Agree that in games where teams try bully us in midfield Endo should get more minutes. Also think he would play quite well in a double pivot as his lack of pace would get exposed as much and he would also give grav a bit more freedom.

Am also starting to get concerned with Mac, has all the attributes but just seems to be off the pace. Could fast become a passenger in the midfield unless he ups his level.

Gakpo is decent but just not as good as Diaz. Probably better shooting and more direct, can see why Klopp tried to convert him to a 9 and still think he could play there personally.

It's pretty well known that Mac is nursing an injury.

Don’t know about pretty well known first I’ve heard. Don’t think there is a footballer in the country that hasn’t got some sort of ache . No excuse he’s been crap.

Pretty good review there Ed.
McAllister is no Box to box player to me. It was Caicedo for Brighton. McAllister is your Fabregas who is very good higher up the pitch and very poor tracking back and doing the running around. Caicedo is what we are missing in that midfield.
If you don’t have a Kante then you cannot play a 2 men midfield in England. Slot by now should realize it.

{Ed001's Note - Gravenberch is playing the Caicedo role.}

Good review Ed1.

Nice to see you called out and appreciated the REF for allowing a free flowing game and not stopping for silly fouls/ acting.

The crowd turned up the heat for 25-30 mins in the 2nd half. It was intimidating to them and honestly admitted by Fabian. It is really diffult to play and away teams don't know what hit them suddenly.

Not sure if you had listened to Fabian's press conf after the game. Was hoping you would mention a word or two.

{Ed001's Note - I don't tend to listen to press conferences at all to be honest.}

Great review Ed001.Thought the midfield was ineffective first half esp Mac who looked weak n slow. again Trent played well defensively but lacking going forward but I'll take that, because he is a defender first n that's his job. thought when Slot made the double substitution that sealed it for us . n iv mentioned it before on here about Gomez being invaluable for us . can play left, right, center and people wanted him gone in the summer I do think we need a strong fast midfielder though in January.

{Ed001's Note - I am so glad we kept hold of Gomez, such a nice lad as well as a very good player. Only thing he lacks, really, is aggression. That can hold him back at times from imposing himself physically like he should. Also, I wish we would make use of his throw in when he is on the pitch!}

Agree but that’s what makes Caicedo / Kante so much special. They are just on a different level. I also don’t think Zubemendi would have done any jack! He would be bullied up down and center.
I would buy a top class Destroyer and let Gravenberch play the role of Dembele at Spurs.
I also don’t see anything special in Kellehar. 5 years and still can’t kick a football. Jaros any day over him.

Caicedo is an average footballer, i woùld honestly prefer lavia if he could keep himself fit.

I really like Endo but I'm aware of his limitations. I said last season that he should be the first name on the team sheet in midfield.
This season is different with Grav being such a revelation. So far.
But Endo is not a starter for a top four side. I think we (myself included) get carried away with the type of player Endo is and not the player he really is.
It was still a very good bit of business though.

Estupinan made a mistake and woke our crowd up!

Its crazy to me Ed1, I have seen a lot of Liverpool fans that keep on praising MacAllister and criticizing Szobo even though its clear in the past few matches that Szobo is playing better than Macca. Granted that both are not playing at their best. Seems like Macca is immune to criticism as as compare to Szobo. World Cup winner tax probably.

{Ed001's Note - it was the same last season, I think it is because the commentators love Macca and always talk about how good he is, no matter how he performs.}

Thanks Ed, great review.

I was also puzzled by the comment "the liverpool way".

{Ed001's Note - I think some people forget football started before the Premier League.}

Endo needs a run of at least 10 games great at what he does but give the lad a chance not 5 mins here an there.

Great read, Ed01. Firstly, I like that you singled out this ref for praise. He was the same ref who did the game v B'mouth at Anfield and that's where I took notice of him. That game was so cleanly officiated hence, why I noticed him. The guy (don't know his name) is what a referee should be, as in: Just officiate the game. No dumb yellow cards for no reason, use your discretion fairly and call balls and strikes (an MLB term) when he sees them and most importantly, Never made it about himself. I hope he does more of our games.

As for the game, you are spot on. I have no idea of the stats for misplaced, under-hit or over-hit passes for that first half cos it would prolly be huge. It was dreadful. We played a lot better at the restart so all good there but we got to play better in midfield, IMO. As for Brighton, our slack passing enabled them a lot even tho, they played very well in that first half overall. When we stepped it up at the restart, they could handle us so like you said, we gave them the stick to beat us with.

Macca is struggling badly. Now, I don't know which combo will work but I am not playing Jones and Macca cos that was disaster vs Arsenal so we may need to give Szobo more opportunities cos his work off the ball and ability to press really helps Gravenberch, IMO. All in all, we won the game and punished both City and Arsenal for losing. These are the types of opportunities we need to cash in on this season. On to Leverkusen.

Harry wanting to pick a goalkeeper (y'know, the riskiest position to blood new talent in) on the basis of about 110 minutes of football over someone who's generally not let us down in 50 appearances for the club. Talk about MotD fever.

Never change Harry. Never change.

16.) 05 Nov 2024
05 Nov 2024 12:09:24
So if I'm getting this right, Harry listed a box to box midfielder as a player that we're missing in his first post and then proceeded to say that we should get a "destroyer" to play alongside Grav in his second post. So do we need a destroyer or a box to box midfielder now?

Gomez is a brilliant footballer, I’m so glad we kept him. The only thing he lacks compared to Konate is sheer power and a little aggression - Gomez is perfectly adept in the air but aerial duels that Konate would dominate become a bit more of a battle with Gomez.
One other thing - the presence of Endo was noticeable the instant he came on. He simply doesn’t shirk tackles nor duels, and that alone makes such a difference to the team. Liverpool will outplay 99.9% of teams but you can’t do that if you don’t win duels, something Endo is way better than MacAllister etc at doing.

18.) 05 Nov 2024
05 Nov 2024 12:19:43
Good of you to praise the referee who did well. Can you also mention his name, like you do when critisizing them? Had to google the name - Tony Harrington.

{Ed001's Note - I would have done if I had known it. Sorry for not having time to look it up.}

19.) 05 Nov 2024
05 Nov 2024 13:20:04
Either one would do it. Preferably someone like Kante / Caicedo. You could name him any jack you wish to. Changes nothing.

20.) 05 Nov 2024
05 Nov 2024 13:29:26
Gomez is not a brilliant footballer.
Ronaldo and Messi were brilliant footballers.

Onto the Szob v Mac debate: I've seen loads of criticism of Mac as well as Szob. But does it have to be one or the other?
I criticised Szob last season and this season. He hasn't done enough to convince me that he's that good.
Mac, I criticised less last season but he's been disappointing this season. He's convinced me more but we need more in midfield to the best of him.
Whoever you prefer, I'm not sure both together works. I think we need a new partner for Grav and play Mac or Szob further forward. Out of the two that would be Mac because he's a better footballer.

The Ref in this game reminds of the Refs in my lads U15s matches. They always let some fouls go and generally don't book anyone. The league brought in sin bins this season and in our 2nd match, an opposition player was sin binned with minutes to go for swearing at the ref. Well done to LFC for being top of the League.

22.) 05 Nov 2024
05 Nov 2024 14:44:05
Grow up, Rigsby. You must be some true football mind to work out that Messi and Ronaldo were brilliant footballers.
Ahh man what a daft comment.

23.) 05 Nov 2024
05 Nov 2024 15:09:16
I was sitting close enough to know the Brighton fans loved the ref in the first half and hated him in the second when we became stronger in the tackle….

24.) 05 Nov 2024
05 Nov 2024 16:13:39
Fair play to Brighton who I thought played well first half and made us look poor.

Credit to slot for his halt time team talk, Gomez for coming on at half time and playing well and then all the players for showing true resilience to turn the game in the 2nd half and win it.

25.) 05 Nov 2024
05 Nov 2024 17:22:44
The worst thing about macca is the diving and screaming antics. It's worse than embarrassing. He's getting touched on the chest and screaming touching his face rolling about. It's truly awful to watch and he's doing it every game. One of the lads should have a word. Disgraceful stuff.

{Ed025's Note - im with you MIZER, its embarrassing mate and certainly not the Liverpool way, i thought he was better than that myself..

26.) 05 Nov 2024
05 Nov 2024 18:22:29
With you on that Mizer and ed 25.

27.) 05 Nov 2024

Am I seeing Harry comparing Caicedo to Kante? They are not even in the same universe.

You can bet that if had signed Caicedo Harry would the first to criticise him too. Laughable.

Caicedo is nowhere near Kante level yet and I don’t think he will ever be.

Gravenberch on the other hand could be the best number 6 in the world in a few years time.

28.) 05 Nov 2024
05 Nov 2024 21:06:59
Lowe1, I was telling you what a brilliant footballer is. Joe Gomez is not a brilliant footballer.
He's a good, versatile squad player for us.

29.) 05 Nov 2024
05 Nov 2024 22:58:51
Who would have thought at the start of the season, Gravenberch and Curtis would be our top 2 midfielders and we’d be top of the league and 100% record in CL?

Slots a modest genius.

30.) 06 Nov 2024
06 Nov 2024 00:53:59
Ed1, thank you mate. Unfortunately I couldn't watch that game so great to read about it. So glad you mentioned about the success of the 1970s and 1980s. I think it must be the younger generation so used to the way we played under Klopp, they know no different. I also think many people are overreacting about our performances in general. Way I look at it is pretty simple, this system is working and we're getting the perfect results. Why should anybody complain about it.

A mate of mine who watched the game also specifically mentioned Gomez and said how good he was when he came on. Maybe if VVD does leave we could be looking at a Konate and Gomez partnership?

Hope you're well my mate.

{Ed001's Note - all good here mate. How are things with you?}

31.) 06 Nov 2024
06 Nov 2024 01:12:17
Ed1, very good after tonights result mate! get in! I thought that game had a draw written all over it and then we go and absolutely smash them, city lose so another perfect night mate.

I really do believe we'll win something big this year, still very early but I do think Slot will do something special this season. Fingers crossed!

Glad to hear all is well with you mate.

{Ed001's Note - I hope you are right mate. Still very early in the season, so I am not letting myself get carried away yet.}

32.) 06 Nov 2024
06 Nov 2024 01:39:08
Agree with pretty much all of that review Ed. In fact I posted something on Sunday saying the same thing after seeing the game for the first time. I thought we’d got battered and scraped a win from all of the reports but it wasn’t like that at all.

Any chances Brighton had came from our own mistakes and they didn’t have many.

Also agree about Macca, he’s certainly out of sorts at the moment and is usually the main culprit for giving the ball away in dangerous areas. I wasn’t too excited when we signed him as I’d seen nothing from him at Brighton that told me he was good enough but in the middle of last season until he had a spell out injured he looked really good and I was happy to be proved wrong.

Now he seems to have regressed back to the fragile ineffective player he was at Brighton. There is definitely a player there I just feel like he needs to be much more decisive in what he does. He has the ability I just want to see him use it consistently.

I’m not sure about him being in the wrong position I just think he needs to be stronger and more confident in his game.

06 Nov 2024 10:12:10
Oh, I did not mean to criticise, Ed001.

{Ed001's Note - it's ok mate, I should have looked it up, usually I would have.}
