The England manager should be English IMO. Just like "my second cousin 3rd removed was Irish so I can play for Ireland", should be stopped. I have always been a club before country type now I am definitively.

Be proud to represent your own country. Be proud to choose people who want to represent their own country. I clearly don’t have the credentials, but if I did, I’d never take a job managing a foreign country's team.

I think the rule is you have to play for ireland 4 times before you fully qualify for playing for us. My mate decco told me that, so take it with a grain of salt.

Should the Liverpool manager be from L4?

{Ed025's Note - no way SR, most of them have 14 fingers and marry their sisters mate.. :)

There's two Irish men playing for England.

4.) 17 Oct 2024

If we win the world cup, it wouldn't bother me if the manager was from Mars.

I didn't realize London and Birmingham were in Ireland.

6.) 17 Oct 2024

I think where the manager is from should have no relevance unless there was a rule against it.

7.) 17 Oct 2024
17 Oct 2024 19:06:03
Maybe the FA should invest in producing some good home grown managers then. I'd rather have Tuchel leading the national side than Lampard, Rooney or Gerrard!

17 Oct 2024 19:25:21
@Metro, how’s things in the 18th century?

9.) 17 Oct 2024
17 Oct 2024 20:29:56
It's a view shared by Gary Lineker, to be fair, WDW3.

10.) 17 Oct 2024
17 Oct 2024 20:43:32
The only interest I have in the national team is how well any Liverpool players do, so they could be managed by a 15 year old Vietnamese girl, I wouldn't care.
Same way if The king drove past my house driving a convertible naked whilst playing the bagpipes I wouldn't even look out of the window.

11.) 17 Oct 2024
17 Oct 2024 20:48:59
I don’t think it matters. In any way, shape or form.
Does the team doctor, kit man and tea lady need to be English as well?

12.) 17 Oct 2024
17 Oct 2024 21:25:15
The proper football starts again on Saturday. The National breaks just get in the way.

Compare apple with apple. Has any other traditional european football country ever appointed a foreign football manager? Italy, Germany, France, even Netherlands. Only England does that! Shameful.

{Ed002's Note - Another xenophobic person}

14.) 17 Oct 2024
17 Oct 2024 22:48:46
@Rome, speaks volumes about Lineker. People are people wherever you go. Same worries - health, family, money. People should look at what’s inside the box and not the label on the wrapper.

15.) 17 Oct 2024
17 Oct 2024 22:55:05
Italy, France and the Netherlands have all had foreign managers. Again, your football knowledge is astonishing!

16.) 17 Oct 2024
17 Oct 2024 22:55:14
The last English manager to win a domestic trophy was 14 years ago.
The last English manager to win the PL was in the 90s
The last English manager to win an international trophy was 60 years ago.

England hasn’t produced good English managers in decades.

17.) 17 Oct 2024
17 Oct 2024 22:58:43
Yes the French and Dutch have had foreign managers.

18.) 17 Oct 2024

@Endo, that sounds like the start of a joke.

20.) 17 Oct 2024
17 Oct 2024 23:40:22
I don’t think you can play for Ireland if your second cousin 3rd removed was Irish. Also what are they now?

Typical extreme-o point taking over.

21.) 18 Oct 2024
18 Oct 2024 00:50:02
People are missing the point which is really that tuchel is an awful manager in terms of style of play. Plays such boring and negative football.

22.) 18 Oct 2024
18 Oct 2024 01:03:43
How this is even a discussion says a great deal.

23.) 18 Oct 2024
18 Oct 2024 01:36:25
Brummy - The point of the OP is that you can be an awful manager in terms of style of play and play such boring and negative football, as long as you’re english.

24.) 18 Oct 2024
18 Oct 2024 02:20:15
IMO tuchel being foreign is not my concern as long as the players they are coaching are, however. i am not in favour of tuchel because i just don't rate him as a manager. he could be from botswana 2nd 11 for all i care as long as he gets the team playing what is needed, i just don't think tuchel is the right man for the job.

25.) 18 Oct 2024
18 Oct 2024 06:58:24
I think it was late geard houllier that said when goes to view a possible new player he doesn't look at his passport, he looks at his footballing ability, his attitude and the way he behaves.
I think recruitment in any line of work, including sport, should follow them lines.

26.) 18 Oct 2024
18 Oct 2024 07:14:18
Must have forgotten that when he signed Diouf digger.

27.) 18 Oct 2024
18 Oct 2024 07:35:26
@Brummy, I think it’s you that is missing the point. The OP is xenophobic nonsense.

If Tuchel is any good or not as a football manager is an entirely different matter.

28.) 18 Oct 2024
18 Oct 2024 08:16:00
So wait a minute, the "Three Lions Tribe" don't want a German manager in charge of their football team but are happy to continue with their anthem which is all about a Royal family who's ancestry comes from countires such as Scotland, France, Germany, Russia, Sweden, Belgium and Denmark? Go figure!

Sarina Wiegman is Dutch. I don't remember anybody complaining about her heritage when the ladies won the Euro's in 2022.

18 Oct 2024 09:46:36
WDW, the average England fans attitude towards foreigners is staggering. Just off the top of my head:

1. Grealish played for Ireland at youth level.
2. Both of Saka's parents are Nigerian.
3. Sterling was actually born in Jamaica.
4. Both of Sol Campbell's parents are Jamaican.
5. Guehi was actually born in Ivory Coast.
6. Kyle Walkers father is Jamaican.
7. Both of Ian Wright's parents are Jamaican.
8. Kane's Dad is Irish.
9. Rice played for Ireland at senior level 3 times!

We're culturally diverse in the UK. Anybody who actually cares if the manager is German needs to chill out. Happens in every sport as well. Mo Farah (Athletics) was born in Somalia, Jofra Archer (Cricket) was born in Barbados, Ethan Roots (Rugby) was born in New Zealand. People will get over it in time but it's hilarious watching the meltdown from these devout patriots who want to "keep the national team English" whilst simultaneously cheering on Nigerian, Ivorian, Irish and Jamaican players and signing about a German King.

31.) 18 Oct 2024
18 Oct 2024 10:17:23
Not that Tuchel is, but say you’re from a commwealth country would that still count!?

32.) 18 Oct 2024

Pride? I don't see many 'proud' flag waving scousers at England games. The pride before the fall.

18 Oct 2024 11:24:46
Ah MK, what a post mate.

34.) 18 Oct 2024
18 Oct 2024 11:56:12
Who cares? it's England and not Liverpool. I couldn't give a toss who they appoint, I may live in the country known as England but couldn't care less about the national team.

Before any of you from outside of the principality of Liverpool start. Enjoy watching England fail again because that's what they will do regardless of their manager.

Steve Bruce disappointed to be overlooked again by England :P.

38.) 18 Oct 2024
18 Oct 2024 17:51:16
I think the question of an “English manager” depends on the context the question being asked.

If it’s a plum faced gammon complaining about a German in charge of the team then clearly, as ed002 said, that’s xenophobic.

There is however a legitimate discussion to be had about the whole success of the St George’s Park program and the pathways for English coaches. As an example the cost in England appears prohibitive compared to some other countries (such as Spain) . Also, you have somebody like Steve Baker, current manager first team coach at non- league Farnborough who was managed over 1000 non-league games who had been rejected by the FA for the fourth time in getting on the A licence course. How many others are hitting the same problems.

There are many problems with English coaching - Tuchel is not one of them.

39.) 18 Oct 2024
18 Oct 2024 19:07:30
Exactly, MKS. Football like he world, has evolved. Roberto Martinez a Spaniard, is now coaching Portugal, just like Luis Felipe Scolari a Brazilian, did before him. Even in Adrica, they have moved on. 20 years ago, Togo was being coached by a the late Nigerian former international CB Stephen Keshi who led them to their first and only WC finals appearance in 2006. They revere hm in Togo till this day and pretty sure, they don't care where he was from.

I have no idea why people still habouring this archaic/ dinosaur attitude that "Only the English should coach England" and this coming from a country that was coached by a Swede (Erickson) and an Italian just (Capello) 15 years ago. Were Lineker and his other fossils complaining then? I don't know and frankly, don't care.

N Im not even going to talk about players and the countries they have represented in relation of the country they "should" have represented. Not sure any Nigerian is crying about Saka or Udogie picking England and Italy respectively. If you don't evolve with the times, the times will leave you behind and hence, you sound like the fossils who still speak stoneage.

40.) 18 Oct 2024
18 Oct 2024 19:21:47
Wasn’t Tuchel apparently United’s number one choice to replace ten Hag? Because that surely pushed Southgate back to the top of the list and surely Brexit Jim will go English? So from that perspective it does mean either ten Hag gets more time to continue United’s descent into mediocrity or they bring in someone like Southgate. This is a marvellous thing for English football.

41.) 18 Oct 2024
18 Oct 2024 19:42:57
Lit a few sparklers there then?!

Just an opinion: and for me there should be sterner rules around who can be a fundamental part of a COUNTRY’S participation in International competition. If a fundamentally material figure or figures are driving force behind success and they are not from that country then that country (no matter what way you look at it) didn’t succeed as a holistic.

I’m a patriot - although not particularly a royalist (neither anti) for the points made about the National Anthem - and I appreciate that my view is only that, and that others may differ.

I’m 21st century, writing whilst alive and live day in day out, and love, technological advancement and change (for the 18th century comment I really never understood ) - I am not sure how whatever century would change my view on the above!

42.) 18 Oct 2024
18 Oct 2024 20:01:10
The point @MK of the original poster (me) is I don’t shout for the England Team, my decibels have decreased in volume at a high rate over short timing as rules (either expectations or written) have relaxed or gone AWOL!

My very argument - or actually it’s not an argument it’s just an opinion which, with the situation the way it is, draws me further away from supporting my nation in a national competition (because I don’t feel like I’m supporting my nation) unless the persons that are representing it actually consider themselves Nationals of that country in all that they do!

I don’t mind what their background, culture, religion etc is and yes we do live in a multicultural society but that doesn’t mean we should live in a society where I can claim multiple nationalities for the purpose of financial gain or power.

I don’t suppose our new manager is giving up his true nationality to become English?!

43.) 18 Oct 2024
18 Oct 2024 20:50:19
They declared themselves Irish years ago you absolute fool. Boris Johnson was born in America what does that make him?

44.) 19 Oct 2024
18 Oct 2024 22:34:32
@Metro, top spot that you live in the 21st century, although you needing to state that is really rather odd .

That aside, can you point to the rule in FIFA, UEFA or FA rules and regulations that say a national team can only be managed by somebody of the same nationality?

Of course, as ever, there is nothing wrong with you having and expressing your opinions but I honestly think in this case your opinions are naively simplistic.

45.) 19 Oct 2024
19 Oct 2024 02:10:27
The england manager should be the same nationality as the royal we sing about worshiping in our national anthem. German.

46.) 19 Oct 2024
19 Oct 2024 07:38:47
@Endo I have no idea if that was to me but I said nothing about any Irish so I suspect not?! Oh and Boris Johnson is English and his parents were English he was born US due to fathers study but he chose (or his parents chose) his nationality and stuck with it. Very different to a person from another chosen nationality running something for their non-country.

@WDW3 I stated 21 century because of the comment that I was in 18th (read up)!

It’s just an opinion chaps not that deep I never really supported the national team before anyway.

47.) 20 Oct 2024
20 Oct 2024 11:08:48
Should atheists sing the national anthem, too?
