The players have enjoyed celebrating for sure.
From a supporters point of view I wish I’d have had opportunity to watch paint dry!
Guess I’m not alone, hence 20,000 empty seats.
I love England and want us to win the tournament; it will be undervalued for me by lack of quality or effort by any teams or individual in Russia.

Do you not the the empty seats are due to political issues and threats of violence to English fans. Credit to those who have traveled.

Watching a team play square balls for 80 mins while the opposition wait for us to needlessly kick it out of play isn’t my idea of entertainment at a World Cup.

Give me some heavy metal football any day!

This WC does lack quality and excitement. Whenever I watched Eng played, I felt drowsy within 20mins. But hey, who knows, Eng might just win it in a very unfashionable way?

07 Jul 2018 19:20:17
True si but give me 2 0 wins all day too. There has been a fair bit of quality this world cup. Ronaldo hat trick early on, kane hat trick. The whole Mexican team. Lukaku against Brazil and kdb. The French team in general. Spain, Germany and Argentina were awful though.

Argentina v France was a very entertaining game of football. As was Japan v Belgium.

I think the World Cup has been great. Maybe I'm easy pleased?

Hi Prince Hendo:
Appreciate your replies and yes I do think England stand a very good chance of winning the World Cup.

However when your grandkids ask you about the great Lingard, Kane and Pickford (with the greatest respect) wouldn’t you rather tell them about Barnes, Gascoigne, Waddle, Shearer, Shilton, Gerrard, Scholes et al?

And how Bobby Fowler couldn’t even often get 5 mins as a sub?

Not once has this tournament got me out of my seat - and I took 2.5 weeks off to watch it!

When your coming off the back of watching our front 3, especially Salah season.

3, 4, 5, 6, 7 goals a game. Everything is going to look boring.

We were spoiled last year

I'm right because I've seen Kleenex sales have gone through the roof in Manchester. They weren't so spoiled last year 🤣🤣.

Why create such a negative post? Why even bother? If you haven’t enjoyed Spain v Portugal, Germany v Mexico, France v Argentina, Belgium v Japan, Belgium v Brazil then I feel sorry for you. If you haven’t enjoyed the drama of Russia v Spain, Argentina v Nigeria, South Korea v Germany, Sweden v Germany, England v Colombia then why do you watch football? Maybe stick to Rugby or Cricket.

07 Jul 2018 20:25:49
As a scotsman, it pains me to say it, but i thought England played the perfect game against Sweden. Controlled the entire game, Sweden never looked like scoring, and they probably conserved a bit of energy after what was a grueling game against Columbia. I don't think they'll win it all, but that squads done pretty well to reach the semis so far.

Been a few entertaining games this World Cup, none of which involved England though.
Then again I fell asleep during 2 games so I may have missed brazilesque skills from sterling and co during that time?
Speaking of sterling he’s having a stinker isn’t he, couldn’t hit a barn door that lad, maybe he needs to look at his tattoo to remind him to shoot?

In all honesty I don't really enjoy international football and don't really follow England all that much but I have watched this world cup and I have been entertained and think it's been a pretty good tournament.

England have also impressed me to be honest and have gained my respect again, doesn't matter who they have played they have got to the semis and England teams of old would have fell apart much much earlier playing the side teams.

Only game that deserves to mentioned in same breath as matches from 82 onwards for me is Belgium v Japan - the 2nd half exhibited all that the rest of this tournament has been missing:
Passion
Desire
Willingness

No one actually wants to be there.
I’m not a statistician but I’d guess there is more penalty box action in 2 prem games than in whole tournament so far!

Where are the Stoichcovs, Letchcovs, Amokachis, Elkairs, Zicos, Michaelichencos, Hagis of this generation?

They are in the viewfinder of your rose tinted time travelling telescope, Si B. '94 was the first World Cup I watched and this is the best of the bunch since. Upsets and shocks, close matches, competitiveness from start to finish great goals, successful implementation of a game changing technology, great fans, England doing well, what's not to like? To suggest players are not in the same league is to ignore the changes in the game since they all were playing. I've loved every minute.

By the way, the lowest ranked team and host have just equalised in the last couple of minutes of extra time to take it to penalties in the quarter final. Tell me that's not exciting and mean it?

Worst World Cup I can remember to be honest.

To all,

Love this site as it’s a true forum to express your own opinions and respectfully receive everyone else’s.

For me this has been a dire tournament to watch; but I do accept that some are enjoying it; maybe it is a generational thing?

For me football should be about 100% effort, heart, desire and skill.

All I’m seeing in Russia is negative, slow, side to side chess matches.

That said come next Sunday I’ll still be screaming my lungs out when Harry is lifting the trophy aloft!

Only complaint is teams endlessly knocking the ball about to get to pens. Has been a very entertaining affair nonetheless. Croatia England. got to say you guys look favorites given how comfortably you came through the game and the fact that their best players looked absolutely spent by the end. Mind you I picked Croatia to win the tournament before it started.

I’ve thoroghly enjoyed the World Cup. Unashamedly so.

I don’t care what club teams these boys play for, for this tournament I love all of them.

Also, did you say you took 2.5 weeks off work to watch football at home lol?

26.) 07 Jul 2018
07 Jul 2018 22:23:19
Angry B,

You’re 100% right, this isn’t the game I grew up on and that clouds my judgement.

I’m truly happy that you enjoy the way the game is played now as I’m too old to be affected (other than watching on tv! )

My grandson just turned 2 though so looking forward to teaching him the beautiful game, my real concern is that it won’t exist for long without any passion anymore!

Your opinion proves that passion is still there, just in a different way.

Sorry OP you keep reeling off names from the past whilst neglecting the excellent football of players like De Bruyne, Hazard, Kante, Mbappe, Godin, Modric, Pickford and Kane to name a few. I’ve watched every World Cup since Italia 90 and this is the best since USA 94.

Hi Kramer,

You’ve kind of hit my point on the head!

All the players you’ve named are fantastic; so why have they been so disappointing for the last 3 weeks?

The World Cup should be the highlight of a players career; not something they have to endure every 4 summers until their league season starts again.

Good man Si. Takes an open mind to see both sides and glad you're still supporting, even if you're not enjoying fully what you're watching. Hopefully the trophy comes home and gives everyone something to cheer nonetheless.

07 Jul 2018 23:23:57
Si B, you seem to have missed my point, these players have all played well at this World Cup, maybe you haven’t been watching properly!

32.) 08 Jul 2018
08 Jul 2018 08:33:30
In terms of outright quality it cvould well be argued that it hasn't been a great world cup. In terms of drama though, and tension, and theatre? I think it's been very good - certainly more interesting than I thought it would be. I guess the solution for you Si B is to simply turn off the TV, no ones forced to watch it eh.

When Ireland do get to World Cup tournaments. We usually get out of the group stages. European, less so but still it’s quite a feat with the pool we have to choose from. As for fans, they are legendary and I would doubt there are any better in the world. We go have a good time and insist everyone around us have a good time too. It’s become a part of our culture. No Irish fan is ever going to start crap regardless of the result. It’s not something to be mocked, it’s something to be incredibly proud of.

Is it just me or can anyone actually remember England creating a chance from open play? I can’t. (Panama maybe)
To be fair we have played to our strengths which is set pieces but to say England have played well is a bit of a stretch.
