TAA and Robertson need some stiffer competition to help them raise their game and take them to the next level.

Both fullbacks are key to our system and our attacking play and they aren’t positions that teams normally chop and change regularly with success. In this day and age full backs are not cheap either and if we are looking at players that are of the calibre of Robbo and Trent then that could be 30 mill plus apiece for 2 players who would spend considerable amount of time on the bench. Best case would be buying a player that could play rb and lb to a high standard but there’s not many if any out there. A lot is being made of some of our youngsters so hopefully some of them can step up and give both fullbacks a rest when needed. Ed has mentioned in the past the Trent could move into midfield so if we are going to spend on a full back perhaps a rb which would kill 2 birds with one stone.

{Ed001's Note - both Spurs and Man City have rotated full-backs regularly, when they have had the option to do so and it does not seem to have held either back.}

ED001 very true that mate but I think City are an exception to the cause due to the amount of money they have spent on all of their full backs. From the spurs fans I know they get quite irritated with the full backs chopping and changing and have told me it’s affected the progress of Trippier and especially Rose who they believe has digressed. What full backs would you like to see us go for Ed? Apologies if this has been asked before If it has I’ve missed it.

{Ed001's Note - Trippier has no progress to make because he is not that good. Rose regressed (digressed is a completely different meaning) because of injuries which were put down to him being overworked initially. Fans may well get irritated but the full-backs are the ones covering the most ground and most likely to suffer burnout. As for City, they have one left back but still rotated in midfielders to give him a rest before his injuries. Not sure how that makes them an exception? They were doing it before Pep arrived as well.

I would love to see us go for Wan-Bissaka, though it seems highly unlikely and Gaya, though again unlikely.}

The answer has to be developing and also buying versatile, quick players that are able to cover several positions - CB that can go to FB, FB that can play higher up, and a player that can potentially cover the front three or at least both wide roles.
Assuming Moreno leaves, that’s a left position required, RB not necessarily as urgent with Gomez’ return but it also depends on Milner, CB possibly depending on any outs, and a front man.
I really hate the thought of Coutinho coming back to the Premiership to play for another side, if he moves let’s hope it’s to another European team.

The way we use our FBs is particularly important to our attacking threat, and is also very demanding on them. We’re lucky to have Trent and Robbo but we definitely need a backup (or two) with Moreno prone to errors, and Clyne incapable of providing the attacking outlet we require.

Would love to see Wan Bissaka brought in and Lewis stepping up from the academy.

Ed001 I meant City as an exception due to their financial resources which allows them to have 2 players of similar quality / value for each position. Ie are Liverpool in a position to spend 50-60 mill plus on 2 rotating full backs for next season? Would be great if we are. Cheers for the digress correction, I couldn’t have messed that one up even more if I tried lol.

{Ed001's Note - but if you look at City's full-backs they are not really similar quality. Walker and Mendy are defo better than the rotation options. Danilo is barely good enough and the options at left back are an attacking midfielder in Zinchenko and the always injured and not very good central midfielder Delph. To be honest, full-backs do not have to be particularly outstanding in a team that gives them freedom to get forward as the defending is done by centrebacks and midfield. They are little more than a warm body defensively, so having a great one is not as important to the performance. Especially for a team like City, who often do not even use full-backs to get forward and provide width anyway.}

Well said, Ed01. To add to your comments, City's fullbacks tuck in as midfielders esp. when playing against weak opposition who don't attack them. This allows them to have their midfielders to overload on either flank along with their wide forwards to heap more pressure on the opposition out wide. LFC do not do that with their fullbacks.

We play a very narrow game esp. with the front three so the width has to come from the FB's and quality delivery is key at this point. Then the double pivot in midfield provide cover for them whenever we lose the ball and are facing a counter. Therefore, we need FB's who can do exactly what Robbo and TAA can do or just about and hopefuly, we can get them this summer.
