Having a chat with a mate and he asked the question

Would you rather finish 5th and get to the champions league final, win or lose

Or finish 2nd and lose in the semi final?

Purely hypothetical of course but interested to hear everyone’s opinions, all for a bit of fun eh.

CL is all about winning it for me. Losing the final and not then not getting CL football would be a step back next season. The run we are on though CL football next season is in our hands and the CL comp itself let's just enjoy the ride.

2.) 06 Apr 2018 11:42:20
Agree with Jayden. We need CL football next year. I'd rather have it by winning the CL considering our position at this point, but CL football next year cannot be sacrificed.

3.) 06 Apr 2018 11:47:59
The first option offers no security for champions league football next season.

4.) 06 Apr 2018 11:48:36
As long as we get top 4 I’ll be happy. If we get to semis of CL then that will surpass my expectations so would be an overall good season. If and it’s a big if, we win the CL then wow this will be an amazing season. I really believe we can get to the final and we stand a chance whoever we’d play.

5.) 06 Apr 2018 13:07:56
No point taking the finish 5 option unless we win the CL, it’s not even a debate.

6.) 06 Apr 2018 13:12:51
I'd take the shot at the CL final in a heartbeat. No second thoughts.

Football, and sport, are about trying to win, to overcome, to succeed; and accepting nobly the potential for failure that comes with the attempt toward victory. As much as I respect the monolithic business supporting it, the romance and what I love about sport -- all sports -- is that struggle.

Accepting a respectable 2nd place finish in the league and a semi-final appearance in the CL is to say that it's about business first, and winning second.

If we're supporters of LFC, who at this point are, financially, not among the greats. don't we have to embrace the romance of sport? If we're just cheering for financial success we may as well go support City, PSG, or Real/ Barca.

Not for me, thanks.

I'm cheering for my side to triumph every time I'm watching, come what may.

7.) 06 Apr 2018 17:22:48
Win the final, finish 5th (as long as you still qualify for next season) . Trophies aren't exactly abundant nowadays and I'm sure incomings won't care (relatively) what position we finish if we can say we're Euro champions.

Lose the final and finish 5th - no thanks.

8.) 06 Apr 2018 18:20:07
OP, why can't we have both as in win the CL and finish top 4? No, seriously tho, getting CL is important while winning thenCL tho, just as important, is the icing on the cake cos with CL footie secured, you will get another crack at it if you lose the final or don't make the final.

Worst possible draw that, I think the fact we’re at home first is what will kill us, in the past we’ve won the second leg at Anfield with the atmosphere alone.

JordDodz

1.) 16 Mar 2018 11:32:48
exaxtly my thoughts worst possible draw. the toughest team to get.

2.) 16 Mar 2018 11:35:19
I think you'll go through.

3.) 16 Mar 2018 11:37:02
Strange that eh, well bring them on i guess. 😕.

4.) 16 Mar 2018 11:48:25
Boys why so negative, their only another team it'll be two good games and hopefully we come out the right side, feels like the start of a rivalry like we had with Chelsea under rafa.

5.) 16 Mar 2018 12:04:52
I said in the live chat against porto that id rather city now. i think they're the strongest team and with them wrapping the league up early they're only going to get harder as the season progresses

If we get them out of the way i think every other team is definitely beatable.

6.) 16 Mar 2018 14:07:11
OP, what makes you think it is not a tough draw for them, exactly? It's not like City have been battering us (bar the 5-0) the same way they batter other teams in the top 6 since 2009. In fact, we have the best record against them over that time and since Klopp arrived, it has only gotten better. Also, we are the only team capable of humiliating them on a consistent bases, scoring goals for fun so again, what's to be scared of?

To me, it is their fans and players and Pep, who are scared or weary of us cos we have thumped them more than any other team and they have next to never had an answer for us overall esp. since Klopp came here. So why not use those facts and certitudes to bolster your confidence instead being afraid nothing other than fear itself?

A few weeks ago I came on here and said Robertson was nowhere near good enough, Think it was just after the West Brom or arsenal game, but how I’m ready to eat humble pie. The lad was immense today and has been very good for weeks now, by no means the finished article but definitely pushing in the right direction.

Don’t think I’ve been happier for a player scoring than when the ox bagged today, love him in a Liverpool shirt he opitimises what we’re all about in my opinion

Wish we could’ve seen the game out at 4-1 to make it embarrassing for City but that wouldn’t be the Liverpool way now would it, cracking result!

JordDodz

1.) 14 Jan 2018 22:08:53
You need to share that pie out amongst a few others mate.

2.) 14 Jan 2018 22:19:59
Save me a slice.

3.) 14 Jan 2018 22:32:05
I really like him. All the great Liverpool sides have had a mad Scot in them.

{Ed025's Note - marked sterling out of the game, very effective..

4.) 14 Jan 2018 22:34:37
Mmm pie!

5.) 14 Jan 2018 22:56:37
I've liked Robertson since he came in. However save me some Humble Pie for the Ox. Now that lad is proving me wrong big time.

6.) 14 Jan 2018 23:26:03
Ox plays his heart out and talks like a proper player no BS in his jterviewsbtaljs from the heart that fella was a wise bug and personally I think he’ll only get better! No Coutinho? No VVD? No problem! Now imagine when the fella comes back!

7.) 15 Jan 2018 00:06:14
Robbo looked like a man possessed today. Credit to him.

8.) 15 Jan 2018 00:22:48
That mad press/ run upfield was half mental, half amazing. Since when do you get one left back pressing the other? Haha.

9.) 15 Jan 2018 01:22:17
i guess i have to eat some og that pie, played a really good game today, and looks better and better for every match.

10.) 15 Jan 2018 01:59:51
I've always rated Robbo, but Ox today really stepped up. Looked a different player tbf! All round a solid performance, except some lapses by which i had to turn off for the last few minutes. I thought though we defended decently for the majority of the game. Just the usual pool way i suppose! Hopefully next time we are 4-1 up we can finish the game off neatly ;)

11.) 15 Jan 2018 04:15:16
Yep, I'm ready for my Oxlaide-Chamberlain humble pie, has proven me completely wrong.

12.) 15 Jan 2018 06:23:05
I always thought Robertson was a great signing. To be honest though, he has positively surprised me with his defensive skills, and negatively with his attacking prowess of late.
With the Ox - i think he is coming on in leaps and bounds. One quality i never knew he possessed was delivering a good set piece in the box (e. g. corners) which we have been lacking for a couple of years now.
I think the Ox had a good game, but he was still the worst of our midfield trio behind Gini and Can (no discredit to him, but thought the other two did a lot better defensively)

30 Dec 2017 23:43:20
Never ever ever thought I’d say this, but we miss Moreno. Robertson is simply not good enough, I thought he was the answer but I fail to see what he’s good at other than the odd good ball in to no one.

And also it’s nearly 2018, how is Milner still playing centre midfield for a top 4 aspiring team?

JordDodz

1.) 31 Dec 2017 00:28:20
Its a squad game jord. Guys like milner are priceless.

2.) 31 Dec 2017 00:39:40
Moreno and Henderson have long term injuries, so the squad players have a chance to step up. Its called real life so Klopp cannot just draft in Dani Alves or a powered up Pirlo. It’s not FIFA 18, get a grip.

3.) 31 Dec 2017 00:58:09
He's a young lad still learning he's doing ok.

4.) 31 Dec 2017 01:41:37
He wasted a few good opportunities in attack, yes, but I thought his cover and awareness in defence was pretty top notch IMO. He can do better but not a disaster either, give the lad time.

5.) 31 Dec 2017 01:41:46
Have we even lost with Robertson on the pitch? Leicester league cup is all I remember. How many goals have we scored since Moreno has been injured? So why exactly are we missing Moreno? Robertson shades it defensively for me. I still prefer Moreno because he has come on drastically going forward can combines well with the attackers, but it would be extreme to say he is missed right now. Conversely his consecutive defensive errors led to Sevilla getting back into the game we can forgive him for it, but it still happened. Just enjoy our good run brother, we will need both to sustain our form.

6.) 31 Dec 2017 03:36:46
Sorry but to say robertson is not very good is one thing, to say the young lad is 'simply not good enough' after a few months with us id just wrong. Liverpool has developed a culture of abusing players for the sake of it.

7.) 31 Dec 2017 08:36:29
Robertson is a steady player, who is doing his job.
I just think some fans like to target the next potential scapegoat.
The lad came from low league scottish football, having been released from Celtic as a kid. That proves he has heart and determination to succeed.
I think he will improve and is good enough to be in our squad.

8.) 31 Dec 2017 09:38:12
Spot on, AW esp. on your last statement. IMO, some players can't seem to do a darn thing right in the eyes of many as they are still being implicitly punished for whatever errors they may have committed in the past. Some don't believe a player can improve and get better. Moreno, Karius a few others are still being punished for the errors they have made in the past even tho, they have been solid since then and have improved. It's like they are deemed to be irredeemable and incapable of learning from their mistakes. If that was the case, the likes of Lallana, Hendo, Can, Moreno, (all improved under Klopp) would have been gone cos they were not good enough until Klopp arrived. This is what is killing the modern day fan today.

22 Oct 2017 13:05:24
Ed25, you seem like a reasonable Evertonion (if ever there was one! ) but seriously, can I ask would you get rid of Koeman today? If so who would you want to realistically replace him?

JordDodz

{Ed025's Note - its a hard one jord as i dont like sacking managers but i think he is on borrowed time mate, i dont know who i would want to replace him. maybe tuchel or silva if watford would let him go, this game is pivotal today as to whether that will come to pass mate..

1.) 22 Oct 2017 15:29:08
Ed025 a think silva would be perfect to replace koeman, infact the board at everton should go all out to get him. he is probs the best about at the moment and would more than likely jump st the chance. Like you say koeman is on borrowed time and is useless so for the fans of the toffee's i hope you get him then maybe our derby games might become a contest agen rather than the walk overs we have had of late.

{Ed025's Note - i would take him in a heartbeat knuckles..

2.) 22 Oct 2017 20:16:01
Bring back Moyes. please.

He's the most over rated player in Europe since Hulk left, far better options out there if coutinho leaves.

I always look at it in this way, if you take KDB out of city’s team would they still be top? Whilst being considerably worse I do think they’d still be winning the league.

Take Salah away from us and I’d argue we could be below arsenal, purely hypothetical I know but there has to be a stronger case for Salah right now. Maybe the quarter final will swing the votes with who comes out on top.

JordDodz

{Ed001's Note - I think David Silva has a better argument than De Bruyne personally. He makes City tick and they struggled while he was out.}

I think If someone offered us the chance at the start of the season, that with 10 games left we’d be above spurs and Chelsea (last years top 2 by the way), we’d have bitten their hands off. It’s in our hands, no one else’s. games like today are massive now.

Did I really see MK saying Ledley King didn’t have the ability, but his leadership skills helped him?! You must have been struggling for a name to make up your ‘list’. King was brilliant who was unfortunate with injuries.

Not knocking your knowledge or opinion but being a quality defender includes those leadership skills, it’s not a special skill it’s a requirement.
