So we are approaching the end of the group stages and it's turning into what I feared.

The world cup is the pinnacle of football in my opinion, or should be. It should be a celebration of the game and the best players showcasing their skills.

Instead, we have a tournament where the local 11 a side has more atmosphere, teams that are more interested in not losing then winning. And a bunch of managers (Southgate and martinez as examples) who would be out thought in the championship.

I have no idea how the world cup has fallen so spectacularly, there is wall to wall football that I can have on whilst I work. And all I can think is what an absolute waste of a tournament.

Italia 90 was the last decent one.

Football at highest level is no different. Just look how Real Madrid played against US in the champions league final or how we and spurs both played in 2019 final.

I think there's been some great games and boring games also. No change from previous World Cups. Good to see my tip (Croatia) getting out of the group stages ?.

You are correct kopforever. Our 2 domestic finals were nothing to write home about either.

The problem is the World Cup hasn't been the pinnacle of football since the 90's, it is now the Champions League. 30 years ago the best international teams would have beaten the best club teams but now with globalization a team like Manchester City can have the best Belgian midfielder, the best 2 Portuguese defenders, the best Norwegian striker etc. 30 years ago the majority of club teams were made up of 9-10 domestic players and a couple of foreigners, now the best club sides are world all star teams.

I actually think this is one of the better world cups so far. Have no idea if this is objectively true, but I feel like there has been more goals, drama and upsets already.

Lots of shock results and stuff. Both Germany and Belgium are out in the group stage, but no team really looks like a world cup winner from the highlights and occasional match I've seen.

Who knows, maybe we'll have a Greece winning Euro 2004 moment and get a complete rank outsider go all the way. That would be nice.
