Ed, have we looked at or considered any player other than Ricardo Pereira for the duel RB/ LB cover? Do you think he is the type of player who would be happy to be cover? I appreciate that for this type of player to come in we would need to move Clyne on and one of the youth LBs.

{Ed002's Note - Interest in Ricardo Pereira is long gone and I rather doubt he would want to sit on the bench. Some coaches won't even include FBs on the bench as others can adapt in the case of injury and they would not be needed for a formation change. Maybe Clyne will stay?}

We do have any of Milner, Ox, Fab or even Wijnaldum who could cover full back in an emergency during a match, but if Lewis can step up and let Clyne run down his contract as a squad option then that could save going out and spending unnecessarily on back ups.

Ed002, Clyne might stay but not sure he will make the bench this season when we have Milner, Gomez and Fab who can fill in at RB.

{Ed002's Note - That is my point. Why take up places on the bench if versatile cover is available.}

And it’s a good point too Ed.

Exactly Ed002.

I would like us to sign somebody as cover for LB but then again the players we have targeted for LB may want 1st team football so what then happens to Robertson?

Liverpool cannot go spend for the sake of adding players to make up numbers and singing players as cover substituting their wages for playing time and sitting them on the bench.

We have seen this blow up in our face when it comes to Grujic who is struggling to get a work permit! I am sure we are fitting the bill for at least half his wages while he is on loan.

Clyne is on holiday at Anfield and the club want rid. Perhaps we will sign another RB once Clyne leaves.

When does clynes' contract end?

{Ed025's Note - june 2020 mate..

If we want to maintain our top 2 position then we have to recognise that players like Clyne are a necessary evil. We need to have cover in depth for players who will only make the ocasional appearance (even onto the bench) . I’m fine with him being the cover squad position for the remaining year of his contract.

{Ed001's Note - players like Clyne aren't. Good professionals that can be used for more than just desperation cases are. Clyne should never be anywhere near Liverpool.}

I feel sorry for a player like Grujic. We sined him on the basis of becoming a 1st team starter.

It has not panned out that way. We just cannot afford anymore signings like that.

This transfer window will perhaps show that LFC are done with wasting valuable resources.

I agree Ed001 on Clyne mate not good enough to be back up, however he is still with us and getting plenty of minutes in preseason. Do you still expect us to bring in cover for the full back area?

{Ed001's Note - it is trying to find players that are willing to be back up.}

Clyne will leave end of this season once his contract has ended. I honestly do not see him getting any minutes unless all our options at RB are injured.

Grujic will replace lallana next season and be back up for fab.

I reckon clyne will leave this summer. Probably why he is getting the minutes, a shop window kinda thing.

But im not going to worry if he stays. He can play against the smaller teams i think and give trent a break. It'll be worrying if we get the injuries that would see clyne start as he is capable of a brain freeze. He can seem like he's playing well and then he switches off and the ball is in the back of the net.

Thanks Ed25, roll on June 2020 then lol.

{Ed025's Note - you will be in de-clyne by then mate.. :)

Robbie, no club puts a player out to play minutes (preseason or otherwise) just to put him in the so called "shop window". None of that stuff ha ever been true. It is just nonsensical jargon that people say that make no sense.

If a club wants Clyne, pretty sure they would have been scouting him WAY before this preseason. He is playing now cos well, he is a pro and has to do his job as in, play when picked. That's it. Now as per Clyne staying or going, he is poor at near all levels of the FB position and needs to be gone, as Ed01 eloquently put it.

RedWolf, as time runs out and teams'havent been able to get their preferred option, they may just decide to take a chance on an experienced England International right back and that's where the whole notion of the shop window comes into play.

Lemuel, your premise is correct BUT there is one caveat. "Putting a player in the shop window" schtick is not a thing and even the Ed's debunked that notion royally already. Why? Simple. If CP wanted Clyne, they have seen him play last season on loan and possibly were watching him as on of their alternatives if none of their first options were available. Playing him in preseason means nothing cos if you haven't guessed it, preseason is for fitness and preparation, not an opportunity to scout players.
