Eds, any legs to the rumour that Liverpool are looking at M'Baye Niang as part of the deal for Balo? He can play wide so might fit with the club looking at wide players. This might also be journo's putting 2 +2 together.

If there is interest, what do you think of him as a player?

Gibbs

{Ed002's Note - M'Baye Niang has become a bit of an enigma with enquiries for the player from Marseille, who would have liked a loan, West Ham and Udinese last summer and an offer from Leicester in January all falling on deaf ears. Right now the player seems content to get back to full fitness and is by all accounts looking forward to next season with Milan. There has been sustained interest from Stoke City this season - but obviously is has been out recovering for most of it.

As a player? Always seen to be the new Balotelli.}

1.) 18 May 2016 08:40:39
Thanks Ed002 for your reply, if by 'seen to be the new Balotelli' you mean his temperament and attitude then please let this be a false rumour!

Quick good luck to the boys tonight, i'm confident.

{Ed002's Note - No, his style of play.}

2.) 18 May 2016 12:36:48
Eh? Balotelli has a style of play?

{Ed002's Note - He was always known as "the new Paul Furlong".}

3.) 18 May 2016 19:31:36
I hear he's got a bit of background aggro like Balotelli.

17 May 2016 01:28:45
Eds, can I ask a question about goalkeepers and the first team squad.

With it looking like Karius is close to coming in and the likelihood he is here to push Migs, so Migs is staying. Bogdan gone. Where does that leave Danny Ward? He is the same age as Karius, so i'm assuming that Klopp doesn't rate him as good enough to push for no.1 OR, is it good practise to have 3 GK's all capable of pushing for no.1 spot - and all will be told this, hopefully improving the performance week in week out.

Alternatively, do you see another loan for Ward?

Thanks as always - hard to believe how insightful this page is!

Gibbs

{Ed001's Note - I believe they want another loan for Ward.}

1.) 17 May 2016 07:43:23
I've heard he's already been lined up to go to Huddersfield for the season on loan with a recall option. Should be a good move for all parties.

2.) 17 May 2016 08:31:08
Ed do you think Karius will be straight in as number 1 or is it looking likely Mignolet will stay first choice.

{Ed002's Note - I really don't know.}

3.) 17 May 2016 09:13:26
We will be in the Champion's League, so I expect they will both be given games and a chance to stake their claim as Number 1. I haven't seen much of Karius, but if he wins that battle with Migs then the Belgian will be let go next summer, just as Ward comes back from a season as Number 1 in the Championship.

4.) 17 May 2016 10:48:26
Jurgen meister if we lose tomorrow you will have some raw egg on that face of yours mate. Don't get ahead of yourself, it's 90 mins of football and we don't know which Liverpool will turn up. One thing I've learned this season is be prepared for anything.

5.) 17 May 2016 11:50:11
With Dortmund as well as with Mainz, Klopp used to bring in a new player only to gradually replace the one he is in competition with.
Weidenfeller was replaced slowly, so I could imagine Migs being gradually replaced by Karius.
Now with our big squad I don't know if he'll do the same here.

6.) 17 May 2016 11:57:14
Kman, my friend, I have chosen to only think in terms of Liverpool winning tomorrow. I can't entertain thoughts of losing or anxiety may get the better of me. Klopp has already made me a believer and I think it's written in the stars. Our dress rehearsal in the League Cup final will work as a benefit and everything WILL click into place on the night.

Bradley. my god. What a player - defensively he had anyone on that side completely under control, and then delivering some passes at close to the level of Trent.

As soon as he left the pitch we saw Trent get exposed.

Bradley stays, Arnold has to now be moved into the middle of the park.

Oh another note - how can Klopp leave this team? This team is absolutely magical and the youth coming through. If he stays, he could win so much with these boys.

What a gift to the incoming manager to work with this group.

Gibbs

1.) 01 Feb 2024 03:25:02
If Bajcetic turns out to be the player we hope he’ll be, we’ve got a complete team. The technical quality of this Liverpool squad is the best it’s ever been.
We’ve outclassed Chelsea for years now but they’ve always had the ability to turn the game into a s*i*fest, yet they were made to look a silly little team last night.

2.) 01 Feb 2024 07:38:26
Perfect end to the season apart from the glaring obvious would be for Joe to score his 1st goal a screamer I to the kop end?

3.) 01 Feb 2024 08:30:50
Ed01 said Bradley was special a while ago so again, he called it.

08 Feb 2023 21:21:03
Ed1 if you are around.

It’s clear for all to see tactics aren’t working - even though everyone says they don’t have the legs surely we are better off bringing Hendo and Milly into midfield with Baj?

Get the midfield compact and industrious again, get some strength, experience and fight back -then rely on creativity from Trent and Robbo.

Even if they don’t have the legs of 2/ 3 years ago they can at least stop teams bullying and walking through central midfield - leaving us with the wings to cover instead.

This will also give us some on-pitch leadership.

I know what everyone will say but surely we are better with an industrious but less creative midfield than what we have now.

Gibbs

{Ed001's Note - the problem is that it would play into Everton's hands. Thiago at least can get the ball down and play it, which we need right now.}

1.) 09 Feb 2023 07:00:03
Against Everton gibbs I think I'd go with that 3 as well, and Phillip's at cb. At this stage I don't know where to turn as regards who should start but u would expect them players to stand up to the physical side which Everton no doubt will bring.
Definitely need Phillips aerial ability at back, if it's matip+gomez think Everton will beat us with set pieces alone.

2.) 09 Feb 2023 07:43:22
There is no way i'd be dropping Thiago. I saw a graph the other day and Paulinho and Doucoure are the only midfielders in the league who regain possession more times per 90, and Rodri is the only midfielder in the league who completes more progressive passes per 90.

Thiago isn't the problem. He has games where his passing is off sure, but he's always fighting off the ball regardless. He's one of the best midfielders in the league, but what can he do with jokers like Matip and Gomez behind him, but also an 18 year old (who tires after 60 minutes) and Keita (who is bone idle) alongside him?

Hendo, Milner and Fabinho seem completely incapable of making a clean tackle nowadays. None of them should be anywhere near the starting XI in my opinion. Elliott also should be nowhere near midfield as he drifts too wide and it not only leaves a huge whole, but also crowds out Salah's space.

Huge work needs to be done to our midfield. Tactics are blamed a lot but you just have to watch Fabinho, Hendo and Milner to see that they're half a yard to slow to every 2nd ball and challenge.

3.) 09 Feb 2023 07:58:01
Agreed Thiago is not our problem. In a season where our midfield is being criticised for not getting around d enough he is doing more than his fair share and is easily our best midfielder right now. If we are going to stick with these tactics that are not working, I would drop a forward player or maybe even 2 back and pack the midfield to protect the defence. I would rather play with Sam Allardyce tactics than Brendan Rodgers tactics like we are right now.

4.) 09 Feb 2023 08:31:35
People are only clamouring for Henderson to be back in because they've forgotten what it's been like to watch him play this season. 90 minutes of him aimlessly hoofing the ball up in the air and you'll all be wanting him dropped again.

5.) 09 Feb 2023 08:55:32
Just back to basics don’t concede and build some confidence!
No teams fear us we are easy to play and predictable Everton are as bad but it’s a derby form is out tue window!
Need some stability I think we loose and heads roll.

6.) 09 Feb 2023 09:37:25
OP - I suggest you rewatch the Milly and Henderson show at OT before suggesting that midfield. Or maybe the Hendo performances against Leicester and Brighton. Or perhaps the Milly performance at Napoli.

Right now, our best midfield is Keita Bajcetic and Thiago. I’d put Curtis next in line before the others.

7.) 09 Feb 2023 09:58:35
My thoughts would be press and press and go all out for the first twenty mins with whatever team chosen. Hope to score a couple. Sit back and rest for the time after, choosing our attacks more carefully. That’s us back to our basics imo.

8.) 09 Feb 2023 11:27:33
Interestingly, when you look at player statistics, you can pick and choose all kinds of things.
Whilst Thiago’s all-round combativeness looks better than Henderson’s, he is more than 3 times as likely to get a yellow card.
The bigger picture though is that the entire team are playing so poorly, no one’s stats stand out.
Klopp went with Carvalho and Elliott at Goodson, and both got bullied frankly.
We know that Dyche sets his team up to be physically aggressive and intimidating, and he does have a record of this against Liverpool.
I’d be wary of our midfield mix, Thiago and Bajetic and another lightweight may get a hard time.
But equally I take Ed’s point about playing into Everton’s hands.
We have to get the first goal, otherwise I fear the outcome.

9.) 09 Feb 2023 12:31:04
For me Thiago needs to be dropped. I keep hearing these stats about how good he’s playing but it’s not what I’m seeing with my eyes.
He takes too many risks in his own half and puts us under too much pressure. Makes my blood boil.
He’s a great player to watch at times but I just wish he would get it into his head that he WILL be pressed and he needs to play the ball QUICKLY! There was one point against Wolves where he had 3 players around him and instead of a touch and a pass he rolled the ball under his foot and they were on him and he lost possession on the half way line. I just don’t think my nerves can handle watching him anymore.
I agree he is a very talented player but he’s a bit of a luxury we don’t need at this moment in time.

10.) 09 Feb 2023 12:32:09
MK Scouser, spot on. Thiago has NEVER been our problem this season. Does his passing wane a little bit? Of course BUT he is our most combative midfielder who wins the ball back a ton more than Hendo and Fab who just hoof the ball up in the air cos they have NO idea what to do with it. At least, Thiago tries to pass it and keep it moving. Same with Baj.

Him getting yellow cards? Sorry, is that supposed to be a bad thing when he is trying to get stuck in and win challenges when everyone else just stands and watches? Not for me. At least, the guy is trying his best.

As for the Hendo / Milner combo, that has almost NEVER worked and you only need to go watch the Chelsea game t Stamford Bridge last season where we were overrun for fun. Not sure who should play BUT not that combo, for sure IMO.

11.) 09 Feb 2023 12:37:57
The juicer of course he's 3 times more likely to get a yellow card as he's the only player willing to put a foot in ????.

12.) 09 Feb 2023 13:01:39
Agree with MK and Oli. Thiago is not the problem. So what if he gets more yellow cards? He's winning more tackles isn't that more important. Yes he loses possession occasionally in bad areas but all the midfield do rhat. At least he tries to beat and man and play the dificult passes. He's not the one slowing it down. The ones slowing it down are playing safe backwards passes all the time and preventing us from going on the front foot or fabinho who gets the ball stuck in hid legs everytime the ball comes near him.

13.) 09 Feb 2023 13:34:33
Keita should be nowhere near that midfield, he certainly isn't doing anything in matches to change opinions that he is a waste of space and not cut out for this league or a fight, would rather Henderson, Jones or Elliott take his place and hope fans stay off the younger guys backs, doubt it though.

14.) 09 Feb 2023 13:37:09
The midfield has been dire all season and the midfielder who has played the most is Thiago. I don’t know how anyone thinks he is having a decent season. He offers nothing going forward and while I admit Thiago is decent at nicking the ball back, his passing has got safer and safer as his confidence has gone down. He looks better than the RM because he is covering Robbo not Trent.

We all think Bajcetic is playing well but the midfield is still a massive problem and he is the ever present. I remember a similar thread 4 years ago. We had lost 3 in a row and our confidence was shot and we needed to beat Huddersfield away. I said it’s Milner time, back to basics and win the challenges first and foremost. It’s Milner time again then on 60 minutes Thiago can come on when fresh.

15.) 09 Feb 2023 13:47:36
I don’t think that Thiago is ‘the’ problem this season, though he’s part of a bigger problem.
Thiago can fight his corner, to his credit, certainly.
But he’s not, and should not be, the team’s possession winner as MKS seems to indicate.
That was the system, the press.
And I think that’s primarily why we’ve seen Henderson’s stats take a tumble.
This new way of playing suits him far less.
I’d be tempted to go Bajetic, Thiago and Henderson as the midfield against the Blues.

16.) 09 Feb 2023 13:57:12
While I don't rate Keita at all and wish he was gone, he makes more ball recoveries and off-the-ball pressures in one game than Henderson has done this whole season. That is not me saying Keita is good. That is saying how bad our captain is at footy right now and Keita is the better option.

At some point the scales will fall from everyone's eyes. Henderson should not be even coming on a sub right now. We immediately become porous when he comes on.

As for Elliott playing in midfield. That experiment also needs to stop. He's a forward player.

I am all for Curtis getting a shot though in rotation with Naby on the right side of midfield.

17.) 09 Feb 2023 14:55:35
Thiago, baj and hendo/ milner both getting 45mins. The rest of them are dreadful. Curtis is not a liverpool player ever. Nabby never has been.

18.) 09 Feb 2023 15:31:44
You could make a case for and against most of the midfield players v Everton. But because confidence is shot and it’s the derby I would like just to get back to basics. So for 60 minutes win the individual battles, win the second balls, leave everything out there. Who would you want in the trenches? Definitely Milner.

19.) 09 Feb 2023 17:41:40
Thiago has played the most cos the others are absolutely spent and can't even attempt a 5 yard pass without hoofing it up the field, things Thiago does NOT do. For a guy who is "injury prone", he has sure managed to keep himself fit for selection all season almost so far. So much for that narrative, for the time being.

If he is needs to be dropped then good luck finding anyone of a senior status in the squad willing to get stuck in and win the ball back, have the confidence to actually pass it under pressure etc. Oh and btw, don't look at Naby cos that's NOT where the answer to that question lies, IMO. He just looks decent in a crap team. In a good team operating in r.

20.) 09 Feb 2023 18:50:39
Thiago-Bajcetic-Elliot is our best centre mid currently imo. Maybe Hendo in for Elliot after 60-65 mins. I expect Klopp to start Hendo because he's captain and I get it for a derby.

21.) 09 Feb 2023 19:14:21
Oli that is the point. Thiago does not pass it under pressure. Fair play to him he backs himself every time even though he loses the ball more often than not. Then he will chase around to try and win it back which adds to his recovery stats I guess.
I like him as a player in the right situation, he looks imperious on the ball sometimes. Until he doesn’t.
I’d rather a player that just doesn’t give the ball away to start with to be honest. Not sure we have too many of those though.

22.) 10 Feb 2023 06:59:03
Elliot can not be put into that midfield role again, I'd sooner try gakpo to be honest or carvalho. Once elliot is on the right of midfield salah gas no help and trent is open to counter attack all game. Offers no cover for trent what so ever. Love elliot up front but not for me in midfield.
Please just give gakpo his chance on left and elliot a chance on right. Nunez or salah upfront centrally. Like square cogs in round holes quite often to be honest from klopp.

Ed001, hope you are doing well.

Would love your perspective on world footballs top 10 attacking (positionally) players right now? We all hear the various names banded about but would be a great read getting your perspective.

Gibbs

{Ed001's Note - I do a Top 10s list every few weeks on different positions. You should be able to find them on our football news site here with a quick search. I remember doing the attacking mids one a while back (probably last season now) and getting pelters for mentioning James Maddison!}

1.) 25 Mar 2019 05:07:53
Awesome. Will check it out now.

Thanks Ed001.

{Ed001's Note - welcome mate, should show up in a search for top 10 I hope.}

20 Jul 2018 05:04:39
Question for Ed1.

I don't want this to come across as negative, with all the deserved positivity towards the club and the owners (who imo are brilliant) .

However, how much can the coaching staff affect a truly great player? It's been mentioned on many occasions LFC GK coach, is not up to standard and I wonder if there is a chance he could cause a decline in the performance level of AB? Or, in your experience truly great players excel because of themselves, not wholly due to the coaching staff.

Gibbs

{Ed001's Note - the best players become the best players because they drive themselves to learn for themselves. Coaching does have an impact, but it is the person themselves that determines how much or how little it has.}

1.) 20 Jul 2018 06:40:06
Exactly Ed1 and that's another thing I love about Alisson is his confidence, it's through the roof because he believes in himself. He seems like the kind of fella to always want to push himself that step further because he knows he can.

It's like at a school, you do well if you want to do well, teachers can try and guide you but that's as far as it goes, you've got to want to do it yourself to get anywhere. It all goes on ones own mental strengths and Alisson is certainly mentally strong but most importantly he believes in himself.

{Ed001's Note - I was reading about how it tends to be the late bloomers that have the best careers in sports, as they constantly have to prove themselves. It is not because they have better coaching than the others, they often have less natural talent at a young age, but they have to work twice as hard to catch up, while those with the natural talent are already way ahead of the rest so tend to work less hard.}

2.) 20 Jul 2018 06:49:31
That's actually very interesting and makes so much sense mate.

{Ed001's Note - I just wonder why football has not caught onto it yet and stopped bothering with trying to poach the best youngsters from other clubs, as they are the least likely ones to make it anyway!}

3.) 20 Jul 2018 07:48:58
Because for every Ronaldo who makes there own way, there is a Messi sitting in an academy with 3 months left on his contract 😂

I think it's at the point now that you don't want to be the one who let that player get away.

Wenger literally almost had Messi.
Houllier almost had Ronaldo.

{Ed001's Note - the thing is that the ones that get let go often become better because they were let go and if you keep hold of them they stagnate.}

4.) 20 Jul 2018 08:31:14
Yeah but you can't deny that what we require in terms of level the rest of the prem doesn't and if it costs us 250k to sign a young player to then sell for 10-50 mil, it's really a no brainer.

Sterling payed for the majority of academy costs over the past say 5 years, not directly but you know what I mean.

Once they play for us if they can make it to the first team, there price almost triples.

Harry Wilson, 1 good year this year and he's worth 15 million to a Southampton.

Think of ibe. 15 million and did fiddly squat, except play for us.

Nat Phillips, Curtis Jones and Camacho are all doing a heck of a job staking a squad place claim for this year.

Yeah in right now The academy signings we make might not do anything but in 5 years time you'll be thanking your lucky stars we got them.

{Ed001's Note - Ibe had been in Wycombe's first team as a child, that was what made him seem worth the money.}

5.) 20 Jul 2018 09:07:03
Fair enough ed.

They made ibe, we made sterling. Swings and roundabouts.

The academy can be used to make money as much as produce the next star. The dream is that they can do both.

{Ed001's Note - making money is irrelevant, it should be about producing first team players. When it starts being seen as a money maker it ends up failing.}

6.) 20 Jul 2018 10:05:51
You count discount bringing in a player for tuppence and selling him on for 10/ 15 million.

But I agree the first thought has to be make first team players but making some added income isn't a bad thing.

7.) 20 Jul 2018 10:21:45
Ha! Ronaldo making his own way. Do me a favour. He was always destined for greatness, he just didn't stop when he got there. That's what sets him apart.

Also, the money making academy seems to be Chelsea's model. I may well be wrong, but they do seem to do alright from the sale of bright youngsters and not progress any to the first team.

Ed001

Have you thought about a 'pinned post' or a page, with the current state of play with potential transfers (in and out), and even a time-stamp on the latest update.

This would give somewhere for most posters who ask the same questions every 5 minutes a place to go and take some of the pressure off yourself and the other Ed's.

Gibbs

{Ed001's Note - we tried it once and it had no effect.}

1.) 08 Jun 2018 21:20:21
It's ironic how often this gets asked 😂.

2.) 08 Jun 2018 21:30:26
Ed you would think after every transfer window going the same way we would’ve learned. But we are a special breed, nice and clean these things take time and a lot of effort behind the scene.

3.) 08 Jun 2018 21:32:27
Well that speaks volumes!

Eternally grateful for the knowledge you guys do provide us all.

4.) 08 Jun 2018 22:31:17
Look at the "Match Posts" page. Hardly anyone ever posts there after games despite it being there for that purpose. People are creatures of habit and unless there is incentive to change, they simply won't do it.

This exact scenario happened with Fabinho, and now look at him? He was reported unsettled and potentially off to PSG who held prior interest.

It’s paper talk. Let’s give him and the Liverpool management team time to get him on the right track. He will be some player, so I hope it’s with us.

We should be a little more grateful for what we have. A sub 20 first team CB playing at arguably the highest level in Europe, top of the league.

Too many supporters only get excited about new signings for the sake of it. De Ligt is unproven. Gomez is already ours. VVD and Gomez are our CB pairing for the next 5/ 6 years. Let’s get some better quality backups with positional flexibility in the FB positions.
