Can someone explain to me why there was booing over the national anthem?
All your doing people is making the club a target for other fans! Your making the club come across badly!

Happily explain. Her Majestys Government have done nothing but rubbish on the city for decades. If you expect us all to stand and sing songs in honour of the establishment that tried systematically to close down a city you're mistaken. Do a little research. There are multiple examples but google our new PM and comments or Thatcher and Liverpool. As for other clubs we've been a target for years, it comes with success, who cares.

Is this a joke? Scouse not English, if you want to be like the many sheep that follow the Royal Family go and support a London team. Why should we sing for a country that couldn't care less about us and who is the fool that has given you a thumbs up?

Just goes to show as I long expected Redwolf you have no clue what you are talking about. It has been that way since as long as I can remember going to wembley. They s*** on the city what do u expect? As Instanbul says do you research before spouting.

Quite well known that in the 80’s there was an approach of “managed decline” by the Government towards the City of Liverpool

It’s why, IMO, the Hillsborough cover up went right to the very top.

I had asked a question and all you want to do if attack me?
Football and politics shouldn’t mix. the club can’t do anything about politics of this country. your just putting a target onto the club!
What about people who laid down their lives for this country. Liverpool FC is bigger than the city. you need to get out of that small minded mentality. Respect others and you’ll get it return, if you don’t you get nothing but bother!

Think about the irish for the last few hundred years. They don't sing the national anthem of england. Nor do the scots, not sure about the welsh, but fair play, they are good singers.

I got into football in the mid eighties, loved liverpool. Had some brilliant players. Then after a few years i felt i had become part of something that transcends football. I've loved liverpool for as long as i can remember. Its not a smalltown mentality. If anything, it's the complete opposite.

Think of those jokes about scousers being criminals. What a load of bollox. Ever been to a big port city that didn't have a criminal element? Or any major city for that matter.

Liverpool is an amazing place. Some real famous people are scousers.

Candyman. We neither crave or require respect from other clubs. The city is bigger than the club. Football is a release from the everyday pressure of life. The way the establishment has treated the city, club and fans over the years is horrendous. I'm not attacking you im encouraging you to educate yourself. You will find many Everton fans who feel the same. You can try and seperate the politics but when politicians lie and engage in the cover up of that transpired after Hillsborough that left 96 of us dead emotions run high. As I said in my OP. Please do some reading.

In addition, google Andy Burnham Hillsborough memorial. Yoh will find that football can and has altered politics.

I’m not English but I’d imagine it is because of the new prime minister and his offensive comments about Liverpool? Am I right or off track.

I respect all your views, however you need to ask. will booing be helpful in the long run or not? I believe it won’t!
I live in Northern Ireland and with our history, I know only too well unjust events that has effected pretty much everyone in the country!
However I don’t go booing anyone’s national anthems. in fact I would have every reason to boo the Republic of Ireland’s anthem, however I found myself in Dublin watching international rugby match, where it was played. I didn’t sing it, I didn’t boo it either. I stood in respect of where I was and the people around me.
Doing this booing today, in my mind, is a lack of class. People have fought for this country, and died for this country, which to my mind, this booing does not show that their sacrifice have been worth anything!
Sorry for the long rant!

I may not live in Liverpool but have been a fan for 45 years or so. I’ve had a massive affiliation to the team and to the city. I’m sorry and most likely in the minority but it’s not necessary to boo the national anthem.

There has been some poor politics for many a year and Liverpool City has suffered it fair share but the government and monarchy are two separate matters. What has the Royal Family done to the city of Liverpool. Governments come and go and let’s face it all the parties are as useless and selfish as eachother. They play politics. We should just play football and enjoy the love of the game and team.

"Think about the irish for the last few hundred years. They don't sing the national anthem of england. "

You know Ireland is not a part of Great Britain anymore, right? Leaving aside the history, the Irish have no more reason to sing God Save the Queen than we do La Marseillaise.

Please do a little searching before you use comments like "lack of class". I believe, and will to my grave, believe class and fortitude is what we are and what we have and continue to display. JFT96.

Let’s not forget the lads who have laid down there lives have been lied to and told they’re doing it for a cause when it’s all about greed and oil money. So should we really celebrate a corrupt monarchy who just spent 50 million of tax payers money on there estate in Windsor while the homeless lie outside in sleeping bags.

@Robbiesline, as a Welshman I can tell you it doesn't go down particularly well with us either lad ;) (you are right about us being fantastic singers btw)

Who attacked you? People gave their opinions of the people of the City. You can't tell them how to feel anymore than they can't tell you not to go to the match.

Oh come on lads I understand being anti Tory but there’s nothing ‘wrong’ with supporting the royal family I know a lot of people disagree but a lot of my family are all ex military or currently serving and they all have the utmost respect for them and I think they’re entitled to that. Besides Harry’s ginger he’s definitely a Liverpool fan deep down.

Who’s offended?

The royal family? Politicians? Other clubs?

Well, good, that’s kind of the point. Why do the royals deserve our respect? Because they’re born into extreme wealth? So what?

Citizens not subjects 🤝.

I hate nonsense like this, 'football and politics shouldn't mix' - whether you like it or not football and politics have always had, at the very least, tentative links. You should be proud that we have a dissenting fan base that is at least, in some way, politically engaged. Being on the fence, or worse completely apathetic, is such a cop out. The country is heading for ever increasing turmoil, we have an undemocratically elected PM (who has made a number of disparaging comments about our city), an undemocratically elected government who had to bribe a backward, conservative Northern Irish party just to scrape a working majority, and a dodgy-at-best referendum on leaving the EU which now seems to be ploughing ahead despite pretty much all promises made pre-referendum being debunked or found to be completely false. The country is heading down a very dark path and people are rightly concerned.

I don't believe football should be free from politics - if anything it is a chance for the people to get together and express their dissatisfaction with the system and, who knows, maybe even organize and try and make a meaningful impact. Ignoring that though politics will always have a place in football, from the racism problems and how they have been dealt with and changed, to the homophobia discussions and women in the game, all of which have changed over the years and all reflect how interconnected politics and football is.

As for the national anthem - 'god save the queen'? The German aristocrats who have unfathomable wealth, unfathomable swathes of land, and who still drill the public purse each and every year? Come on mate, a lot of people are struggling just to make ends meet and you have a family worth billions (maybe even trillions) being given taxpayers money - it is a disgrace, why anyone sings the national anthem I will never know.

Finally, Liverpool has always been quite a political place, with left-leaning political allegiances and an overwhelming distrust of the south, the London elites, and the politicians making the decisions which only seem to benefit those in certain area codes. I hope this doesn't stop, and I hope (though do not expect) the fan base to become more politically aware with the aim of actually enacting some form of change. Why would you want people to be quiet and pretend like their aren't serious issues? Just watch the footy, have a few pints, and pretend like there are no problems? Ignorance may be bliss to you, but some people do care, and football is a good platform to express this.

27.) 05 Aug 2019
05 Aug 2019 08:50:18
I think we have gone off topic and went straight into politics! I don’t think any government picked on Liverpool individually, more likely that they see (or did see) the north of England as different to the south!
As for the Royal family, they generate their own wealth. any tax payers money spent on their buildings, is because we own them.

I’d say some of you are touching on socialism politics, which has been proven time and again that it doesn’t work!
It’s time to move on people. as we are told in Northern Ireland, those who once tried to kill us, now form part of our local government! Try swallowing that!
Also, NI is part of the U.K., Republic of Ireland is not.

@Candyman - The Conservatives actually mandated a steadily planned decline of Liverpool in the eighties, previously classified documents revealed as much. How is that not an attack (in economic terms) on the city? And you clearly haven't been paying attention to Bojo's past comments on both the city itself and in particular Hillsborough in which he regurgitated the baseless allegations made by Murdoch's rag in the wake of the disaster. It may not be personal to you, it is personal to many within the city and adds to the distrust many have for politicians and political establishments in the south.

As for your assertion that any taxpayer money going to the royal family because we own the buildings is factually wrong. Can we go around Buckingham Palace whenever we like? Nope. How much was spent on renovating it? I think roughly 350mil+? The royal family owns Buckingham Palace, we do not, yet we pay for its upkeep despite it being owned by multi-billionaires. If you're OK with that then more fool you.

The Queen is the biggest landowner in the world.
Theoretically she can claim any land (no exceptions) in the commonwealth countries (which includes Canada) .
Yeah let's support her 🙄

Respect is earned. I can’t think of a single thing the royals have achieved to earn my respect.
I have utmost respect for those who have served in the forces, but the royals?

{Ed001's Note - I will never understand patriotism. A concept invented by medieval rulers in order to get the peasant class to die for them.}
