City’s money by itself is not the end game for football, it appears. The problem is the combination of the unlimited money and Guardiola’s managerial ability. One without the other leads to either a situation like Man Utd (City often looked very dysfunctional as a club before Guardiola), or regular underachieving seasons where Guardiola runs out of ideas (11/ 12, 13/ 14, 16/ 17).

Klopp is enough to keep Liverpool very competitive when the club has the appetite, but the difference between the spending of City and Liverpool is greater than that between Liverpool and Burnley, quite frankly. The gap is just simply too much to overcome on a long-term basis, unless Liverpool can somehow reduce the spending power imbalance.

We only have ourselves to blame for this past season. The same goes for the 20/ 21 debacle.

We consciously went into those seasons short and paid for them. It was not about the club being short of funds. We chose to gamble and lost.

This Man City team is nowhere near as good as the 17-19 team.

Regarding last night's game -
I don't think I've been as happy to see a player score this season as much as Henderson yesterday. He was absolutely superb last night and you could just see pure, unadulterated joy from every fibre of his being when he celebrated.
I haven't been his biggest fan over the years, largely due to not fully understanding exactly what he does for the team, but there is no question he changed the game last night.
A question for Ed - Henderson looked great making runs into the box, and his timing was excellent - has he ever been considered for this role regularly?

{Ed001's Note - it was his role until injury problems mate.}

Top class cm. One of the best around. I would say the most underrated too.

Big shout to klopp for starting keita and his tactics down the left.

Couldnt watch the game. Too much pressure but i kept checking in.

2.) 06 Apr 2019 09:43:17
Robbiesline you got to watch it mate it’s part of the ride you’ll back after and think why did I miss that 👍🏻.

In the 14/ 15 season when Hendo was first made captain he played a very attacking box to box midfield role and was superb. 7 goals and 15 assists that season. His vision for a pass is superb and his runs off the ball are fantastic. Klopp mainly converted him to a deeper role because of injuries, and partially because nobody else in the squad was anywhere near his tactical level of understanding.

4.) 06 Apr 2019 09:55:21
for me, Hendo is one of Top 10 CMs in the PL (and no, it isn't red tinted glasses Ed025). His injuries no doubt has costs him his pace, durability, endurance, but last night of a reminder of what he brings to the team when unleashed.

Fabinho is a better DM than him no doubt, but in the 2-3 years Hendo had played in that role, he has been very good.

I just hope that when claims the PL and CL this season (fingers crossed! ), he'll be given the due recognition as a captain and player.

Top 5 cms in prem for me.

And i know longthing. But if we play at night i can never get to sleep afterwards. My body aches as i am literally clenched for 90 mins. i've been through the heart break too many times dude. Last season's final.
That chelsea game. I have never felt so empty after watching a game. I cried after thr ucl final last year but losing tp chelsea left me with a stone in my chest.

But winning the biggun in 2005 balances it out. And the treble season, i was walking on air.

7.) 06 Apr 2019 11:27:33
The way he set his body up to shoot it was never going to miss. Those easy chances though do get missed sometimes usually by players who have started celebrating in their heads before touching the ball. Hendo is reliable and professional. Was always going to score. I also liked the way he was pointing to where he wanted the ball when Firmino looked up.

8.) 06 Apr 2019 12:36:52
Robbieline--I completely agree. I kept flicking between channels and checking the score as I just couldn't take it! But then, as Longthing76 said, I regretted not watching it all the way through. Its part of the ride. I am going to try and watch it all now.

Unless that was the reason we won? Maybe I should keep doing it. this season is messing me up!

9.) 06 Apr 2019 13:25:38
Spot on, MK. People (somne conveniently) forget what a force Hendo was as a CAM in the 13/ 14 and 14/ 15 seasons. He was such a force in both seasons that City were VERY keen on him till he singed his big contract. In fact, I remember a game vs City in the 14/ 15 season at Anfield where he scored a scorcher (Cou got the second in a 2-1 win) and he (and Joe Allen) bossed Yaya Toure and Fernandinho off the pitch that Sunday afternoon.

It is his injuries and change of position (something he did for the team to the detriment of his own game) that has slowed him down which is why he is not as effective as he can be at times. Last night, he was unleashed and people may just see the goal BUT what people did not see prolly, is his awareness.

Notice that he was the ONLY player on the pitch backing up the play when Bobbie chased a lost cause. He recognized the situation and knew that Bobbie could only play the ball across into that space hence broke his neck to get there. It's called game intelligence/ awareness, something his embarrassing detractors know very little about.

Atletico are well-drilled but are otherwise, frankly, a rank average team. They have no outlet to get them up the pitch apart from Carrasco, who is also mediocre. Adrian doing what he did, as well as Salah and Mané showing the world how not NOT to finish, were the only reasons we didn’t smash them 6-0 in the previous encounter.

Zeddicus, no need to be snarky. My opinion is that Liverpool should be targeting among the best players around now. We have an unreal football team, and should be focusing on two additions a year to improve the first team and therefore the squad, with the remaining places given to promising youngsters from the academy. I don’t see any of the names mentioned improving our first team. If we don’t have the money to improve the first team directly, wait and look for future avenues to do so.

If it is financially impossible to sign Saul this summer, we should just leave it. None of the above mentioned (Bowen, Sanches, Aouar) are good enough for us.

Bissouma is a really good player, he would certainly be one I’d target if Saul was just not possible (which it seems is the case) .

Spaceman - The Athletic and TIFO are stocked with Football Manager obsessives who think the entire game revolves around stats and formations. Listening to the guys at TIFO try to analyse football is a painful experience I wouldn’t recommend to anyone. Don’t forget they were among the first to attempt to justify Southgate leaving out Trent for the Euros. Ignore their ‘recommendations’.

This is the story that comes out every time a player changes settings on their social media profile (s), and the majority of the time there is very little evidence to corroborate the threats or “abuse” allegedly received. Sending threats of a violence or racist nature is already illegal and authorities have the technology available to ensure the majority of those who do it can be caught.
If players want the benefits and reach that social media platforms bring (they would collapse overnight if the only things that could be said were positive), they have to accept that some people are vile, have poor self-control and little ability to consider the consequences of their actions, and that the Internet offers these morons carte blanche to say whatever they like when they wouldn’t dream of doing so otherwise. IGNORE THEM.

Changingofthegvardiol (reference to rival player in username? )
Konate doesn’t deserve to start. He is unfit to be a starting center back at any club because he can’t keep himself in good shape or injury-free for a reasonable length of time. It’s absolutely not good enough from both him and our medical team.
Let Quansah be the starting CB alongside Virgil and see if Konate has it within him to win his place back. He is a better player (at the moment) than Quansah, but good CB partnerships are rarely about the quality of individuals solely.

Good read, Seano.
I agree with a lot of what you said other than a few of the players to be assessed rather than kept or sold. In the same way that Gravenberch and Jota should be sold, Szoboszlai should be kept.
Van Den Ven as well? He’s an athlete rather than a defender.

Insofar as Klopp reviving the club and completely turning it around from the perennial sinking ship it was, yes, you could say Klopp is akin to Shanks - not as good but similar. But Paisley? No. Just no. Paisley is greatest of them all. Klopp is nowhere near, and neither is anyone else.

Ed, I say to anyone who’ll listen to read your opinions on players if they want to know who is or isn’t good, but I just can’t behind Trent being a midfielder. He’s slow, lacks aggression and bite in duels, isn’t particularly agile or fast on the turn, and seems to take little interest in improving the defensive side of his game - of the flaws he has defensively, many have been there since he broke through.
Jones, MacAllister and Trent make for a midfield of superb quality but almost no athleticism at all. It will get overrun and overpowered.
