 10:29:23
I'm all for him coming back, especially if he improves us.
What I didn't like about how he left was his brother getting involved (similar to what Mainoo's brother was doing to get him back in the team)
The main thing though from what VG has said is that we're not interested by all accounts. I think it's probably good that Iraola wants willing runners and is maybe looking at alternative options which would be more viable?
Be interesting to see how this plays out!
Cheers for info VG.
30 Oct 2026 11:53:15
We got the best out of Trent. He's been on the decline for a while. Loved him during the Klopp years but we need a rb who can defend.
30 Oct 2026 16:21:49
Lol duffer,
Pull the other one. He's got humiliated at his "dream club" and got found out as an overall limited player in a physical game. You try to gaslight fans in supporting the club spending tens of millions on a past it player to save his career he derailed himself.
Why do soo many top managers not fancy him? Gaslight on that.
29 Oct 2026 10:01:18
Great result. Good performance.
Nyoni looks ready now. Very good performance and looks a mini gravenberch when breaking the lines.
I hope the club signs a top DM in. January and a LB. I've no problem with Araujo and Bradley as the RB options.
I think the LB options are extremely weak for a massive football club. Kerkez is sub standard. I'd want a top LB to go straight into the first team.
29 Oct 2026 10:28:16
Agree on that, if we can sign a player who can be disciplined enough to sit in front of the defence would free up Wirtz or whoever plays 10 to roam more.
LB - agree I'd hoped that Andoni might have been able to coax the Bournemouth Kerkez back but it ain't happening - would be costly but Lewis Hall would be my pick there.
29 Oct 2026 12:09:05
Trey is everything Grav is not. Really impressed with him so far and can see why they trust the young lad.
As for transfers, at this moment in time I would be looking to secure Lamine Camara and Daniel Banjaqui in January, with Banjaqui being loaned back to Benfica for the remainder of the season ala Jacquet, avoiding an auction in the summer.
With Tsimikas out of contract, the LB is an obvious one. Sounds like Joaquin Seys is the frontrunner. Gomez will probably not be renewed, with Big Ron being signed. The rest for the summer depends on what our plans for Marmadashvilli, Gravenberch, Gakpo, MacAllister, Virg and Alisson will be.
29 Oct 2026 13:29:08
Agree with most said on this thread.
FPF, Banjaqui looks great, but I'm not sure I would prioritise him this year (Jan or summer) UNLESS Bradley's injury is potentially career ending (and I hope to go it's not for us and him personally).
LB, i agree we need someone. I used to think Tsimi would be fine as a backup for a couple of years or so, but seeing his performances so far this season, I was guilty of rose-tinted specs when he wasn't here last season. He's not the right level to be a starting LB for us (if Kerkez was injured) and whilst I understand Robbo's decision, I would have preferred to keep him for 1-2 more years as Kerkez could learn so much from him.
Camara would be my pick for Jan, and possibly a LB.
My gut feel, based on the fact that IKFA and a sprinkling of optimistic hope, is that we would extend Virg for 1 year, Ali for 1-2 years, Gakpo I would probably let go, ideally not to a competitor (unless we could do some pseudo swap deal for Semenyo or Minteh), so ideally overseas. I know Bayern had some tentative interest in him in the summer, that would suit and possibly brings Olise into the equation too.
If Alisson signs, I would sell Mamar, and have a group of GKs with Ali as the daddy, with Jaros and/or Pecsi and Luca being groomed as the likely LT successor.
Finally on the Grav/Macca question, based on current performances I would keep Macca and, certainly if AI wants to persist with a double pivot, sell Grav. A few moving parts here - Nyoni's progress and a recruitment of someone like Camara may mean we may decide to cash in on both. And there's obviously a contract to be negotiated with Macca.
29 Oct 2026 13:50:11
In an ideal world, Macca, Ali, Virg stay. find it a genuine shame Gomez's injuries, I think he's quality.
29 Oct 2026 14:33:47
if Kerkez got an ounce of support from Gakpo the left flank would look a lot better.
29 Oct 2026 14:52:43
Zedd, agree with most, but disagree on Conor Bradley. He's not good enough, never mind available enough. Banjaqui would be the replacement for Frimpong anyway and would challenge and probably take Bradley's place fairly quickly, he's that good.
I fear Alisson has set his heart on moving to Italy. Would love to keep him around for another year or two though as help young Brughmans settle in.
29 Oct 2026 15:00:52
Kerkez makes me nervous. Dunno why he just looks a bit frantic and error prone. I like Tsimikas but I don't think he is good enough to start inportant games.
Gravenberch is a head scratcher. He looks great sometimes but other times he is complete dross. He doesn't seem to have any discipline or want to cover defensively. He isn't a great tackler, as in he picks up cards often. I just think we could do better. Nyoni is better.
With Gakpo also, I just don't get him either.
He plays for himself. He is just as greedy if not more greedy than what Salah was. This frustrates me. He took his penalty well, and what about Gomez? Flipping buried that penalty. Shame his body can't cope with the demands of the league. He'd do well in Italy I am guessing.
Araujo is great. Hope we keep him and he keeps up that level of performance. I think it is lifting the rest of the teams performances.
29 Oct 2026 15:16:40
FPF
I would have no hesitation to sell Gakpo, Gravenberch, and release VVD and Gomez.
VVD is a legend bug definitely 2-3 levels below where he used to be.
Joe is a fantastic player on his day, but can't sustain it, and his injuries have plagued his career.
Gravenberch doesn't suit Iraola and needs selling.
Gakpo will move on, I hear he actually wanted it in the summer, it will happen.
MacAllister is a tricky one, I see him as a great squad player, no more, snc he thinks he is better than that.
I'm living the dream still that we will buy Camara and Sadiki both of whom deeply strengthen our team/squad.
Seys seems to be the flavour at LB can see that happening at some point but more likely next summer.
RB needs sorting as Big Ron will move to the centre and Bradley cannot be relied upon.
Loving the idea of Kayode joining but I see us moving for a RB in Jan.
29 Oct 2026 16:21:17
Shughes55 genuine question. Is the reason for getting rid of Gomez his injuries because you say he's a fantastic player on his day yet the reasons to get rid of Virg is his level of play? Because it sounds like you would gladly keep Joe if he didn't get the injuries yet advocate getting rid of Virg because of his levels of play.
That just seems mental to me.
29 Oct 2026 16:32:34
FPF, all about opinions mate. I think Conor can get to the level of being our no 1. Different to the way Trent played (and referring to the thread above this one, I do agree that the main reason for not wanting Trent back is that he doesn't fit our style of play, leaving the bitterness to one side), and a lot more direct, but that may suit AI.
However, equally, I may just be looking back through rose tinted specs at Bradley's performances (as I admitted to doing with Tsimi) as his injuries have meant that he never really got long enough, in a settled team with a settled manager, to make the position his own.
I really, really could see a future for Araujo at RB, though. Not sure it's what he or the management want, and he is a different style of RB again, much more defensive, understandably, but I posted a few weeks back that whereas under Klopp, Trent was the one who got forward more than Robbo (albeit Robbo also did his fair share when we had Fabs to step back) we could switch to the LB being more offensive and Ronnie being there with the 2 CBs to shore up our back line in case of fast breaks.
Will be interesting to see what transpires when AI gets his first 'proper' window in Jan (as I think he didn't want to make too many wholesale changes before he got a chance to assess the squad).
30 Oct 2026 02:52:37
Florian,
I have clearly explained why I would choose to let the players leave or be sold, are you bored and felt you had to write something?
