Ed001

This current team is probably the greatest of my lifetime. I was wondering if you could do an article comparing the current squad against the best of the past. Dalglish and sourness etc. Interested to see your thoughts.

Thanks in advance.

Yorkshire Red

{Ed001's Note - I have added that idea to my to do list. I am going to have to give it some real thought as it certainly deserves to be compared, at the very least.}

1.) 04 Jan 2020 18:46:35
thanks mate.

That to do list is that big of yours that we might be multiple premier league winners by time you get round to it! Ha.

{Ed001's Note - I did think that when I was scrolling down for an hour to reach the bottom to add your idea to it! I am working on a couple of the articles from it now, but it does seem to grow much faster than I can do them.}

2.) 04 Jan 2020 20:35:47
Not an expert but I think it’s different to quantify, the game has significantly moved on since Kenny and Souness walked out under the famous, This Is Anfield sign.

The one difference at the moment is the fact that the team of the 80’s won the league a significant amount of times, along with the European cup. With they in mind, this team has a way to go in my opinion.

3.) 04 Jan 2020 21:09:09
Totally agree Drogie, this current team are playing catch up even before we can seriously compare the two era's ⚽️✌.

4.) 04 Jan 2020 21:10:35
Spot on Drogie. We ave all waited so long, and many younger fans have never experianced the joy of winning the title. The football we are playing is a joy to watch but if memory serves me right we finished 1st or 2nd in 17 out of eighteen consecutive seasons in the 70' and 80's. 1980 was the year we finished 5th.

I know its a long time ago but theses teams also won 4 european titles etc etc.

This team has along way to go to in my humble opinion.

5.) 04 Jan 2020 23:22:39
The game has changed so much too. From lack of back passing, less physicality, better pitches, etc.

It was so physical back in the day and the flair players had lumps kicked out of them. (anybody remember Ginny Jones first challenge in the cup final) .

Great debate, over a few jars, but in my eyes it's only fair to compare how great the teams are / were in relation to the very best in world football at the time.

The 80s team ruled for years, we can only hope this generation might.

6.) 05 Jan 2020 02:45:08
You’re talking about an era when physical fitness was not part of their job.
This team would wipe the floor with any team that’s ever been before.

{Ed001's Note - that's not true. They were physically fit then too just a different kind of fitness. They were much tougher for starters.}

7.) 05 Jan 2020 09:08:18
For those that were around in the 70’s and 80’s glory years how did the successful teams play then? Were they a relentless machine like this team are? Did they smash a lot of the teams they faced? What was the general level of the teams in the league.

8.) 05 Jan 2020 11:02:09
The team that had Barnes and Beardsley were a joy to watch. For me the best footballing team I have seen. The early 80's teams were so dominant, passed you to death, difficult to get the ball off. This team is relentless, tough and then explosive when the time is right but as some posters have said, so difficult to choose. We have had some great teams over the years, that's for sure.

9.) 05 Jan 2020 11:49:12
For me it depends in which era we played the match. VAR would destroy Souness and Tommy Smith.

10.) 05 Jan 2020 11:51:52
Personally, there’s a distinction between the various teams and the football that they played.
All of the teams from 1973 - 1990 were dominant at home and abroad, though the European ban post-1985 probably cost the club another European Cup or two.
Their continued success was remarkable but it was in essence a method from the blueprint set out by Shankly and the Boot Room staff. Each successive manager continued this method.
The teams were so dominant that 2nd place truly was seen as a failure. This was at a time when English football teams were very successful in European club competition too, so there’s no doubt that Liverpool then were the best team in Europe. That barometer was lost after 1985 and it was harmful to the club in the longer term.
In my opinion the best team we’ve had was the 78 - 84 team we’ve had but the current team are posting numbers that outdo even that side.

The football now is fantastic, possession based when required but dynamic on the counter at any given opportunity. As a collective, it is the fastest team I’ve ever seen.
The pitches are better and the law rules have changed to give a cleaner, quicker game now. The current team are extremely attack minded, home and away, and in Europe too. The mindset is more positive than that of past teams when a boring draw away in Europe was seen as a successful result. The football of Kenny’s late 80s side was the culmination of over 12 years development to a possession- based style also, that team rarely took a direct corner kick and the ball was invariably played out from the back from the keeper. It’s a real shame that we didn’t get to see it in Europe. But the speed and dynamism of the current team plays football that the whole of Europe and the World are envious of, and is the most attractive I’ve seen from a Liverpool side.

11.) 05 Jan 2020 16:12:22
Excuse my ignorance but didn’t we used to go a goal up and back pass to our goalkeeper for the rest of the game?

12.) 05 Jan 2020 19:31:47
I believe our European away games were like that a lot.

13.) 05 Jan 2020 22:29:44
If this group win 4 or 5 please and another ucl perhaps, the odd fa Cup. I think they have to be considered the best. The intensity of this group is second to none. Liverpool, Madrid, bayern whoever. I've never seen a team so focused.

Jordan Henderson had a world class year.

Afternoon red men.

I’ve managed to score some tickets to the first game of the season against and travelling in from Leeds in the car. If it’s possible I wonder if any regulars could recommend some good places to park. Don’t mind having a walk in or out. Probably would prefer to have an easy run out and maybe not get had for cost of parking.

Thanks in advance.

And forgot about Brewster.

Hardly in desperate need on the forward front with Firmino, Origi, Brewster, Salah, Mane, Shaqiri and Wilson all in contention.

Ox and Wijnaldum can also play on the wing too. It really isn’t that bad when you look at it.

2.) 28 Jul 2019 16:09:44
Stick Townsend Rd in the sat nav mate. Get there early to bag the free parking, if not, it's about £10 parking around there, cash not card 👍🏻.

Ed001, with the signing of Alisson and his potential to be one of the greats. Are you concerned about Achterberg. With keepers never really improving under him. I know Alisson is a class above what we’ve had in recent years so here’s to hoping it’s because of the tools he’s been working with haven’t been up to scratch.

Yorkshire Red

{Ed001's Note - it is always a concern, but Alisson is good enough that it might not matter.}

1.) 20 Jul 2018 11:04:27
Thanks for the reply mate. Hopefully we’ve finally got another great. I haven’t been blessed in my time. My earliest memory of keepers is westerveld! I’m sure he’s going to be better than him.

Ed1 just for fun.
When we sign a player you'll express your opinion on wether it will work and be good for the club. For example the likes of benteke been lazy and not a good fit. All the while I'm sure you get behind him and hope to be proved wrong. So I was just wondering have you ever been proved wrong?

Yorkshire Red

{Ed001's Note - many many times. Benayoun is one that stands out in my mind as a player I misjudged. He was much better than I realised. It is a lot easier to see more of the players now though, whereas back then I was judging players purely on having seen them at Anfield and MOTD. Nowadays I make sure to watch a number of full matches of a player before I make a judgement.}

Most pro's are good it's all circumstantial. YB was great but.

2.) 23 Feb 2017 01:30:53
Oops sorry late night drunk apologies.

3.) 23 Feb 2017 11:23:35
A lot of people are slating Can, I think he'll turn good.

4.) 23 Feb 2017 12:07:19
Drunk on a Wednesday? Lucky you. My Mrs Would cut them off?

5.) 23 Feb 2017 13:24:58
Ed001, Matip can be another case? I think I remember you saying when he was signed that he was one for the squad but not a fixed starter.

{Ed001's Note - I said I never saw him play. He was one I didn't know anything about so gave no real judgement, just guessed mate. So no, can't count him as I never knew anything about him and said that. }

I would like to see us strengthen LB with Neil Taylor.
maybe pinch matt Ritchie from Newcastle as he is fantastic and will keep mane out of the side.
also if we offload balo benteke and maybe firmino we should look to steven Fletcher.
what do you think ed001?

Yorkshire Red

{Ed001's Note - hilarious.}

1.) 01 Jul 2016 10:01:39
Taylor was one mistake waiting to happen under Rodgers, thankfully he was injured and we didn't move on him.

2.) 01 Jul 2016 11:27:29
We should hijack the Ighalo bid. I'm sure £40mil will be enough to convince Watford to sell their world class striker.

3.) 01 Jul 2016 12:17:41
Must be a whind up post.

4.) 01 Jul 2016 12:27:12
Or wined up post!

5.) 01 Jul 2016 13:48:56
obviously a wind up. I know from been hooked on this site that the ed1 is not too fond of those players!

Hasn’t he mocked the people of Liverpool in the past?

Ed001, isn’t that a trait of the modern day defender these days?

Yorkshire Red

{Ed001's Note - not many as awful as him to be fair. Great on the ball but god awful as a defender and about as quick as an hour with Michael McIntyre. Well, maybe not as slow as that, as there is little worse than an hour with McIntyre. McIntyre is the comedy equivalent of a cheesegrater to the private parts.}

I'm interested to find out if he's good with the ball at his feet. I saw him almost completely miss the ball in one of the friendlies. I hope it was just a one off ha.
