This game v Napoli will show how much we need an additional wide man imo. The fact we have Fabinho Hendo Milner Ox and Gini all starting with Ox and Milner trying to provide the width just seems wrong. 5 CM's all similar all starting with just Origi up front shows how much we miss out front 3.

You would not have all 3 out normally.

Were in for a bad Start to the season us I can feel it. Signing a player could've given us a buzz, the first 10 games is just going to be a Champions League hangover.

Fingers crossed our front three do not, at any stage of the season, pick up even minor injuries.

I have to admit to being surprised that Liverpool have not strengthened whatsoever this season. It is a little worrying. Hopefully Liverpool do not struggle and stagnate as a result. All teams around us have strengthened and we are going to have to rely on fortune and quality that has been present since last year.

Ox, is going to take a while to refind his form, and would not be surprised if he picks up little injuries throughout the season, which happens when you rupture your ACL.

Lallana, there's no way he will be fit for long stretches and, when he does come back, it takes a while for him to refind his form.

Brewster, a young man who will see few opportunities outside of cup competitions. Particularly with Origi firmly placed behind Firmino. Origi has done himself a great service last year but I still have many concerns about him.

Robbo and Trent also need to stay injury free, the replacements available simply cannot match their undoubted contribution. They are big players and compiment our style perfectly.

Personally I suspect Liverpool will be safely slotted into the top 4 and, depending on injuries, will compete on numerous fronts. However, challenging City will be a momentous task, especially without fresh blood and enthusiasm.

Without our front 3 we’re worse than Burnley.

Everyone is raging on about Ox being a new signing, he’s just back from a serious injury and it can take time to get back into the swing of things not just physically but mentally too.

We were lucky with Gomez, after his injury he got straight back into the groove.

I think it’s difficult judging the team without the front three, as they all defend from the front.

Potentially not having Mane at the start of the season is a real concern for me, it’s a tough start.

I'm not normally one to make conclusions about one half of a pre-season friendly, but we cannot play our first game against Norwich with Wijnaldum, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Origi as our front three.

Ox (apart from about 4-5 minutes before the end of the half) has been shockingly bad, albeit a bit out of character for him.

Hopefully at least one of Firmino or Salah will be back for the start of the season, as we cannot go into the season with this front three. I'm guessing that it will prevent Wilson going out on loan as he's going to be needed at the start of the season.

If neither Salah or Firmino are back for Norwich, I'd start with Origi (left), Brewster (centre) and Wilson (right) .

We need to remember it’s just a friendly chaos and not get carried away here the fact we are 2 down at Half time but Klopp must see we need an addition or 2. Zero width at all midfield is packed no body running beyond. Thoughts so far Ed001? Bet your not watching mate but thoughts generally please?

{Ed001's Note - it is a friendly. It makes absolutely no difference. Do people forget Voronin was sensational in pre-season? The games are just there to get players fit nothing else. It takes a few competitive games to get them actually match sharp.}

Not the best pre season we’ve ever had. This time next week we will be playing a full strength City team for a trophy. Yes it’s the charity shield but it’s still a trophy. I know someone said it’s highly unlikely for all front 3 to be out but at one point last season we were without Bobby and Mo for a period of time.

Wilson should probably have started, essentially we’ve played a five man midfield with little width, we also haven’t held onto the ball very well in midfield and been exposed by Insigne’s quality. Doesn’t help that we have Mignolet who is almost like giving any team a one goal head start as he had a very poor starting position for their first goal. As it is, our supposed winger target would have not made any impact as he’s only effective running at fullbacks who leave space to run into and given that Napoli have sat back, he’d have offered nothing else we haven’t seen already.

my thoughts on the first half. lazy, which has pretty much been every match this pre season. when we play like that, our type of players who are all about running around lose half their quality. I'm not worried about the start of the season though. I can see why ox wants to be a midfeilder, he has no confidence, skill, whatever it is to recieve the ball in tight spaces when up front. it looks like klopp is choosing that llineup for city. personally i'd swap ox for milner and play brewster in the front 3. klopp says brewster will play this season but ox and even wini look ahead of him in a front 3.

Ox showing his Arsenal form. Origi will never be a prolific goal scorer. Mignolet is just as he always has been. Everyone seems off the pace which I am sure will be sorted by the time we play Norwich.

28 Jul 2019 18:29:11
I’ve said before that I’m not arsed about the charity shield. It’s a friendly not a real trophy. As long as we beat Norwich that’s all that matters.

I agree Ed it is a friendly and will take a few games but we have now played 4 testing games against decent opposition and performances against BVB Sevilla Sporting and now Napoli have not been great and it does highlight to us all how much we miss our front 3.

{Ed001's Note - no it does not. It highlights nothing. It shows nothing. The result and performance is utterly irrelevant.}

It's a friendly, we could loose 5-0 or win 5_0 and it will not make a jot of difference come the new season. What would happen if the likes of Wilson and Lallana scored a hat trick every game, would you want them to start against Norwich ahead of Salah, Mane and Firminho, no because these games are there to help match fitness, make people sharper and work on new formations and tatics. Some people need to get a grip and see it for what it is. A run out for commercial purposes. I mean they could play the likes of Tranmere every pre season game and win 6, 7 or 8 nil. That would do the squad a world of good wouldn't it? Erm no.

21.) 28 Jul 2019
28 Jul 2019 18:50:03
Can't say its anything but disheartening with us being so close to the start of the season. Looking a mile off. guess we just have to rely on our starting 11 when they are all back.

22.) 28 Jul 2019
28 Jul 2019 19:03:08
I wasn't complaining about the result at all, just an observation that Gini, Ox and Origi isn't a viable front three. Surely when you're lining up for these pre-season games, you're using the tactics and players that you're intending to go forward with.

I really couldn't care less about the result. Those three are not a viable front three option going into the season.

On the plus side, I really thought that Hoever looked very comfortable and showed really good composure even though he's a right sided player playing on the left; Brewster looked very sharp and albeit a Cruyff turn too many, Lallana does look suited to the holding midfield role. I also thought that the new lad Eliott showed real promise and has a very good first touch for such a young lad.

I'm with Ed01. Preseason means nothing. Highlights nothing. Validates nothing and the result is irrelevant. Oh and can I add that the Community Shield is nothing more than a glorified preseason friendly where teams can make up to 5/ 6 changes. The result will mean nothing for either team regarding how good or bad a season either one will have. It will mean, foretell and/ or prove nothing. Let the moaning and constant panic attacks begin.
