Conflict of interests?
Impartiality?
Integrity?

Just fusty old words like sixpence and codpiece to these refs.

Integrity. The still they chose to pause and show at the screen when the referee was walking towards the monitor tells it all.

If that shot had been on screen when the ref walked over then no way would that have been a red card. Having said that, the actual outcome of the tackle was poor regardless of intent, so while I don’t agree with it, I’m not going to argue over it either…. it was a 50/ 50 call red or yellow in my view.

The problem I have is more how the VAR was implemented to overrule a 50/ 50 call the ref had already made, and also how the VAR room chose to share the info (ie. The worst possible screenshot rather than the above mitigating shot) and that needs to be addressed. There needs to be a standard protocol to avoid rather than create bias ie. Ref should be required to watch it real time from all angles first, and then they have the option to request slow-mo and stills as they need thereafter.

This also sets a precedent that more red cards should be decided based on outcomes rather than intent. Expect many more this season if they apply this standard.

I've changed my mind on the Jones challenge. I now think it was a red.
I believe that where Jones's foot ends up is the vital factor. I sympathise with him because he didn't mean it and he was overstretching but ended up going over the ball. He wasn't in control and it was a very dangerous challenge.

Exactly, SGRed. Gusto at Chelsea was sent off for the exact same tackle which I felt was also wrong cos it was a 50/ 50 play and both players went for the ball. So your point in your first paragraph, is the insidious part of this red card issue. The VAR deliberately shows the very end of the play where Jones actually catches Bissouma in a freeze in order to influence the ref's decision from the off.

Also notice that all those watching on TV saw the whole sequence of events from start to finish on the slow motion replay from all diff. angles BUT the VAR only shows the very end of the play, and not the whole clip like we did. This part of the controversy is what I find very suspicious. This is the VAR influencing the ref on the pitch to make a specific decision, which I find horrifying.

I suspect VAR showed that freeze frame because of the psychology of those in the VaR room, not through any malice or corruption.

They know by sending the ref to the screen they are in fact overruling him due to the ‘clear and obvious error’ threshold, and so they are of course going to be trying to justify their decision by showing him the worst possible view first. But that just leads to concerns about a lack of objectivity.

It’s why I keep thinking VAR implementation is wrong and delivering inconsistent outcomes - it’s putting one ref against another most of the time (as Mike Dean pointed out too), and so of course human nature comes into it as to when and how that happens.

They need to refocus on simplifying when and how to use technology to help the onfield referee make better decisions, as it feels like a case of too many cooks at the moment.

SGRed, this is exactly my point. The implementation is the problem. In other leagues, the on field ref has the full authority to overrule the VAR cos the VAR is just a tool, not the be all and end all. But in England, VAR is implemented to cover the ref's arses and protect them from being challenged on their blatant incompetence and don't forget, the worse they get, the bigger protection they are provided by the PGMOL. This dumpster fire of their own making and Im happy the club is not letting this go.

{Ed025's Note - “the VAR is just a tool”. Never a truer word said oli ..?

You’re mad Rigbsy, you can see a still a post or two above which has Jones/ Bissumas feet parallel with each other. Same exact height. Slipping over the top of the ball isn’t the same thing.

Come on, Ed25. That is not what I meant. I meant the VAR system, as a whole. Good laugh tho, mate.

{Ed025's Note - sometimes it’s good to lighten the mood Oli..?
