Really impressed again last night with the Reds, and what's most promising is that we are seeing signs of the team starting to play like they were at the end of last season. The tempo is starting to raise and there were instances last night when the interplay between the front 3 was so quick, and all that was missing was the final pass.
In very difficult conditions against a very decent team we showed great maturity and patience. The defence are working so well together they are so tight positionally which you never thought would be possible this time last year. Robertson's energy is phenomenal, Milners experience at right back is perfect for a stand in. and VDD is exceptional, and what a difference a decent Keeper makes.
We for the first time under Klopp have very good options from the bench, substitutions are often made which improves the performance of game, e. g Shaka against United.
I believe we are now seeing the real Jurgen Klopp team, we were complaining about the keeper, he has sorted it. Complained about the defence, he sorted it. Complained about a defensive midfielder and he sorted it. Last year we may have won this game 3 nil or lost 4.3, now we look much more workman like and compact, teams are not breaking through the middle at us like last year, when teams put pressure on us last year we tended to buckle, now we have learned to slow the game down and start to control teams at our tempo. We saw this last night, just before half time we were under the cosh however we came out second half and passed our way back into control.
Our biggest problem will be injuries, if we stay fit we will be there at the end.
Half term summary for Jurgen, good work keep it up. Well Done.

Hi Ed001 how good is Gomez getting. Under the tuition of VVD he is becoming a Rolls Royce defender. Although there are instances when he gets out of position he has the speed and the savvy to get out of the rubbish. twice yesterday he found himself on the wrong side and twice he realised and calmly took the player out before any danger, put his arms up to the Ref and got away with it. Chelsea's Ivanovic had done this for years with Chelsea with great success.
That is what I was Gini didn't do on Wednesday and we all know what happened next.

So your evidence for him being a good player is that he gets out of position and then performs fouls to get him out of the mistake?!

That sounds an awful lot like Moreno who I’m sure you would not say is a “Rolls Royce defender”.

2.) 12 Nov 2018 18:47:23
OP, Gomez still has a lot to learn and so does VVD. The chance Sessegnon had was a combination of VVD allowing Mitrovic to head the ball uncontested and Gomez astonishingly, fell asleep and let the ball go thru his legs. He also let Mitrovic bully him at times and let him overpower him when goal- kicks came his way. Also, VVD still has his laisser-faire attitude and Gomez can also lose concentration or get caught under diagonals. Don't get me wrong, Gomez is the real deal and so is VVD but let us not be blindd by how well they may be playing cos both have issues they need to iron out esp. Gomez who is still learning the game at the highest level.

3.) 12 Nov 2018 19:52:01
Guys Im not saying Gomez is anywhere near the finished article, what I am saying for a young 21 year old kid playing in one of the most difficult positions he is showing great promise. Most of the best Center backs in the world did not shine until their mid late 20s. Being bullied buy an experience journeyman like Mitrovic is nothing to be ashamed about for a young lad in his first season at CB, and for the majority of the game he had him in his pocket. Its all experience for the young lad. What is more important is his constant improvement, its easy to pick holes in the young mans game, but for me I would not swap him for any defender in the prem at the moment.
For the comment comparing Gomez to Moreno, wow, the point im making he is showing great maturity for a young lad, even learning the dark arts of defending, just watch Sergio Ramos, John Terry and the likes they all have it.

4.) 12 Nov 2018 20:37:42
Evered, I agree with you on Gomez overall and take this from a guy who rates him quite highly from jump and in spite of his mistakes cos to me, he is too talented to not develop him cos his up side is tremendous. I was only mentioning the parts of his game he need to improve upon.

Whether Mitrovic bullying him is nothing to be ashamed of, is a question of of opinion and I don't think Mitrovic is anything special cos Gomez has shut down strikers way better than him like Kane, Aubameyang etc.

All in all, Gomez is the real deal and I'd rather give him the time he needs to develop fully to minimize his mistakes and shortcomings instead of bigging him up every time he has a good game or a series of good games cos regardless of what we both think, he is still learning the game at this level.

5.) 12 Nov 2018 20:56:40
I’m not comparing him to Moreno, you’ve missed the point.
I’m saying that what you said (gets out of position and then has to make fouls) sounds like a description of Moreno.

He has the potential to be top class, but he has a lot to work on and saying he fouls people is not and never will be a good thing. He should be in the right position in the first place.

Hi Red Men, my take on Saturday now I've sat down and relaxed a bit. I'm an elder statesman, I know the game has changed from the 80s when I was playing, however the fundamentals are the same. When I was playing you always found out who the opposition main man was, he was usually the centre mid or one of the forwards, being a midfielder I always took it on myself to try find out whether he had bottle and then try to bring him down to my level, mainly by getting in a few sly digs in early just to see the response, sometimes they stood toe to toe but a lot of times they would go into their shell, result, a bit of intimidation went a long way.
Sergio Ramos is schooled in the darker arts of football, a very experienced player who is not the best gifted, however makes up for it in guile and a little naughtiness, from his comments before the game you could tell he was going to take it on himself to sort Salah out. I'm not saying he intentionally broke Salah's shoulder, but he as we would say "roughed him up a little^. He got the tackle in and then purposely tried to pull Salah down with as much force as possible.
As I said when I was playing this type of football was common place in the dark days, however we don't tend to see it nowadays, Ramos conned the ref and all watching, he knew what he was doing and got his reward.
My point is not that Ramos had done what he did, my issue is that nobody in the Liverpool side responded! As soon as Salah went off someone should have taken charge instead of feeling sorry for themselves. As soon as I saw the incident the old red rag came out and I though the next chance we have we should have piled through Ramos or another of Reals players.
Someone had to take responsibility and put in a few nasty tackles and got the Liverpool crowd on their feet. The whole stadium was in shock and someone should have woken them up. Ramos knew he got away with it and nobody responded. If that happened to Ronaldo, you can bet your bottom dollar Ramos would be straight through on of the Liverpool players.
We were too nice and have been for a while, what would Sourness had done! Not one hard tackle went in after Salah went off, nothing to get the crowd going, Modric and Kroos should have been targeted second half yet they were let to stroll round unimpeded.
So, my blame is not only with Karius, the senior players must take some blame for not manning up, we lost Salah and they felt sorry for themselves when there was so much to play for!

My Take on VDD

The most encouraging things were:

In his first game you could see him organising, talking and boll**king.
We have not had anyone like thst since carragher.
I like the way he does not get dragged out to the full back position, he leaves that to the full backS and wide playerS, numerous times last night Louvren would have left his position and got involved in wide positions where in the past he has cost us goals.
For the first time since Sammi we have someone who takes control of the high ball, nearly every high ball he said to everyone" leave it its mine", whereas in the past we have seen forwards bully us and take high balls on their chest or bringing it down and turning on us.
Now we have a real threat on corners, with VDD and Matip we can have a real chance of scoring some important goals.

I know it was his first game but I am old enough to have seen 40 years of center backs at Liverpool and some special ones at that, ever since we lost Sammi we have not had a decent back 2. He is strong, good on the ball, imposing, and most importantly a leader and oeganiser, hopefully he can bring the best out of Matip and Louvren and maybe even our keepers.

Early days but all looks good YNWA.

The only bad things I saw yesterday was when he tried to do a fancy flick/ chip when he was the last man, it came to nothing but could have been costly, he also got skinned fairly easily early doors by Bolasie but to be fair he didn’t try and jump in to save the situation and maybe give away a pen.
I agree with you OP that the biggest thing for me was his presence and how he commanded the air. Lovren and Matip are both big lads but just don’t do that, he will maybe come a cropper and not always win the first ball but the rest of the defence need to be ready for the second ball and cover him if he’s left stranded a little.
Overall a decent start and the goal is a great bonus and should hopefully give him confidence and keep the press off his back with regards to the price tag. That goals worth a fair bit in itself.

2.) 06 Jan 2018 13:55:09
For someone who hasn't played much this season, and nothing in the last month, he did well.
Let's just please give him time to settle and develop

What I will say is that I'm looking forward to Ed001's match reviews as I'm sure he is not a fan of VVD.

3.) 06 Jan 2018 15:02:59
Great start to VVD's LFC career, I must say. He is still lacking full fitness and that will come with time. He is a man mountain with supreme ability. That has NEVR been a question. It was if his flaws could be cleaned out and tho we saw a few of them last night, his strengths were also on show. Let's allow him to bed into the team and form a good understanding with his mates in the back line and see what happens.

If we do get Ox i think there will be a few suprised on here. I think what Klopp is looking for is pace in the side, with Mane Salah and Ox we have 3 options who all can play either left or right and all have amazing pace to break teams down. Ox may even be an option for a wing back if we go to 3 at the back, which is my thinking of the way we will play next season (hence trying for VVD) .

I for one hope we do get him,

Rossiter's pace is the problem, and injuries have slowed him down even more.

Totally agree with everything you say, however if he had brought him down we would probably have still have been at 1 nil. they were never a threat from a free kick. The basics of defending is is to stop the opposition from scoring, as I said when he realized he ****ed up he should have brought him down. I know I would have and did so on many occasions. The old 70s term professional foul come to mind. Phil Thompson 1978 V Forrest, ah another bad memory.

Evered

{Ed001's Note - they scored from a dead ball, our defence was terrible last night, they were not attacking the ball, we could not afford to give away dead balls. And it was not until Gini stumbled that he put himself in a position where he could not still have ample time to get goalside and then it was too late. I do agree with what you are saying in a lot of situations, but not that one. Wijnaldum needs his arse kicked round the room for that amateur hour play. Every player should know the basics and the first basic of defending is get goalside. It is not rocket science and there is never an excuse for getting the basics wrong.}

But when he realized that he wasnt going to get back goalside he should have brought him down, just take the card. It was a massive turning point in the game, an experience midfielder would have taken one for the team. Your right about the intelligence, he should never of let himself be in that position, but he did so he should have taken him down.

Evered

{Ed001's Note - no he should not have. He never made the attempt to get goalside, that is why he never got goalside. There was absolutely no need to give away a foul. It was all on his mistake in not knowing how to do the basics of defending. He is solely at fault on that goal. It was a dreadful piece of play and there was absolutely no need to give away a foul in a dangerous area, just get goalside and it doesn't happen.}

Gini should have brought the guy down when he realised he was on the wrong side, they would have been no threat from that position. We are not savvi enough, Kante would have taken one for the team. Too soft.

Evered

{Ed001's Note - he didn't need to bring him down, he had plenty of time to get goalside, he just lacks the intelligence to think of it and continued to try and make a challenge from the wrong side for far too long.}
