Hi ed001, if you don't mind please what was your opinion of Steve Staunton as a player? He seems to of been highly regarded by quite a few people, but he's a player that I could never really take to.

{Ed001's Note - first time at Liverpool he was excellent, but the game changed while he was at Villa and his lack of pace made him a liability at left-back. He was not good enough defensively to be a centre-back on a permanent basis and so he struggled. He was a very good old school left-back, with a good passing range. He was not good at getting forward and attacking enough, as he was not mobile enough for that. Of his time I would say.}

Cheers ed, thanks for that. Even when playing for Ireland I just didn't rate him. Denis irwin on the other hand, he was one player I would done anything to see play for us.

{Ed001's Note - brilliant player Irwin. One of the best full-backs of all time imo.}

Denis Irwin was awesome player in same bracket as Phillip Lahm.

Top bloke though, Steve Staunton. I'd occasionally see him in the Hare and Hounds and he was good with us giddy 18 year olds when we'd had a few perrys.

Cracker of a player Irwin was, left or right side he was equally as good. Brilliant defensively and offensively. He would thrive in today's game.

Never thought irwin played as well for ireland as he did man utd.

For me Staunton was good, Irwin great but Steve Nicol! Brilliant all rounder but I think full back was his best position and he overshadowed both.

{Ed001's Note - Nicol was special, equally as good in midfield too. There are very few players that have ever been as good as him in so many positions, if any.}

Irwin was class I admit. For liverpool my all time 3 left backs would be Riise, Kennedy and stig. Not sure in which order I'd put those but I loved them all the same. Rob Jones or Steve finnan as right back.
