well guys,

It does seem unlikely now that we will come away with a trophy this season - not a definitely situation, but being honest, it is the way things are looking.

Even without a trophy we can take satisfaction in a great season, but the question I have is what impact will this have on some of our players - particularly Salah and Mane?

Every player wants to win trophies, and the bottom line is LFC has not won one since 2007.

Salah and Mane are in their prime now, and will they be content to stay in the hope that we can eventually get across the trophy winning line?

It would be a shame if we lost any of our players, because of our inability to be winners.

Look at Couts - he has had a quite turbulent time at Barca, but will still finish his first 2 seasons there with league title, and probably a CL winners medal.

I would welcome your comments.

It’s been a very good season in the league and champions league. All credit to the manager and players for that. 👏

Not gaining a trophy is a big blow, one way of keeping your top players is by winning honours. We have to make that step soon.
It’s one of the reasons I get frustrated by our lack of effort in the domestic cups. I think it’s an error. Winning is a habit and making that extra step from competing to winning is hard to do. You have to start simple and I think winning the league cup or the FA cup is the way to build that confidence and winning mentality.
Not many teams go from no success to premier or champions league winners - exception being Leicester.

All in all though it’s been a very good season, so nearly a great one.

KBL if we don't win a trophy it can never be a great season for LFC. We spent the money to win trophies. We have progressed greatly and would love progression next year to compete in all competitions. But like you I am very worried that Salah and or Mane could look to leave.

Still time to make it a great season though.

Liverpool won a trophy in 2012.

I agree with Ron 100%. We need trophies in the cabinet and the 2 domestic cups would have been a good start. For me there isn't a second place award, 97 points or not. Lfc used to be about silverware, we need to get back to that and not be so dismissive of the minor trophies.

Exactly Smeg, no trophies for 6 seasons - potentially 7.
Before that it was 5 seasons too.
Not many top players hang around at clubs for 5 barren seasons.

Agree with everything you've said Ron. I've said on here, repeatedly, how p**sed off I was with our attitude to the FA cup, forfeiting our place. I hope we address that next season and also make a better fist of it in the Carabao, or whatever it's called.

Very disappointing to end the season trophy less again. We play pretty football, score plenty of goals and don’t concede many yet we we again a nearly team. Was at a meeting today with work and there was varied supporters of different clubs including West Ham, Spurs, Birmingham forest Sheffield Wednesday all of which couldn’t wait to take the piss out of me the fact that we had “bottled it” and wasn’t going to win anything! Part of me thought how sad it is that fans of smaller clubs get off on the fact that we haven’t won anything regardless of there own teams being low down on the prem or struggling in the championship. The other part of me thought sadly they are correct.

There are only 4 major trophies to play for each season and we prioritized the 2 big ones and are not far off both.

We spent allot of money but not as much as the teams that look like they will be the eventual winners so all in all what else do you expect?

Expect us to win everything every season? Truth is the club are now back challenging which is very important financially and also means that they are doing the most important thing really which is keeping us happy week in week out.

Trophies are lovely at the end of the season and are a nice thing to have for the fans to brag about but its the weekly happiness that i see just as important and that's what this team is bringing us.

So many fans are now falling into the 'United fan' way of thinking at that is that winning the trophies is everything and to me that's wrong others have different opinions but there are 20 teams in the premier league and 6 of those are capable of winning the league. Countless teams are capable of winning the champions league so to come close in both is a success as far as I am concerned.

Keep up the faith and keep supporting don't let missing out get us down. We would have won the league 99 times out of 100 any other season (except last season) lol

YNWA.

Got to agree with all the posts,
Somewhere along the line we need to be WINNERS. if we don’t want to lose our top players. if we miss out this year the pressure will be cranked up next year, and that is only natural, we’ve had the investment and I’m pretty sure the owners would like to see a return on there investment, which is only natural.

Also will there be a COACH WELCOME on Tuesday, would be fantastic,
Also if your thinking of booing SUAREZ and COUTINHO, forget it, ignore them, channel all your energies into supporting the REDMEN for the full 90 minutes.

I think it has been a fabulous season where we have made a huge leap from last year. I think the domestic cups were given the priority they deserved. Its not like winning the Carabao or FA cup is going to have any bearing on whether we retain our top players or in recruiting top players. Champions League participation makes clubs far more attractive than winning domestic cups. This Liverpool team has a winning mentality and is just unlucky to have met a record breaking Man City side. The league title race isn't over yet or the CL semi final but regardless of those outcomes this season has been a success in my opinion. Klopp is doing a fantastic job.

Markp08 there not dropping any points mate I’m afraid. It’s all but done and just a formality. And to anyone who said I’m being negative and I need to support another club are ridiculous. I am just being honest as it hurts the fact another season so lose but nothing to show for it.

It’s a difficult one. There’s people that say we don’t need to add too much to the squad next season but if we want to challenge for the domestic cups, As well as the league and CL Ithink we need more quality in depth. City have a couple of quality players for each position, Chelsea were the same back when Jose first came to the PL.

Liverpool have been brilliant this season absolutely brilliant. City are the best team the premier league has ever had and we're 1point behind with nowhere near the resources of them.
I don't feel disappointed at all just proud of how Liverpool have done. Fans of other clubs saying we've bottled it and gloating because we got beat in a champions league semi 1st leg at Barcelona, would kill to have their team even reach the semi's.
I believe a few quality recruitment's in the summer and we'll be great. Ask any real city supporter and they'll tell you they're worried about us.
An early goal Tuesday and you ever know, I thought Barcelona looked rattled until they got the 2nd. score early see what they're made off.

I fully understand the frustration levels on here and i share the disappointment if we end up trophyless. One of the posters up the page though said it doesn't matter if we have 97 points or not, if were still losers. c'mon,97 points would be the 3rd highest total in English football history, some leagues have been won with 20 pts less. We were 25 points behind a team who earned 100 points last season and with just a couple of games remaining we've cut that down to one, huge strides made. The original poster asked what it would mean for Mané and Salah, well i love these two players and realise what good signings they've been but football is a team game and if we come up short it will be because "ALL" players have made the odd mistake. Take the other night for example, if Manè and Salah take their guilt edged chances its a totally different result. Its not like five years ago when Suarez and Sturridge could point their finger at the defense, we've conceded just 20 goals. If anything Big Virg and Robbo could be throwing a look at the forward players for the barren spells all three of them have had this year.

I’m in the same camp as Lord Ha Ha, Little Naby and other posters - it’s been a fantastic season so far and it’s not done yet. Klopp is an elite manager and I am convinced he will bring us trophies. I think the foundations of the team are here for a while yet - Alisson, TAA, Robbo, VVD, Gomez, Fabinho, Keita, Hendo, Wijnaldum, Firmino, AOC - with talented youngsters like Brewster, Lewis and Jones hopefully coming through. Two or three judicious signings in the Summer and we will be set to go even further than we have this season. I accept that Salah (Ed002 has consistently reported on his position) and Mane might look to move on before long but what the heck - Liverpool has a great record of signing/ producing outstanding strikers and can do so again. The future is bright, the future is that lovely dark red of Liverpool’s kit.
By the way, the intelligent, thoughtful posts in this string are what make this my go-to Liverpool website. Things got a little fractious in the aftermath of the Barcelona defeat but like all families we can fall out occasionally but never for long. I will be going to Anfield on a Tuesday with hope in my heart. YNWA.

Whilst it’s nice to have a more rational discussion (a couple of days ago it was all extremes! ), being a fan for so many years has taught me not to give up until the fat lady sings.

Adele May be warming up (Ed025’s words, not mine! ) but we are still the only English team left who can do a CL and EPL double. It’s extremely unlikely we’ll win either tournament, but it’s not impossible.

I’m not giving up yet.

IMO, We have had a brilliant season, no doubt and if we don't win anything then, it would not be by want of trying. We gave it our best and our all and if that is not good enuff then so be it. The fact that we went from being 25 points behind City last season to being at their throats this season, is phenomenal in it of itself. I remember many on here and in punditry saying earlier this season we did not have the team to match City or that City would go undefeated. How did that work out exactly?

If we don't win the CL or PL this season, it would have largely been by the finer margins if you accept that LFC could have beaten City at the Etihad were it not for 11 mm. Or that City would have dropped points had it not been for the ball crossing Burnley's line by again, 8mm. Same with the CL. Had Salah, Mane or Milner taken their chances then we are not singing the same tune of frustration. I also hear many blaming the draws for us prolly not winning the PL. Where did we get those draws exactly? I know. At Utd, Chelsea, vs City at home. The WH games, we did not play well enuff to win and that can happen. Vs Leicester, we did not play good enuff either even tho we should have had a stone wall penalty. These are the fine margins we are dealing with.

These margins are what we have to rise above right now. I remember when we got thumped at Stoke 5-1 or at home by WH 3-0. Those days will NEBR happen to us again under Klopp. We are a GREAT team that is not even the finished article yet and that is exciting in itself. If the likes of Salah and Mane are pissed off about what's going on then maybe they should take a hard look at themselves first cos had they taken their chances, the CL would still be on right now. Can't blame Klopp for that cos he is not going to go on the pitch and their chances for them. Nothing is decided yet so we go again and finish the job. Where that takes us, we shall see. YNWA!

Being brilliant is kind of irrelevant if you don't turn that in to trophies. You can never be happy coming second, otherwise where's is the drive.

And of course players who don't "support" the club will leave, as people have mentioned, coutinho's had a awful season, but has won the league in spain, and looks well on for the CL. Players like mane and salah are special and we won't keep them if we come second.

21.) 04 May 2019

we haven't done anything to justify fans calling for a manager's head for not winning a trophy. People still talk about Liverpool as if this is the 80s, wake up it's not and we haven't been that club since we stopped being serial winners of anything in the 90s.

For me it is really simple - the bottom line is that club need to be competing for trophies year in year out. early cup exits, bouncing between 5th - 7th isn't good enough. But imo, 3 years consecutive top 4, a title challenge, consecutive years in the CL semi-finals stage is fine for me to be happy with Klopp leading us into the next 3-5 years. We have an identity and a togetherness that we didn't pre-Klopp and can't understand why would we give that up unless we lost that.

22.) 04 May 2019
04 May 2019 10:08:19
Never saw anyone in the thread asking for klopp to go? Anyway, I think it's not a binary view of our season and as fans we can take a few. I agree, there are many things to be proud if this season, with us matching city nearly stride for stride. Then there is the potential 97 pts, which some people seem to think is a given, which again is testament to the progress the team has made. Also I agree with some that watching the team has been enjoyable and that is rightly what any club should strive to do, entertain the fans.

Ultimately though, elite clubs are judged by history on the trophies they have won. No one tells stories to their kids of the teams that have admirably come second, or consistently fails to win trophies.

We are close and with the right signings, while keeping our best players and a big dollop of luck we can buck the trend next season.

However, regrettably I think we have shot ourselves in the foot this season with two or three crunch games where we didn't quite bottle it, but we maybe choked and that has cost us the chance to claim some bragging rights.

{Ed001's Note - why do people come out with this nonsense about people not telling their kids about them playing well but failing? Sport is full of those kind of stories - my mother's generation still talk in awe of the 1974 Netherlands side that failed to win a World Cup. My grandad used to do the same with regards to Hungary. Newcastle fans will rave about the Keegan era.

It is not just in sports either. Glorious failure is, in some respects, more celebrated than actual success in every arena. They wrote books and made films about the attempt to take the bridge at Arnhem, despite it failing at the last. Every champion is only as good as the opposition they beat to win.

Have none of you ever talked about how close we came under Rafa? Or five years ago under Rodgers? The media is full of those two stories every time we look like mounting a challenge. People do tell stories to their kids about teams that have admirable come second, I know, I have had to sit through thousands of them regarding 74!}

23.) 04 May 2019
04 May 2019 11:47:32
Fair point ed, I concede that failure is most definitely celebrated lol.

{Ed001's Note - I do want to win trophies but it is an odd trait that failure is just as celebrated as success. In fact in some cases more so. Everyone remembers Holland's 74 team, but very few remember the winners. People remember Keegan's entertainers, but the Man Utd team that actually won is not really memorable for fans other than United ones. Not sure why that happens.}
