Hi Ed001. With Klopp saying yesterday he is happy with our goalkeepers for next season, what is your view on Mignolet's form over the last month or so? I only see highlights and he has been making some good saves, but is he also improving in the other areas that worry you? Thanks mate.

Lemonhead

{Ed001's Note - he has been playing better, but it is difficult to judge him as the whole team has been a lot better too, so he is not being tested as much. It would still be an area I would look to improve in, but at least he is showing signs of having improved. The saves he is making now are the ones that were going straight through him before. He just has to keep learning.}

Thanks ed, much appreciated.

{Ed001's Note - welcome mate.}

2.) 21 Apr 2017 11:55:57
Personally I'm happy with the goal keepers we have but would like to see a top class goal keeping coach brought in who I don't know, any idea Eds1?

{Ed001's Note - I still think bringing back Xavi Valero would be good.}

3.) 21 Apr 2017 12:13:30
ed01 would valero be open to coming back to lfc?

{Ed001's Note - not sure mate, he was open to it a few years back, no idea if he still would be.}

4.) 21 Apr 2017 14:43:29
The GK position is no longer an issue personally PROVIDED there is improved coaching from the staff, desire and drive to be the best by both Karius and Migs as well as a well-drilled defence put in front of them.

We can either get an improved GK in or improve the coaching and defence around them. Either way, improvement is needed and we are seeing it now. Long may it continue.

5.) 21 Apr 2017 14:34:10
I think mignoletagoalin should definitely go a couple of good games doesn't make him a worldy between the sticks😬Has everyone forgot how many points this guy has cost us. people saying without our injuries we'd be challenging for the league? With a tidy keeper we'd be challenging for the league in my opinion . just my honest opinion not slagging the fella off just he's not up to lfc standard. think of what we would be like with degea cortois lloris chech? if it wasn't for degea united would be fighting relegation lol🤣.

6.) 21 Apr 2017 17:04:14
Where is Valero now? I don't think Rafa brought him to Newcastle, so is he still at Real Madrid?

{Ed001's Note - I don't know to be honest.}

7.) 21 Apr 2017 19:35:31
Pretty sure he's at Newcastle with Rafa.

8.) 21 Apr 2017 19:48:06
I don't think he is Ron. He's not listed on their website as part of their coaching staff. It seems Rafa kept Simon Smith, who was there when he arrived, as goalkeeping coach.

He's not Real's first team goalkeeping coach either and I can't find any news article saying that he's at another club. Assuming he hasn't retired or isn't still at Real in some other capacity (youth team, maybe? ), he would seem to be available.

9.) 21 Apr 2017 23:11:58
I think he went to Oviedo after he left Real Madrid, but was only there for a short time before he went to a Chinese club. Not 100% sure about that though, but i think that's were he is now. Heibei Fortune China or something like that the club was called ( probably spelled different ) . I believe its the club were Pellegrini is manager.

10.) 21 Apr 2017 20:56:48
Ed01 it would be interesting to know where valero is and if he's available to see if hed come back. Thanks for the answers.

{Ed001's Note - I had assumed he had followed Rafa to Newcastle, but I can find no record of him doing so. I will see if I can find out.}

11.) 22 Apr 2017 06:51:54
I thought Mignolet put a few good punched clearances from crosses against WBA. If the team as a whole can improve the tracking/ blocking of runs to give that extea second of soace he is a big unit with a good reach so has the tools. Same with Karius.

12.) 22 Apr 2017 09:35:48
We literally do this every time to ourselves.
Migs is not a terrible keeper, he's an unreliable keeper. He will put in a few games where he looks like the beginning of the keeper we want him to be. Then 4-5 games down the line he literally throws one in the net.
If he doesn't make a stupid error between now and the end of the season then maybe he's improving. Otherwise it's the same old story.

Hi eds,

A lot of frustration being expressed at at LFC's failure to approach Klopp. I just wanted to ask how a club would go about registering an interest in a manager while he is still with another club. I remember a couple of weeks ago Ed002 pointing out that under some circumstances it would put the club in breach of the rules.

Lemonhead

{Ed002's Note - You have to approach the other club and ask permission to speak to the manager. One club has done this in respect of Klopp and that was denied as their season had not ended.}

1.) 28 May 2015 10:00:37
Thanks very much for the reply ed.

2.) 28 May 2015 13:46:27
Ed,would you go for Klopp even if he took a job just for one season with us? I think position as manager of Nationalelf, which is probably free in next year, is very interesting position for Klopp. Thanks for reply

{Ed002's Note - As I have explained when discussing his options, I think there is far to much integrity in Klopp to look do that.}

Hey Ed, we love you, please come back! I read the poster as agreeing you are a God. Maybe I misread it and I know you’ve had abuse from idiots before, but I think most readers of the site appreciate the incredible inside knowledge and all the unpaid work you put into this site.

I only saw the second half but I agree with BRover. Even if conserving energy is part of a strategy, it could have backfired because we had no cohesion in the passing, looked a bit frail in midfield (which surprised me), and were slow and clumsy on the counter. So we were under pressure for the entire half and could easily have dropped two points. Delighted with our position in the table but I think BRover is right, there are some warning lights flashing. It will be interesting to see what Klopp does to address it.

MK, I’m really sorry to hear this. One of the reasons I love this site is that I get a real education from people like you and the Eds about stuff I would never know or work out for myself. I bet I’m not alone. So when someone posts about e. g. a player, it’s always helpful to get your analysis of whether they would be a good fit for Liverpool. And so on. I do hope you will reconsider mate, a lot of people value your input.

Great information again Reid, and thanks for the reply. As you say, that ‘giving away possession’ statistic is nonsense in isolation.

The previous example (about quality of chances) leads to a further conclusion about the play itself (i. e. that the goals conceded are more frequently down to individual errors in Liverpool’s case than with a lot of other teams), and that in turn might help with analysing the team. E. g. having established that we commit more errors, is that to do with the individual players, or is it because of (e. g. ) a high press from the midfield leaves the defence exposed if we concede possession?

Impressionistically, I might think that both things are true (the high press without a designated DM is a calculated risk, and the defenders are a bit error-prone), but there are certainly posters on here like Ed001 or MK Scouser who would be able to analyse that example and set me straight without the statistical analysis. What I don’t know is whether the kind of analysis you provide would be able to contribute to that debate in a way that helps to establish an answer. It’s just an example, not sure if it’s a good one.

Anyway great to have you on the site Reid. I love Liverpool but know nothing really about tactics etc, so it’s always good to see someone with a different angle on things, especially when they’re backing up what they’re saying with solid evidence. Keep going mate!

That was a really clear and helpful post Reid, thank you.

I have a follow-up question: Your analysis helps to explain why we can still look defensively fragile at times, so it gives statistical support to something most of us probably feel (that a lot of the goals we concede are down to individual errors) . Do you have any good, preferably Liverpool-related, examples of where this kind of analysis contradicts a general impression most people have?

Brilliant post Reid, would love to hear more.
