As an aussie living in Sydney I'm really excited to see Markus Babbel coach WSW! Good luck to him.

On VAR: An opener has just been allowed in the A-league GF where a player was clearly offside. Just goes to show what ed001 says VAR is useless if the officials are clowns.

{Ed001's Note - it is like any tool, it is only as good as the operator.}

Just like having 5 referees for CL matches and the standard of refereeing is still not any better.

The systems, technology can only be as good as the people performing the tasks.

2.) 05 May 2018 12:14:05
I’m not in favour of VAR or five officials. Two linesmen and one ref is enough. Train them properly and make the rules less ambiguous. That’s what’s needed.

3.) 05 May 2018 12:28:58
Should have kept all technology of football, keeps debates going for years. Like the Luis Garcia ghost goal which probably didn't go in 😉.

4.) 05 May 2018 12:45:37
I really think with screens the crowd can be part of what’s going on. It’s the one thing i've said again and again. There’s no point in having var if the fans are sitting there clueless.

5.) 05 May 2018 13:01:58
I was in line with the goalie at the top of the centenary stand, it was in by a comfy distance (more than Brighton’s one last night! )

6.) 05 May 2018 13:02:30
Meant goal line. spellcheck 🤬.

7.) 05 May 2018 13:26:40
How very dare you Hugh, or should I say Jose!

8.) 05 May 2018 13:58:47
That was so bad, was watching it live. Melbourne victory very lucky to win that. How was Roy O'Donovans head kick on the keeper in the last minute? Surely he'll be on a 8-10 week holiday early next season!

9.) 05 May 2018 18:08:22
Ed is correct. A tool is only as good as it's operator. I remember when goal line tech. was being debated and many people were saying it would never work and it was time wasting. How's that working out now? It works to perfection. Why? Cos people wanted it to work and made it work. VAR could be the same, IMO.

Like the NFL, VAR is used only in specific situations where a touchdown is scored or when there is a play that decides a change of possession from one team to the other (fumble, fumble recovery, interception QB sack etc) . All the coaches and players and fans, know what the rules are so no one can be all disingenuous about it. Does it fix everything? No. Does it fix almost everything? YES easily at 90 -95 percent.

On a VAR review, the Umpire (head ref) has 30 seconds to review the play and all the replay angles he sees, is available to fans on the video scoreboard and those watching at home so again, no funny business. The system works cos people want it to work. VAR CAN work if everyone approaches it in good faith. Good luck with that, unfortunately.

Hugh does it matter if it went in or not? I ask that because if the goal wasn't giving the ref said after the match that if he didn't award the goal then a penalty would of been giving with the goal keeper receiving a red card. Chelsea would of played nearly the whole game with ten men so the ref did Chelski a favour and a chance to win the tie still. Altho mourine would say different.

I was having a read through the comments section of the LFC facebook (always a mistake) and couldn't help but have a laugh at someone who said that we need VvD to marshall our defence. All I could think of was ed1's assessment of him earlier in the season.

As an Aussie fan I'm pretty happy with the 12:30 kick off. Makes it a watchable time here.

Can't see that happening. Athletico couldn't bring in a replacement.

It was very similar to Virgil's tackle on Sane in the first game against them. Both got yellow and I think that's fair.

That was wonderful thanks ed! Made a royal mockery of PNE.

{Ed001's Note - did anyone get the word it made up though?}
