Hope this isn't true as Matip has had his day and we need an upgrade, with konate out injured a lot he's not good enough to fill that gap and surely we need to strengthen that area. Personally I'd rather keep phillps as 3rd/ 4th choice cb.

If we are going to persist with this 3 at the back then I’d much rather have Gomez as the backup to Matip who I don’t think has it in him to do it effectively.

Based on Transfermarkt, Joel’s contract runs out in 24, VVD’s in 25, Ibou’s in 26 and Joe’s in 27 (which surprised me as it seems like a long contract for someone whose not a regular starter) .

It would make sense to me to sell this summer if we got Sa decent offer otherwise he’ll probably be released for nothing next summer. Same applies to Virgil for the following year - sell next summer or let him leave at the end of his contract. Irrespective of Matip staying or leaving I think we need another defender and it would also be a positive step to see Chambers and Quansah and perhaps Beck promoted to the first team squad for next season.

Matip is ace. When he plays he never let's us down, and takes no time getting up to speed. Seems like an odd pack mentality on here sometimes.

Matip over gomez for meas a cb. Gomez is good back up for rb though so could be either for me. That said we definitely need another 1 in to challenge both of them or to replace vvd if he has another season like his last.

Weird the disrespect Gomez gets on here. He's much better than Matip, faster and stronger, the obvious slight against Gomez is his ability to read a game. We won the title with Gomez and Van Dijk, and that season Gomez was arguably one of the best CB's in the league. Cover RB and CB. You can tell who grabs their opinions off of Fifa on here and not from the Kop on a saturday.
