ed001 can you add Alan Hansen to the player profiles please. One of my top 3 Liverpool players of all time. the Young fans that never see him player are very unfortunate. They could have seen a defender at the next level to VVD. Now he was a player that we seem to never able to replace as since his retirement we have not won the league. And seems to get left out when they bring up the best defenders ever. 8 league titles and 3 European Cup in 13 years and am sure without the ban we could have had at least 1 more.

{Ed001's Note - he is in there don't worry, best centre back I can remember seeing.}

Not a million miles away from VvD but offered more going forward. Was never phased and always up for carrying the all into midfield. Big Virg could get there one day - possibly the nearest thing in today’s game to a player like Hansen. Would you agree Ed?

{Ed001's Note - probably yes.}

Beautiful defender, graceful.

The best defender I’ve ever seen live was John McLelland who played for Watford in mid 80s. He was like VVD, Hansen and Lawrenson rolled in to one - he read the game with ease and was fast and strong - can any of the Ed's remember him or anyone else on here?

{Ed001's Note - never heard of him sorry.}

John McLelland? Northern Ireland international, played for about 100 different teams? Right up there with Hansen and Co!

Listen, I'm a Northern Ireland fan and I love nothing more than bigging them up but it's a bit of a stretch, even for me to put big John in such high esteem, but I love your praise all the same. 👍👍.

to say he was VVD, Hansen and Lawrenson rolled in to one seems a bit of a stretch when the highlight of his career was playing for Watford. Am sure he would have been picked up by one of the big teams if he was anywhere near any of them 3. Growing up the only defender I can remember that was close to Hansen would have been Paul McGrath and who new how good he could have been without his demons. ed001 what did you think about Paul McGrath.

Whilst I don't disagree with any of the platitudes regarding Hansen, I have to say that the job of defending got harder after the back pass rule.
It is harder still with the game being less physical.
Hansen would thrive today, but many old school players would not. BTW that scenario is reversed for some players who would not be able to handle the physicality of football in the 70s and 80s.

I saw McLelland live over 50 times when living in Watford (my dad was a fan) and I used to watch Hansen when lived in Southport and I can assure you if you’d seen him live that many times you’d think differently.
