Been reading through a few posts and read in the echo the other day that a CB will likely be signed in the summer. I have no way of actually rating some of the names thrown around (de ligt and upemacano) as I haven't seen them play in all honesty just heard people rave about them. I agree with ed001 whole heartedly tho. Gomez and vvd looked the best CB partnership around its jus a shame that Joe is injured at the mo. My question for you ed001 if you may tho is what would you do? For me it's a no brainer when Gomez and vvd are fit they play, simple as. But what then I don't really rate lovren matip slightly more than him but if we being honest Gomez, lovren and matip don't have the greatest injury record. So I'm struggling to see what we should do. Spend on a player that is happy to sit on bench whilst vvd and Gomez fit? Rely on youth maybe but if an long term injury does occur have to throw them in for a long space of time? Leave as is in hope that there 3 injury records improve? Its a bit of a conundrum if you ask me. Lol.

{Ed001's Note - offload Matip or Lovren and bring in someone to fight for the place with Gomez and VVD.}

Cheers my man, seems simple enough let's hope we manage to do it in summer.

IMO Alderweireld would be the person I would bring in. Do you think he’s got the right attributes for the job, Ed001, including how much he would cost given he’s entering the last year of his deal?

{Ed001's Note - certainly a fantastic defender who could also add cover for right back and defensive midfield. Seems the ideal player to be honest. Except he does tend to also miss large portions of each season through injury. So no, not for me, but only because we need someone who can stay fit.}

Been thinking on this like everyone else. If possible Hummels could be a good shout for a reasonable fee obviously.

I’d forget De Ligt, Upemecanno and Koulibaly as they aren’t going to happen. Far too expensive and wouldn’t be happy as third choice.

{Ed001's Note - Hummels is just another Matip, but better on the ball and just as injury prone. And slower.}

If he has to challenge VVD and Gomez, he must be -
a) very quick
b) comfortable on the ball.

So who would you want Liverpool to sign for the role then Ed001? I personally think we missed the best option in Pavard. Would Tah interest you at all?

{Ed001's Note - I have no idea mate who I would like I have not looked into it, but Tah seems a good suggestion. Konate is the one that comes to mind though.}

Might sound mad but I still have faith in lovren. Gomez would be my starter next to vvd. I think we should have kept klavan or find another lcb, coz it's when vvd is injured or suspended that we will struggle.

Ed, are any of the youngsters ready to fill that role instead of buying another player? Phillips perhaps?

{Ed001's Note - not really Gomez is the only youngster ready really.}

Ed is correct. We cannot replace injury-prone players with another injury-prone player even tho said injury-prone player (Alderweireld) is the real deal.

On another note, Ed01 what do you think about Ante Rebic as an option in attack?

{Ed001's Note - not seen him play mate sorry.}

I think Philips injury was at a really unfortunate time, he had a great pre-season. i was fully expecting him to get a chance at some point if he had kept fit.

I think it maybe a bit more difficult given the length of injury but hopefully can recover well and keep pushing!

i agree both matip and lovren are both too injury prone. I know people have bad things to say about lovren but whilst he is a bit of a fool sometimes you can't question his commitment and slightly admire from what he has grown up from!

ultimately we shouldn't be getting a player to play ahead of gomez, so we can rule out Koullibay.

but someone who can push gomez and lovren would be ideal, someone who is a bit versatile and can cover other roles! .

What about Coady Ed’s n Reds? I haven’t seen Wolvers play much so don’t know if he would suit our current style? Be nice to get another scouser (back) in the team!

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware of interest and would he return to sit on the bench?}

Good point Ed002. I was wondering whether he would prefer 20-25 games at his boyhood club or 40+ at Wolves?

If there’s no interest then it’s a moot point anyway.

Thanks for the answer 😀.

{Ed002's Note - Maybe he wants to play for a club who wanted him and gave him a chance rather than the boyhood club who didn’t want him, didn’t give him a chance and have no interest in him now. Of Liverpool were to give him that many games and VvD were fit then it would likely be the end of Gomez as he would be relegated to third choice at best.}

I’m with Zed on the Alderweireld opinion.

He would be a quality signing at the right stage of his career to not impact on Joe’s development. Indeed I think it would help Joe’s development as well as providing genuine competition for places.
