Great win, lads. Way to give it to the Al Newcastle fans (just stole that from SM) and letting them know they need to sit down and keep quiet cos they ain't anywhere near our level yet.

Now I know the officiating has been done to death BUT can someone help me here.

I just learned that the PGMOL literally changed the rules for this season so that a foul denying a goal scoring opportunity is a yellow if outside the box and defender made attempt at playing the ball.

Therefore by the rules the VVD foul on Isak should have been yellow and not a red card as it was outisde the box and an attempt was made to make the ball.

So if that is true then, how did VVD get a red for the foul on Isak when it was clearly outside the box and not taken down violently?

Because of a mixture of incompetence and corruption.

The fact that Mike Dean is still sat on sly sports on a Saturday offering up his opinion on the laws of football tells you all you need to know about the standard of officiating in this country.

I suppose the crux of this is whether or not the ref thought VVD had attempted to play the ball. My guess is he thought not and VAR backed him up. Personally I thought it was a soft one but, I think so anyway given how things change, they are the rules.

@Inceadible, So the rules were not applied correctly. I am stunned.

Thanks guys.

But they were applied correctly OliRed if it's considered that VVD didn't attempt to play the ball. Much as I hate to admit it, he gets Isak's ankle first. It's a soft red for me but them's the current rules.

If that is indeed the rule then any eejit can tell VVD would have been going for the ball without even needing to see the incident. Why would one of the most experienced defenders in the league deliberately do something like that knowing he'd be getting a red for it? Even then he got the ball. Just happened to get isak first.

How does this change? Why do clubs not come together to give a no confidence vote in the PGMOL? No one club is targeted, but surely they're all fed up of the constant incompetence.

Johnnyr1970, I see your point and I get the fact that it is a matter of interpretation so personally, Im over it. We won by showing guts, courage, desire and a will to win which pulled us thru. Hopefully, we can play better vs Villa.

He got a red. He will get a suspension. Maybe an extra one plus a little fine for acting petulant.

It's done. We'll survive a few games. Because that's all it is. A game.

Clearly he was playing the ball as he actually came away with it - just took players ankle first as he got there first.

I think the OP should chill and relax about officials.

For me it’s a soft red but a red all the same, if botman had done that to gallon would we all be saying he shouldn’t walk?

To be fair Johnny even if it's an accidental foul it's still a red card. The double jeopardy rule only applies to penalties (makes sense, you haven't really denied a clear goalscoring opportunity because if they have a penalty they get another one) .

Deliberate foul + last man + inside the box = Red Card
Accidental foul + last man + inside the box = Just a penalty/ yellow
Accidental or deliberate foul + outside the box + last man = Red card

Bottom line, it's a debatable decision but it was probably the correct one and if it was the other way round I'd have wanted a red.

It’s not a bad foul anywhere else on pitch it’s probably not a yellow card but it is a goalscoring opportunity so is a red. What is annoying me is all the complaints about Trent not being sent off yet these people aren’t mentioning it was Gordon that should’ve been booked in the first place for a foul on Trent that wasn’t even given. But because it’s Trent they look for anything to put him down.

It was very soft but this one will stand. Unlikely that a player from one of the other big teams would have seen red but we know that is how it goes and we have to learn to live with it and stop giving refs opportunities to give decisions like that. It was a careless and lazy challenge.

My bigger concern was VVDs reaction. As club captain you can not react like that. He has to lead by example and that is not an example to give the other players. Trent’s yellow was a similar concern. Yes, 100% he should have been awarded a free kick but picking up a yellow card for petulance so early in the game is a major concern (and could have easily led to his own red card) and something that VVD and TAA need to get on top of if they want to be leaders on the pitch.

Agreed Ibiza - Gordon shoves Trent heavily in the back and gets nothing, but then those same fans claim Trent deserves a yellow for the mildest of contacts? Look at it in slow motion and his arm is on Gordon’s shoulder and then pulls away as be realised the danger he might be in.

How is it even a "goal scoring opportunity" when Isak still had to face Alisson, the best GK in the World? 99 times out of 100 Isak doesn't get the ball past Alisson. And the refs knew this. ??.
