There's a story out there that Gerrard coming into the academy is basically a done deal but, unless I'm being dense, I haven't seen that on here. I'm all for it, get a bit of experience and then come through the ranks at Liverpool or use it as a stepping stone to the next job, either way I'm delighted.

Id love to see Stevie G back home, working with our youth, what a player to inspire them and I think we've missed the old boot room culture.

2.) 27 Nov 2016 02:30:53
Bootroom culture has no place in today's world where respect is for everyone, even new and young players.

3.) 27 Nov 2016 15:26:46
the bootroom was unique to Liverpool fc leek, and should never have been scrapped imo.

4.) 27 Nov 2016 15:26:46

5.) 27 Nov 2016 18:41:52
Bullying and making yourself bigger than everything isn't bootroom though. Gerrard lived and breathed lfc, he definitely had RED blood and nobody could take that away but Gerrard did not add any kind of bootroom culture. Besides if you went back to the days of bootroom culture there would be no Klopp, LFC managers came from ex players that where bled through our system. Them days are gone.

6.) 28 Nov 2016 06:54:15
I think Gerrard would be superb with our younger players. He has already coached one of the young teams, maybe the U16's if memory serves.
Imagine being 14/ 15/ 16 and being coached by Gerrard. He will learn from some of the other coaches at the club.
He could have used links to walk straight into management but is instead learning his trade with the youths. I think its a very smart decision all round.

{Ed001's Note - agreed.}

7.) 28 Nov 2016 13:27:25
Spot on, Andy. He would be a great inspiration for the younger players who have idolized him through out their lives.

8.) 03 Dec 2016 02:54:12
Its impossible to bring back the boot room culture.
It describes a collection of legendry, brilliant though humble ( bar Shanks on the humble) football people who are a huge part of our great history.
The link to the bootroom left when Kenny did.
I always thought that we lost something when Alan Hansen didn't go into management. He had a great way about him.

Hi eds, reading about Rossiter maybe leaving this summer. Can you shed any light on his situation? I thought he was one of our better prospects.

muscatred

{Ed002's Note - There is interest from Rangers - that is all I can say really. I suspect a number of the "prospects" will be moved on by Klopp. It is a very large squad.}

Hey Eds, Telegraph reporting that Arsenal are looking to bid for Sterling. Have you heard anything new and, if so, any whisper of Walcott coming the other way?

muscatred

{Ed002's Note - Nothing has changed as far as I know. Arsenal have previously shown an interest.}

Please not Walcott!

Our first 11 has received some pretty massive adulation this season and it's great that we're in the title hunt but make no bones about it, we are not yet the finished product, no team in history has ever been.

Klopp has to be looking at what players we can bring in which will improve the team because, no matter how good a coach Klopp is, he needs the best players to make us the best team. Who out of our current team could we not improve on?

Coutinho is currently the best player in his position in the league, as is Matip and maybe Hendo and Mane. Other than that, every other player can be improved on. That doesn't mean I want us to buy 7 new players, a lot of the players I didn't mention are good enough to be in the best team in the country it's just that the project is not finished.

Even if we become the best team in the country it's still not finished because the other teams will always be getting better. We should never settle, we should always be looking for the next big transfer.

1.) 06 Dec 2016 00:02:07
I honestly don't think he will bring anyone in at January.
As he will have to bed them in and that takes a full preseason in Klopps methods.

2.) 06 Dec 2016 00:44:06
You won't find best players int the winter TW as no one will sell to you except for stupid money out of desperation, something we are not. Not just any kind of player can fit the way we play. We are a well oiled machine on our day and so said player has to be ready to go from day one an that ain't going to happen in mid season.

3.) 06 Dec 2016 11:16:19
Didn't say anything about winter TW, just trying to make sure we keep perspective. There are a few too many on here that take offense when anyone brings up the topic of transfers.

Couple of quick points.

As someone who thought it was unfair on Migs to drop him I now have to say get off Karius' back. Klopp hopes that Karius will end up being top class, to get there he has to give him game time and he has to accept the occasional bad game. Yesterday was the first time Karius cost us points, so far it is a one off and not a trend. If it becomes a regular thing then we can talk about Migs coming back in but right now Klopp has to demonstrate he has faith in the lad.

I made a point about our CBs last week, I know stats can be misleading and are only part of the story but this makes stark reading. With Matip in the team we've conceded once every 110 minutes, that plummets to once every 30 minutes when he's off the field. I hope Gomez gets some opportunities this season and I'd love it if he ended up being a star but if he's still a year or two away from being a starter then our transfer priority has to be at CB.

muscatred

1.) 06 Dec 2016 00:50:59
On one hand, you say we should get of Karius' back which I agree with, and then on the other hand, you say his error cost us points. You are contradicting yourself, my friend. He should have held on to the shot but where was the defender to protect him in case a rebound happened? Where was the protection in front of him when our defence were all over the shop? Also, Migs was not unfairly dropped. He was dropped because he's a three year failure and he's still making mistakes prior to his benching and going back to him now is just as dumb as we know who he is. Even if Karius is not the answer, something we can only know after two seasons at least, Migs will STILL not be the answer and he'll b off. Stuck with Karius and support him as Migs time is past.

2.) 06 Dec 2016 06:34:57
Getting rid of goal keepers without making any change in the defense wouldn't make much difference. You have to investigate how the ball reached the 6 yard box.

3.) 06 Dec 2016 08:38:22
The ball reached the 6 yard box because there's 2 teams on the pitch and one of them is trying to score against us. You can't keep a team out of your area in every game for 90 minutes. I've been critical of Karius after that and rightly so it was an awful performance but I don't want rid of him. I'm just hoping that this is the kick up the backside he and the coaching staff need to improve. We won't win anything if our keeper can't make basic saves.

4.) 06 Dec 2016 11:18:03
Hamilton, It's times like this I feel you don't actually read the posts you respond to.

5.) 06 Dec 2016 11:21:42
Until karius gives away an indirect free kick for holding onto the ball for half an hour, I'll support him. His kicking was excellent on Sunday btw.

A good run out last night and what a story for Ben Woodburn, whether he'll make it or not it's too early to say but I bet his name will be in the record books for decades to come.

The were a number of positives last night but for me the star was Origi. I haven't warmed to Origi as much as some others have on this site with my main criticism being that he doesn't carry enough goal threat but if he can perform like he did last night and at the weekend regularly then he won't just overtake Studge in the pecking order but he may well take Firmino's place as well.

His general play was excellent but his goal demonstrated what I think he's been missing, the predatory instinct that all the best strikers have. It was a great ball by A-A but Origi still had a lot to do to get to in ahead of the defender and keeper and it was a class finish. I expect he'll start again on Sunday and it's another chance for him to move from prospect to established first team player.

muscatred

1.) 30 Nov 2016 14:57:19
So Origi will take both Sturridge and Firmi's place? Seems a bit of an advantage to the other sides that we only play 10 men ;-)
But seriously looks really promising very strong and skilful when running with the ball difficult to stop and I don't think he is really match fit right now either.

2.) 30 Nov 2016 15:42:06
Woodburn will make it if the fans alloe him to grow and mature into his mid-20's. He should be used as a backup for cup games, for now, nothing more, he needs to learn and have pressure taken off him.

3.) 30 Nov 2016 17:25:14
Origi is the future of LFC at the CF position, period. I already saw that last season when he was on that scoring streak and had he not been injured by Funes Mori in the derby game, Heaven knows where he would have been. The guy has EVERYTHING required of a CF (pace, power, physical presence, aerial ability, and now predatory and poacher-like instincts) to be a top class CF and most of all, he is humble, hardworking, determined and eager to learn and improve. If he keeps that up, the sky is the limit for him going forward.

4.) 30 Nov 2016 18:13:39
Agree but how do we integrate him w/ o taking out the untouchables; coutihno, firmino, mane and lallana? It's a good problem to have for sure!

29 Nov 2016 17:49:17
Wondered what you think of our CB situation? Matip has clearly been a star since he came in but, whilst Lovren is decent and a valued member of the team, I think he's the 'least good' member of our first 11 and the next player we should upgrade. My hope is that Gomez is the answer but, assuming he's even good enough, I feel he's at least 18 months away from being first choice. Should we stick with Lovren for the medium term or see if we can bring in a world class partner for Matip in the summer?

muscatred

1.) 29 Nov 2016 19:05:09
Klopp believes in coaching first and replacing if coaching does not work. Lovren has improved a lot since his calamitous days under BR but then again even a CB duo of Maldini-Baresi would look useless under him. Lovren has improved remarkably especially with Matip next to him as the leader of the back line. Is he the answer? Only time will tell. As for Gomez, he needs a run of games at CB, not LB as he isn`t one. He won`t get them here hence, a loan should be the way forward, just like Ward is doing at Huddersfield and only after that should he be judged.

{Ed002's Note - I think, and this has been explained on many occasions before, that Gomez has zero experience at anything like the Premier League level, and whilst Klipperty apparently made commitments to the lad they may not be kept. Ward will get his chance as a number two next season when Mignolet will kove on - if, and it is a big if, Ward can live with the chances as the come along then that will work just fine. But the Liverpool fans also need to realise that many goalkeepers do not have the mentality to be happy with the armchair and picking the occasional appearance up (hence why so many back up keepers are in their mid thirties). It will be a big decision for Ward in the summer - Liverpool number two, or a number one chance at a second tier side, perhaps in the Premier League.}

2.) 29 Nov 2016 19:29:56
We are second in the league and starting to get clean sheets and you want to get rid of one of our players, nice faith in the guys dude. Let's maybe give them till end of the season and maybe they'll repay us with more clean sheets and a new great Liverpool CB partnership, worth giving them the chance?

3.) 29 Nov 2016 20:15:46
That's a very romanticised view of how Klopp works Ham, klopp's team will already have a rough idea of future transfer plans and probably has a priority, it may not be Lovren but there will be new first 11 players next year. I just like speculating what he may be thinking.

27 Oct 2016 14:47:26
When Benteke left a lot of us made jokes about how we hoped he'd he be gentle with us when we played Palace, that day has come. Theoretically we are very vulnerable to the Palace system, genuine wingers can exploit the space behind our full backs and we know how much trouble crosses cause us. Therefore, and especially as we're away, do we make changes to counter this threat or do we play our standard set up with the expectation that we will score more than we concede?

My gut is keep it the same but if we do drop points hindsight will call us naive.

muscatred

1.) 27 Oct 2016 15:19:55
Cabaye to Puncheon or Zaha and then lump it to Benteke.
Palace is a decent team with some decent players. This one game is not easy by any stretch, I hope they sit back and allow us all the possession. If they press us, We will concede one goal.

2.) 27 Oct 2016 15:34:16
Just make sure matip keeps a close eye on benteke, we all know he's not going to do anything but stand around in the box anyway.

3.) 27 Oct 2016 15:50:52
I don't see us changing at all tbh. We'll play the same way we've been playing all season. I don't think it suits us to be more defensive, because instead of the crosses into the box being on the counter, they'll be crossing when we're static, and let's be honest, corners highlight our effectiveness on static crosses into the box.

I think the fact they play with width will suit us. They can definitely hurt us, but I don't see Zaha or Townsend as having the defensive nous or concentration to stop us causing damage out wide, with Clyne and Milner doubling up on the fullbacks.

We need to win that midfield battle because they'll be all over us like a rash early on. It's never an easy ground to play at, but can put a few past these for sure.

4.) 27 Oct 2016 17:12:54
Palace need to worry about how we play. I say keep the ethos that has led us to the top of, albeit fledgling, league table.

5.) 27 Oct 2016 17:53:03
Harry, why do you think if they press us we will concede? CP don`t play the press system and they are more of a counter attacking team with pace on the flanks, even at home vs a big team like us. Last year when we played them at their place, we went a goal down and a man down. Pardew instead of taking risks and winning the game, he played conservative and we not only came back, we won and we were the better team with 10 men. What does that say about Pardew? He`s incompetent, that`s what. CP will play counter attacking football and launch it forward at every opportunity to CB or Zaha and Townsend on the flanks. As for those who said Benteke always scored against us. be mindful that he always scored vs a team managed by, you guessed it, BR, a manager who who couldn`t be arsed about defensive football (still getting thumped at Celtic in the CL by the way and conceding for fun) . Now we have Klopp who is improving our defensive standing slowly but surely (as we barly concede free kicks) and Matip has dealt with every single aerial threat he`s been presented with. We`ll be fine, IMO.

6.) 27 Oct 2016 19:37:57
Hamilton

Jose never play pressing game and UTD pressed us while first half. A good manager identifies the weakness in the opposition team. Palace being at home in front of their crowd wouldn't sit back and allow us to dominate the ball.

7.) 27 Oct 2016 19:30:06
Matip has impressed me loads, he looks a real talent. He's handled everything so far and looks unflappable, he's a calming influence on the side and a bit like Hyypia.

8.) 27 Oct 2016 22:47:05
I think the idea is that if we play to our strengths then palace will have too much to deal with and our gegen press style should stop any counter attack well away from our goal.
Palace may play long and hope to score from a corner or a free.

9.) 27 Oct 2016 23:36:12
I have to agree, united game almost resembles the different struggles we face against certain defensive teams. Fist half, they where solid and resolute and pressed us in the middle of the park not allowing us to get any rhythem and if they used the width more and showed more ambition going forward they would have had more chances, possibly even a goal. that's how you expect a crystal palace team to set up. Second half, you effectively saw 10 men behind the ball parking the bus being very stubborn in defence and limiting us to relying on a piece of magic or luck which was saved, even though we had all of the ball.

Basically, palace will set up to try win the game, whereas west brom set up to get a point. So this game is more dangerous but it could go either way, they could overwhelm us and get a goal or two on the counter or a set piece early on and see out the game from there, or they could end up leaving themselves exposed, opening up the pitch for us to exploite them and score back to back goals. It depends on how sharp we are at the beginning of the match, if we play like we have just woken up, it could be a bad result.

10.) 28 Oct 2016 05:33:46
You're all making it very complicated. :-)
We win by keeping the ball. don't give them the ball, don't let them have the ball.
Harry them whenever they"ve got it. Pass and move when we've got it.
Finally score more than they do.
:-)

11.) 28 Oct 2016 07:44:16
Exactly redted. Essentially, You've got to hold and give, but do it at the right time. You can be slow or fast, but you must get to the line.
They'll always hit you and hurt you, defend and attack. There's only one way to beat them. Get round the back.

12.) 28 Oct 2016 15:10:00
We shall see, Harry.

13.) 28 Oct 2016 18:06:58
Pass and move its the Liverpool groove.

14.) 28 Oct 2016 18:35:31
Amen, Kate.

15.) 28 Oct 2016 23:56:37
Palace will 'exploit all our weaknesses' and we'll win 3-0 😄.

Hi Eds, the signing of Klavan seemed to be a bit of a surprise at the time but if you're correct about Sakho hindsight makes it look like he was brought in as his replacement. Is there a shred of truth in that or am I making a connection where none exists?

{Ed002's Note - The decision regarding Sakho was taken after Klavan signed but you would think that there was some thought process involved.}

Hamilton, I'm a fan of stats so take it from me, the use of stats is all in the interpretation. You're right that that we're conceding the least chances but when we're still conceding more goals than our rivals that highlights a real problem. We've conceded once every 6 shots, compare that to Spurs who've conceded once every 13 and it suggests that the chances that teams get against us are easier than the ones against our rivals, we're actually the worst in the league in this regard.

This is partly down to the style we play, highly aggressive football works really well, right up to the point where the ball breaks for the opposition and then it leaves us really exposed. Dot's right, calming things down once we're ahead would be very prudent.

Hamilton, sometimes you make Harry look coherent, what's your point? That if we play really well we'll win games? That if we don't concede goals no one will say our defence is bad? If we were 'more than good enough to see out the game' then we would have seen out the game, instead we conceded three goals and lost, that's a pretty strong argument that we, in fact, weren't good enough. There are many factors that contributed to that happening and one of those is a defence that folded like a cheap suit. This is a problem that will bring Klopp much concern and he will absolutely be looking for a solution.

We didn't waiver from the system, we just weren't very good for 15 minutes. We cannot dominate games 100% of the time, therefore we need a defence which can withstand the pressure when we take our foot off the gas. With Matip in the team we have that, without him we don't.
