Surely our defending will get a lot better now that TAA is out for three or four matches. I’m an avid reader of the stuff written in this forum and unless I’m very much mistaken there are a considerable number of contributors don’t rate his defending which, one might have imagined, would be the mainstay of any quality defender. Who knows though, maybe I imagined the negative comments.

There's this increasing tendency on here by many to revisit the past, particularly comments and statements made by posters. I have no problem with that at all. What I question is the taunting and mocking tone and insinuations that come along with it. What's to be gained with that? Who's handing out the brownie points or the medals? Let me know, because I'll get in line for that, too.

Nothing personal WDW3, I like your posts and you're a well balanced, thought provoking guy. My comment is more to many of the others. Some of whom only mock and taunt, and then slide back into the shadows when things are calm.

As far as TAA is considered, my take is this. Is he World class? Yes he is. Is he superb going forward, being creative and passing? Yes he is. Is he as good defensively as he is offensively? Probably not. But that changes nothing for me, because he does a good enough job defensively. He is still World class, and he will remain so whether he's playing as RB or midfield.

We need to get rid of him. Sell him and buy a replacement.

Who are we talking about again?

Aray there’s not a fullback in world football that doesn’t get beaten every now and again by a forward.

But there’s not many fullbacks in world football who are world class going forward in possession.

Thats what sets Trent apart.

and, at the age of 25, already provided more premier league assist than paul Scholes (world class AM) in his entire career!

For his ability w the ball at his feet I'll take the odd defensive hiccup no question. We have the best defense in the league so I'm not worried at all about Trent defensively. Happy to see Bradley get a run out let's see what he can do. The more selection headaches Klopp has the better for our squad.

Don’t believe the media hype on Trent not defending well .
Neville’s agenda on Nunez and Trent is laughable can see why he’s a failed manager.

Completely agree. Awful defensively. World class going forward on the ball.

People didn’t and some probably still don’t understand that Trent was working to a system to get the best out of his ability and that has worked mainly to the teams advantage.
If he was to concentrate more so on his defensive duties then yes he would be a better defender. but we would lose so many other attributes.

Those claiming Trent is "Awful" at defending. Kyle Walker is suggested to be one of, if not the top defensive RB in the league. Trent outscores him in recoveries, tackles one and success rate.

Yes he is prone to an error, like us all. But get off the narrative and give your heads a wobble.

ArAy1969, I stopped caring about the whole "Trent can't defend" rubbish a while ago. Anyone still saying that as a kind of dig has nothing more to support that point hence, they are scraping the bottom of the barrel. If Gary Lineker after the FA Cup game is having to say that the media seem to go after Trent whenever a winger runs by him (clearly, that has never happened b4 till Trent showed up), that should just tell you that this wretched bubble has burst and the narrative is essentially dead, IMO.

On another note:

"My comment is more to many of the others. Some of whom only mock and taunt, and then slide back into the shadows when things are calm. "

This!

Anyone that listens to Neville needs to get their brain checked, he claims nunez is bad, yet he's scored more goals than his beloved hoiljand has scored ONE in the PL and cost more than Nunez, but its poor service holding him back, yet Nunez is just crap apparently.

Trent is the best RB in the world and best PL has ever seen at age 25. Enough said.

{Ed002's Note - So you have been listening to him then!!}

@WDW3, don't be emotional, don't be impatient. Let the stats speak for itself.

Let stats without TAA convince you that "there are a considerable number of contributors don’t rate his defending" convince you and your TAA supporters TAA is just a above average Midfielder but a bad defender.

I’m one of those that didn’t rate his defending previously, not so much about defensive ability but defensive awareness. He has since improved on it significantly.

He’s not an elite defender but good enough and he brings so much more offensively, which is what we need more anyway given how many teams park buses against us.

As to Gary Neville’s agenda against TAA, no kid grows up wanting to play at fullback as a GN, but I’m sure many will want to grow up and play as fullback as a TAA. Think he’s jealous maybe.

For all the criticism levelled against him, you have to acknowledge one thing - every single rb in the league is compared to him, anytime the England squad is announced or a rb for another team is having a good season the media always post the question 'is he better than TAA? ' - that for me shows he is the best rb in the league, and it's the media and pundits alike who criticise him that acknowledge this status as they compare every other rb to him, not to Trippier, not to Walker but to him.

Interestingly for all those who do believe Walker is better, (not on this page obviously lol) the stats show otherwise. Offensively TAA is much better, yet is also better in tackles won, recoveries made, interceptions etc as well, all those 'defensive' attributes that he is criticised for and Walker is praised for.

How many right backs get their own montage of every time a winger went past them at the end of each game? None, other than Trent. No agenda though obviously.

What makes you laugh is when Lineker and chums did it on the BBC Trent had just hyperextended his knee and was struggling with an injury!

If he only gets beaten when he’s injured then that’s not too bad at all.

Haters gone hate. Its what they do, let them. Its the way of the world to let you know you’re on the right path.
Trent is an exceptionally gifted footballer, end of story.

Trent was made a bit of a scapegoat by many for his defensive work last season while the whole team were frankly awful, even at the beginning of this season his confidence was shot that was clear as day, however now the defence is doing well the midfield is strong and Trent’s now playing with his chest puffed out and ultra high in confidence which is reflective of his offensive and defensive play this season, not many players in the world are currently playing to his standard, and the hybrid role looks to be nailed now, so much so I vary rarely see anybody moaning about it anymore.

Trent is a rare talent we are lucky to have and, whilst we may be able to cope and flourish in his absence, we are a better team with him in it. Add to that his elite, always wanting to win mentality, and he’s the sort of player any manager in the world would take.

"How many right backs get their own montage of every time a winger went past them at the end of each game? None, other than Trent. No agenda though obviously. "

Like you, I don't recall seeing any montage or special breakdowns on BT, BBC or Sky when Trippier was being worn like a dress by Son for 2 goals at Spurs. Or when his mistakes directly led to 2 goals at Everton.

Didn't see such things when Walker was getting cooked by any random winger or baller like Mitoma (who Trent pocketed, btw) .

Same goes for the defensive guru in Reece james when he got cooked by the mighty Anthony Gordon and got sent of cos his head was spinning all game.

The media do this cos it gets clicks and reactions cos really, who gives a hoot if James, Walker or Tippier get cooked? That would be nobody cos their names doesn't sell. Trent's name is a money-maker hence, the agendas.

Sorry ArAy (and all) - this wan’t meant as a stand-alone post - it was a reply to a thread from about 36 hours ago. I was continuing the general tone of that particular thread. I’m having intermittent issues with the ‘lag’ between my posting and the posts appearing on the board.

What appears like me being smart was actually a continuation of the tone on the particular thread.
