How does a player win UEFA player of the year ahead of Messi- but then somehow lose to him for World Player?

Did I miss Messi leading Argentina to glory or something?

The system is so biased towards attacking players that it makes you wonder how it is that Cannavaro even won in the first place many years ago. Cannavaro won the World Cup that year, but then Messi's showing was no better than VVD's at the last Cup so what's the deciding factor? Must be Messi's 50 plus goals. Ronaldo scored "only" 28 last season and he was not even in the neighbourhood tonight.

This whole thing has become a farce since the "manufactured" rivalry between Ronaldo and Messi. It's as if their army of followers all over the world have hijacked the ability of others to have a diff. opinion and pick someone other than both players as the best player of the year.

Well I guess uefa have more of a focus on the champions league for one. Even as a die hard Liverpool fan, you can’t put vvd in the category of messi. It is biased toward any attacking players, but when messi continues to hit the 50s in terms of goals scored, how can you argue?

Would have loved VVD to win it, but Messi scoring 51 and assisting 22 means he heavily deserved it. Messi is such a phenomenal player that these stats have become normal, if Salah had scored and assisted that many we would be expecting him to win every single award. Unfortunately for other players as long as Messi is still playing, nobody else stands much of a chance.
