Well ed025 you don't know it just goes to show how much of not a red card it was for the FA to admit the ref and VAR got it wrong. Lol ?.

{Ed025's Note - yeah grino I was totally wrong. I thought if it was rescinded it would open too many doors mate. If a similar challenge is a couple of inches higher will that get thrown out as well? I did say that it was not in Macca,s nature to do that deliberately but I must admit I was surprised by the outcome.
It doer beggar the question though why the VAR never got involved if it was an obvious error? Otherwise what are they there for?..

Not having a go Ed025, but almost every pundit and ex ref said it was not a red. My only fear was that the panel wouldn't go against 2 officials.

{Ed025's Note - i thought it was a close one EN but like you i thought they would not climb down mate..

22 Aug 2023 19:28:16
Great question Ed. WTF are they there for?!

{Ed025's Note - i really dont know Macko?, they are stealing a living if you ask me mate..

22 Aug 2023 19:37:47
Tyrone mings gauged holes in Gakpos chest 2 months ago and it wasn’t a red. The ref on Saturday was some inexperienced nobody probably reffing one of his first 10 prem games and he had a shocker our pen was very dubious and it was clearly never a red card. He should probably miss a week like the guy from the Man Utd Wolves game.

Why does everything after to be clear and obvious, just get the bloody decisions right.

22 Aug 2023 19:44:35
Very soft pen in my opinion. I was slating City and Arsenal for offences like that dive last season so have to acknowledge it was exaggerated big time.

22 Aug 2023 19:48:25
How did Liverpool get that penalty but CP didn’t get one yesterday?

7.) 22 Aug 2023
22 Aug 2023 19:52:33
How many costly clear and obvious errors do you reckon everyone else can make in their line of work before they get sacked. I think I’d be swiftly out of the door by the 3rd one. Max.

{Ed025's Note - the standard is very poor thomas and has been for a long time mate, using VAR as a crutch does not help either..

8.) 22 Aug 2023
22 Aug 2023 19:55:17
Ed025 had that red card impacted the outcome of the game, do you think they would’ve admitted the mistake?

In my opinion, not… that would’ve caused some backlash.

{Ed025's Note - i asked the same question earlier Waqas, i know it never but it could have cost valuable points mate..

9.) 22 Aug 2023
22 Aug 2023 20:01:40
Yis haven't figured out who the VAR official was yet? All the explanation as to why VAR didn't intervene you need is there.

10.) 22 Aug 2023
22 Aug 2023 20:16:08
They should have a celebrity panel like X Factor or Masked Singer to judge Var and I bet Les Dennis, Rita Ora and Chris Akabusi would do a better job!

11.) 22 Aug 2023
22 Aug 2023 20:32:30
Got to agree with ed25 what is the var officials there for, maybe the fa are finally realising that the officials are being found out as incompetent so will
Maybe lead to a change, oh sorry I was dreaming it’s just there all corrupt and couldn’t worm their way out this time.

{Ed025's Note - hard to argue with that KTK..

22 Aug 2023 20:34:02
Nah, I disagree on the Szobo pen. There was clear contact on him by the defender and according to the expert opinion of a certain Alan Shearer, "If there is contact, the player has a right to go down". Im only using this logic cos he said it when Harry Kane flopped to the ground and won a penalty against us in 17/ 18 at Anfield. That should be applied to every player then, correct?

Also in the words of the fooball genius named Sam Alardyce when Calvert-Lewin flopped to the ground after Lovren breathed on him at Anfield in 17/ 18, "A sof penalty does not exist". Again, Im only using Shearer's and Alardyce's logic.

As for the Macca red card, everyone knew it wasn't. I am just surprised they overturned it cos I was weary of them getting all arrogant and not doing the right thing. Colour me surprised.

Ed25 still wearing his royal blue tinted aviator sunglasses ??

{Ed025's Note - there is only me and Tom Cruise who can pull that off Juicer..

To further add a fly in the VAR pot I wonder how klopp feels about the FA backing the appeal when the VAR was his old friend Paul Tierney if I'm not mistaken.
It's one thing for the ref to miss it but surely it supports the case that Tierney clearly has an issue with klopp to have no doubt seen that challenge from dozens of angles and yet he decided not to even ask the ref to take a look, as somebody had already suggested the ref may be inexperienced at this level or was just caught up in the atmosphere or whatever but Tierney is experienced asks was in the office. Doesn't really have an excuse worth hearing so surely he needs to be stood down for the next weeks games if not all of lfc games going forward.

Ed025, I am not a frequent commenter, but I frequently appreciate how little of your ego is invested, you are almost unrecognizable on an internet message board for your maturity.

{Ed025's Note - thanks AP, im just an average joe mate...a nice one i think, who is semi retired so have time on my hands to edit these pages, im a mad sports fan and love to chew the fat with the guys who are mainly good people..

22 Aug 2023 21:38:51
Ed025 I will all ways call it as fair as possible it was never a red card but it was never a pen but the contract makes it not clear and obvious but then the spurs pen against them last weekend on son VAR should never have given that. This clear and obviously is just a get out clause for some very bad officials that under Stand the rules but have no in of the game. I have been saying for years that players from lower leagues after they finish should be fast tracked into referees there is not enough jobs in football for them and most have no jobs to go to and they understand the game and in the lower leagues they do not earn enough to set them up like the top division.

{Ed025's Note - you make a very good point grino, some of these refs seem to be a bit aloof to me mate and see themselves in a starring role on tv, it would be great if the FA took up your idea and trained these guys up because there is definitely a lack of officials who really understand the game especially from a players viewpoint..

17.) 22 Aug 2023
22 Aug 2023 21:55:46
genuinely but happily surprised by that. Didn't they would or should overturn it.

Regards VAR, for this one, at the end of the day he made contact with the defender. I can understand why this one wasn't seen as a clear and obvious error. Like the bournemouth manager said, it was kind of like an orange card.

18.) 22 Aug 2023
22 Aug 2023 22:32:32
The problem is VAR only comes in when it's an 'error' this challenge is prime example of when what I have wanted for a long time would work perfectly.

Ref blows whistle for foul as he's walking over just say to the VAR I think that was high and endangered opponent and am thinking red can you confirm I have seen this correctly.

The VAR respond and go well it was slightly high but he does try to pull away from it and there was no forceful nature we would recommend yellow.

Then the ref has the option to go okay and give yellow or at this point go have a look .

The key is that all this is before the decision is made and therefore there is no feeling of if VAR is involved it is because the ref got something wrong instead it is now a tool to help on decision making.

I also don't see how this would take any longer than the check after the decision is made.

22 Aug 2023 22:21:57
Ed025 Anybody that has the playedgame at most levels above school boy know when someone is going into hurt some. But the refs are starting there way early on and I wonder how many off them have a chip on there shoulders because they loved the game but most of the time couldn’t play the game. These rules for this season with the yellow cards has gone to far, certain players and managers, Klopp is one of them do need pulling in a bit but I think it’s gone far to far if you can’t question any of there defensive like you said they are not the stars of the show they are there just to keep the game rolling.

{Ed025's Note - but its ruining the game as a spectacle grino, the players, managers and especially the supporters want transparency and professionalism mate, we are not getting that at the moment..

20.) 22 Aug 2023
22 Aug 2023 22:25:21
I'm very much surprised by this. And very pleasantly too. I thought we would see the standard "sweep under the carpet" exercise. I guess the collective that decided this, suddenly "grew a pair" (as per common parlance ?) .

And now I'm thinking of those retired refs on TV, on the day of the match, who all went along with the red card. Who do we approach for cancellation of their TV contracts? ?.

21.) 22 Aug 2023
22 Aug 2023 22:46:20
For me, the real problem with VAR is that it will diminish the skills of the match officials because it ultimately takes away their need to be responsible for decisions.

If you go back a few years, referees and touch judges, linesmen, linespeople, had sole responsibility for making decisions. God knows they didn’t always get it right but it would be fair to say that in most seasons the dodgy decisions that went against us were balanced out by the equally dodgy decisions that were given our way. It used to be the subject of debate for the working week and in the pub until the next game came around. The arguing with mates who supported your team and particularly with those who supported other teams was a big part of what the game was about back in the day.

Now we have the officials on the field, officials off the field, VAR, social media giving access to ultra slow motion / freeze frame technology for every body to review over and over and over again. And, of course, we now have, Football as a business, football as a toy, football as a state manipulated pathway into foreign markets that previously couldn’t be exploited etc, etc.

I know we have let the genie out of the bottle, actually we’ve let several genies out of the bottle and we can’t possibly go back. But, Jeez, it would be great to be at the Newcastle match at the weekend without off-field officials, without VAR, without large screens, without social media, without TV cameras, without 20 minutes of added on time and with the game played as a contact sport.

One last thing, anyone who thought Macca had his foot up obviously never saw the game in Tommy Smith’s day.

Anyway, rant over, sorry.

Waqqa they admitted mistakes w the Everton non pen at home to city two seasons ago and another one i can't quite remember the situation (wasn't us) at the end of last season. So who knows maybe. As for the pen very soft but seen much worse given and that's the game now.

I’ve only skimmed through the above replies so apologies if someone has already mentioned it, but I’m pretty sure one of the other Var officials was the lino with the greek name ??‍♂️ Who threw his elbow up at Robbo last season….

25.) 23 Aug 2023
23 Aug 2023 07:41:08
Why don’t they make it compulsory for the ref to look at the screen in all red card decisions? We don’t want to slow the game down too much I know but these are decision that will normally have a big impact on the outcome.

If the ref gets the red card out he has to immediately look at the screen to ensure he saw what he thinks he saw.

Easy.

28.) 23 Aug 2023

Thing that gets me though is often the time it takes VAR to actually reach a decision, i mean 5 minutes plus has happened so often for decisions - players do not know what to be at

So, by their own rules, VAR will only get involved if something is 'clear and obvious' right? If VAR then gets involved and takes longer than 30 secs to come to a decision then the conditions are hardly clear or obvious then are they?

I mean, for an offside - he's a yard off - that's clear and obvious so no bother, play was too quick for the linesman so yeah, VAR gets involved and decision made - what 10 secs max?

A penalty is given - VAR official can see there was no contact and they player dived - Ref advised to view it, sees that and books the diver and scrubs the penalty - what 30secs to a minute perhaps?

Handball penalty given by linesman - VAR shows it did not hit his hand so refere the ref to look at it and penalty not given - 30 secs to a minute for that call. Weirdly this is what should have happened in the Wolves/ City match last season, but somehow City still got the penalty?

The reverse of the above is true as well. Opposition players claim a penalty for a handball, ref missed it so not given. VAR advises him to go and look, ref sees he moved his hand toward the ball, deliberate action so penalty given - again, what a minute max? And what should have happened in the Everton match last season against City

Look, the above are only a few examples but just designed to show how quickly and easily VAR should function if used as designed. Clear and Obvious errors are, well, bloody clear and obvious to spot so really should not take minutes upon minutes of reviewing replay after replay, still after still - they should be obvious - hence what, 30 secs to a minute to decide and job done.

AI should already be being used to learn from the thousands of incidents which happen every weekend.

Within a few months it would be far superior to the current crop.
It would be neutral, it would be consistent and you could get clear explanations without abusing any humans.

It seems like a no brainer which means the football authorities won’t implement it.

30.) 23 Aug 2023
23 Aug 2023 19:31:29
I'm sorry Oli, I don't care what Shearer or Allardyce says, That was not a penalty against Bournemouth.

I'm glad we got it, but you get given a penalty for a 'foul' in the penalty area, not for being touched in the penalty area.

It irritates me when ex pros and commentators first opinion is 'well, there was contact'. That doesn't answer the question. The question is, 'was there a foul? '

That challenge on the far corner of the box was dubious at best and did not deserve a free shot at goal from the penalty spot.
