A few points to throw into the mix.

1. I still think we'll sign Van Dijk before the end of the window. Player power always wins.

2. Make Coutinho captain. He's done it for Brazil and it is more likely to make him want to stay. Henderson is not going to play more than 50% of the games and that is not ideal.

For me Couthtino is far to quiet to be captain. You need a voice on the pitch. That's what I think we lack is a really strong vocal leader.

2.) 10 Jun 2017 13:59:58
2. Maybe vice-captain. But I really didn't see much of him having the quality of a captain.

3.) 10 Jun 2017 14:07:36
Unfortunately I can't see us signing VVD now. Even though the eds have explained it, I don't think people understand how bad the situation is regarding Liverpool, tapping up and the previous warnings from fa. We could be in serious trouble this time, all at our own fault too.
I'd love VVD, but it would probably mean Southampton pulling our pants down asking for a world record fee.

If we Learn to do business the proper and fair way, things will change

There's still a whole transfer window left, I'm not to worried about who we will and won't get. I'm more worried about this tapping up situation.

4.) 10 Jun 2017 14:27:45
Henderson is fine as captain. Your prediction that he'll play less than 50% of games next season is pure speculation at this point.

I'd prefer to see a player like Coutinho play without the extra burden of captaincy.

5.) 10 Jun 2017 15:08:35
We are Liverpool, not Arsenal. We don't just gift our most talented player the captaincy, we give it to the most influential member of the squad and that is Henderson.

6.) 10 Jun 2017 15:45:02
I've had plantar faciitus like Henderson's got. It doesn't go away too easily, as we saw last season. He never missed games through a broken leg, ligament injuries, sprains, carriage or hamstring injuries. It was plantar faciitus and he will miss a lot of games next season too. I'm not happy about it but it's a fact.

At certain times in a clubs history, it becomes obvious that the captaincy needs to change. Yeats to Smith. Smith to Hughes, Hughes to Souness, Hyypia to Gerrard etc. That time is now.

I know Coutinho appears to be quiet but he is the best player and can lead by example, like Gerrard. If he can captain Brazil, he can captain us. It might even take his game up to the next level.

as for VVD, I know what the LFV statement said and I know what the EDS said, and I respect them greatly but just have a hunch that this is not dead yet. I hope I'm right.

After reading and sharing election stuff on Facebook all day, I finally looked at football stuff and read the statement on Van Diyk.

Gutted is not the word. FURIOUS is the word. How can such a cock-up occur at a worldwide professional organisation like Liverpool F. C?

We had a player who wanted to play for us, reportedly agreed wage terms and must have known the approximate fee required. Yet we still missed out on the player. The let down for supporters and the damage to the club's reputation is immense, so whoever is responsible should pay the price with their job, no exceptions.

Usually it's at the end of the window when we feel the depression of not landing our target in the last few minutes before the deadline. We have reached a new low by having that same feeling before the window has even opened!

Watching today's game, TAA excepted, I have to say the other youngsters (Woodburn, Wilson and Brewster) were quite disappointing. I know they are only young, but where is the desire to impose themselves on the game and take it by the scruff of the neck?

Players like Owen, Fowler, Gerrard, Mcmanaman and, dare I say it, Rashford were all doing it at similar ages. Today was a perfect opportunity to showcase their talents but their control and passing was woeful.

They won't get many more opportunities to shine once Klopp strengthens the squad and they did very little today against a very mediocre side to make him look at them again in the future, unless they improve big-time.

1.) 24 May 2017 14:12:40
I was at the game, thought Woodburn did pretty well and TAA did okay. Didn't see much of Wilson though.

2.) 24 May 2017 14:36:38
Maybe the fact that you named Owen, Macca, Fowler and Gerrard as your example is the issue? Four top notch players! Very hard for any player to compare to those 4. Maybe they just are not at that level.

3.) 24 May 2017 14:45:07
For a start, comparing player is ridiculous. Everyone matures at a different rate.
Secondly, didn't they only land 11 hours previous? Maybe they were a bit tired?
It was a silly end of season friendly that meant nothing except money. Should never have been done in my opinion. Or at least let them have a few days rest first. Asking for injuries to happen.

4.) 24 May 2017 15:54:30
I agree with all the points put forward in reply, but feel that if they don't reach the level of Owen, Fowler etc, they won't make the grade with us, as much as I'd love them to do so.

Jetlagged or not, today was an opportunity for them. The fact that Carragher and Gerrard showed up better than our young players.

5.) 24 May 2017 17:06:25
Woodburn and Brewster are 17 for crying out loud.

6.) 24 May 2017 17:37:22
Flying for 10 hrs then straight on a coach from the hotel to the game might have been a factor for the younger players for whom this would have been alien let aline the regular first teamers. Give them some slack mate.

{Ed025's Note - fair point there IAC..

7.) 24 May 2017 18:28:08
No travel didn't effect the llayers in the 50s did it. The quality of pitches. The no money wages (compared to roxay) .

I could run 4 marathonz. Have to pay to play. Fly around the world. And then play for hours and give my all if allowed to wear tbe liverpool kit.

To pampered.

8.) 24 May 2017 19:35:43
And friendlies against opposition from down under is the way to measure whether youngsters are good enough or not?

Friendlies are not there to be won anyways. The results from friendlies are meaningless.

Liverpool however probably did get some good income from this match. Youngsters had a run out but games like these are not going to be a chance to show whether a player has what it takes. Australian fans had a chance to see the team they live for.

Performance means bugger all in these type of matches.

9.) 24 May 2017 23:24:14
Exactly. Judging a player on a basis of his performance in one friendly game is just foolish, especially youngsters.

10.) 24 May 2017 23:58:11
Woodburn for me had a fairly good game. Tried to hard at times but clearly was trying. Pressed well (wasnt he the one who robbed Brillante to setup Sturridge? ) . TAA wasnt bad, Wilson was anonymous, Brewster seemed overawed but showed glimpses of why he made it to the U23 this year.
Note it was a friendly and barely got out of second gear (which is probably why Carragher wasnt exposed - mind you I thought he was going to have a heart attack at one stage he was so red) .

11.) 25 May 2017 00:19:51
A 20 hour flight,

a different climate with no time to adjust.

Searing temperatures to play in. and totally different time zones.

That would affect anyone negatively.

At 17 years of age the young lads did great.

Hopefully there were no injuries.

12.) 25 May 2017 09:38:51
Dermot some good point there but "searing temperatures"? It was about 17 deg during the match - does that qualify as "searing" in the UK?

13.) 25 May 2017 21:32:25
Here in Ireland that's a heatwave.
But anyway who organised this match?
Was it a benefit to anyone?

Klopp said that after the journey and time change that any body expecting a top performance from any player doesn't know football.

James was only average when he played in goal for us. He'd be even worse now, he must be 50 at least!

Maguire is the one for me. I posted about him a few weeks ago and all the evidence was highlighted on MOTD last night.

His reading of the game and his ability to be in the right place are exceptional - just what we need.

Kloppometor

{Ed001's Note - MOTD? Says it all, their analysis is lacking in any substance without Hansen. He was under no pressure at all yesterday, Palace were dreadful, he did the same thing he does every week, charge out with the ball, except Palace just stood and watched so he could take his time and pick a pass. Usually he is pressured and gives the ball away. He is not top class at all. I would rather go for genuine left sided centre backs in Mee or Gibson personally. Neither are MOTD highlight reel players, but both are better defenders.}

Lucas should be given a testimonial and a new 2 year contract. He is still one of the best holding midfielders in the game and can also do a decent job at the back.

Also, he seems to have taken over the Gerrard mantle of settling new players into the club and giving good advice to the youngsters. As a dedicated professional he is also well respected in the dressing room.

For someone who came from another continent at a young age and was asked to change his natural position, he overcame dogs abuse at first to become the best in his position in the country. After a serious injury he has fought back to be a valuable player in the squad. For me, he was MOM in the Derby game, overshadowing the much-vaunted Guaye.

On top of all that, he actually really loves the club and there are not many you can say that about these days.

The problem with football these days is that the Doctors think they pick the team. Hats off to Coutinho for his positive attitude and nonsense to all that red zone, orange zone, green zone crap.

It was only a joke, but I'm still waiting for Karius to make less mistakes than me when I played in goal at school.

Karius should be sold if I was given a contract, never mind Ward. And I'm in my 60s.

Shankly lived too close to Everton's training ground at Bellfield and Paisley never did the washing up at home.

Other than that, can't think of any.
