Hey Eds and Reds,

A little late but here's my Danny Ward update after Sunday's game against Sheffield Wednesday.

Huddersfield, and Ward, suffered their first home defeat in the Championship this season as they went down 0-1 to finish the weekend 3rd in the table, outside of the automatic promotion spots on goal difference.

Before I begin Ward's performance review, it's worth noting that after 12 league games, he and his club boast a defence that no side in the division have conceded fewer goals than, so that's a major plus note for Ward as he has played every game so far.

Onto his performance, in a game that was not too dissimilar to Liverpool's against Man Utd last night. Sheff Weds came to stifle Wagner's creative, energetic side just as Mourinho did on Red Monday. Except a second half penalty saw the Owls nick a win.

That meant that, ultimately, Ward had little to do over the 90 minutes in terms of saves. He was helpless for Forestieri's well-placed penalty kick winner. Ward dived the wrong way but the Wednesday man dummied his kick well.

Aside that, Ward was beaten on one other occasion by Forestieri, as Town's defence was beaten by a simple long ball which Forestieri brought down. Ward came out to close him down but was chipped. The post came to his rescue. Truthfully it was a clever strike and it would be harsh to blame Ward. He came out well enough and made himself big. Really he caused Forestieri to miss the chance.

Other than that, he had no other meaningful shots to deal with. So onto his distribution.

His passing was largely short as Wagner wants his team to play out from the back. It was accurate and really without fault so nothing much to complain about there.

His command of the box was also good. He had one moment where he let a cross go over him but no danger ultimately came of it. He claimed crosses well and made an excellent sweeper keeper for a number of Sheff Weds' long balls forward, to which he was sharp and off his line to clear. This was his most impressive part of his performance.

One other slight blip was on one occasion when he came to close down a Wednesday attacker, he left himself a little stranded and almost allowed the opposition in for a chance.

Overall, he wasn't helped by Wednesday being capable of exploiting a sluggish centre back pairing for Town that on more than one occasion failed to deal with simple punts over the top. Ward had to be alert and concentrated for the whole game as Town had the vast majority of the ball and Wednesday had little territory near Ward's goal.

A disappointing result in the end but Ward was not to blame and he had a largely sound game. He continued to impress and he has said this week that he hopes to stake a claim in the Liverpool side going forward.

He's doing his chances little harm at Huddersfield, and hopefully he continues to avoid injury, maintain form and keep his place in the team. The experience he is gaining, in a side managed by a man who knows Klopp very well, will no doubt be invaluable for him.

Thanks Reid the Red. Watched the game as I have a soft spot for Huddersfield having worked there and attended a few games. Spot on with the review of the game. Nothing Danny Ward could of done with the penalty as it was well placed. Hoping they can have as good a season as we do, would be nice to se them in the premier, though financially they aren't as well set up as some of the competition.
YNWA.

2.) 19 Oct 2016 00:15:29
Thanks for the update Reid, hopefully he continues to impress and comes back to challenge for the No.1 spot next season.

3.) 19 Oct 2016 01:55:26
Thanks mate, sounds exciting that lad.

4.) 21 Oct 2016 00:56:35
Thanks mate for the very thorough update. One question - is he being used as a sweeper keeper (German style where the keeper positions himself further upfield) or as a traditional goalkeeper?

{Ed007's Note - Lasciate ogni speranza, voi ch'entrate.}

Hey Eds,

I have been reading quotes from Suso that says if he were to sign a new contract at LFC then he thinks it would be good for him to spend another year on loan at Almeria. Is this a possibility?

Thanks

Reid the Red

{Ed001's Note - yes. Almeria would love to keep him.}

Hey Eds,

I know there has been numerous questions on this of late but there has been little confirmed from you Eds so I'm going to ask again to see if there's been any update - have we bid for Diego Costa?

Thanks in advance {Ed002's Note - I am aware of interest but have no confirmation of a bid being made.}

A question for Ed002, if you have the time.

It seems an apt time to ask with Liverpool signing Virgil van Dijk for a well documented world-record fee for a defender, and of course with the next round of TV rights bidding coming up. Do you see this increased spending on transfer fees, wages, agents fees etc carrying on this upward curve?

We've seen Neymar move for an unprecedented fee, Mbappe as well when his transfer is made permanent in 2018, Liverpool have rejected humongous sums of money for Coutinho offered from Barcelona - surely this can't go on forever. Surely the TV deals will soon tail off and the fees stop increasing at the rate they seemingly are? Or will this trend just continue?

I'd love to hear your thoughts, Ed!

Thanks in advance - and a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all the Eds while I'm at it!

Reid the Red

{Ed002's Note - These are only a handful of players at a handful of clubs. The media money is just for the Premier League sides. The rest of the world carries on as normal.}

1.) 29 Dec 2017 18:44:23
Thank you for such a prompt response Ed. I suppose it is only the English sides that benefit from the Premier League bidding rights and then there's only the likes of PSG, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich who have as much financial backing outside of the English top flight. I just never thought I'd see the day Liverpool sold a player to Crystal Palace for over £30m (Benteke) and of course ourselves buy a player for £75m! We shall see if it carries on! It only felt like yesterday that spending £20-30m on a player seemed like a lot! Now it's common place in the Premier League!

{Ed002's Note - Media income for the PL is far more than anywhere else. Barcelona and Real Madrid get less than the leading clubs. The clubs you mention in relation of financial backing earn their money from elsewhere. Eventually the whole thing may be levelled for the majority by the “elite” clubs breaking away.}

Pressed send too early in my Mignolet post! I'll finish off here instead.

I was saying that I hate having a pop at a Liverpool player because I firmly believe that it is vital that the supporters get behind the players, else they simply have too much pressure on them.

But if Klopp sticks with Mignolet, then it just isn't right. I'm sorry, but other teams will be laughing at us.

Loris Karius has played 6 times this season, conceded just 5 goals and kept two clean sheets. Danny Ward has been given just one chance this season in a makeshift EFL Cup side despite being a pivotal part of Huddersfield's promotion winning side last season.

Neither of them could possibly be worse than Mignolet. Not even possibly. Even if they tried, they couldn't breed less confidence than Mignolet does.

That's all I'm going to say. Frankly, the players in front of Mignolet don't trust him and don't have a clue about what he will decide to do at any point in a game. It doesn't help and it can't go on.

Please Klopp. Enough is enough.

Reid the Red

1.) 22 Oct 2017 23:27:57
Karius has conceded three goals (one of which was arguably his fault) and kept 2 clean sheets in 5 games and Ward has played once conceded 2 gals, none of which were his fault. Migs has conceded a hatfull with at least 6 of them being his fault (not counting the countless mistakes that did not lead to goals) in the PL. Over to you, Klopp.

{Ed025's Note - you have said it for a long time bingo, but then you defend klopp to the hilt mate.., i love klopp but he does have his failings like most managers..

2.) 23 Oct 2017 01:15:20
No Ed025, Klopp does not have some failings. His entire LFC tenure will be a big massive failure if we don't get top4. His record is worse than Brendan's right now, and that's just embarrassing. Playing attractive football and going nowhere is not the hallmark of a LFC manager, its about winning trophies. Klopp does not have what it takes to take us there. I would get rid in the summer personally. I have seen nothing and I doubt anything will change anytime soon to make me doubt what I just said.

{Ed025's Note - he should have addressed the keeper and CH problems by now i agree IB, the rest of it is good though and even when 4-1 down the players never let their heads drop and battled to the end mate..

22 Oct 2017 22:42:47
My two cents. I don't often post, particularly after a game. But today I will.

Anyone can lose to Tottenham. Even Real Madrid, who've dominated in Europe in recent years, couldn't beat them in their own back yard.

So I'm not overly disappointed with the result. I hate to lose as much as the next supporter, but I also understand that we have 29 Premier League games remaining; 87 points still to play for. Nothing has yet been decided. We move on.

Ultimately, I, like Ed001, trust that Jürgen Klopp can build us a side, a squad, a team capable of challenging for titles and indeed winning them.

But I will not be impressed should he dare to play Simon Mignolet again. I mean that. It would show weak management to stick with him now.

To win titles, we need a high-class GK - you look at every title-winning team in England and Europe and they have a reliable GK between the sticks.

What we have is a GK who couldn't decide where to be for Tottenham's first goal, could have done better for their second, completely failed with simple communication for the third and flapped at a cross for the fourth.

Genuinely, had we had a David De Gea or a Gigi Buffon today, we could have got a point or even three. I believe that. In fact, if we could have swapped GKs with Spurs at the start of the game, we'd have won.

I hate slating players. I agree with Ed002 that we Liverpool supporters struggle to do just that and support our players.

Reid the Red

1.) 22 Oct 2017 23:04:47
Whilst I agree that migs had a mare today, he's not the reason we lost. Spurs were better all over the park. Don't make one player a scapegoat for the failings of the team.

{Ed025's Note - i will have that putney, but he is one of the usual suspects mate..

2.) 22 Oct 2017 23:26:18
Have to agree. Migs has had plenty chances and time to give someone else a proper chance. Imo ward should get a good run see what he's made of. He was at Aberdeen a team I follow and was brilliant every fan was gutted when he was recalled. You just look at difference today when Lloris was called into action late on at 4.1 he pushes coutinho shot onto bar then smart save with feet from salah. Had that been other end it would be 4.3 and we would be panic stations for last 10mins.

3.) 22 Oct 2017 23:31:53
You may be right, Putney BUT as many have mentioned on here, if your GK is crap and puts the fear of our Lord into his backline as they never seem to know what he will do or if he will get to a ball when he comes for it, then it almost does not matter who you have in front of him. Spurs were great BUT the result is murky as we gifted them all 4 goals. That is the problem. Like the OP, if Klopp plays Migs again then he is really setting himself up form failure this year. We have probs in this team so why not proceed by elimination and fix the ones we can fix now. Over to you, Klopp.

{Ed025's Note - they are fair points bingo mate..

4.) 23 Oct 2017 00:25:10
Bingo, you're assuming a problem will be fixed by dropping Migs but you never seem to consider how bad Karius and ward have to be to be behind him in the pecking order.

5.) 23 Oct 2017 00:47:14
Maybe Ward and Karius aren't better than Mignolet that's why he is playing week in week out.

Cannot tell you how much I'm looking forward to reading Ed001's match report after that match! 👏👏👏😁.

Reid the Red

{Ed001's Note - I will probably leave it until the morning so I can calm down a bit first. Give me a chance to look again at how Arsenal played and get a bit more balance.}

1.) 27 Aug 2017 18:28:37
Ed1 it’s going to take a few weeks to calm down after that game. (Deja vu from last season with this thread too) 😂.

{Ed001's Note - good point.}

2.) 27 Aug 2017 18:44:20
Buzzing! . and how was playing left Back? It wasn't Moreno. this Guy could tackle!

3.) 27 Aug 2017 19:37:43
How is the new Moreno😁.

Away from all this Coutinho talk, have you and #WonderDogSparky decided on the team for tomorrow's game at Watford yet Ed002?

Reid the Red

{Ed002's Note - Everyone will run very quickly after the Watford player with the ball.}

1.) 11 Aug 2017 20:40:29
we will need every point this season, I have just today lost that bit of excitement that I had, hope that I can get it back .

That is indeed me. It's calculated via a number of methods - form, head-to-head record, home/ away records etc, and it of course changes as the game goes on based on time remaining, the way the game is going (obviously a team's chance of winning increases after they score but also things like possession, shots etc do affect it), even a team's record late on in matches (do they score or concede a lot of late goals? ) .

I don't know exactly how this is all calculated but like Ed001 says, take it with a pinch of salt. It's just meant as a bit of fun to say, historically/ statistically speaking, the current likelihood of a team getting a result. You can't predict football or any sport for that matter, so it's just a rough guide.

Reid the Red

{Ed0666's Note - the only thing I can confidently predict in a world full of nuances and anomalies is that Eds 001 will never be a 32 inch waist again.

40 apps between Sturridge/ Origi but only 11 starts.

I think we could afford to sell one and use Brewster instead, particularly if a Brandt-type player were to come in and bolster our attacking options.

Great review Ed, well summarised.

Are you really that worried over Salah/ Milner’s penalty spat, though? I understand Salah was clearly annoyed by it at the time and apparently he just left the pitch straight down the tunnel at full time but they’re grown men with bigger fish to fry. Surely they can get over it and it’s will be forgotten about, if it hasn’t already.

In a way it’s good to see Salah wanting to score and take responsibility. We won the match, we have 5 huge games left this season, I’m sure by the time the Huddersfield game comes around he’ll be raring to go again.

Reid the Red

{Ed001's Note - I don't know Salah does seem to be getting a bit big for his boots.}

I've just had a look in the Premier League era and this is the first time there's been more than two former Liverpool managers managing in the Premier League within the same season! That's as best I can look unfortunately.

Of course there has been two since last season with Hodgson and Benitez - before that there was last two in 2010-11, Houllier and Hodgson - Houllier was at Villa, Roy at WBA, but Benitez wasn't managing a PL side then and Dalglish was our manager, so couldn't class him as a former boss!
