Question for the eds. Was there ever a player that signed that you hand on heart thought would be world class but just fizzled out or didn't perform. For me it was Ings I honestly thought we had a class player on our hands but it just never worked out either through injuries or new players coming in.

{Ed001's Note - world class? No, but there have been many that have not been as good as I hoped or thought they would be when we signed them. Keita stands out recently, as so many people told me he was amazing before we signed him. I was really excited thanks to what I was told and the very little I saw of him, then he spent the next year being an arse over there before joining us and flopping miserably.}

The one player that stands out for me this way was Fabio Aurelio he was a very very good player but couldn’t stay fit unfortunately.

It has to be Harry Kewell for me. Such a let down!

Jari Litmanen for me. Was so excited when we signed him as he looked world class at Barca. Some great compilations of him on YouTube. We never saw the same class in our red shirt.

Joe Cole
Was really excited when we signed him but he was poor.

Does anyone remember the away game at Palace, it was about Keita's second game for Liverpool.
Cruyff turn under pressure down in the corner and an instant 60 yard pass on the money.
I almost spontaneously combusted in delirium.
It was so good it was the highlight of that entire season for me.
Sadly, it turned out to be the highlight of Keita's entire Liverpool career.

Morientes for me. I thought we'd signed one of the best and smartest forwards available but he couldn't handle the pace of the EPL.

Nuri Sahin for me I was so excited to seen him join. But never worked out.

Danny Ings world class?

I remember that, Juicer. Although it wasn't technically a Cruyff turn.

Maybe Anelka for me.

Robbie Keane. Phenomenal striker at Spurs was always in the right place at the right time and scored shedloads. Put a red shirt on and he was utter gash.

There's a lot to choose from, IMO. Naby, Sahin, Morientes etc. I can't seem to pick the worst.

Harry Kewell.

The kind of season he had with Leeds and then goes bust here.

Jari Litmanen for me.
I think it was made all the more disappointing in that Houllier just never seemed to want to give him a run in the team. I remember a cracking goal against Spurs being about the highlight of his time with the club.
Robbie Keane was another signing I thought would be brilliant for Liverpool but alas the footballing Gods had other plans.

Agree - kewell - I was so excited and remember the price being about £5m - steal! Just wasn’t the same player in red.

Aquaman for me.

Rigsby, I thought Anelka was a great player for us, gutted he didn’t get the chance to stay.

There’s been a fair amount of disappointments over the years. Hard to pick a standout, Andy Carroll for the money spent, Aqualani again big money but I thought we would get more out of Nigel Clough apart from 2 goals against United he was pretty plain, Stan Collymore too could have been a superstar .

Harry Kewell for me. Never forget his half volley for Leeds against Arsenal at Highbury. Always thought he was a classy player at Leeds but then he came to us and was terrible, not to mention injured all the time.

I agree in a way, Irish.
I was very keen on Anelka when he came and he started well. He did seem to go off the boil a bit and we ended up for Morientes. I don't know the reasons for that but Anelka was rapid and technically good, as well.

Kewell during Houllier and then Cole during Benitez (I think? ) .

Both complete let downs.

Anelka was awesome and deserved to move to Liverpool.

Cole came in under Hodgson. Shame really as I think he could have been a better player for us but he was in a poor team.

Agree with a lot of the names above. Kewell, Morientes, Litmanen etc. Also wanted to mention one we didn’t sign

I was absolutely gutted when I thought we were getting Damien Duff but missed out, he looked incredible for Ireland in the 2002 World Cup. He did ok for Chelsea but never really kicked on, I thought he was going to be special. Wanted him more than Kewell.

Ryan Bable for me, thought we snagged a generational talent, but didn’t pan out. The other for was Morientes, I was so made up we managed to get him, but again didn’t pay out.
