Said it a couple of months back and I'll stick by it, don't be surprised if Nunez heads to Spain this summer and not on holiday. For everyone crying out for a CB, who do they replace in the starting 11 because vvd or konate aren't sitting on the bench.

I not keen on Nunez. Yes he's raw, yes he's young, but some of the shots, passes and decisions he makes have me think he's not gotba footballing brain at all.
If we got back the money spent on him I'd be inclined to left him leave. The only problem, who replaces him?

Baz.

Where do you think Nunez will go to in Spain? I can think of only three clubs that could give us close to what we paid for him.

I think he'll stay for at least one more season, he's now had time to adjust to the league, the language and the culture. If he doesn't bag 20+ goals or he throws his toys out the pram not starting week in week out we'll sell him next season. We won't get more than £50m for him though unless he has a very good season, so it is a slight worry.

Selling him already!
I see plenty of potential in him and see him playing a big part in the seasons to come. He’s a nightmare for defenders.

We’ve started playing 3 at the back.
We don’t need to replace VVD or Konate but we do need to upgrade on Matip and Gomez particularly if we move one on.
Konate is also picking up too many injuries and VVD ain’t getting any younger.

If someone came in with a decent offer and it meant being able to buy a quality player who we need I’d say yes. I think he’s a bit undercooked for the PL.

I can't understand the purchases of Nunez or Gakpo. Gakpo has poor first touch control, worse than Salah and he's bad, poor acceleration. Nunez has talent, but i agree that he's not demonstrated much of a football team game brain. and both seem to miss sitters with regularity with a lack of composure . Bizarre purchases both of them. Worse of all. I can't see where either of them fit in. Nunez will always be second to Diaz and I would rather see Elliot as a false 9 that Gakpo up top. They do not add anything to the creative pool. Their combined values would buy someone useful and selectable.

{Ed025's Note - troll alert..

Nunez is a really tough one to comment on as he was so up and down.

I could certainly see him having a really successful career in Spain.

I could see a troll starting in the false 9 position.

Viva if you weren’t so obvious you may just get away with it. Gakpos first touch is excellent and many a time he has accelerated past players. File under troll, must try harder!

I think Nunez criticism here is a bit harsh. Yeah he’s raw but in an up and down season where he was in and out the team with a lot of sub appearances, sometime playing centrally and sometimes left he still managed 15 goals, a fair amount of assists and was unlucky to not have more goals with some top notch saves made against him and hitting the post. I think he will adapt and be an absolute beast of a striker next year. My only concern is that he does seem to be reliant on his and I’m not sure he has enough in his all round game to account for that as he ages and slows down. Still young though I guess. I wouldn’t sell him.
Whoever said Gapko is rubbish is off their nut.

Surprised by the Nunez comments. The lad has done well considering change of country going from Portuguese league to the premier is a big step up. He’s tall strong and he’s quick. He can finish too. If he had come in a different year to haaland and the demise of the centre mid we’d probably be saying good goals return now push on next season. Good player imo.

Good player? Open to debate. Fits our system? Not shown anything so far to suggest he does. Maybe he has this season to improve but so far seems to be the wrong player for our system. He needs to learn how we press from the front and link play or Klopp adapts to suit him which I hope doesn't happen.

Nunez?
I want him to succeed but he’s more Emile Heskey than Michael Owen when it comes to finishing.
Nightmare for defenders, just not goalkeepers.

Gakpo? He’s an excellent player and an excellent buy.
If we got £35 million for Nunez I would not be surprised to see him leave. I’d be disappointed it didn’t work out because I want it to but not shocked. I think we pay more based on achievements which also points to a possible earlier exit.

{Ed001's Note - I think you forget how many Owen used to miss Ron. He was a terrible finisher too, but it was just the team was set up to provide him with every chance. I lost count of the number of times I used to get annoyed with him missing chance after chance, only to finally notch one and everyone around me suddenly forgetting about the 10 chances he had already messed up. He was no Rush or Fowler that is for sure.}

Nunez could be Klopp's second big mistake in the TM. As JK said, there are things that can be trained/ learned and things which are instinctual and either there or not. Nunez was a big big risk at the money we paid. One good season in the Portugese league is not enough.
He's had his proverbial kick up the backside with the sending off and Klopp's comments about the press and language. Now its on him. Who would pay 50 for him if he fails at LFC? And who decided that we needed a raw striker over a MF last summer.

17.) 15 Jun 2023
15 Jun 2023 09:34:25
Rush would have scored a goal with 2/ 3 chances. Owen needed about 6 chances before he’d Findlay score.

I feel I got to back Nunez on this, the criticism is harsh on him.
The whole team was not prepped well for last season.
Everyone wasn’t right, the system wasn’t right, injuries early on and low morale in the team.
People already asking for him to be gone or sold is not fair on the lad. He did alright in his first season with his number of goals and assists.
He has a hot head and is raw like everyone says. But as Liverpool fans, that is something we really like in a player. That fire in the belly and drive! He has that, he does need to hone in on his weaknesses and temper a little but he’s a good player who can succeed and do very well for us.

Initially my previous thought last summer was that Nunez was looking to be the next one in for our new front line. Diaz was the first of the three, then Nunez and then gapko. All young and got a good 5+ years in them to grow.

I was thinking the initial strategy with the whole salah issue last year was that. LFC didn’t want him to go on a free, so my hunch was, they said to salah, we will tie you down and give you the contract and wages you demand; with the intention to possibly sell next summer (this one) . So that way salah would get the wages he wanted, possibly the big final transfer he wanted, lfc got 1 more year out of him and he did very good considering the season we’ve had, plus due to the contract. We could get a hefty sale for him.

Leading onto the new frontline for lfc, Nunez, gapko, Diaz. I can see Nunez and Diaz interchanging and swapping sides or the front 3 being interchangeable with jota/ doak/ Elliot from the bench.

We have aging players and as amazing and incredible salah is, I love the guy and what he has done and achieved for us. But it is getting to a point where, what is his value worth to other teams? To us, he’s priceless, to someone else though… a 32 winger who eventually will slow down and regress. They may not value him the same. There are very few players who can replace what he does and has done. But I think the plan was that the new front three would be the solution. Nunez may not be able to reach the numbers of salah, but he has got the potential to be a 20+ goal per season player. Diaz is more in the 15+ range and so is gapko. Along with the goals being added from other parts of the field. That’s should in theory be enough.

Last thing I wanted to say though, people ripping Nunez for his misses, yes I get frustrated with them too but tbf, some are great saves or off the post. But salah has had his fair share in his time of missing so many sitters or having opportunity after opportunity. Not every striker is perfect. But Nunez has got the potential to be a top striker and player for us. So we should be backing him rather than already knocking him off.

Some great responses and debate on this post, pros and cons either way I just want to express that I am by no means Nunez out it's just what I'd heard. Up the reds!

15 goals in his 1st season. I'll take that. He's going to be a beast that guy. I'm more worried about mo salah actually and he's a legend but struggled a fair bit this season.

You can’t compare mo salah’s missed chances to Nunez, mo salah is a winger, whereas Nunez is can player as a central forward, which I think is his best position than on the left wing. Looking at some of nunez’s misses, some were so bad, he’s go clean through and rather than look to place it, he’s just put his foot through the ball and hope it wasn’t saved. A lot of his shots that were saved were not because the opposition keeper was great, but more because he just shot straight at them. I’m hoping he will settle down and learn the lingo, as there is potential to be a great player. I’m not sure he has a good footballing brain mind you, definitely had the ability though, just needs to be able to tap into it.
