Hi all, not sure if this has been discussed but would be really interested to hear your thoughts.

I was out on the weekend with friends and got into a bit of a heated debate, where they were telling me I can't/ shouldn't support Liverpool because I am not from there and/ or don't live there (never have) .

Apparently you should ONLY support your local team (Cardiff in my case) .

It made me furious! But I didn't really have a good counter argument.

To be honest there's no good reason why I support Liverpool, other than the fact that Robbie Fowler was my idol when I was a kid. Is that enough?

I have never and will never be interested in my local team so I don't see why I would switch now.

I think it would be tragic if everyone only supported their local team and surely football wouldn't be such a global game (I'm thinking about the amount of fans Liverpool have in Asia/ Africa etc. ) .

What do you guys think, have my mates got a point?

I grew up watching Rush, Barnes and co. with my grandad. It was a thing of beauty and a special time the two of us shared. I’m from London but when I started supporting the Reds, I couldn’t have even told you where London was and when I found out, my allegiance was set.

I presume you meant Liverpool, coco? If you were from London but you didn't know where it was, it must have been a confusing time!

Fowler, counter argument is "I support with my heart first! "

I'm the same as you, my idols were Rushie and Grob when I first started supporting Liverpool, and I was then living in (and born in) London.

Been my team ever since, and the more I find out about it and the more I get to know fellow supporters, I made the absolute right (albeit lucky! ) choice all those years ago.

I'd rather genuinely love my team than just follow it like one of a herd of sheep - especially apt given you're from Cardiff ;-) :D.

Its a global game. Liverpool is the name and location of the club. Its a long, long time since the players came from the same city as the club so why should the fans? You choose your allegiance at age 4 and a half and you never waver.

Football, as a sport, elicits emotion and emotional responses. Therefore who you support is/ should be based on an emotional response and not a geographical context. I support Liverpool due to the emotional impact watching the 1986 FA cup final with my older brother had on me. He already supported Liverpool as a 5 year old I wanted to join in with his celebration.
For me who you support is based on that childhood memory and emotion, geography be damned.

I’m with you on that Lazarou, as a 9 year old watching the 1971 cup final against Arsenal ‘dam you Charlie george’ I was smitten from that moment. Lucky for me it was the beginning of our glory years, so growing up at that age in that era of our club, I was spoilt rotten. Needless to say I’ve been a red ever since, always have always will.
