'Lutsharel Geertruida-Liverpool deal considered OFF by Sunderland after talks not advancing today. '
Well, I guess it wouldn't be a transfer window without a failed transfer and a degree of disappointment.

I refer you to:

inb4 it's really complicated and expensive for Leipzig to cancel the loan to Sunderland and they end up demanding an extra £5m to make it happen in the last 5 minutes of the transfer window and the move collapses.

We'll find out we hardballed on £5k.

If only the transfer window was 30 days long or so, so we had time to work out these deals.

Not surprised. We rarely get last minute deals over the line. We takes months to complete deals.
Pity. He looked a perfect addition.

How inept can we be? The Guhie cockup in the summer surly must have given a lesson in how not to deal with a potential move!
I know this is not the same, and given how complex it is, due diligence seems to be left so late in the day. It's clear we need help, any target should have been ID at the beginning of the window at the latest. It's comes out with a day left that we are targeting a player already on- lone and a player still recovering from an injury. We are acting like desperate amateurs it's embarrassing.

We've had enough time to get a deal done, after a failed attempt in the summer granted not all our doing we should have had someone in 1st January.

Ed's any idea on why we one waited until the end of the window and secondly why we are going for players who are already on loan or injured? I backed Hughes in the summer but what the heck are we playing at. I would not mind if we just played Ramsey but we desperately need CB cover.
{Ed001's Note - I have no idea other than incompetence.}

Why on earth would we leave it until the last hours of a transfer window to attempt such a complicated deal?
Smells like a Richard Hughes classic.

This was just an emergency loan because of the Frimpong injury the other day, so wasn't being looked at for earlier in the window.
Any long term business seems to be for the summer.

Getting Dom to re-sign whilst he's playing RB is not going to be easy.
Gomez needs replacing, why not do that now? A utility defender, but one who stays fit is what we need. We can't depend on Jo, Connor or Frimpong by the looks of things.

Could be Sunderland being super awkward. The player was obviously buzzing with the idea of the move. They could of given the "green light" but with unrealistic expectations. We really don't know half of it. I know its frustrating especially when us man children go rushing to Youtube and start altering our imaginary line ups lol.

That is what I was afraid of Ed. I hope Hughes either sorts it out or is moved on in the summer. We need some cover.

It was clear at the end of the summer we wanted to sign a defender who could play more than one position with the pursuit of Guehi. To get as far as we did with that and knowing that we already lost Leoni, and with all of Gomez, Bradley and Frimpong having injury issues in the first part of the season, and with Konate and Gomez's poor injury history, as well as Konate's form, not following up on the Guehi interest on the grounds of "let's wait and see" is somewhere between extreme hubris assuming he'd wait and utter incompetence in knowing we had issues and chose to spunk the season away.
We're an iniury away to either Van Dijk or Konate away from catastrophe. F*** around and find out appears to be our new motto.

Regardless id whether its Sunderland messing around or not. the fact it was obvious we needed defensive reinforcement months ago to end up on the eve of the transfer window shutting missing a target goes to show that there are other people aside Arne who's jobs should be on the line.
Should have been lining a deal up before the window opened.

I think people are being harsh l.
1. Frimpong only got injured mid week so we weren't in the market *desperately* needing a fullback before that point (ie during the rest of the window)
2. Ornstein or Romano (can't remember which) reported that talks began several days ago with him, so we didn't wait until the last days, even though that's when the news broke.
Getting players in that are good enough, improve us, are available, want to come and are affordable in January is difficult. There's no doubt about that.
Hughes and team haven't been great but I don't blame them much for this one.

Hughes and Edwards out! The incompetence is inexcusable.
I half suspect It's not even incompetence, at this stage it feels like they're just looking for excuses.

Navy, it's not about Frimpong "just" getting an injury midweek mate. Him and Connor have been a liability all season (and last season too for Connor).
Gomez has always been a liability, apart from that one season he was world class next to VVD.
Konate is fairly injury prone too. Leoni we don't have. Ramsey or any academy players aren't trusted.
We were already desperate before the Frimpong injury. Look at any of the clubs above us, they all have more cover in defence than we do currently. Look at Arsenal how they'd been able to still compete well (relatively) on all fronts because they have so many defenders who can play more than one position.
Like said above by VV, we lose one of VVD or Konate and we're pretty much done. we should've never been in this position. Hughes/ Edwards or whoever is responsible, has/ have shown to be extremely incompetent and should be the first one (s) to go in the summer!

At least we don't have to play until next weekend now.
Give the players a solid week of training and recovery.
Arsenal, City, Chelsea, Newcastle all in action midweek.
