We were flying even with the kids onboard playing exciting football. Then came the Utd FA cup tie, a boxing game we should have won but thrown away. That after a bizarre decision to ditch the youngsters and play a near full strength team in the 2nd leg against Sparta Prague.

That seems like the turning point of our season. Perhaps over the international break the coaching staff have too much time to over complicate things, trying to regain control of games by playing the slow and laboured build up way.

But that just does not suit us at all. I was screaming at the TV during the first half of Atlanta game. The backline drops so deep trying to draw Atlanta to press, but when they press, we have no movement or courage to play out from the back. Kelleher would just launch the ball long. The gap between the defence and forward is so big, every single time Atlanta is winning the second ball.

The rot seems to then spread. During the Palace game, simple 5-10 yards passes are going out of play under no pressure. When being pressured, we were trying to make 2 yard passes to teammates that resulted in them being pressed and the loss in possession.

It is just so frustrating and unbelievable that the team is unrecognisable, now that we have the senior players returning from the injury crisis.

A season that had promised so much, seems to have completely collapsed in the past couple of weeks.

3-0 down in the Europa league QF.
City with 2 points lead in the lead. They don't drop points at the home straight do they.

Klopp turned us from doubters to believers.
I choose to believe we have 10 games remaining, and treble is still on. Let's go red.

When all the players started coming back from injury they immediately walked back into the side, a terrible decision.

The youngsters who gave us a bit of fire, McConnell, Clark and Danns, were discarded. They had yards in their legs, nobody could blame them for being tired and in Danns we have our most clinical striker (shots per goals) and he barely gets a look in. If you’re good enough, you’re old enough.

I don’t care about the reputation of Diaz, Nunez, Gakoo or even Salah, if you’re not scoring you should get dropped. A “what if” scenario, a “he’ll always grab you a goal late on” is only any use when it is a true. To not score against Palace is atrocious. Utterly defenceless. They had Hennessy in goal for crying out loud!

I don’t think I can ever recall a more profligate side under Klopp. The front three are as prolific as Ngog or Balotelli at the moment.

As for the goals we are conceding … I would be here for days …

Sad whimper of an end to a season is looking more likely than the bang we were anticipating.

2.) 15 Apr 2024 13:37:31
We decided to use the international break to (again) try and impersonate Brighton.

We have all the pace, power and verticality, and we choose to try to play De Zerbi-ball.

FlyPelicanFly not saying I agree BUT that last line of yours really made me laugh.

4.) 15 Apr 2024 21:58:05
StEtienneAmen, Dean Henderson was in goal for Palace.

Hi Ed1, do you think our team building was neglected over the years after summer 2018?

8 of the starting 11 for the CL win were aged between 25-27. Gini 28, Hendo 29, Trent 20.
For the rest of squad, only 2 age 22-24 (Gomez, Origi) , 5 under 21 with total of 4 first team appearance amongst them (Kelleher, Hoever, Jones, Camacho, Brewster)

The age profile of the team is similar, and was allowed to age / peak together, without any real replacement lined up until it is too late?

Hate to say it but during Fergie time at United, and what City is doing now, they get 2-3 players in that can either go into first time immediately, or real talent that are in and around the team for couple seasons before fully braking in.
This had enabled them to sustain the longevity of their success

Major signings (age) since Klopp joined in Oct 2015
2016/ 17 - Mane (24), Wijnaldum (25), Matip (25), Karius (23), Klavan (30)
Qualified for top 4 in Klopp first full season

2017/ 18 - Salah (25), VVD (26), Robbo (23), Ox (24), Solanke (19)
Lost in CL final

2018/ 19 - Alisson (25), Fabinho (24), Keita (23), Shaqiri (26)
Won CL

Age of squad after the CL win
(Starting XI) Alisson (26) Trent (20) Matip (27) VVD (27) Robbo (25) Henderson (29) Wijnaldum (28) Fabinho (25) Mane (27) Salah (27) Firmino (27)

(Bench) Kelleher (20) Mignolet (31) Gomez (22) Moreno (26) Lovren (29) Milner (33) Lallana (31) Ox (25) Shaqiri (27) Origi (24) Sturridge (29) Brewster (19)

(Not in squad) Clyne (28) Hoever (17) Keita (24) Jones (18) Camacho (19)

2019/ 20 - Minamino (24), Van den Berg (17), Adrian (32)
Won league

2020/ 21 - Jota (23), Thiago (29), Tsimikas (24)
VVD tore ACL - scrape 4th

2021/ 22 - Diaz (24), Konate (22)
So close yet so far to quadruple

2022/ 23 - Nunez (23), Carvalho (19), Ramsay (19), Arthur (26), Gakpo (23)
Missed out top 4.

Kaisuke

{Ed001's Note - mismanaged rather than neglected. You have to remember that Klopp was a big part of the problem as he wanted players kept, when we needed to sell to make room in the squad and wage bill. Added to the incompetence of Edwards and Ward giving out new contracts with far too high a salary to those players that Klopp wanted to keep, it hamstrung the club's operations in the market.}

1.) 17 Aug 2023 19:37:34
I agree with that summary ed001 it was effective very short term but it definitely hampered us long term
Up the pool.

2.) 17 Aug 2023 20:17:31
My favorite player in the league MO turning down Chelsea ??.

3.) 17 Aug 2023 20:47:59
Would Mcginn @ aston villa not be worth a chance?

4.) 17 Aug 2023 20:51:45
We stood still when we had the pull, money and resources and it’s been a fight against time ever since 2019. This club had the chance to create a dynasty for decades and look where we are today.
Also doesn’t help when the fans are content with “We almost won quadruple” and excuse year after year of poor spending.

5.) 17 Aug 2023 20:55:53
I always feel like Klopp has no experience of how to keep a winning team at the top. That does involve moving players on sooner and keeping the squad on their toes. You can see the impact of that now. Getting no money for Bobby, Keita, Ox was poor. The same will be said of Matip and Thiago. I also think we've given shockingly high wages out to players who hardly played or offered enough. That has to improve.

6.) 17 Aug 2023 20:56:01
Klopp lacked the ruthlessness that the Liverpool and United dynasties were built on. You have to sell players before they become a problem and push them out the door if need be. Klopp said himself that he refused to do that to anybody. All he wanted was to keep the boys around as long as possible. I think he has now seen that was a mistake.

Nonetheless, not strengthening after the Champions League win was a huge mistake. Not because the players weren't good enough or needed replacing immediately, but because we've been playing catch up ever since. We needed a Gini replacement, left back and another forward in that window. Instead, we were forced to wait another year. Then we waited another year, got all of those in, but then couldn't' get a centre back.

Going even further back, I'd say the Keita signing was a turning point in hindsight. It was the first time we didn't do our homework on a player, signing him on Mane's recommendation. That has gradually become the norm over the years since, culminating in this transfer window where we're seemingly ready to take just about anybody.

7.) 17 Aug 2023 21:44:56
The thing is, it didn't even need to be a case of Klopp being really, really ruthless and completely breaking apart a winning side. All that need to happen, do was 2-3 years ago, for Klopp, or someone at the club to say: "Right, Ox is crocked, Matip is just a bit short of where we need him to be, and Keita isn't the player we signed. Move them on. If we take a £20-30m hit on the transfer fees vs. what we paid for Ox and Keita, so be it. It's nearly £15m a year in wages we won't be paying. "

I can't prove it, but I would bet any amount of money that Fabinho and Henderson wouldn't have looked one bit as knackered as they did last season if we'd had proper players to rotate them with.

Maybe there was no concrete interest in our excess players. Maybe with C.V. and the resulting depression in the transfer market the club thought they were better off keeping Ox and Keita and hoping they'd come good. Maybe it's all FSG's fault. Maybe Klopp and the coaching staff were just blinkered on this issue. I dunno.

8.) 17 Aug 2023 21:54:02
It feels like 2019 and 2020 were massive missed opportunities, we could’ve signed anyone we wanted during those years. 2022 was the same to an extent as well.

9.) 17 Aug 2023 22:14:32
I'd be content with almost doing the quadruple every season. Some folk are never happy ?.

10.) 17 Aug 2023 22:26:42
There was an interesting message sent to some clickbait site (so it was probably made up! ) that said that in 2020/ 21, Edwards was very keen on moving on the older higher paid players and bringing in younger blood. But Klopp remained loyal to the players and gave them longer contracts (Hendo and Milner were mentioned) .

Edwards had found a couple of young talents overseas (South America) that were available for (relatively) low fees - £10-£15m ish each. Their names were Bruno Guimaraes and Enzo Fernandez.

It may have been made up, but certainly sounds plausible.

11.) 17 Aug 2023 23:04:20
We could've kept Milner and Hendo though, Zed. That's what frustrates me. Love 'em or hate 'em, they weren't the problem. They were usually available to play and if you started them you wouldn't have to pull them after 60-70 minutes (or earlier) cos they'd stopped bothering.

The problem was Keita being injured half the time, barely giving a toss when he wasn't injured, and Ox who missed a whole year, spent another six months building his form back, then got injured just as he was looking like a player again, and was never right again afterwards.

12.) 17 Aug 2023 23:27:36
Villa valued McGinn at £50M last summer. I think he would just be a squad depth option so I'd steer clear at that type of money, he would want chunky wages and I would be very surprised if he wasn't looking for significant playing time - he's plenty good enough that he should be playing regularly but he's not good enough to make our best 11. We have plenty midfielders at a similar level to him already.

13.) 18 Aug 2023 00:55:53
People are being a bit harsh. Have to remember klopp prior to here, has endured a management career of constantly losing players from sales. So of course he will be a bit more attached, I think he's learned now.

14.) 18 Aug 2023 02:33:18
for all of the criticism that I throw Edwards' way, he does strike me as the kind of black and white number cruncher data driven analysis guy that would want to wheel and deal for young players with potential. So, no idea if that is true about guimaraes and enzo, but that kind of approach feels like Edwards preferred way to work. And then I can see someone like Klopp, being the football person, vetoing that idea.

So anyways, in a decades time I look forward to some kind of book that reviews this period in our chapter! Between Buvac, Edwards-Ward-Jorg, Mr. Intensity, medical department make-over, early fitness issues etc etc would be a fascinating read!

15.) 18 Aug 2023 07:37:13
Faith as we are now discovering, Edward was just a numbers guy and a damn good one. The DOF job was not a job he was qualified for, apparently. Also, he didn’t hire himself in that job. The club did.

@Nevada, I agree with you that it’s a bit harsh on Klopp for real due to the context you mentioned. This is where a real DOF would step in and get in his ear and let him know his blind spots for over keeping players. Sadly, Edwards was not that guy.

16.) 19 Aug 2023 00:36:21
The same team that in the previous season came so so so close to securing a unprecendated quadruple, why not put your trust in those same players who have come so close to something very very special? I don't get the untrust of Klopp, I think he's overachieved over the course of his tenure when comparing everything compared to resources of Man City, Chelsea, Real Madrid etc, he's worked wonders for us imo.

Hi Ed1,

Always amazed by your in depth knowledge in the team.

Over the years, we had some promising young strikers that struggled to breakthrough for 1 reason or another.

Names that came to mind include

Dani Pacheco
Rhian Brewster
Bobby Duncan
Paul Glaztel

I am mindful that Brewster and Glazter suffered couple of serious injury that must have hurt their developments.

We have now Oakley Cannonier coming through banging goals for the youth team.

I know they are still kids, and will develop differently.

But would like hear some insights on how the list of forwards are rated coming through, and what are the reason for them falling a bit on the wayside.

Since it had been a while since we had young strikers breaking through (Owen and Fowler I believe)

Cheers!

Kaisuke

{Ed001's Note - injuries were the issue with Glatzel, they completely derailed his career.

The other three were all the same issue - attitude. This is why I do not like signing younger players unless they are moving to be with a club they support. Otherwise they are only really moving for money to join a club like Liverpool. There is almost no possibility that they are going to break into the first team more easily than they would at their current club. So they are moving for the wrong reason and they have achieved their aim the moment they arrive. That removes their drive and desire to achieve. They no longer train as hard or work at making their way in the game, as they think they have made it already. It almost never works out unless they are joining the club they support ala Elliott. Then they have a reason to join and work hard each day in training.

I know Duncan was a Liverpool fan, but his attitude was honking, he was far too big for his boots and also had the wrong people around him.}

1.) 19 Sep 2022 12:57:45
Do you know how the club view Cannonier? He has been electric for the u18s this season but surely a long way off making the step up?

Cheers ed.

{Ed001's Note - the plan is, I am told, to push him up a level and see how he handles it during the season. The club sees potential in him but want to nurture it carefully.}

2.) 19 Sep 2022 15:36:21
One I was excited about was Christian Nemeth but I think he got a bad injury to if I remember rightly.

3.) 19 Sep 2022 16:34:06
Crazy to think. Most football fans would sweat blood for a chance to be a professional footballer if they had the talent.

Some people have all the talent with no application.

4.) 19 Sep 2022 19:35:34
I don't know why someone like Jordan Ibe failed. Seemed to have all the talent in the world.

5.) 19 Sep 2022 20:46:50
Kaide Gordon seems to have become the new Lord Lucan, i have seen him several times around Woolton Village with two very attractive females, one time he was sitting in the beer garden of a local hostelry, they were all on soft drinks, that will change now in his case as he will be 18 on 05 October, so will be able to buy the "two" of us a Pint of Guinness each. Bruce Grobbelaar is often seen around the Pubs also, he came into my local last season towards the end, around tea time and asked the Barmaid for a pint of lager, the Barmaid said we have four lagers which one of Stella, Carling, Coors and finally Fosters, he relied " i don't want any of that Aussie S----"!, so he must not like the Aussies, the ending of his surname makes him a typical scouser "LAR"!

Cannonier is on the "SHORT"? list, he must only wear a size four football boot.

6.) 19 Sep 2022 21:19:53
Just say no to drugs kids!

7.) 19 Sep 2022 22:03:36
Ye might as well live in a monastery kids!

Footyfan, is your nickname the "OLYMPIC TORCH" as ye never go "OUT"!

8.) 19 Sep 2022 23:04:35
Wow! What a come back! Total burn. ??‍♂️.

9.) 20 Sep 2022 00:26:02
Is that The Grateful Dead I hear?

10.) 20 Sep 2022 09:41:32
Spot on, Ed01. Actually, you addressed this very topic in your last podcast I listened to on Sun, amongst many other great topics. You used Liverpool signing both Harvey and Carvalho as an example of the way clubs esp LFC, should sign young players. In both cases, you said that we should sign young players who are already playing consistently in the first team/ first 11 (Carvalho) and/ or sign youngsters who are both LFC fans and in the first 11 (Elliott) .

This is because they know what it's like to play in high pressure games and therefore, the probability that they stay focused is there cos if they don't, they lose their spots in the first 11. You said that it is not good to sign academy players from other clubs cos the very response you gave the OP is almost what happens with these kids and end up getting sold for peanuts or well, do a Bobby Duncan.

{Ed001's Note - it is surprising it still goes on because the number of times it actually works is miniscule. Why people in football are so slow to learn is anyone's guess, but they do struggle to learn from previous examples.}

11.) 20 Sep 2022 10:21:15
Clubs are willing to gamble. If you sign 10 kids and 1 works out, it will have been worth it to the club.

9 lads who'd have been better off staying put until they were at least 20 or 21 is not a major concern to a club who now have a first team player acquired relatively cheaply, or someone they can make profit on.

{Ed001's Note - but it is more like 1 in 1000, if that many.}

One more thing I would add is the seemingly lack of urgency.

Correct me if I am wrong, but what I noticed during corners is that Konate and VVD would stroll up the pitch, when what we need is for the game to speed up. Palace are taking a minute every goal kick and throw in (earlier in season players are getting booked for taking 10 seconds, but seems the ref are totally ignorant of time wasting now. Hopeless)

Recall seeing VVD evening guesturing for Robbo to slow down/ wait for them to amber into the box at the start of the 2nd half when we were trailing.

Kaisuke

{Ed001's Note - that was very frustrating. You would think they would bust a gut to get up and get on with it.}

Agree with JK. The only passing triangle is between VVD, Konate and Allison!

There is no width, no pace in our play, playing into opposition hand in slowing the game down. I find myself continuously screaming play, play the ball, move it faster (it is a consistent theme for the past few games) - this is an aspect Matip is good at, despite his obvious short comings.

Do not get Trent tucking in to CM, and Szoboszlai going to RB slot either. Trent being at CM is not able to get down the line and put the dangerous crosses in.
Against low block, it is wasting his talent, as there is no space in behind for him to put in any through balls.

We end up seeing him trying too hard, putting in crosses from way out, which their CBs are dealing with easily, because as a DM, he can’t be bombing forward down the line leaving the team exposed.

Read that we have over 30 shots, but watching the game, there isn’t really any pattern of play, nor I recall many clear chances created, if any at all.

It feels we are relying on individual moment of quality to win the game, which we have gotten away with at times this season.

There are arguments that this system provide more defensive solidarity. Yes, but we will outscore most of the team either way. Watching how the game developed, there is higher chance of Utd hitting us on the break for a 1-0 smash and grab than us scoring!

The number of draws will come back to bite us at the end of the season. Hope I’m wrong though.

Endo was being made abit of a scapegoat. It was so narrow in the first half with totally no width, and Virgil and Quansah giving him 5 yard passes when he is facing the goal with nowhere to go.

The only time we in the first half we attacked down the flank, Trent created a chance for Mo in stoppage time and Szoboszlai had the rebound deflected over.

In the 2nd half it was so much better simply because Gomez attacked and got to the byline constantly.

The league is there for the taking, my worry is too many draws stopping us in the track.

Was screaming whole game for someone to get out wide to provide some width. Shocking that the coaching staff cannot identify the issue really.

On the game, it seems the first 20min is too easy for us. Running through the midfield, getting shots away at will. (Nunez alone with 4 or 5)

Seems the team got complacent thereafter, thinking it’s a matter of time before we score. As Luton switch to low block, we just run out of ideas, resorting to hopeful long shots.

Very very poor from our end.

We have suffered through armpit and backside offsides and now this. There is no excuses for the error I’m afraid.

Jones tackle was never a red card. Never a clear and obvious error for Var to intervene either. We have seen far worse challenges, boot to the chest no red card given and Var did not even intervene.

The Gomez incident from what I see the defender did not get the ball. Again no review for penalty. If it is against us even the slightest touch will be put on slow motion replay to prove that there is a touch and penalty against us.

Pure corruption and unfortunately money talks.

Kaisuke
