Hey,
Was thinking about the development of players like robertson and how he has surprised people with how much he has developed over the last year and just wondered which players has surprised you most in terms of how good they have turned out or how poor? .
I think for me firmino has really impressed as i knew very little about it when we signed him. In terms of being disappointed i would say joe cole. I was made up when we signed him thought he could be special for us but was a big let down and never got going at all.

Interested to hear peoples oponions?

Milner for me has been a revelation, it has just clicked for him here. TAA and Gomez also have been excellent. Moreno situation has been a shame as I thought he could be very good but has had more than enough time here, hopefully for him he might go elsewhere and do well. Markovic is another.

2.) 10 Oct 2018 18:41:01
Luis Alberto was a major let down. Came with a big reputation but barely played. Joe Cole of course, is a good one. Stewart downing wasn't good enough. And then there's Andy Carroll and Christian benteke.

Suarez was better than I'd dared to dream and firmino is a great shout. In his first season I wasn't impressed but in all honesty I didn't see many full games only motd.
I was very impressed with klavan last season, I thought he had really improved. Being a lcb like vvd I'm not surprised he moved on.

And then there is Danny sturridge, I was hoping we would go for him months before he left Chelsea, before the rumours started and he was better than I thought he'd be. If he hadn't had those awful injuries he could have won the Baldon d'or or at least seriously knocked on that door.

3.) 10 Oct 2018 18:46:22
For Good, I would say Lovern/ Hendo/ Lucas. They developed infront of us. They are scrutinized every game yet they gave all. There are people, almost everyone, ready to jump on their back at every given chance yet they showed fight. They are handling different type of pressure but they didn't let us down as often as people suggest

On poor, Ibe/ Ojo/ Suso (In our shirts) . I really thought they will step up and be some player for a us. Even though they will be a football player but not in our jersey.

4.) 10 Oct 2018 18:51:12
I know most people probably think it was par for course, but one of the biggest letdowns for me was Mario Balotelli. Sure, he's always been lazy on the pitch and wild off it, but at Inter, City, Milan and Italy he banged in goals (he's got quite a decent strike rate for Nice now too) . However, he couldn't score to save his life with us, and on top of that, the antics and entertainment that's followed him throughout his career seemed to have deserted him too.

5.) 10 Oct 2018 19:47:34
I think Aquilani has been the biggest letdown. We had just let Alonso go to Real and he was supposed to have come in and taken over the role. He never did and Alonso's role has never been replaced ever since.

6.) 10 Oct 2018 20:07:54
Aquilani is a good shout, and ballotelli.

Lucas is a brilliant shout for a player who developed well. I'll always love Lucas.

7.) 10 Oct 2018 20:05:53
Spot on ArAy 1969. Aquilani started Rafa’s decline! You don’t replace Xabi! They are born once in 100 years 😎.

8.) 10 Oct 2018 20:38:45
Harry Kewell, Ziege - big disappointments

Sami Hyypia - never heard of him, became an Anfield legend.

9.) 10 Oct 2018 21:46:32
The biggest disappointment was Stan Collymore, so much talent wasted.
The biggest surprise was Rob Jones, he would have won 100 caps for England if it wasn’t for injuries.

10.) 11 Oct 2018 00:18:37
Lovren for both answers. When he initially joined he was a quality defender for southampton and it all just fell to pieces. After so many consistently bad performances and all the backlash, how he ended up becoming a dependable centre back for us, particularly after the spurs game last year, i will never know. A testament to his true ability and character. Also sturridge because i never knew how good he would become and how rapidly his star would fall, a colossal shame for football as a whole.

11.) 11 Oct 2018 00:46:56
Morientes big let down
Mcallister really surprised me.

12.) 11 Oct 2018 05:42:00
biggest surprise for me was Christian benteke. i though he would lit the league because he had everything as a striker pace power skill. he should have been a better Drogba. That goal against united! God how he flopped.
a player that turned out too good was definitely mo salah, when he signed i wasnt sure he even fit the bill and definitely i didn't think he was a klopp type player. he scored record number of goals in his first season.

13.) 11 Oct 2018 08:33:34
Hyypia is a great shout what a signing, couts i could see a bit of magic in from the start but how he improved every year was impressive, alonso obviously needs to be on the list but the winner has to be suarez for me, i couldn't believe how good he was from day one, on and off the ball he was another class for us.

14.) 11 Oct 2018 09:36:53
Luis Alberto has been fantastic in Italy I do think if he was given actual game time he would of been great for us.

15.) 11 Oct 2018 12:40:33
blimey, real mixed bag here. luis alberto coat about 6m and was pretty much just a kid. surely expectation couldn't be that high!? Milner? been great this season and in the year he played left back but prior to that there was a massive hate factor behind him ( I've never understood why) . for turning good it would be alonso cos i didn't know know much about him and i doubt many of us is, hypia and riise would also be up there. For bad i think cole, Kewell, riedle, morientes are all good calls for under delivering and litmanen too ( but this one was because we had a manager that didn't play to his strengths)

16.) 11 Oct 2018 13:22:33
Alonso for me. Alongside Gerrard, we had such anicredible midfield! I will never get over his move to Madrid!

Just wondered what people's thoughts were?
If klopp continues with his rotation policy who's turn is it to get a rest and who can we expect to start given it's a tough away game v arsenal?

I think the team should be same back four as the last game with Henderson Ox, Coutinho in midfield and a front three of Sarah, Firmino, Mane Ox offers so much more in midfield than Gini or Can seems to have more bite and drive in his game.

2.) 20 Dec 2017 21:22:51
Thanks slippers
I think that is probably the best team available I can see him resting one of the 'fab four'though and maybe starting Milner in midfield.
Not my choice!

3.) 20 Dec 2017 22:13:43
Disagree, RDP. Milner should be nowhere near midfield in a game where we need CM's who can press, harry and put pressure on Arsenal's mid's with relentless passion. Milner does not fit that bill and never has. He does a lot of aimless running which anyone could see by watching the Spurs and Chelsea game where he was bang awful.

As for the lineup, play that CM with Hendo and Ox who can do the above functions to perfection with maybe Can in for Wiji. The back 5 should be intact from the B'mouth game and the front line should stay the same as well with Mane fresh to come on and finish them off on the counter provided we are leading.

4.) 21 Dec 2017 01:19:12
Almost all the games where we have played poorly have been the ones when milner has played centre mid. I admire his effort and professionalism but every action he takes on a football pitch looks like he is running in treacle.

5.) 21 Dec 2017 08:55:51
I think the back 4 will be the same, but TAA for Gomez is possible. Fab 4 all start with Can and Wiji. Not what I'd go for but I suspect it will be klopps line-up.

6.) 21 Dec 2017 09:15:11
It'll be the same team that smashed Bournemouth i would hope. They've had 5 days rest. That's more than some Arsenal players have had. Maybe Mane in for Coutinho and Karius in for Mignolet. I could stomach that i guess.

Play the best team against Arsenal, and we can rotate for the Swansea game on Boxing day. Manager-less Swansea is a much more sensible game for resting people than Arsenal away from home.

Apparently he has an injury nothing serious just enough to keep him out of the next few games.

Sorry to be a pain, but could someone please point me in the direction of the latest match review? I've searched and can't seem to find it. I'm sure I'm having a moment but is the match review for the Brentford game up yet? Thanks.

I don't think the OP was 'worrying about another teams pre season. I saw it more as opening a topic of conversation that there are clearly different approaches to pre season and who do we think would be in better shape come next Saturday or for that matter the start of the season. Of course in the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter its only pre season and only time will tell but it seemed like a reasonable thing to debate to me?

So for what its worth OP I think that we will be more 'match ready as we have seen better the team look sharper as the games have gone on.

Enjoy the season guys!

I think we played Burnley at home earlier on in the season winning 2-0 we've also played 2 away games at 12.30 on a Saturday this season winning both without conceding.

Depending on the age of the kids and budget etc, Sapporo's is a fab place for the family to eat and is something a bit different! There are quite a few independent places on bold Street that do fab food and are kid friendly too. Hope you have a fab weekend!

Eds, would be keen to get your thoughts on AOC? I think there is a decent player in there once he gets a run of games and he does provide something different and a bit more of a goal threat than the other midfielders. Its just whether he will get a run of games to prove it. Keen to know people's thoughts?

RDP RED

{Ed001's Note - it depends on form and fitness plus there is almost certain to be rotation as the season goes on. So he will get chances, it is up to him to perform like this again.}
