Excellent- thanks Ed. I married a big Timbers fan last year (she's been converted to yell for the Reds now too) . We've been to Providence Park a few times and the atmosphere is always electric. Any Reds over in the Pacific NW, I recommend dropping in for a game.

I love it when a goal is scored and Timber Joey cuts a cookie off a huge tree that's behind the goal- you didn't mention in the article that he does it with a chainsaw whilst the game is still going on. So USA. Such theatre!

Anyway- it was a huge surprise to wake up to a review of our second favourite team this morning- thanks!

ps Do you follow the MLS? Are you a Timbers fan?

{Ed001's Note - sorry I should have mentioned that, it was the whole reason I put that bit in was to mention about the chainsaw. You couldn't have that in England!

No I don't follow MLS, I have tried watching it at times but I don't really enjoy it.}

I'm with you Ed. I've really tried to watch it but for me it's almost unbearable especially when they play on the artificial surfaces. I've been called a football snob, but whatever.

{Ed002's Note - I guess you feel the same about football in the Netherlands.}

MLS is definitely getting better. The intensity of the EPL may not be there, and the quality may not be as sustained, but there are definite moments of quality creeping in. The style is influenced by the high number of South American players in the league.

Like with any sport, it does help to actually be supporting one of the teams, then you're more invested in the games.

I have to admit I've never noticed the artificial surfaces having much of an effect. Only a few of the grounds seem to have them anyway - it's just the ones in the north where the winters are pretty harsh. Yes Ed002- even compared with Liverpool.

But how can mls survive now that the Zlatan has left?
