Assuming we don't get a CL spot (still clinging on to that bit of hope), what forwards can we attract to Liverpool that will want to come. Assume we move on Balo and Borini so £20 million max!

The Irish Rover

{Ed002's Note - Obviously the finances don't work like that, but Liverpool still have a firm interest in Ings and Vietto - plus Origi will be arriving.}

1.) 25 Apr 2015 14:00:52
I agree. Maybe i should not have put a figure in as such. With your contacts/opinion would you suggest which would be the better fit for Liverpool. Cheers

{Ed002's Note - I really don't know.}

2.) 25 Apr 2015 16:33:03
Ed do you no if Vietto will come or not without CL football?

{Ed002's Note - I really don't know.}

3.) 26 Apr 2015 01:16:54
no need to assume rover , we will be lucky to get 5th spot , BR and the players are half way to the beach , and we have switched off , its going to be Ings , why ? , he costs less .

Ok, so we are 2 weeks to Christmas! Hard to believe i know but i want you all to spare a thought for other people maybe outside your family circle this Christmas.

Over here in Northern Ireland a local radio station (Cool fm) run a mission Christmas every year. Last year they had requests for 5000 gifts for kids of all ages and sex that would have had nothing to open on Christmas Day. An awful thought for any kid i'm sure you agree. This year they have requests for close to 7000 gifts. It tells me how many families are struggling these days and need a little bit of human kindness.

On doing a bit of research i can tell you that loads of other local radio stations run similar projects all over the UK. The Salvation Army also run a Christmas appeal.

So when you venture out to the town for a bit of seasonal cheer maybe you can spare a thought for those not so fortunate as ourselves. Boots do great 3 for 2 offers for older kids, Smyths toys also! That extra £20/30 will make a huge difference to some youngster this year. Please if you can, do your bit.

Thanks for reading.

The Irish Rover

{Ed001's Note - I will put this on all 3 main pages so it can be seen, great idea mate.}

1.) 11 Dec 2014 16:38:13
Nice one mate

2.) 11 Dec 2014 21:22:56
Who in gods name disagreed With this post ffs get a grip

3.) It's a great initiative and we have the same in Blackpool where the cash for kids charity runs mission christmas. We along with lots of local businesses act as drop of points for your extra gifts which are then delivered to main centres such as sainsburys in our area. All details on drop of points can be found on your local radio station.

All help is massively appreciated.

4.) I normally disagree with most things you say on here Rover but spot on with this one.

5.) Hi it's Bauer media/cash4Kids in the UK. I spent some time with them last week sorting gifts to be sent to underprivileged children. Still time to donate
A premier league footballer turned up while we were there spending possibly 10 minutes doing f@@k all other than getting as much publicity as he could.

Top of the morning Ed02.

A question if you don't mind. When a transfer goes tits up as it has done recently (mentioning no names), Ayre seems to come in for a bit of stick/abuse. Some posters basically claim he is a poor negotiator and very slow in getting deals tied up. In your opinion, would this be a fair assessment? Or is he trying to do the best job he can under the financial constraints he is put under?

I remember a while back you mentioning Liverpool putting in bids way below the asking price therefore not even getting the other team to negotiate. Would they have been better of advised not to go for such players and save themselves from the embarrassment or is there always a chance, therefore worth a go so to speak?

Lastly, leading from the first 2 questions. If Chelsea had not have swooped for Salah would Liverpool have got their man for the price they offered (A third of the asking price?). I appreciate its a bit of a loaded question and I fully understand if you don't want to answer this bit.

The Irish Rover

{Ed002's Note - In my opinion the posters know nothing of the situation at all and as the new type of fan lives only in a blame culture, Mr Ayre becomes the target in such situations. These are the same people who want, Jones, Gerrard, Moses, Allen, Henderson, Johnson, Cissokho, Enrique, Sterling, Agger, Skrtel, Kirikou, Coates, etc., etc. out. There will be a process that decides what sort of money the club will be willing to pay for a player on a case-by-case basis. If an offer is only a third or so of what the selling club are looking for they would typically not be interested in any negotiations as it would be seen as futile. There will also be financial constraints that will need to be adhered to. Aside from interest from Newcastle there was also a bid made by another side for Salah - Liverpool would certainly not have gotten him for the amount they were offering. It was clear that they would have needed to go to Basel with a much improved offer.}

1.) Ed do you think not signing Salah was the right thing to do or not? I'm a fan, I care nothing about money, just want to see my club grow better and better. So please tell me in monetary terms, could not signing Salah deemed a success?

{Ed002's Note - I have no idea what the question means.}

2.) 26 Jan 2014 16:26:50
Wasn't our initial bid for Suarez something like £12.7 million? Only to be practically doubled within a week?
Ed02, any idea if this is true or am I making stuff up?

{Ed002's Note - I don't recall the numbers but it was something like that.}

3.) Krishna, you are asking a hypothetical question and only time will tell if Salah going to be the next Oscar or if he'll end up the next Torress .
The club (Our club) obviously thought he is very useful, that's why they initiated negotiation, the fact that they again failed to complete / close suggests there is a problem that the club need to address.

4.) Eds the question seems to ask whether the club are not prepared to negotiate due to their valuation on players being no where near the selling clubs or is it the fault of Ayre specifically as he is not skilled at negotiating? I hope most fans who use this site want to support the club and not spend their time slagging everyone off but u must understand these events become very public fails in the eyes of the fans and we want to understand why we lose out.

{Ed002's Note - The fans work in a 100% blame culture and have been shown repeatedly to blame the owners and Mr Ayre for another transfer window where eight £40M players failed to arrive.}

5.) It's seems strange all the same that we spent close to 3 months scouting him, he was earmarked to be a starting XI player and yet we wouldn't spend £11mil to get him. Keep in mind we've recently spent £10mil on Borini, £7mil on Aspas and £7mil on Alberto all to warm the bench.£11mil for a starter doesn't seem that much.

6.) Ed, I think the Salah situation does emphasise a problem in the way we pursue players. I accept that we do not have the money that many of our rivals seem to have, but we proved last January that there is a way to do well in January. In that window we went early and we went fast and landed both Coutinho and Sturridge. The issue highlighted in the summer with Mkhitaryan and to a lesser extent Willian, and now with Salah is that we wait too long and then start too low, thereby giving other teams the chance to react. It is even worse in this instance, as Chelsea would probably not have bid for Salah if we had gone for him on Jan 1st, as they would not have had Mata money ( or need to replace him). The fact that nothing happened ahead of the visit of Henry and Werner means we wasted our best chance of stealing a march on the competition. That would seem to have really cost us. This is the best chance in ages to crack the top 4, but it required us to be ready on Jan 1st and then to go quick and hard to get the players that BR deemed to be the ones to improve the first XI. I am not saying it is down to Ian Ayre, but I think collectively the senior team made a big mistake in delaying and then starting too low on our primary January target. From the outside it looks like we are a little naive as to how the market works these days. We don't have the pulling power we used to, so we have to be far smarter in how we go to market, and right now we are just making ourselves look a little daft as we constantly get beaten to players. The biggest concern is that Luis Suarez must be looking at this and going "this is the problem, no one wants to come and join me here!" Do you not think we need to re-think our approach somewhat to ensure we can bring in players who can improve our First XI as opposed to just attracting a plethora of squad players?

{Ed002's Note - The delay in the summer was largely due to Suarez. Liverpool were not in the same ballpark as Basel in terms of price for Salah.}

7.) No disrespect eds just another opinion. I would say the md of a company is pretty good place to start when things are done badly. After all the book stops at the top! In an earlier reply you suggested we had a committee which arye was part of. Let's check his credentials for being on that committee. He had little experience of signing players and doig deals and knows nothing about football. How on earth is he any where near it? Dempsey fiasco was a joke now salah! If we had of signed Dempsey for peanuts I might add he would now be a valued squad player sometimes starter. We need a winger to push on for top four how is it not worth going in at 11 mil? The book stops at the top and yet again the team will just miss out. Same old problems "this time next year". What a shambles. A window when we need decisive action to kick us on for a real possibility of success the chance goes begging. Not just on salah but the whole window. Mata to utd Chelsea sign three. Our main rivals with big squad already put u to shame

{Ed002's Note - Chelsea did not sign three players to replace Mata. So with your erroneous cliché about the "book" stopping at the top, perhaps you should go after the owners who are at the top. A nice little hate campaign to force them out and get Sheikh Al Thani or Sulaiman Al Fahim in?}

8.) I would say all the comments on this thread are generally questions with some sarcasm, frustration and clear lack of understanding at what goes on at MD level in a prem club and especially at LFC so eds002 please try and respond constructively to the debate rather than giving people short shrift.

Are u clear what happened in the Salah deal?

{Ed002's Note - Try not to be an idiot - I am perfectly clear what happened with Salah.}

9.) I didn't say Chelsea signed three to replace mata. I said many sign mata and Chelsea have also bought players. If we are to compete over a season with rivals such as these then we should be getting things done. Low balling for players highlights weakness at magement level not ownership! Ian arye is at the top of management and has a large portion of responsibility. Are you suggesting he doesn't? Our owners have spent millions already there the last in line. The management/ arye have responsibility for putting that money to good use and sign players not mess around until other clubs beat us to the chase.

10.) Why are you arguing with the eds you just come off looking like a pelican. If you don't like there opinion don't come to the site, no one is forcing you to.

11.) Rather than blame us for being too slow isn't it obvious that Chelsea let us, Spurs or another team do the negotiating, agree a fee and then they come in over the top and offer more at the last minute?
That is Chelsea's strategy. You can't blame the management at Pool or other teams for that!

{Ed002's Note - You clearly don't understand how any of this works.}

12.) Let's just stick to the point.We have a great chance of breaking back into the top 4, but we all see we need some help in doing this.Salah, who we scouted and apparently negotiated with Basel for didn't happen.Most of us would of liked to see him in a red shirt, and felt much better about our chance's if he had arrived.But as Chelsea got him for £11m, we are none to happy as to who and why We didn't get him.So we play the blame game, and Ayre is first on the list.

13.) 27 Jan 2014 18:12:38
Absolutely spot on niceaction

Ed02. Have Napoli put a bid in for Agger. Has Agger turned it down? Thanks.

The Irish Rover

{Ed002's Note - I suspect that he will stay to the summer.}

02 Sep 2013 22:03:19
Excuse my ignorance, but did Borini go on loan or not? Was the deal completed? Cheers. {Ed001's Note - yes, he is at Sunderland for the season.}

The Irish Rover

1.) Good luck Borini, work your socks off and come back a better player. YNWA

2.) Think this was a bad move by Liverpool however, with the amount of abuse the lad was getting of his own fans it might be the best thing for him in the long run. You plastic fans ripping into a player who had about a month of actual football uninjured hang your heads in shame, some of the people who support us are an embarrassment. {Ed001's Note - that is the reason he was sent out on loan, too many boo boys on his back.}

3.) I like borini I think he works hard. Hopefully he does well and comes back

4.) If so then it might be very shrewd management, no point him staying here just to have his confidence destroyed.

5.) Borini makes some great runs - He is a very clever footballer who creates space for others.

He will get goals too - maybe not loads but he is a good finisher. Shame he has gone out on loan.

Shame all the fans who didn't see BR as the answer take their frustrations out on a young player who spent most of last season injured - Thought LFC fans were better than that!

6.) Football is all about different opinions. If everyone had the same we wouldn't have forums like this. I don't accept someone being given a 'plastic' or 'boo boy' tag just because they don't rate a particular player. When we pay £725 for a season ticket, and i'm in my 29th year as a season ticket holder, then we hold the right have an opinion even if its not popular. I'll always support the men in Red, through wind and rain. But I'm not so blinkered that I will claim greatness in every player. Borini, in my opinion, wasn't isn't and never will be, of the quality our team deserves. Of course, I wish him well and hope he is a success at Sunderland.

Merry Christmas Irish . Blessings to you and your family and to all Liverpool supporters worldwide. And to you eds25 and ed002.

12 Dec 2017 08:26:54
On a light note. How good has Gomez been? He looks the part at right back, doesn't he? A few million for a player that hopefully could stay for 10 years! Bargain!

The Irish Rover

1.) 12 Dec 2017 08:47:27
Should be playing at CB though. Lovren and Klavan like to think they're these quality ball playing CBs when in fact our best ball playing CB plays at RB. Also our best tackler. Make him Captain and put him at CB I say :)

2.) 12 Dec 2017 09:20:15
Fenton, he will play there before long, although I reckon it'll happen in preseason. Throw him in to soon and he could lose all confidence, especially the way our defense is under the microscope at the minute.

I am a huge fan of the lad and wouldn’t be surprised if he was a future captain. He’s vocal and he has come through the ringer with his injuries so he will know it can be taken away at any point.

3.) 12 Dec 2017 09:22:09
Fantastic to see him improve so quickly and look so assured in every game. but let's slow down and not put to much pressure on the young man.

4.) 12 Dec 2017 09:37:34
I just hope he stays clear of injuries and keeps working hard and we have a special player for years to come.

5.) 12 Dec 2017 11:19:23
Gomez is the future for LFC at CB, that much is clear. Lovren and Klavan are very solid at playing out of the back esp. Klavan of late. Now to make Gomez capt., that's kind of a stretch, don't you think?

6.) 12 Dec 2017 12:38:31
That part of my reply was a bit tongue in cheek BRover! Although I do see him as a future captain for us. Has all the attributes and the quality to be a consistent starter for the next 10 years, IF he stays injury free!

7.) 13 Dec 2017 08:57:36
Isn't he the England U21 captain at the moment?

20 May 2017 18:10:26
815 games and 17 trophies. Xabi Alonso, a truly great player and a top bloke. Enjoy your retirement Xabi and thanks for the memories.

He'll make a great manager.

{Ed025's Note - great player ron, but that does not always follow that he will be a good manager mate..

2.) 20 May 2017 19:08:19
I think he will be a great manager.
He has all the experience you could want in the game, he's worked with some great managers for club and country. I read his interview this week talking about football being a game of intelligence rather than physicality. He's a real student of the game.
If he's got the passion, he'll be a fantastic manager IMO.

3.) 21 May 2017 02:31:12
Proud that he played for Liverpool - what a player and a top top bloke.

4.) 21 May 2017 03:08:48
I can only completely agree with all the above, Xabi has been exemplary as a pro and one of the finest passers of a football I've ever had the pleasure of watching, will be remembered for all the right reasons.

5.) 21 May 2017 09:01:13
Ron may be right that he could be a great manager as you don't play as long as he did at the highest level if you are not a smart, tactically astute and intelligent player. However, will he be a good manager? No guarantees on that, for sure.

12 Nov 2016 16:35:43
I can't really see Liverpool being open to losing Couts and Firmino in the same year. I can see Couts going but i guess Liverpool will play hardball with Firmino for a least 1 season more. Gutted all the same that it can happen tho. We need to be competing for the league and in the Champions League to encourage these players to hang around a while longer than just see us as a stepping stone.

The Irish Rover

1.) 12 Nov 2016 17:32:26
Good point that Rover. Top 4 cup wouldn't be any good enough. Look at Spurs and Arsenal for example. I hope we go for the title this season.

2.) 12 Nov 2016 18:30:46
Couts is only 24 think he should give it to 26 at least.

3.) 12 Nov 2016 19:50:04
That's easy for us to say mr naughty but if he gets an offer from Barcelona I'm not sure he could turn it down.

To be fair I don't think any fans "wants" Liverpool to drop out of the top 4 and if Coutinho wanted to go as we all knew in the Summer
(In fact before then) then more should have been done to find and get in an adequate replacement.

Ed002 might not watch much football but don't under estimate his input. Clearly he knows people who are in a far better position than anyone on this site to give us an unbiased opinion on a player or the club. The issue is that a good deal of fans really don't like the truth or facts, they take it as an insult and get their knickers in a twist. The man is seldom wrong, Fact!

Im not sure that Ed meant backup keeper (no2) but more of a backup if we can't get other targets. Liverpool can't afford to pay that much money out on a no2 when their No1 keeper ain't that hot.

Spanish football is done with their dominance? You do realise that Madrid are the current CL winners? I would hold off on your assumptions until the end of this season to see where we stand. I certainly wouldn't be writing them off. They are both in good positions to go into the quater finals. I can see one of them winning it still.
