Butland is an improvement on mignolet, he’s homegrown, stoke have been relegated which will limit the transfer fee, and he certainly has potential as a goalkeeper who prior to his nasty injury 2 seasons ago looked like he would be England’s number one for the tournament.

Personally I (and most i am sure) would prefer a world class keep bought in but there just aren’t many out there.

Karius has been good since coming in and it may be more prudent to keep faith with him and have JB as competition rather than try and oust Karius for a keeper who is potentially no better .

I understand what you’re saying Navy, but Pickford was relegated last season and cost 30mil. Hopefully his injuries have an impact on his value, as I wouldn’t want to spend fortunes on a backup/ no1 challenger.

I’d like to see Reina come in a coaching capacity for Karius. I think his passion and experience could be huge. Not sure about Butland though! Not a fan IMO.

I can't see us signing Butland for less than £25m. Stoke will look at what Sunderland got for Pickford, then look at Butland who's relatively young for a 'keeper, an England international, and contracted to 2021. If we keep the price down to the same as Pickford, I'd be surprised. Plus I doubt that Butland would join us to sit on the bench even if we got him for 50p.

He is not coming to sit on the bench. I can only conclude he's going to at least be given a chance to displace Karius as no. 1. And in my view, he's not improvement. He's got different strengths, possibly a bit more consistent, but overall no improvement. If anything Karius suits the way we play better.

S[pot on, SR. I would take Reina as a mentor for Karius. Butland is not coming here to sit on the bench for someone who he may think, is not better than him and frankly if you want Karius to improve, you don't bring in someone that young to pressure him IF you want Karius to succeed. Big mistake if we waste that money if we try to sign him.
