Cracking article Ed. Much appreciated. I always remember hearing stories when I was a kid of the insane rivalries between them, but because I’m ancient, it was all word of mouth between mates. You have just inspired me to head down a rabbit hole about South American football to see if some of those stories are correct.

{Ed001's Note - was this back in the 1940s when you were growing up?}

Back in the 40’s was my heyday Ed. When all we had was coal for dinner.

{Ed001's Note - it was just a tree then when you were eating it.}

I was lucky enough to see river vs independiente back in 2003 I think. D’allesandro was playing if I remember correctly. The river fans were nuts. Despite winning, on the train back into the centre of Buenos Aires the fans destroyed the train, ripping up seats and pulling lights down. When we got off, my two mates and I were quickly escorted off to a separate gate by security. At first I thought we were singled out for being, well, not local. But the guy just said, ‘not safe’ and ushered us out of a different exit. Good job they didn’t lose. It was also quite scary to feel the stand moving when the fans were jumping!

This game is 100% on my bucket list, alongside the Casablanca derby.

I was lucky to watch quite a few Bova v River matches in the early 2000's when River had Higuain, Ariel Ortega and a certain Lucas Radamel Falcao and those games were absolutely insane. For me, one of if not THE biggest rivalry in world football, IMO.
