So if Stevie Gerrard is the next Rangers manager, how do we feel about it? Could have benefits for us. Yes big risk for him personally, Rangers is a massive club with a massive global fan base, huge expectations but non the less maybe in turmoil in the boardroom. Let me make my points why it's a good move in my mind. We know Klopp is 2 years into a 6 year deal and is expected to see out his contact, and maybe a little beyond. So the top job is in essence off the table for 5 years. Stevie could stay in the youth setup admittedly but the gulf between u23s and Premier League is so vast. He could go and manage say MK Dons, Oxford United. He may have success getting promoted to the Championship and doing well in that division, but could he go from MK Dons straight to Liverpool? If he does well at Rangers maybe gets closer to Celtic first and then beats them to titles, you could make a great shout for him to be Klopp's successor in 5 years? He has a point to prove to Rodgers also, when he left in 2016 he probably would not of done so if offered a coaching role or a future at the club, that offered never materialised because I think Brendan felt maybe threatened by his presence in the background. In the immediate time it could be a good loan option for a few of the fringe players too good for the u23s, but maybe not getting the minutes they need in the first team. Woodburn, Solanke, Wilson for example could get experience of playing in the gold fish bowl in which Rangers is so similar to Liverpool whilst also improving confidence and finding there true levels! And if Stevie was to ask you to come and play for him and help him topple the mighty Celtic got to be tempting right! Some may say Scottish football isn't good enough and won't help these boys, but I'd argue that it didn't do our Record signing much harm in his early 20s. So you could look at it like we're loaning our future manager out, and some of the future stars together! Ed's what's your view on this appointment, good move for Stevie? Good loan option for Woodburn etc?

{Ed001's Note - I wouldn't send any of our better youngsters up there, no. As for Gerrard, personally he needs to go somewhere because he clearly is only interested in results and that is not what the club needs from a youth coach. It would do everyone good if he went and got some experience elsewhere and succeeded or failed on his own, rather than having the crutch of being Liverpool legend to prop him up. Then we can see what he is about and if he has what it takes.}

Hardly any manager Ever has it plain sailing. He will go there and struggle, but if Gerrard can close the Celtic gap in quality then he might just pull it off.
It's only Brendan Rogers after all. Good luck to him.

noticed that about Gerrard too. For a youth coach, he talked too much about results for my liking. He even 'moaned' about his side being weakened because some were brought to the U23. I mean, seriously?

I continue to harbor reservations about him as a top level manager and for one, am in no hurry to have him as manager of Liverpool FC. If he shows the level of competence and gets the job on his merit, fair enough. I just don't buy the 'he's a hell of a player and he'll do well' argument.

{Ed025's Note - im with you sg..

happy to see him leave hope he does well but for me would rather see someone like xabi become boss out of all the ex players as he is a nice guy off the pitch as well as on it
just my opinion guys so don't get upset.

There should be other credentials to become a LFC manager not just an ex player or legend. We as a club are moving in the right direction, we need to take all our decision in every department and every level with lot of thinking and without any emotional attachment. Gerrard the youth manager is just a young manager learning his trade and i will not even consider or put him in the same sentence as a senior manager as i don't want us to go back to the Souness era and start the process from scratch again.
We as a club have the hope of regaining back our lost PORCH and should not jeopardize that for any player, ex player legend.

I can see your point but I'd agree with ed01 and stay clear of sending any promising youngsters there. No disrespect to the Scottish league, but I'd prefer to send our loans out to championship level, where there are at least half a dozen teams at a good level and another half a dozen that are equivalent to Scottish league level.
Rangers are a big name from the past only at the moment, who knows what the future holds for them and maybe attracting Gerrard there could be a catalyst for it. The impression that I get from Gerrards side though is he's not willing to put the time and effort into learning the basics of management and thinks that because of his global name as a star player will carry him through. I suppose if he starts anywhere though, Rangers will at least be an education for him.

Spot on, Ed. At that age, youth development should be paramount, not results. SG needs to go prove himself elsewhere so he can be exposed to the realities and nuances of top level management instead of hiding at a club of which he is a legend. Being a legend is to me, the worst quality to have if being a manager at LFC is what you eventually want. We need a manager who is management-ready, proven and has shown his success elsewhere. If a legend is NONE of those things then, he should go get them first then he can apply for the position afterwards.

How about Pepjin Linders as a future manager? How’s it going for him in his first managerial role?

I think that Stevie G should go to Rangers, but I can see it all ending in tears,
I don't think that he will do that much for the club, they have so many problems,
maybe we have someone lined up to take his job coaching the younger lads,
someone that will stay and give his all for the club,

I don't think Gerrard has any interest in youth football. I suspect he took that job to be around in case Klopp struggled, and he could parachute in.

Klopp isn't struggling, so Gerrard is moving on. Good for him, and good for the club.

I also thought it was a little odd that, as a current Liverpool coach, he was also a TV pundit commenting on LFC games, saying things like "that's a bad result for Klopp" (I think that was after the FA cup loss) . I don't remember seeing an arrangement of that nature before.

Red67, I have always had a problem with SG doing punditry and the club should never have allowed it.

BR agree. Especially when most punditry are of no value add to the sport, the clubs, the supporters, of anyone of relevance to the game.
