I am only worried about Napoli. They are a great group of players and now with one of the worlds best manager there they are tough opposition. Also Naples is a tough place to go.

PSG - cake walk at anfield esp as they have tuchel.
RSB- don't know much about them but mane and keita do. historic stadium though. but we should get 6 points against them.

I am confident that if we play to our ability we should get out of that group, but no teams are to be underestimated.

Relatively short hops those away games as well, no bonkers trips to Turkey or deepest Ukraine!

Ancelloti to is really not a great manager

Wonder how Napoli and PSG feel about having to play LFC

We are back at the top table and we can compete with anyone in the competition

We are one of half a dozen sides with a realistic chance of winning the competition

Bring it on.

Respect the opposition but fear no one. We are Liverpool.

Why do Keita and Mane know a lot more than Red Star Belgrade?

Akrubbish, Red Star Belgrade are not where Mane and Keita came from that was RBS in Austria.

Ancelotti not a great manager? His track record begs to differ. I love Klopp to bits but I wish his career haul of trophies was as good as Ancelotti's.

Think you're getting mixed up between Red Star and Red Bull, akrubbish.

Red Star is a team from Serbia that won the European cup in 1987 and 1991 but was torn apart due to the Yugoslavian war that began in 1992. They're only just managing to build themselves back up again from nothing. I read somewhere they used to get 100,000 fans in their stadium which got nicknamed the Maracana, because they 'used to play like Brazil', and had several stars that went to play for other top European teams across the continent when they disbanded. I'd always heard of them, but didn't know much about their story because of my age when everything happened. The fact that they are getting back now is on face value, a nice story of redemption, but I don't know the ins and outs.

Their stadium now holds 50,000 but they only get an average attendance of 5000 now. Hopefully games against some of Europes football royalty will inspire some fans to return the place their parents and grand parents used to love and hopefully, they are a partisan crowd (no pun intended) who don't give Mane and Keita anything other than football to think of (as Serbians have recently got a reputation for) . I'm intrigued.

{Ed001's Note - didn't they win the last European Cup before its rebranding as Champions League? 1991 I think?}

Napoli is not the same without Jorginho ( This is for people who are interested in knowing Napoli ) although they have signe Ruiz but they are missing Jorginho to bits. They are playing Hamsik at the base just like Gerrard did it for us in his final years. They are still a very good team plays brilliant attacking football. At home they are very hard to beat. It won’t be a cake walk.
PSG are a team with super stars ( Most of them are match winners ) .

Both these teams could relax in the league and focus compeltlty on the CL. While our fixture list are scary!

They may have done Ed, either then or the year after. I thought Marseille were the first Champions League winners in 1993, but I may well be wrong.

Their story is a crazy one which just shows how football means absolutely nothing in terms of life and humanity. From being top of the world one minute to having players and fans on opposing sides of a genocidal conflict they had no choice in the next. It's almost unimaginable. I imagine some of their old fans (depending on how many are left) will be quite emotional at having reached the top table again.

{Ed001's Note - is that the year Marseille fixed it?

It is an amazing story. Defo one worthy of a book, rather than an article.}

Lol some cons of the name there! .
yep i totally confused red star belgrade with red bull salzburg! apologies.
i knew the stadium macarena it was historic and there are two belgrade clubs, partizan and red star -- one of the most bitter rivalry in football.

as for PSG cake walk, i was talking at anfield, we will murder them just like we murdered real Madrid back in 2009.

Naples is a tough trip and i think they won't be easy at anfield either because they are a gritty team.

I have no idea of the circumstances regarding Marseille, ed. My knowledge stops at a bit of pub quiz trivia I’m afraid. You’ll have to educate me on that one!

Maybe if I get the time and inclination I’ll be able to get some proper research done and write something up on it. It’s a fascinating story. Unfortunately with the way UEFA is set up, I doubt they’ll get any further up the chain than say Shakhtar have managed. Saying that, there’s another club Struggling under the weight of politics.

{Ed001's Note - ah Marseille and Bernard Tapie is another deserving of a book mate. They got found to have been match fixing and I believe they were stripped of the title.}

Cheers Davey, I thought it was worth posting about. Not your average football story.

Maybe when your old and grizzled you can find the time to write a compendium of football oddities Ed and put all these stories in. That would definitely be worth a read.

{Ed001's Note - I am going to start a new series on sporting villains soon, so Tapie will defo find his way into that one.}

The Red Star V Marseille European Cup final in 1991 was probably one of the worst football matches ever played. Anti-football at it's, erm, finest played by Red Star against a much better Marseille team (on paper) . Went to pens and Marseille blew it - probably knackered after having the ball for 120mins.
