When ed1 or ed2 definitely confirm the coutinho deal then I will start to believe he's gone.
So eds is it true?

madmax

{Ed001's Note - yes mate.}

1.) 06 Jan 2018 18:27:25
Cheers man. Your the only guys I believe.

2.) 06 Jan 2018 18:44:30
Will he struggle to pass the medical what with his injury?

3.) 06 Jan 2018 18:57:26
Butt hurt heals quickly so I am afraid not.

4.) 06 Jan 2018 19:00:16
Players can still pass medicals even with an injury lol.

5.) 06 Jan 2018 19:04:57
Glad the whole saga is over and done with, I don’t understand his rush to go this month but hey ho. It’s done and dusted and we can move on without the distraction 👍.

6.) 06 Jan 2018 19:06:53
Every single new report confirms it but you only believe eds. Madness hahaha.

7.) 06 Jan 2018 19:13:10
It's on Barca's webpage, so pretty official now :)

8.) 06 Jan 2018 19:41:18
It was confirmed by Nike last week too haha.

9.) 06 Jan 2018 19:45:22
By thank God I'm bored with his sulking.

10.) 06 Jan 2018 19:54:43
Yeah scuffs on the bottom lip heal pretty fast.

11.) 06 Jan 2018 21:03:12
Barcelonaitus is easily curable. just need a wad of money, a new shirt an a trip abroad and coutinho will be fit as a fiddle.

05 Dec 2013 13:33:32
Hey eds.
Read somewere this morning that samid yesil is of interest to beskitas. Any truth? Wouldn't mind seeing the kid get a chance while sturridge is out.
Cheers.

madmax

{Ed002's Note - A representative of Besiktas has said that they have approached Liverpool apout Yesil - it has been suggested that Eintracht Braunschweig might also have an interest.}

He is the one we had been waiting for BUT just never knew it.

27 Mar 2023 19:29:05
To the eds and any other posters.
Do you think football is better now than it was 20 years ago? Could be a long or short answer.
I feel personally there aren't as many characters, very robotic in performance and personality.
Even on the pitch, not great. But open to hearing different view points.

madmax

{Ed025's Note - there were more characters 20 years ago max and the moneyball culture not as bad...oh and the referees were better mate..

1.) 27 Mar 2023 20:04:14
I would agree with Ed025, I started watching football (properly! ) in the early 90s when I was in my early teens (prior to that, I was too young really to understand), and there were so many more characters, from Souness to Fowler to Macca (Liverpool bias! ), but also Gazza, Hoddle, Waddle, Cantona etc.

I think the perceived lack of characters in this day and age is, largely, down to Wenger! He professionalised the game in England and now every player must have at least a base level of fitness to play at the highest level. The 'characters' like Molby and Gazza wouldn't be fit enough to make it at the top level these days. Characters in the past seemed to go hand in hand with the drinking culture, which wouldn't be tolerated these days.

We still have them - look at Ronaldo and Ibrahimovic as examples - but we have a vast majority of identikit robots as the OP mentioned.

2.) 27 Mar 2023 20:22:15
I’ve met Ronaldo, he doesn’t have a personality.

3.) 27 Mar 2023 21:31:06
Football peaked in the early 2000s imo. Most players today wouldn't lace any players from that times boots, haaland isntye equivalent to say Christian vieri who wasn't even the best striker in Italy at the time. Just a few examples of some of the players of the late 90s early 2000s for some of the youngsters unfortunate enough to miss this amazing generation of football

Goalkeepers - Toldo dida Buffon barthez schmeichel seaman Van Der sar Peruzzi given hislop casillas Kahn

Defenders - simeone maldini costacurta stam cafu Roberto Carlos hierro Nesta Campbell vidic Ferdinand Terry babbel zanetti cannavaro

Midfielders - rui Costa Deco Zidane Davids seedorf albertini gazza scholes Gerrard lampard xabi Alonso xavi iniesta ballack schweinsteiger rijkard van bommell ginola

Attackers - crespo shevchenko inzaghi vieri r9 Raul morientes Owen Fowler Les Ferdinand le tissier rivaldo Sonny Anderson saviola van nistelrooy .

You can get your bottom to a barn dance there's a tonne more as well. 95-05 was prime football and barring Messi and CR7 today's generation doesn't even come close.

4.) 27 Mar 2023 21:40:39
Cant agree about the refs sorry Ed. They were terrible 20 years ago to.

{Ed025's Note - but at least they made decisions baz, not like this crowd now who use VAR as a crutch mate to cover their arses..

5.) 27 Mar 2023 22:13:16
Bruno Fernandez and neymar both have characters - just ones that i would hate for my kids to have.

6.) 27 Mar 2023 22:13:32
I agree with Zed, I think that the players are technically better, but that doesn’t necessarily make it more enjoyable.

I think there are some great games, some boring games, and some ok games. That’s the same now as it was 20 years ago, as it will have been 50 years ago, and so on.

7.) 27 Mar 2023 22:13:48
Spot on Ed025 - are you sure you are an Everton fan? You seem to have two many correct opinions to be a bluenose ?

I think everybody has a fondness for the age that the fall in love with the game which for me was the 60’s when there were giants playing the game. I remember when West Ham showed up after we won the 66 World Cup with Bobby Moore, Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst showed up and Stoke with Gordon Banks. Then United showed up with Nobby Stiles, Bobby Charlton, Dennis Law and the Boy from Belfast (by far and away the best player of my lifetime) . There were characters, lads who could play for football or ‘get stuck in’ if that’s the way the game went. People on the terraces went to watch the match - not record games on their phones at matches they were actually at - and tended to have a fair bit more respect for opposition players and fans in general.

I could go on but it already sounds like the 4 Yorkshiremen sketch, but yes football and everybody associated with it was a lot better back in the day.

{Ed025's Note - we both sound like a couple of auld arses WDW but i enjoyed footy a lot more then, money has killed the game along with sky and the internet, we now have these microwave supporters demanding instant success and owners sacking managers if they lose 3 games in a row and its just not right imo mate, and dont get me started on players wages, some of them earn a yearly income bigger than a third world country and we have nurses going to foodbanks and pensioners deciding whether to eat or heat...disgusting really...now i will get off my soap box..

8.) 27 Mar 2023 22:24:02
Yeah hiding behind VAR has made a bad bunch worse. I think when the Premier league went huge the refs wanted to be celebs to and started to believe people paid the gate money to see them. As for characters I think you need to go back a bit further for most of the big characters. England's strike partnership of Shearer and Owen was one I'd definitely miss a night out with.

9.) 27 Mar 2023 22:37:36
It’s a shame that I live in Australia these days as it would be good to have a pint and go to the match. Think we’d a have a laugh - especially if the match was at Goodison ?.

10.) 27 Mar 2023 22:38:58
I'd say the players are technically worse but much more athletic and have better facilities, pitches and sports science. I think far too many have no idea how to read the game and are over conditioned, seems like if you have pace then you have half a chance these days.

I agree with TogG that football peaked in the early to mid 2000's.

11.) 27 Mar 2023 23:02:43
I think I've posted this before, but I miss the mitre balls, admiral, umbro, and reebok kits (before they were bought out), black boots and no shin guards, and goal keepers who didn't need sissy ass gloves. I miss hard tackles without the bs rolling around acting like you were shot. I miss the days that if you did fake an injury, you'd end up with one quickly for acting like a twat, I miss muddy pitches and hard nosed smack mouth football when men were men and sheep were scared.

12.) 27 Mar 2023 23:32:21
Most of the players are social media trained robots I definitely miss players having some personality. I think players from 20 years ago or more also had the benefit of not having every single misplaced pass all over twitter and YouTube. Players are much better athletes now too.

13.) 28 Mar 2023 01:06:13
There were players like Rod Marsh, brilliant footballer but ‘wayward’ shall we say.

Legend has it that when he was playing for QPR the coach said to him before a game (after Rod had been out on the turps during the week) ‘If you aren’t up to it I’m pulling you off at half time’. Apparently Marsh replied ‘At Fulham we only used to get oranges’…….

14.) 28 Mar 2023 01:57:31
I think overall, footballers nowadays are better technically and are much fitter. But the main difference is that they are seen more like celebrities than athletes, and are just more distant from fans now than they were before.

15.) 28 Mar 2023 07:18:39
As a spectacle VAR has significantly reduced my enjoyment of it to the point that I don’t really make an effort to watch games anymore. Technically it’s arguably slightly better, I think in terms of the actual football its similar in quality, but VAR and all that comes with it has made it difficult for me to keep watching.

16.) 28 Mar 2023 08:28:35
Yeah stone I'm with you. Keepers in their own top with the outfield shorts and socks was much cooler and also the gloves that look like they'd just washed the dishes. I also miss the orange ball that was used in the snow.

17.) 28 Mar 2023 08:11:08
Ex25 mobile phones and cameras everywhere are the problem. Players know that one mistake whether physical or verbal on or off the pitch could ruin their career / brand.

It’s no wonder they all act like robots in public as they’re too scared to do anything that could be perceived as wrong by the anonymous cancel culture lynch mob.

{Ed025's Note - but is that really a bad thing 1jj?, for years these highly paid prima donnas have been getting away with offences like rape, wife beating, drug taking and anti-social behaviour due to their celebrity status and extreme wealth mate, i dont have much sympathy for sportsmen and anyone else who,s ability to hire the best lawyers gives them priority over the normal guy in the street..

18.) 28 Mar 2023 08:33:39
Let's be honest, any player showing any eccentricities would have that used as a stick to beat him with as soon as he had a bad game.
We have "supporters" on here who were slagging a coach for daring to write a book and release it while we were in a rough patch.
It isn't just the game that's changed, it's the general fanbase too.
Ed025 is spot on, lose some games and everyone and everything needs to be slagged and sacked.
Very few seem to actually enjoy what's happening on the pitch nowadays.

19.) 28 Mar 2023 09:32:52
Football 25/ 30 years ago. Ahhhh isn't it. Kids in the park having a kick about. Jumpers for goal posts.

{Ed025's Note - halcyon days indeed gaga, i remember it well mate..and the arguments of how high the imaginary bar was.. :)

20.) 28 Mar 2023 09:41:59
Zeddicus
Would you class Hoddle and Waddle as characters, good players yes.

21.) 28 Mar 2023 09:55:05
Gaga I would consider Waddle a character. Amazing hair to. Hoddle for me seemed to very straight laced. But definitely a great player. Apparently he got knocked for being a bit lazy but someone as talented as he was I'd say get players round him to compensate for his short comings.

22.) 28 Mar 2023 10:10:51
Defenders are bigger, stronger and faster than ever. The old school mavericks would never make it off the local park these days.

We've substituted the marvel of individual brilliance to brilliant team and tactical play, athleticism and statistical output.

I'll admit, the Klopp team of 2017-2020 was the most complete LFC team I have seen and I enjoyed watching them week in, week out. The system, the players in it, the way they dealt with every setback - the whole package - was brilliant.

As for characters - as posters here have suggested, social media has changed everything but it is too easy to blame it entirely on that. The habits and hobbies of young people have changed too.

23.) 28 Mar 2023 10:24:12
Here’s the thing with the referee point, in years gone by yes thou has honking decisions but the majority were decisions you could argue and we would all enjoy arguing about it. That was part of the game.

Now they are to scared to make a decision on field and far to stupid in the VAR booth to get the right one. Never blame the technology, blame the muppets using it.

Best change in football happened in the World Cup with adding on all the extra time. Bring that in everywhere now. Brilliant idea.

24.) 28 Mar 2023 10:22:39
the crap players got upto in the 80s,90s they'd be crucified in the modern day and you can't tell me they didn't do some bad stuff as Ed025 described for the current players.

Characters yes and they had more personality I guess. but todays players would run rings around them fitness wise they wouldn't keep up.

25.) 28 Mar 2023 10:43:27
Above all else, the ‘Guardiolafication’ of the game has ruined it the most.

There is no longer any room for individuality, flair or personality. Players can no longer think for themselves, they play, walk and talk like robots. Nobody seems able to defend anymore and the game has become a lot easier, scoring goals is far less difficult. Great strikers back then couldn’t get near the tallies that a lot of players reach today, they had to be much more precise with their touches and timing because teams back then could actually defend. Nobody takes shots from outside the box anymore. Everyone tries to play possession football, even if you’re a team near the bottom of the table, nobody plays with any excitement or directness anymore.

That’s before you get onto the referees being absolute spanners and the resources accumulating at the top of the game destroying any competition there once was. Also what Twitter has done to our consumption of it, even just talking about football is a chore, reactionary discourse seems to get worse by the day.

I often find myself questioning whether it’s worth bothering with anymore.

26.) 28 Mar 2023 10:53:46
I started watching football in the late 80s, would love to have properly seen the 70s and early 80s if I'm honest

The thing I miss though is players tended to just get up and get on with things, unless it was a truly awful tackle, those warranted a bit of afters lol

These days players just throw themselves to the ground with any slight or even imaginary contact fs. Commentators don't help either as some players are labelled cheats etc whereas others (the likes of Sterling and Kane for example) are referred to as being clever, for what are blatant dives!

That's part of what I don't like, then trying to get players booked, the constant whinges to the ref, the 'dark arts' we see in Europesn games etc - was the game like that in the 70s and 80s? I mean even in Italy or Spain?

Some of the new rules are designed to speed the game up snd protect players - I mean, I'd love to see the likes of a George Best playing on today's pitches and with today's protections.

27.) 28 Mar 2023 09:54:35
Ed025. We should meet up in the Grapes or the Elephant and reminisce about the good old days.

{Ed025's Note - i dont know about the grapes gaga but i do like the elephant mate, i also like the cobden and the coffee house, lets do that in the near future mate..

28.) 28 Mar 2023 11:34:19
Personally, I think there is a bit of a cocktail of why it feels like it peters around the late 90's to mid 00's.

I think it has a lot to do with when you grow up, I could watch a lot more football then compared to now. But I do think the 90's/ 00's had some brilliant players (when Topg can leave out players like Figo and still make an impressive list, you can't say it didn't have depth) . And I think international football was at it's best then too.

You had the brazillian teams that felt they had a top class player in every position, but now teams have greater resources and can become world 11's. I wouldn't expect the top national team now to beat the teams at the top of the club game.

Another issue I think is society, the players now are in the limelight day in day out. To watch or hear about those players you needed an interview or magazine article. There was a less is more approach. Now you flick up social media and they are there in an instant. The aura around footballers seems to have gone.

But I think the biggest change is money in the game, you can now be a mid/ level prem player and be set for life. Those players needed the drive to earn the mega bucks and I think it made the game better. Competition drives results. You have young kids now who have everything they could possibly need and without proper guidance and drive. Will peter out very quickly as what is drving them on to improve and earn more?

{Ed025's Note - i think you are spot on WYred..

29.) 28 Mar 2023 11:51:07
Hey Ed my home boss used to work in the cobden, coffee house and the white horse so if you drank in them during the late 90s to early 2000s chances are she served you. I hope you tipped well.

{Ed025's Note - i always give a tip baz, mind you the size of the tip is dependent on the barmaids looks and body shape, a bit sexist i suppose but i seen it as a reward for looking after themselves.. :)

30.) 28 Mar 2023 15:20:12
How did I forget figo? To be fair I also forgot a lot of the arsenal and United legends.

Henry, viera, petit, pires, tony Adams, Roy Keane, Giggs, Yorke, cole, del piero, nedved, trezeguet, jay jay okocha

Anyone for anymore? What an era of football.

31.) 28 Mar 2023 15:21:48
In reply to Gaga's first post - have you watched/ listened to Diamond Lights? Clearly there were some strong substances involved ergo characters!

32.) 28 Mar 2023 15:32:41
If Ed025 is REALLY impressed, he pushes on beyond the tip.

{Ed025's Note - maybe years ago zed.. :)

33.) 28 Mar 2023 22:30:59
Agree if you have someone with Hoddles talent then pick a team that accommodates him. Think his talent as a player was his downfall as a manager. He expected lesser players to do the things he could do. Still not a character though.

34.) 29 Mar 2023 14:54:07
Gaga, Diamond Lights? Eileen Drewery? That’s definitely character full. A different character to Gazza, granted, but still a bit outside of the ‘normal’ imo.

05 Mar 2023 07:52:52
What's happening with carvalho eds? Is he well thought or not cracking on. I thought he started the season well enough, bit lightweight, but looked OK.
Cheers in advance.

madmax

{Ed001's Note - he just needs time.}

1.) 05 Mar 2023 08:30:30
Fair enough. Good to hear. Let's hope he cracks on. he's still very young.

{Ed001's Note - exactly and it is still not entirely clear what his best position is.}

2.) 05 Mar 2023 08:37:36
ED02 said he has not progressed as much as they had hoped which baffling judging by the shambles we have been and the inability for them to fund him the best position for him to progress at least in the short term. As Ed01 said, Fab C just needs more time. He’s still new at this level.

3.) 05 Mar 2023 08:58:07
I always thought he would of been a firmino understudy.

4.) 05 Mar 2023 08:59:01
With respect to Ed002, I’m not sure I believe his comment about Carvalho’s progress. How could the club have hoped for more progress given the generally poor level we’ve shown throughout this season? The club may have hoped he’d become a regular starter quickly, but that just means their expectations were too high.

5.) 05 Mar 2023 09:33:16
LoweLFC. ED02 mentioned it. It’s strange cos I get what you’re saying BUT that’s what he said.

6.) 05 Mar 2023 11:29:23
Any thoughts on Jones’ progress Ed001? I have no idea what we should do with him now, it seems Klopp doesn’t trust him but I refuse to believe he is worse than some of our other options.

{Ed001's Note - he just needs to stay fit before we can judge him.}

26 Dec 2022 22:45:30
Just a shout out to akira, who I'm sure mentioned gakpo about 4 weeks ago. Fair play man. Never doubted you.

madmax

1.) 27 Dec 2022 00:23:33
Akira is getting a good record to be fair to him/ her.

Who's the midfielder then Akira? And are we getting him in Jan?

And the main thing is that fsg are still supporting transfers in Jan. That's really positive. Hope for a CM yet.

2.) 27 Dec 2022 00:25:47
Sorry just seen this and posted similar beforehand, credit where credits due to both of you. Merry xmas!

02 Oct 2022 09:19:08
"Making a mountain out of a mole hill" springs to mind.
Get rid of klopp, lack of Ivestments, players to old, to much loyalty. Get a grip people, we still have a boss team and manager, this is our rough patch now,

madmax

{Ed025's Note - I don’t think anyone is calling for klopps head max. But supporters are rightfully concerned about the way the season has started mate. Being an ostrich and just expecting things will get better is not the way to go either imo..

1.) 02 Oct 2022 09:45:59
“Boss team”. We are definitely not watching the same side. There’s nothing boss about us at the moment.

2.) 02 Oct 2022 10:25:45
Not so sure about that Madmax if I'm honest. The midfield is certainly having an impact on our overall performance.
I will be honest enough to say that I would be more than happy to get top four this season, as long as we get CL football for next season. In the hope ? we can sort our midfield issues this coming Summer.

3.) 02 Oct 2022 11:07:22
Madmax, there is not one sensible person calling for klopp to be sacked, but we’re well within our rights as fans to be calling out the performances and lack of effort and desire from certain players.

It’s ok to be out of form and I haven’t got a problem with losing or drawing matches when all 11 players work hard and put in a shift but when I see players jogging around the pitch and pulling out of tackles I think I have every right to be upset and call them out!

My take on the alonso comes down to one thing. How easy does he want it.
If he goes to bayern, he's gona clean up pretty easy, it's like why Rodgers went to celtic, pretty much guaranteed success.
At least at Liverpool a bit more effort is needed, and it's a better achievement when done.
