I believe Matip is to be offered a new 2 year deal from LFC, Thiago discussions are underway but it seems like he will leave when his contract expires.

If true, maybe it's just protecting Matip's value. Decent squad player, very experienced and quality on the ball. If the replacement we want isn't available in the summer, we can always wait like we did for Bellingham. Lol!

Matip and Thiago may have their injury issues but, they can still offer something as squad players, experience for 1 and aparently they're both very liked within the squad, which is also very good for new players coming into the squad. We, as fans only ever think of playing time but, if the coaching staff and club think they deserve a new contract for whatever reason, I'm with them.

Thiago's football brain alone is worth a contract I believe, having him around young players is invaluable, both on and off the pitch.

I haven’t got a problem with matip stays as long as the club are still looking on pursuing another centre half and matip becomes the 4/ 5th choice as we know it . I’m sure with diminished minutes maybe he will be offered similar if not less money either way I’m not really arsed . He’s a good guy to have around the club has been a great addition to this team and fellow players . But if it stops us progressing as a team and a squad he has to go .

We should all know how Klopp rolls by now.
It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest to see Matip's contract get extended.
He's been a valuable squad member during Klopp's time.
I agree with dhfc above though, we do need one or two reinforcements in central defence still.

What’s the problem with giving Matip a new contract? He’s done well for us and is decent backup. Some fans just look for reasons to moan I’m sure of it.

My only concern with giving Matip a new contract is that we definitely need a new left footed CB as cover/ long term replacement for Virgil. You would imagine that we keep Big Virgil, Konate, Gomez (homegrown) and Quansah, who in my opinion has done really well and should be kept as a backup option. With Maptip and a new CB that’s 6 and maybe one too many.

Virg is 33 on July 9th next year - the beginning of the transfer window. He is a year younger than Hendo, and, again like Hendo, his best days are behind him.

Matip seems to be an integral part of the team spirit and family vibe at the club. Perhaps if he only has to play 20/ 30 games in a season and is willing to take wages aligned with his squad status this makes sense. Anyway, I've learn by now that Klopp and co know better than this old blert.
