Can any of the Eds explain to me why a team uses an inverted full-back?
It seemed to me like we used to push our full backs high up the pitch which allowed the front three to be closer together and interchange better. It also meant that when we lost the ball we had more bodies up top to win the ball back quickly.
Obviously if the press was beaten we could be exposed, however it feels like we are more exposed with this inverted full back situation but I'm looking to understand the benefit of the system.

{Ed001's Note - the idea is to get an extra body in midfield.}

Thanks Ed1. If that’s it then the benefits of the old tactics surely outweigh the inverted full back idea. Especially now we’ve got more mobility back in centre mid again.

{Ed001's Note - I think the old tactics are better, but I am not making the decision.}

If Salah were to be sold for 150 million who if available would you replace him with?

For me, it's an attacking strategy to smother the opposition. I think we also use it to get more out of TAA's distribution.
I like the idea of us taking the game to whoever we play but it does leave us wide open at the back with our defence and lack of bite in midfield. I think we miss Mane's defensive work, too.

Rabh, I'm guessing a case could be made for playing Szoboszlai in salah's position, of course we'd be unlikely to get the same amount of goals.

If someone offered that kind of money for a 31 year old player then I think we'd have to consider it, especially as we need at least one absolute top class CB and maybe even two in the next couple of years.

And no, I'm not saying we should sell Salah but from a pure financial angle, it does make sense because the number being quoted is ridiculous.

I think we have to look at the question is Salah still in his prime?

If the answer is yes then how can we expect to challenge as a club if we’re selling arguably our best players in their prime.

The numbers mentioned for him are astronomical and far outweighs the money Liverpool would be getting so it’s a case of what Salah’s thoughts are.

We seemed to be happy and supported Hendo making the decision for finances so it would be hard to not give Salah the same blessing.

I really hope the club can negotiate with Salah though that he gives us at least one more season. But that season would come at a huge financial loss to him and there’s not always guarantees that Saudi will be in the same place next season and be back for him.

Also with agents working on commission then surely we know what his advice would be, and I bet it’s not let’s wait 12 months and see what the options are then.

Rabh, for me I’d be happy with Diaz on the right and gakpo on the left for now rather than panic buying.

Why are we hell bent on selling someone who would once again score 20 goals a season? this group is so weird at times.

If he did go and a big if. I would like us to take a punt on Florian Wirtz of Leverkusen. We do have the attackers that would give Wirtz time to bed in.

{Ed002's Note - Wirtz won't be joining Liverpool.}

Klopps presser today when asked if a bid had been made for Salah he answered

Habibi, why the hyperbole, who exactly is 'hellbent' on selling Salah. All I see in this thread is people being realistic?

For me if salah goes the money needs spending elsewhere mostly centre half possibly 2 and maybe another 6 .

Something similar in a way years ago the libero I think would work better. Would mean pushing full backs higher up and gives the 3rd man in a back 3 and then gives you a CMD when attacking.

Diaz is rubbish on the right.

Long Term View if I may, you can look at it the way sometimes, a team plays a back 3. Sometimes, a team can play a back 3 to allow the "sweeper" to step out into midfield and be an extra body in there like the way Matip would do for us had we employed such a system hence, create the overload.

The midfield is where games are mostly won and lost so the more overloads and and outnumbering of the opponent in this area you can do, the better chance you have of controlling the game and have a chance to win. Just my take.

Inverted FB thing is high risk high reward, just like the high line. But in this case I think the risk is far too high.

Who says Salah wants to go? And negotiate what with him? He's got a contract with us, played in all our games so far and done well.
I've not seen or heard anything that makes me think he wants to leave.
If the Saudis want him that badly and he wants to go, they should have made an offer earlier in the window.

{Ed002's Note - He obviously knew what his agent was up to.}

Does that mean Salah wants to go or that he was just seeing what was on the table and from whom?

Aside from the obvious defensive problems, teams already play with inverted wingers so if you invert the full backs too there is no out ball and you either nullify your wide attackers or have to force everything through the middle of the pitch. Most teams would be better off without it from what I can see.
