Morning Eds and Reds,

I've been told by a German friend of mine that a handful of English clubs have scouted Noah Atubolu, 21yr old Freiburg GK, this season. With Liverpool being one of them.

I can't see that it makes much sense as he has just cemented his place as 1st choice there and would likely not want to leave to be second fiddle to Allison, even if Kelleher were to leave.

Are you aware of anything Eds?

RedDawn

{Ed001's Note - no but the club is going to scout good players, it doesn't mean anything.}

1.) 20 Feb 2024 18:14:10
I'm sure that clubs scout some players for years before deciding to make a move for them. I don't know why this would be confusing to you.

Afternoon Eds,

What an absolute mess the last week or so has been for us Liverpool fans. Hope you're not receiving too much abuse etc.

I have been told 3/ 4 names I don't think we've seen on this board, from someone who has occasionally got things right in the past (no involvement with the club whatsoever so I'm not suggesting he's an insider) . These are apparently players that Liverpool are known to have been scouting/ considering a lot this summer, whether for an immediate transfer or as ones to keep an eye on.

Wonder if you could tell me if you've heard anything on them.

Hincapie. 21 yr old CB (and occasional LB) from Leverkusen.

Zubimendi - 24 yr old CDM from Real Sociedad

Taylor - 21yr old CM/ CDM from Ajax

He also suggested that we were interested in Alan Varela but that a move to Porto was always likely and I think this has now been confirmed in any event.

Finally, and this might make us Liverpool fans raise a collective eyebrow, but we have apparently had a look at Pascal Struijk from Leeds as a left footed CB, in the event that we lose a CB or 2.

As I've said, this guy has got things right in the past but also been way wide of the mark too, so I won't put too much weight on any of these unless the Eds do confirm.

Cheers in advance and thanks for all the hard work keeping the site going!

RedDawn

{Ed002's Note - Piero Hincapie (CB) I cannot see any interest of Nottingham Forest going anywhere - an option for West Ham. Scouted and rejected by Spurs, Probably not good enough to be a starter in the Premier League just yet. Tapsoba is likely leaving which means Bayer Leverkusen may hand on to him.
Martin Zubimendi (CM/DM) Barcelona may still look to an offer although they are looking at preferred options first and would likely want to include a player in any deal to compensate for the €60M price. Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea have sent scouts with Arsenal and Chelsea declaring an interest with his club but both have since moved on to buy their preferred options. Real Sociedad may look to refusing a transfer unless his buy out clause is met in full.
Kenneth Taylor (CM/DM) Manchester United enquired after Taylor in January who EtH thinks has a very good future. Their approaches were refused knowing Alvarez would depart and Ajax were already a player light. Won't be for sale.

Alan Varela is not quite a Porto player yet.

I am not aware of Liverpool making any approach for Pascal Struijk.}

Long time reader of the site, only occasional contributor. Howz Harry doing? Anyone heard from him?

Anyway, been having a think about our situation this summer. I know lots of us are crying out for a big rebuild but I am not sure that it is required. We showed towards the end of the season that we still have all the qualities to compete, the thing we're lacking is reliable backups and options when we need to change things up. So this is how I see it re transfers etc

GKs

We have the best GK in the business in my opinion, and he isn't losing his place any time soon.

Kelleher - Clearly too good to be a backup and I really feel for him. Klopp seems insistent on keeping him and I can see why, he's the best No2 in the league imo. Is there any chance of a season or 2 out on loan like Courtois had at Atleti? Cech was about the same age as Allison is when Courtois went on loan. He deserves to be first choice somewhere, but it would be a shame to lose him completely.

Adrian - Seems like a great guy and by all accounts lovely to have in the dressing room. Plenty of clubs now have this older 3rd keeper (Carson at City for example), so it makes sense. But, he is using up a foreign player spot and that seems like a waste to me. Happy for him to stay, but would rather he were English to free up a spot.

Defenders

I don't think we need a massive overhaul here. We need effective competition for Robbo so if Tsimi were to leave he should be replaced. And we need to start looking at the future without VVD. He has fallen off a cliff in terms of his performances (as often happens after such a serious injury), and if he doesn't get back to his previous levels he can't be a long term option imo.

Timber - For me this would be a really shrewd signing. A CB who has also played very well at RB, would provide proper competition to VVD and Konate, and would be the perfect player to have in the squad if we want to experiment with TAA pushing up into midfield as well. With Matip likely leaving (or at least being injured for half the season as normal), he would get plenty of games and his existing relationship with VVD/ Gakpo would help him integrate with the squad. This one makes sense to me, wouldn't break the bank like Gvardiol and would give TAA much needed cover at RB. Makes a lot of sense.

Inacio - This guy will be a star. But would expect to go straight into the team and I don't think we can offer that right now. VVD deserves another season and Konate is really starting to kick on and become a really solid player. Much like Gvardiol I don't see where another guaranteed 1st choice CB fits without causing issues.

Midfielders

We clearly need new midfielders. But I don't think we desperately need 3, especially if we are going to look at pushing TAA further forward more often next season. If we were to get a Defender like Timber then I think 2 midfielders would be sufficient. We have to remember that Curtis Jones is still a Liverpool player and played some excellent football towards the end of the season. With Harvey Elliot still here too and with Bajcetic coming back from injury I think throwing a load of new midfielders in would block their development and not add much to the quality of the first 11.

Mac Allister - Seems to be pretty much done (As I was writing this it's been confirmed and what a bargain) and I think this is a very good signing. I had originally thought that he was an attacking midfielder and I was wondering where he would fit but as the rumours grew I watched him a bit more and he actually looks more like a proper box-to-box midfielder. He's high energy and covers a lot of ground. He doesn't have huge pace and isn't going to fly past players but he's clever, skillful and puts a shift in defensively as well. Will be a very useful player for us and I see him playing a big part next season.

Kone/ Thuram - These 2 seem to be doing the rounds as options. I must admit I haven't seen much of either but for me Thuram really stands out as potentially a great player. Very raw at the moment and will need time to settle I think, but looks the real deal. If the prices being quoted for him are about right then I think he would be a very good signing.

Gabri Veiga - Looks an excellent player but I suspect that we are likely going to priced out due to the sheer number of clubs who consider him an option. Would be a good signing, but we don't want to get into a bidding war and much like Tchouameni last season I suspect the bright lights will pull him elsewhere. If everyone else pulls out and we haven't signed anyone else then he'd be a good shout.

Lavia - Not a huge number of links here (The Athletic have suggested it) but I think he would be an excellent signing. Only 19 years old, has had a full season in the Prem where he looked head and shoulders above most of his teammates (albeit they were terrible) . Would be relatively cheap and has huge potential in my view.

Mac Allister and 1 other looks most likely (Unless Thiago leaves) and frankly if I was going to pick it would probably be Thuram. If we have the cash then Lavia in addition, potentially with a loan out, would be great, but as much as I think Lavia will be a top player, Thuram looks more ready to me.
Ideal world we would get Mac Allister, Thuram and Lavia (and combined they'd cost less than Bellingham. don't shout at me re money talk Ed002)

Forwards

Unless Jota leaves I don't think we need any forwards this summer. Gakpo has looked excellent and now has a full pre season as well. Nunez should hopefully kick on and start showing his obvious potential, and with Diaz back from injury I think a front 5 of Salah, Diaz, Nunez, Gakpo and Jota is really very strong. Especially when you consider that we have Carvalho (unless he leaves) and also Elliot who can play there if desperate, and some good youngsters that will likely need some game time.

If Jota were to leave then I don't really know where we'd look, there doesn't seem to be anyone available at the moment who would be a good fit. Perhaps Marcus Thuram? But the lack of any obvious replacement and the fact that previous interest seems to have moved on means I think Jota will stay, and I'm fine with that.

So there's my view on it all. I don't think we need a total ground up rebuild as some people have suggested. 3 quality signings would be sufficient in my view.

If we were to get Mac Allister, 1 other midfielder and a versatile defender then I think that would be a good window. Anything more than that would be a great window.

Have an excellent summer fellow Reds, enjoy the sunshine!

If liverpool go into season with konate, vvd, matip and gomez they will struggle again. Need a top cb with pace. Vvd doesn't look the same still a great cb. Konate injury prone. Matip doesn't have the pace to cover for trent if they play new system and gomez is a liability.

{Ed002's Note - Koumetio and Quansah are well liked.}

2.) 07 Jun 2023 15:11:12
Good summary but I disagree on the midfield issue. We need 3 midfielders not 2. Baj will still get plenty of minutes even if we sign 3 players in the middle of the park. As for Fabinho he has regressed so bad it’s almost beyond comprehension. Over the whole season if you take 15 of his tackles in a match he will foul his man 14 times and the 1 time he wins the ball it’s not even a clean tackle. That’s to say he even wins the ball in a match. He is also 3 or 4 seconds slower to react than the opposition or anyone around him and always looks like he is running in led boots. Been a great servant but time to be ruthless and get rid. That’s not to mention his wages, which if some don’t know currently sees him as joint 4th with Trent at £180k per week. Or we can make the same mistake Edwards and Klopp have done by keeping him until his contract runs out and receive absolutely no transfer fee.

Thiago is a class player but let’s all be real here. He is injured all the time and it’s not like those injuries are 1 big or small injury in a campaign, it’s multiple injuries throughout the season. He is also on £200k per week so for the number of injuries and wages he is on, does it make any business or footballing sense keeping him? Or, we can keep him another season until his contract runs out and repeat our past mistakes by receiving no transfer fee. Would rather sell him at a cut price and move his wages off our books and bring in a midfielder who will be available for most of the season but also suits our style of play. Then there is Hendo our captain and what a captain he’s been and still is. I love the guy but he is not the same player. Seeing as Milner has departed Hendo should take up that role of only being a bit part player.

At some point players have to move on and the squad needs to be refreshed. This should have been done progressively over the last few years. But now that it’s all come to a head despite the clear warning signs, we are having to do it in one window. That in itself is staggering and also slightly alarming for a club our size. Personally speaking I would go and get both Thuram and Kone also alongside Mac Allister then focus on bringing in defenders. That would see us going into the new season with Mac Allister, Thuram, Kone, Baj, Jones and Henderson which should be enough when you consider we can also bring Trent into the middle of the park if needs be making it 7 midfielders. Having said that Trent is practically playing there with this new system despite on paper playing at right back but you get what I mean.

As for the defenders Kostas should be sold. Lovely guy but I have zero confidence with him being out starting left back for a prolonged period of time if Robertson was to suffer a serious injury. Even more so that our shape at the back transitions into a back 3. Sell, raise some funds and find a young player that is comfortable playing both left back and centre back. Apparently there is no chance of it happening but the guy that fits the bill to a tee is Gvardiol. Again, I know his signing is not happening but he would allow us to phase out VVD and phase in Owen Beck at the same time as an understudy to Robertson. Two bird with one stone, which is even more baffling, especially with RBL interest in Carvalho that we are not looking into the possibility of seeing if we can make a transfer work. Anyways, we need a right sided defender as well that is comfortable playing both right back and right centre back. Those 3 signings in the middle of the back in addition to the 2 at the back would see us challenging again. I do have a feeling Jorg Schmadtke will get it right and I’m excited to see how this summer plays out.

3.) 07 Jun 2023 15:19:40
Red Dawn - good to see you dipping your toes into posting.

Agree with a lot of that, a good assessment of the squad ??

Don’t know much about Timber but a Centre back that can also cover fullback and is pacy would be useful based on our shape towards the end of the season.

4.) 07 Jun 2023 15:38:54
A ready-made CB would be nice but I have a feeling one of the young fellas will step up if we don't get any CB signings.

5.) 07 Jun 2023 15:46:27
I like Quansah from what I've seen.

6.) 07 Jun 2023 16:00:58
I stopped reading after:

'don't think we need a massive overhaul here'

SMH.

7.) 07 Jun 2023 18:02:37
It's just incredibly unrealistic to think that we're in a position to buy half a team of new players every summer Fandamonium.

If you'd read the rest of the post you'd have seen why thought that a total rebuild wasn't necessary.

3, possibly 4, players is the most we should expect, would fix the majority of our issues and is seemingly within the financial reach of the club.

How do you think the club should proceed this summer?

8.) 07 Jun 2023 17:27:29
Hello ed2. When u say koumetio and quansah well liked, do u mean by liverpool? as in 1st team material. Or well liked by other clubs who would b interested in loaning/ buying them?

{Ed002's Note - By their coaching staff and Ian Foster has spoken well of him.}

9.) 07 Jun 2023 18:28:21
Surely they'll replace rhys Williams and nat Phillips. I would imagine they'll bring a in a center back but I'm probably wrong.

10.) 07 Jun 2023 19:27:06
Welcome mate.
It’s possible, but I don’t see us drafting in this DOF fella In for 3 signings. One that’s already done.
Klopp quotes about being a very busy for him on the phone etc.
Milner gone, Keita gone, Ox gone, Thiago never fit, Jones never fit, Hendo run into ground, Fabinho run into ground, that Athur bloke whoever he was, Gone.
Bajcetic only 18. Elliot’s no midfielder.

Jurgan will not like being 5th at all, I won’t be surprised if we get 4 midfielders and he flogs a ton of players.

11.) 07 Jun 2023 20:25:37
RedDawn pal - all I meant was, if the OP doesn’t think our defence needs a proper look (overhaul) that is me done with reading. We have a watched the games - we couldn’t defend all season. Ideal world: Matip and Gomes (sorry ST) are replaced and Atleast one of the two replacements that is brought in is to to push and take VVDs spot if he carrys on how he has this year. Defence would be an equal priority to me, with midfield.

12.) 07 Jun 2023 22:22:17
@Fandamonium, if you only read half a book you only get half the story.

Anyway, imo when we decided on the way we wanted to play and the midfield actually started getting to grips with what we were doing our defence - with the exception of the last game of the season when neither side had anything to play for and mentally speaking looked like they had clocked off - looked a bit more solid and I think there was a reasonable fin of games where we didn’t concede a goal.

We have right and left back covered and three of VVD, Konate, Matip and Gomez will stay. Williams and Phillips should leave with Koumetio and Quansah, as mentioned by Ed02, being likely candidates to step up. What we seem to need is a predominantly left footed centre back to challenge VVD’s spot in the team.

The priority this window is to sort out the midfield. We have seen four mids leave already and there is a possibility that one of the established starters - Thiago, Fabs or even possibly Hendo (although I reckon he’ll have the “I’m the new Millie” t-shirt) losing at least four first team squad mids has to be addressed. We are lucky that Baj looks ready and that Curtis has started to show what he can actually do, which has probably saved us a possible £ 60 - 80m in not having to sign players, but after Mac Alister is officially confirmed by the club we definitely need another midfielder and probably a third midfield signing ready made to slot into the first team squad.

2, possibly 3, mids and a defender is probably just about financially do-able especially if, like seems to be the case with Alexis Mac, we only have to pay half of what the fans believe is the asking price. If we get it right in market d field then the defence becomes the priority in the Jan and July 24 windows.

13.) 07 Jun 2023 23:12:03
‘D field’ is code for ‘with the midfield’.

14.) 08 Jun 2023 00:29:45
I live in Brighton and there local club journo is saying 53m. I think the fee will be undisclosed Liverpool will say 35m Brighton will say 53m when it's really somewhere in the middle maybe 43 with add ons. Still a bargain. Get one maybe two more in there and a CB and we've had a great window. Sad about Jude but we need a whole Midfield not 1 superstar.

15.) 08 Jun 2023 04:59:20
Good post RedDawn and I share the same thoughts as you do. Without any further outgoings, 2 CMs and 1 CB should do nicely for us.

@Fandamonium, it depends on what you mean by 'overhaul'. For me, that would mean something like what Nottingham Forest did last season, where they literally bought an entirely new team. We don't need to do that. We just need to refresh the team to make it running again.

16.) 08 Jun 2023 06:29:47
@alonso1786, read your post, and I think you are agreeing rather to disagreeing with @reddawn.
You were talking abt how bad Fab has been, and how unreliable Thiago is.
Reddawn said, 2 is enough unless Thiago is sold.
You are suggesting that Thiago and Fab can be sold, in which case, Readdawn will say 3 is needed.

And @alonso1786, I am with you here. Totally.
I am disillusioned with both Thiago and Fab.
I would simply look at it from a commercial angle and sell whichever makes most sense.
And then we go for 3 midfield.

Look into both Kone and Thuram.
Both looks raw.

17.) 08 Jun 2023 10:34:10
Full time reader, occasional responder.

Good assessments going through this thread. Really enjoyed reading all of them.
I think two things happened -

1. Klopp was obviously too loyal to older players who were part of the squad and
2. This allowed other teams to catch up last season as a result of this.

I agree that, as a result, we need a complete midfield rebuild. Quality players are either too old, inexperienced or just stay on the treatment table -

Henderson, 32. Incredible captain but knackered.
Thiago, 32, Incredible passer but always injured and age is a factor
Fabinho, 29, Looked a shadow of his former self for most of the last season.

I think Klopp's style of play and the demands it puts on players showed last season with the three above, and more.

Elliott has huge potential but the pressure can't be placed on his shoulders at just 20.

Mac Allister is a perfect fit for us and a bargain if reports on a c. £35m fee are to believed.

Thuram looks quality too, as does Kone. But where does that leave TAA? Surely a move into the middle is inevitable - he has all the right skills and his defending/ positional play leaves a lot to be desired at times.

For me, I'd move him into the middle, with Kone and Mac with the thought of using Ramsey/ buying a right back.

18.) 08 Jun 2023 10:51:15
Nice one, RedDawg.

Disagree on Timber/ Inacio priority. A left sided centre back is needed more than a right sided one so I would make Inacio (or others like Colwill, Van Der Ven) as priority. Also, Timber is very small. Let someone else take a risk on that.

Slightly disagree on the number of midfielders but that is because I think Curtis and Elliott have had plenty of time to own a position in the team and Bajcetic is just a child that will need time to grow into his body. I would sign 3 and if one of Fab/ Thiago/ Hendo move on, then so be it.

19.) 08 Jun 2023 12:55:44
I see it like this : 8 midfielders like last season but refreshed and more balanced.

Mac Alister in for Henderson
Henderson in for Milner
Jones in for Oxlade Chamberlain
Bajcetic for Jones
Tchouameni in for Keita
Fabino
Thiago
Elliott
TAA - still RB but allowed more freedom

Calvalho - loan.

20.) 08 Jun 2023 02:23:01
Ed you mentioned Koumeito and Quansah as upcoming defenders. If I may ask what happened to Van Den Berg and Rhys Williams? Are they out of the picture entirely?

{Ed002's Note - Sepp van den Berg (CB) Another loan with Schalke 04 is possible as he won't get a chance at Liverpool.
Rhys Williams (CB) Will need to find a new home which will likely mean dropping down a tier.}

26 Apr 2022 13:38:53
Tchouameni rumours now doing the rounds that we have "made contact", whatever that means.

This is one I hope is actually true as I think he's an excellent player with huge potential. He can play in midfield, would be great cover/ rotation with Fabinho and would allow us to change systems a little easier with his ability to sit deep with another DM as well.

I'm sure Ed002 will tell us not to hold our breath but this one actually has me a little excited.

RedDawn

{Ed002's Note - I would not hold your breath.}

1.) 26 Apr 2022 14:16:22
Hahahaha walked right into that one Dawn mate

Have to agree though, really like the look of him.

2.) 26 Apr 2022 16:49:36
It’s crazy season again. Darwin Nunez Ed002? I keep seeing us being linked with the kid but I’m not sure he even fits after watching him live. Good player though all the same. Have we had a look since his Anfield visit?

{Ed002's Note - Try searching.

3.) 26 Apr 2022 22:07:18
Tchouameni to real along with mbappe, rudiger and edwards.

{Ed0666's Note - would Edwards get a game?

4.) 26 Apr 2022 22:24:21
Watching tonight 666, he'd play ahead of Courtois, Mendy, Militao, Alaba or Carvajal!

{Ed0666's Note - genius 😂

5.) 27 Apr 2022 08:50:52
Edwards would have the pants off of any of them without them even realising.
Ed re your comment regarding Tchouameni, is that because he is destined for elsewhere almost certainly?

{Ed002's Note - There are other clubs who have been speaking with Monaco - I am not aware of Liverpool speaking with Monaco.}

6.) 28 Apr 2022 07:33:30
Tchouameni, you never know. Diaz wasn't getting signed in Jan. Hendo and Milner are getting on. I think Klopp will get a CM in this summer.

03 Jun 2019 13:46:58
Afternoon all,

I know this is a random name but I have searched the posts and can't find anything.

A German friend of a friend has told me that Liverpool have been monitoring Timothy Chandler's return from injury and that he is seen as an option who could cover both RB and LB.

I'll be honest but he's someone i've never heard of before so seems to obscure to just be paper talk.

Any truth in this Eds?

Cheers in advance.

RedDawn

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware of any interest, and it would be enormously risky.}

Would be interested to hear some views on who we all think would be a "good" replacement for Salah if he were to be sold.

This is just a bit of fun and isn't a discussion about whether we should sell Salah, we've had plenty of those. But just who we think would come closest to his level for us.

For me there's probably only 3 that I would see as being a great replacement if we are to buy a forward rather than re-invest elsewhere.

Saka
Kvaratskhelia
Leao

And even 2 of those would require shifting positions around a little.

What does everyone else think? What's your view Ed001, I know you're very much in the "Don't sell Salah" camp.

RedDawn

{Ed001's Note - Bakayoko, Szoboszlai, Saka is all that I can think of right now. Actually no, there is also Mbappe obviously.}

1.) 06 Sep 2023 11:54:12
Tbh, I really like Saka. He's a great player, young, and always puts a shift in. An added bonus that he's HG as well. He's Arsenal through and through so would never join us but he is one of my favorite players from other teams.

2.) 06 Sep 2023 11:55:34
I'm sure Szobo would do well in the role but we've finally got an all action, skilful, goalscoring midfielder. Last thing I would want to do is move him to RW.

3.) 06 Sep 2023 11:56:00
Hello folks, I was going to hold off until Thursday has passed so the Salah talk can be parked, but I couldn't resist!

One other I would throw in to discuss would be Sane. He isn't a long term fix, like Saka or Bakayoko would be, but I wonder whether he and Szoboszlai could allow Doak the time to make the position his own?

4.) 06 Sep 2023 11:59:59
Controversial opinion but I would look at Bowen. Works his socks off and has a decent finish on him. Once you get over the fact there is no one capable of replacing him (left footed, RW goal scorer scoring 30+ a season) you’ve either got to change the fundamentals of our forward line or get a lesser player in a similar mould.

If we stick with the same way of playing, I’d get Bowen.

5.) 06 Sep 2023 12:14:31
Arda Guler was one that might have been interesting has we known about the Saudi league's ambitions 6-9 months earlier.

Same can be said of Bradley Barcola.

Karim Adeyemi is one that will be looking for a step up in the next year or two but perhaps he has his sights on Bayern.

Presumably, Nico Williams is still on our radar.

The ship has sailed on Saka. He's earning a fortune at Arsenal.

Don't know anything about Bakayoko yet.

PS Keep Salah.

{Ed002's Note - You are talking about players that Liverpool have no interest in with Guler, Barcola and Adeyemi. Liverpool have not shown interest in Saka and a club where were interested were chased off. Nico Williams were looked at but offers from two other sides were rejected in the summer and he will get a new contract. There has been interest in Bakayoko as I have explained.}

6.) 06 Sep 2023 12:16:14
Saka won’t be leaving arsenal in the next two years.

7.) 06 Sep 2023 12:03:07
Ed mate, I think there’s a reply from Ed002 that Klopp likes Sane, what do you think of him fitting in? Haven’t watched him after he moved in all honesty.

{Ed001's Note - I am not a big fan of his and he has attitude issues which is why he left City.}

8.) 06 Sep 2023 12:33:11
Another vote for Bowen. He's realistic, premiership proven, left footed, hard working and playing for a better team would up his numbers significantly. haven't seen much of johan bakayoko but he does look fast and tricky.

9.) 06 Sep 2023 12:38:54
I saw Guler, Barcola and Adeyemi on the spreadsheet, so there!

10.) 06 Sep 2023 13:40:09
Hi Ed001,
As you mentioned Mbappe, I see some of the newspapers are linking him with us again. Do you think there is any realistic chance of signing him, or will be be off to Real next summer? Cheers.

{Ed001's Note - I wish! This keeps coming up because he mentioned that his ma supports us and wants him to join us. I very much doubt we could even come close to affording his wages. You are talking about £40m+ a year on top of a transfer fee. And then there is bonuses etc. It is just not feasible.}

11.) 06 Sep 2023 14:02:46
Diaby.

Or move Dom to RW and TAA to midfield.

12.) 06 Sep 2023 14:34:04
Szoboszlai behind any two of our strikers!

13.) 06 Sep 2023 15:42:37
Cheers Ed001, can always live in hope that’s already earned enough money in his career already, or we just give him all the Salah cash!

14.) 06 Sep 2023 15:43:42
Another id throw into the ring would Chiesa. With the massive proviso that he has an injury free campaign and gets back to somewhere like the talent he looked pre injury.

Other than that, I think Bowen is a good shout.

15.) 06 Sep 2023 16:13:10
Given how much West Ham extracted from Arsenal for Rice then I expect they would want all the Salah proceeds for Bowen.

16.) 06 Sep 2023 17:11:25
I don't think Saka could replace Salah. he's good but nowhere near that level imo.

17.) 06 Sep 2023 17:39:53
Only issue with Bowen is he is 26, so by next summer any deal would have to make sense and I don’t think West Ham would let him go for anything reasonable.

Aside from the finances, I think he’s an excellent player and makes any squad and most 11’s stronger. Big big fan.

18.) 06 Sep 2023 20:22:24
Szoboszlai RW may not be a bad call. Rafa did the same with Stevie G and he scored something like 18 goals that season.
If he went to RW and we bought in, say someone like Valverde, into the midfield then we are looking really strong in terms of quality midfield options and we can also then look to continue to develop Doak whilst still being in a position l, financially, to make the necessary changes across the back 4 and at CDM.

If going for a winger though then I agree with the OP, Kvara or Leao for me.

19.) 06 Sep 2023 20:25:12
Saka would be ideal but not happening, Sane fits the bill but a bit old let than the usual target range.
Bowen would be a great option in my opinion, as would Diaby if he has a good season at the Villa. I will watch Andy Fati at Brighton as he might be a good option if he performs. No reason we couldn’t do a Spurs like what they did to Southampton with Ol’ Toby Ald.
Bakayoko is probably the stand out though. Young, promising, left footed and oace for days, sell on value etc etc. All just my opinion of course, but I certainly wouldn’t want to see Szlob playing there.

20.) 06 Sep 2023 20:40:24
Chiesa is too damn slow to do anything in the premier league.
You need elite pace in the premier league.

Here’s a name I’ve not heard for a while, does anyone know how he’s doing?

Thomas Lemar.

He seemed to be a good bet once upon a time.

21.) 06 Sep 2023 21:08:23
Nobody knows what level Saka could reach, but Salah wasn't at his current level when he signed.
Saka could turn out to be better than Salah, or he could let it go to his head and tail off. Absolutely no way of telling.
He is a joy to watch though, a wonderful talent.

22.) 06 Sep 2023 21:58:17
IMO, leave Szobo exactly where he is killing it now in a position that suits him and the team. For me, no moving if current players anywhere in the team just to do a job. We will have enuff money to get the replacement (s) we need for him without moving performing players to his position. Doesn’t make sense, imo.

23.) 06 Sep 2023 22:40:02
A couple of other names worth considering

Pedro Neto of Wolves. Seems to have come back strongly from a serious injury, Prem experience and good end product

Yeremy Pino was well thought of a while back, though heard little recently.

Eds, appreciate your thoughts on whether either would be a good fit for us or if there is any interest?

24.) 07 Sep 2023 12:19:05
I hear Adama Traori may be available soon ?.

In the summer of 2019 we bought Minamino for around £8mill, a youngster for the Under 18s and 2 backup keepers. That season we won the title.

Can people just get a little bit of (swear word) perspective?

We aren't going to be splashing money around like the other cash rich clubs do, we just can't. But that doesn't mean that we can't still perform on the field.

We were decimated by injuries to key players in the same position last season and still finished 4th. We have a squad that can challenge for the title, simple as that.

If someone else signs then great, if not then fine, we have a great squad and have every chance of having a great season.

Reading some of the comments on these pages makes it seem like we may as well pack up for the year if we don't sign some random for £50mill.

We shouldn’t sign players just because others are but we should always improve the squad in every window if finances allow. The owners/ club could be accused of letting other teams catch up to us this window but what can you do? FSG isn’t a bottomless pit of money so we just have to suck it up. I can’t see any more ins now. Sadly but there it is.

2.) 30 Aug 2021 23:43:34
That was 2 years ago we didn’t need much then. We need players now. Mignolet should have been either kept or replaced better though. Bruno Fernandes was available that summer and Haaland 6 months later, two positions that need filling now would have been filled. You can always improve your team.

3.) 31 Aug 2021 00:01:18
Thats hardly lavish spending but fills two places greatly in need of attention.

4.) 31 Aug 2021 00:00:19
We should be able to sign the players we need to though were not asking for Halland and Mbappe on deadline day. We keep hearing about all the sponsorship deals were signing up with but never see the outcome. Every club has overheads, if our owners can afford to dig in when needed they are in the wrong sport. Net spend = zero investment from the owners so please stop with this net spend nonsense. If we spend our transfer fees we receive do we not get money for winning a league, CL and WCC in the last few years. We have no more problems than any other club but were being outspent by most of them and especially the ones we need to keep up with. Personally if we ended the window with say Doku, Bisssoma.

{Ed0666's Note - pack up you’re troubles in you’re old kit bag and smile smile smile, what’s the use of worrying it never was worthwhile oh….pack up you’re troubles in you’re old kit bag and smile smile smile.

5.) 31 Aug 2021 00:12:56
At the time Harland was 5 years old and Fernandes wanted to join United.

6.) 31 Aug 2021 03:45:00
Ah come on RedDawn, if we don't sign some random player for at least £150,000,000 I'm going to freak out.
How will I ever show my face down the pub again?
Oh the SHAME!

The thing that makes me really sad about this whole sordid affair is the progress that I thought the club had made over the past couple of years in rebuilding the relationship with the fans and the community.

For years we've watched as Everton ran an exceptional community project, the club and and the players were involved in so much good positive work throughout the community and the area. I'm happy to admit that I looked on in envy at how well Everton operated that part of the club.

And then over the last couple of years I've seen a real push by the club to reach out more. The social media presence has completely changed to one of inclusivity, the players and management team have worked hard to show the club in a good light and repair relationships with the community that had broken down through years of neglect.

I honestly started to be really proud of the club and the work they were doing, completely separate to the pride in how the team was performing.

All of that goodwill has now vanished and it won't be coming back any time soon. How can this club now run community projects in Liverpool and the surrounding area after selling the fans down the river? How can anything they do now been seen as the slightest bit sincere?

I'm embarrassed, again. After all the progress the club had "seemingly" made both on and off the pitch, this giant leap backwards is utterly embarrassing.

It's just very sad.

Purely hypothetical question to break up the endless Thiago questions.

With him seemingly available this summer, who here would take Ozil for a couple of seasons?

I know Ed001 was historically a big fan of him. Do you think he could fit into our system?

(Don't worry, I know this isn't happening, it is purely hypothetical. )

RedDawn

{Ed001's Note - he would not really fit in the way we want to play.}

1.) 01 Sep 2020 15:35:26
He is difficult to fit in our system. with our front three and ozil supplying them is just mouth watering. Id love him at anfield.

2.) 02 Sep 2020 09:48:47
Akrubbish, The version of Ozil who could do all that no longer exists, IMO. The one there is right now, has prolly lost a step or two. You don't get better by NOT playing or being frozen out of the team.

I wasn't aware that Juve were willing to let Soule leave. Is he likely to go Ed002? Him and Yildiz look like great prospects for Juve.

Soule seems to be making waves out on loan and doing very well. Sort of wish we were one of the interested parties if an exit is on the cards.

(I'll ask on the European pages about his possible destinations)

RedDawn

{Ed002's Note - Juventus will look to keep him, particularly with the interest in Iling Junior.}

Hi Ed002,

You said recently that Hincapie would likely not be ready to be a starter in the Premier League? Has that changed and he has made progress, or would signing him be more "one for the future"?

Cheers.

RedDawn

{Ed002's Note - Piero Hincapie (CB) I cannot see interest of Nottingham Forest going anywhere - an option for West Ham. Scouted and rejected by Spurs. Probably not good enough to be a starter in the Premier League just yet. Open to a move to Liverpool as they look for cover. Tapsoba is still possibly leaving which means Bayer Leverkusen may hang on to him until next summer - if they sell late in the window there will be a significantly high expectation in terms of a fee.}

If we were able to sign one Wolves player it would have to be Jota for me and I think he would suit how we play as well. Would be an excellent signing.

But it's not happening, which is a shame.

From what I have read it wasn't solely due to Rafa wanting to replace him with Barry, that was more of a follow up to the falling out.

Xabi wanted to stay with his wife who was in labour just before a CL tie in Italy, saying that he would meet up with the team once she had given birth.

Rafa insisted on him making a choice between travelling with the team or staying with his wife and Xabi chose his family (absolutely fair imo! ) .

The relationship between them was irreparably damaged as a result. I liked Rafa and had a lot of time for him, but this was a stupid decision and a bad way to act.

RedDawn

{Ed001's Note - Rafa has since said that same about it and he acted differently in similar situations later on.}

I might be putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5 here but I strongly suspect that the club has lined up Klopp's replacement already, or at the very least has had positive talks with at least one potential manager.

There was no reason that Klopp had to make this announcement now, it could have waited until closer to the end of the season, especially as a number of support staff are leaving too. I think the only way it makes sense to announce it in January is if the club are pretty confident that they know who the manager is going to be next season already.

Would you agree Ed001?

RedDawn

{Ed001's Note - not really, I don't think him going or announcing it is anything to do with the incoming. I think it is more likely someone had found out.}

Funny isn't it, if we list our right backs as TAA, Bradley, Gomez, Ramsey, it looks really quite strong and an area we don't really need to focus on.

However, if TAA moves into midfield (seemingly more likely all the time), and our list of right backs becomes Bradley, Gomez, Ramsey. that seems incredibly weak for a team wanting to win titles and becomes an absolutely essential position to resolve.

Is there any chance that Trent's move into midfield might well be dictated by whether we can find a top quality DM/ CM or a top quality RB to sign?

For me, top quality RBs are in short supply at the moment.

If I could pick 3 players from the same club it would be Saliba, Rice and maybe even Saka as well, but. 1 from each club would be;

Saliba
Bruno G
Haaland.

I will fully support the player if he comes in, like I will with all the players.

But this has a massive Christian Poulsen whiff to it that gives me the jitters.
