Bit left field but if we don't sign a centre back tomorrow does anyone think there's a chance we could use Can there? He's deceptively quick, decent in the air and is obviously comfy on the ball, I think he could be brilliant there if he's disciplined enough for it.

No why not just keep playing matip an lovern and maybe klaven and gomez if we have injuries its not football manager mate jesus.

2.) 30 Aug 2017 21:26:38
Leave in now Brendan. Your not the manager anymore!

3.) 30 Aug 2017 21:27:27
Disciplined? Who Emre Can 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄.

4.) 30 Aug 2017 21:38:14
Remember the year he played there, badly? Also, how will that pursuade him to stay?

5.) 30 Aug 2017 21:40:46
No he messes about on the ball .

6.) 30 Aug 2017 21:41:40
No no no no no.

7.) 30 Aug 2017 21:42:42
I was thinking the same thing earlier, he's played in defence for Germany at the highest level and he wants playing time so why not. I personally think it would work.

8.) 30 Aug 2017 21:48:46
I think he has the skills to play there, but no chance whatsoever that he would accept to play there. Remember he gets yellows routinely - how many of those would translate to reds if he was playing around the box?

9.) 30 Aug 2017 21:49:05
What a waste of talent.

10.) 30 Aug 2017 22:14:19
Why play a highly talented player, who is developing into one of the best centre midfielders in the premier league, in a position he doesn't want to play in and lose his composure, physical presence and ability on the ball in midfield.

Well my thoughts were that against most teams, but particularly those that sit back, our centre halfs see an awful lot of the ball and have very little defending to do. Klopp clearly doesn't have an issue with them carrying the ball out of defence and Matip does it every so often. If we are playing a team posing little attacking threat that are set up only to defend I would rather Can be the man on the ball looking to pick out runners than Lovren. Also, with Can having played midfield he should intuitively know when a player wants to receive a short pass and more importantly when they do not. It was apparent in both legs against Hoffenheim and in the Arsenal game that Lovren's judgment when it comes to this is less than perfect. I'm not trying to belittle Lovren here but when you look at what is required in certain games I think Can playing there is an option. It's all about opinions so I appreciate the feedback, I'm very optimistic about the season regardless!

Oh and for those with the dodgy memories, Can took over from Lovren after a 3-0 defeat to Man Utd and we went on an 11 match unbeaten streak- hardly playing poorly!

Firmino is great at closing down the opponent. He should play right back.

Regarding alternatives to Van Dijk, I read about there being some doubts over Milan's Chinese owner's financial position - would this mean Romagnoli might be available at the right price? He can play out from the back, excellent in the air and is young so retain value, ticks all the boxes!

Excellent player, but I doubt he's attainable.

Is there a possibility that Liverpool are talking to Barcelona purely to appease Coutinho even if they have no intention of selling? This could be down to common courtesy or a Machiavellian plot to fool their own player depending on which brand of crazy is your preference but I think it's a possibility nonetheless. If I had to call it, I'd say Coutinho is going nowhere.

Three pertinent points:

1. Barcelona have a ridiculous amount of funds from the sale of Neymar
2. Coutinho has expressed his desire to move to Barcelona for over a year
3. Liverpool have agreed to meet Barcelona reps to discuss Phil's transfer

So three of the major parties involve seem to be progressing with a deal. Klopp might be talking the talk but all the signs point to Coutinho walking out.

I agree that Barcelona will sign someone else if they don't get Coutinho this year - however Coutinho could stay for 3 years, potentially winning the league ( though I'd imagine his statue is in jeopardy due to the transfer request! ) and then join Barcelona- he'd only be the same age then as Suarez was when he joined them - he could end up fulfilling both of his expressed dreams.

{Ed002's Note - It is nothing to do with The Runt. His agen in three years time is of zero relevance.}

I think both Clyne and Milner were harshly judged on the second half of last season, the general consensus seeming to be that they were found out and offered little going forward. I think it was more that the opposition sussed out how to counter the high press; with the full backs pushed on our centre halfs were told to split leaving a 40 yard wide corridor for the opposition to play the ball into when possession was turned over. After we conceded goals to this tactic in several games I'm convinced Klopp instructed the full backs that they were still to push up but that they could not sacrifice possession. This is why we stopped seeing Milner going around the outside and Clyne repeatedly slowed down or ended our attacks by playing the ball all the way back to our centre halfs instead of crossing from promising positions. I think part of the reason Klopp would like Keita is to cover this space when we are attacking and track any runs by quick strikers playing on the break.
