Ed 01, I started supporting Liverpool at the end of the Evans era as a 7 year old so, sadly never saw us win the league, just wanted to ask what made us so successful for such a long period. Were we big spenders or were we lucky enough to get the best managers, were the likes of Rush, Barns, Keegan Berdsley developed at Liverpool or was it a case of we got them due to our success. Also what was the reason in your opinion that we couldn't sustain those hights and move with the times? I can't really Google things like this or I would.

{Ed001's Note - good management, we had great managers who had the right staff working with them to find the right players, not necessarily the best ones. We had a great scout in Geoff Twentyman, who identified the right kinds of players to bring to the club, such as Rush. We had fantastic coaches who would develop them into the right players for us, such as Moran, Paisley and Shankly. They were ably supported by a chairman who loved the club and was there simply to do what was right.

The main reason we fell away was one man. David Moores. He was a leech who siphoned off money into his own pocket, rather than invested into the club he claimed to love. When there was a chance to build a new stadium, he rejected the opportunity due to it requiring him to put his money into the project. Even when he sold up, for £86m, he was still getting free first class travel and accommodation to go to games paid for by the club.}

I'd love to know where we would be now if he invested into a new stadium

{Ed002's Note - Ground sharing with Tranmere.}

Ed, would you say we also failed to capitalise on our success from a financial point of view? When United succeeded in the 90's apparently they milked it commercially were as we didn't and suffered slightly? Is that true?
Also, I feel Evans was only one player short of winning the title.

{Ed001's Note - yes, but that was again down to Moores reluctance to invest.}

I agree with what you said Ed001, but we also had the luxury of being able to let them play in the reserves for a year and let them get used to our style of play.

Plus our reserves used to that good back then, that they would have finished second to us.

The only thing that hasn't changed in football since the 80's are the goal posts. Everything else has changed.
It's not the same game as it was so comparing is futile.
Some clubs anticipated the changes and to a degree helped shape them. We didn't, we got left behind and we didn't realise it until it was too late.

Just my observations

was watching Chasing Classic Cars on Discovery Turbo and guess who I spotted sat in the front row at pebble beach auction a certain David Moores. No doubt spending his millions he made selling the club to hicks and Gillette.
Is it a stupid question to say we wouldn't of been in this mess (financially and owners transfer policy) if Moores had sold to Dubai Investments?

{Ed002's Note - Liverpool would have been dragged down by them when they went bust.}

Thanks for your reply Ed, wish I was alive to see us dominate Europe. Must be hard to see us languishing between 4th and 7th when you're used to winning titles and European Cups.

If RON KEAGUE is around,we have been left behind big-time,we were talking about a new ground for about 15 years but that's all it was,while Rome burnt everybody else added to there's and before you no it here we are getting a make-over instead of being at the fore-front for a new ground,be it shared or our own. also while I'm at it until we stop being a selling club we'll never get back to were we were.surround the class players with class players,it's not rocket science.

Ed with regards to our continued success back when.

You mention good coaches and scouting.

My question is were the players we were signings unknowns or were we the preferred choice for players who had numerous bids from other clubs due ti out success at that time, like when rvp went with united over city, knowing there was more chance of a title there (might be money) but as I said we're we plucking them out of no were or just the best club that went for them?

We're we paying anything better in wages etc

I suppose the likes of shanks and paisley would of been big pulls aswel as the top players that were already there.

Think I'm answering my own question here ed but look forward to to yr response :)

{Ed001's Note - it was a mix, it was the players that Geoff Twentyman recommended for the positions we needed. Some were unknowns that had little in the way of other offers, but others would choose us. Initially Shanks would sell the club to them, in his own inimitable way, later the club would sell itself as it was the top club people wanted to play for us. Though the club did do a lot of groundwork, especially through Twentyman, who would get to know every player he thought might be possible, get to know their family etc, to be sure they were the right type of person as well as player. So it was much easier for us to bring in the chosen ones.}
