ed's oo1 what team would you go for to play city? just curious that's all. would you bring gomez in for lovren and who would you go for in midfield?

{Ed001's Note - I wouldn't change the defence, they need to settle in again. Lovren has the spot and it is up to Gomez to earn it back by performing when he gets the chance. He didn't do that in the cup so he shouldn't come back in. Midfield has to be Fabs, the two in front will be Gini and Hendo, though Hendo is a bit off form he usually steps up when it matters. Then the front 3 pick themselves.}

I thought Heno was our best midfielder v Villa and this season probably been better than Gini. It's 2 of the front 3 who are off form IMO.

Gomo did struggle v MK Dons but agains't Arsenal he was defending on his own. The keeper, defence and midfield v Arsenal offered him very little help. We have some top kids going forward but watching the u23's we are a mile of defensively. I think Gomo will play tomorrow and start to show his worth again, Kloppo says he has not been fully fit.

I did feel for Gomez in the Arsenal game - not to be overly critical given their ages and such, but he was next to a couple teens on their debut so was always going to be a difficult on for him.

I'd back him to come back eventually, I think people forget how long he was out for after that broken leg and that he really hasn't played all that, uch since his leg break.

I think that i would play Ox hendo and gini in midfield against Genk. It would be complete folly to play Fab on the off chance that he gets injured, after leaving him out against Villa.

Spot on, Ed. IMO, I have this feeling that certain people just want Gomez to come in and are kind of willing Klopp to do it whereas based on what we are all seeing, the kid tho supremely talented, has not done enuff to warrant starting ahead of Lovren. I mean, this is football at the highest level where you either earn your keep, convince the manager or you don't play, is it not? Lovs may have a mistake in him BUT so do our other CB's cos Matip does, VVD has been poor in the last couple of games and Gomez is also error-prone hence one of the reasons he is not playing right now.

For now, Matip is out and Lovs has the shirt now, just like Gomez took the shirt last season when Lovs was still on holiday after the World Cup and Matip was recovering from the injury that kept him out for the end of the 17/ 18 season. That's football. If Gomez wants his shirt back, he needs to earn it.

Is matip still injured? Anyone know how long he is out for?

Matip out for about 6 weeks.

I have not read anyone on here saying Gomez should be ahead of Matip or Lovren atm. Why mention Matip's mistakes Redwolf? Your opinion on him is well known and he has proved you 100% wrong in the last 12 months. You can count on a couple of fingers Matip's mistakes that have lead to goals in 12 months. Matip has been our best cb this season shame he is injured.

Unsurprising that Lovren played against Villa, given Wesley’s physical threat.
City will pose a different challenge however and one that may be better suited for Gomez. If fit, I’d be sorely tempted to play him.

I agree red wolf that Matip and VVD will make mistakes. Everyone does. The problem with Lovren is his mistakes are so poor that we normally concede from them. He’s got no pace so the high line doesn’t work as he has to go with runners rather than chase back and he just gets bullied way too often.
An off form Gomez is better than an on form Lovren for me so I’d go with Gomez and play him into form. With Trent on one side a VVD on the other he’ll soon pick up the pace again.

I agree with you ed001 about Hendo I think he is a great captain his more old school than most players but his form is off at the minute, but I think if we drop him for the City game he will come back with the bit between his teeth. Even if he comes on for the second half so I would start with Fabs Gini and Milner. As for the back I would go for Gomez over Lovren every time just think he needs a few games under his belt to get back to last seasons form.
