Firstly good game and a good point but we only have to look at the fixture list and start thinking that we should win these
Now my takeaways from the game
1. Our offside trap this year is fantastic(cough cough Ramsey), but seriously in all 3 games our trap has worked fantastically well.
2. Lovren is starting to look solid now. He is good with clearances with his feet but needs to clear better with his head
3.Clyne looked a little out of depth against Sanchez but still had a better than average game as i think Ozil outshone Sanchez in this game
4.Milner's best game so far
5. Firmino I was a bit disappointed with him though he did create the best chance for our game he still looked hesitant and a bit short on confidence aka Markovic Syndrome
6. IBE seems to have gone out of the boil. Would keep Markovic and Origi before him righy now
7. Lucas seems to have gotten into a habit of losing 50-50's
Thanks

Good podcast but i would say people raving about Lucas must see the stat's of 2013-14 season. It just show's how much people overrate Lucas

You mean the season Gerrard played cdm for the most of? And when Lucas did get a chance, he was played out of position?

Red Rum

Thats not correct though as the guys said we had studge sterling and suarez all on fire. Not to mention when he played he played in CM ahead of gerrard who was the *CDM*. This isn't his prefered position therefore the 13/14 season stats don't mean anywhere near as much as last season. The fact is Lucas makes our team so much better and balanced

3.) 24 Aug 2015 19:18:04
Lucas was CDM in 2013/14 up until January.

Gerrard didn't move there until we played Stoke, and he lasted 45 minutes in that position the following week against Villa before BR brought Lucas on at half time and pushed Gerrard further forward. If Lucas hadn't been injured that same match, that would've been the end of Gerrard at CDM.

Take a look at goals conceded Aug 2013 - Jan 2014 and goals conceded Jan 14 - May 14 if you want to talk about stats.

To the people slating Rodgers for the poor treatment of Lucas i agree every manager must be true to the players but let's all consider what the manager wants in a dm and what lucas does. I think Rodgers wants a ball playing Dm in which the ball playing quality of the DM is more valued than his ability to tackle. So does lucas fits the bill I think no. Yes he is the best midfielder in our team in certain departments which are tackling, interception and defensive positioning but he is nowhere good enough as a ballplaying midfielder. Can on the other hand while playing Cb has shown us he is a good ballplaying footballer who is also mobile and a good tackler so I think Can is a better option in DM than Lucas. But again Lucas's commitment to the club deserved better treatment from Rodgers but rather than questioning his motive in making Lucas the 4th or 5th choice mid I would question the way he has communicated it to Lucas

well if that's what you think let's see if Can gets a game ahead of Milner or Hendo? come to think of it I would be surprised if Teachers pet Allen is not ahead of him when fit?
I'm slating Rodgers the mans got us going dizzy

2.) 11 Aug 2015 23:46:06
Cruelharsh - Lucas is our best ball playing defensive midfielder we have because he's the only senior defensive midfielder at the club. If Rodgers wants a DM who's better on the ball than Lucas, then he needs to buy one. Can's a fine player, but he has no positional discipline at the moment and regardless of how fit, strong and good at tackling he is, that's a huge problem for a defensive midfielder, it will cost us and could potentially upset Can's development as a player. It should as plain as day looking at him play that he's not suited to the position (which would be a waste of his attacking potential anyway). Neither is Allen.

I'll put it to you this way: Rodgers dropped Lucas at the start of last season, but had to recall him because we were leaking goals like mad and had no semblance of cohesion bringing the ball out from the back. And the only change to his central midfield options this season is that he has Milner instead of Gerrard. This time he won't have Lucas to recall. Hopefully there'll be a silver lining and he'll call up Rossiter who'll step up to the plate, but personally I expect to him shoe horn Can, Allen and Hendo in there one after another and sit there scratching his head wondering why it doesn't work.

Spot on, Something! Cruel, you are missing the point. If
Lucas is not good enuff, then let that be a football issue that can be debated. Treating players disgracefully and going back on your word at every turn is the issue here which many are not happy about. Lucas was gone in Jan but BR begged him to stay because we were aweful and couldn't keep a clean sheet and Lucas and Sahko, another one of his punching bags, delivered. Now, he's back to trashing them. Try to seperate the two in order to see the bigger picture.

Agree Something Red
Even though Lucas was converting from an attacking midfielder to a defensive midfielder (explains why he still gets caught out of position) he is the best we have

Trying to get Milner/Henderson/Allen/Can to play this specialist role is asking for trouble

The only way to avoid needing this role is to change tactics to a 4-4-2 , get the midfield 4 to sit closer to the back 4 (high or deeper) squeezing out any space between the two banks of 4
Drop the pressing game for the midfield as this creates gaps for the opposition to play and leave the pressing to the front 2
This is deemed as archaic and negative counter attack style of football but it still works for certain teams

5.) 12 Aug 2015 10:57:03
I couldn't agree more, Something Red. If Lucas isn't he's type of DM, then he should have bought someone else, who plays the role the way he wants. These makes Milners signing all the more confusing.

There's only one problem with him. That is when defending in the final 3rd Lucas becomes a liabilty. He leaves the the edge of the penalty area empty where oppositions midfielders easily occupy good positions and make us vulnerable. Also look hiw easily he lost his marker for the 1st Villa goal

Is playing in European Competitions the only marker for success and as for the matter that Liverpool are depending on others, I will say that yes they might be 5th in the premier league but for sure they are still in the top 15 clubs in the world even in terms of players and a consistent run in the champions league will get us to quarter finals with some luck.
